Surface micro-regulation for ammonium polyphosphate: Construction of a fire-safe thermoplastic polyurethane composite based on smoke suppression strategy of char layer reinforcement

Zhipeng Zhang,Pengcheng Wang,Kai Liang,Bihe Yuan

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is highly flammable and exhibits dripping behavior when ignited. Improving its flame retardancy is critical to broadening its application. However, the application of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to TPU tends to result in the undesirable consequence of excessive smoke emission. Herein, a one-pot method was used to surface micro-structure modification of APP with piperazine and tannic acid to construct a core-shell intumescent flame retardant (APT), which was then introduced into TPU by melt blending to obtain TPU/APT composites. Compared to TPU, TPU/7APT achieves a UL-94  V -0 rating without dripping and reduces the peak heat release rate by 80.0 % and total heat release by 37.8 %. Furthermore, at the same additive level, the total smoke production of TPU/7APT is reduced by 22.8 % compared to TPU/7APP. Through the analysis of the char layer and gas-phase pyrolysis products of TPU/APT, the flame-retardant and smoke-suppression mechanism is explored. This modification strategy addresses the limitations of APP application in TPU, providing valuable insights for the development of high-performance TPU composites.

Nickel atoms of nickel foam simultaneously mediated charge redistribution and firm immobilization of zinc oxide for safe and efficient photocatalytic nitrogen oxide removal

Yin Tang,Wen Cui,Songxia Wang,Yan Li,Jiaqi Wang

Photocatalytic technology has emerged as a promising solution for air purification of ppb-level nitrogen oxides (NO x ), but potential risk of secondary pollution should not be overlooked, which could be triggered by the production of toxic intermediate and the potential release of airborne catalyst particles during reaction processes. Herein, nickel foam (NF) has been introduced as not only carrier material but also performance promoter for zinc oxide (ZnO). The NF supported ZnO sample (Ni-ZnO/NF) demonstrates multifunctional superiority: 66.4 % nitric oxide (NO) removal efficiency, <1.7 % nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) byproduct generation, and ultralow photocatalyst loss (<1.2 % mass). Mechanistic investigations combining experimental characterization and theoretical simulations reveal atomic substitution processes where NF-derived Ni atoms replace Zn sites in the ZnO lattice, forming stable Ni-O interfacial bonds, which contributes to enhance interaction between ZnO and NF for firm immobilization and form electron localization zones around Ni-O bond for reactants activation and reactive oxygen species formation. The optimized reaction pathway (NO + e −  → NO − , NO −  +  1 O 2  → NO 3 − ) ensures complete oxidation while suppressing hazardous intermediates. This work blueprints next-generation supported photocatalysts through atomic-level interface engineering, advancing practical application of photocatalytic technology for sustainable air purification.

Functionalized bio-based intumescent flame retardant with ZIF-67 as an effective fire safe agent for thermoplastic polyurethane composites with enhanced mechanical properties

Biyu Huang,Haopeng Zhang,Jirui Qu,Gaoyuan Li,Hongbo Zhao,Lei Liu,Chuanmei Jiao,Xilei Chen

Exceptional fire safety, mechanical flexibility, ultraviolet (UV) resistance, and transparency are critical characteristics for thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) materials in rapidly evolving industrial applications. Nevertheless, achieving a harmonious balance among these properties remains a significant challenge. In this paper, bio-based phytic acid/chitosan intumescent flame retardant (CaCS@PA) and cobalt metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) were incorporated into TPU, forming a densely crosslinked network through non-covalent interactions including hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. The resulting TPU/ZIF-67-CaCS@PA composites show significant fire safety performance, with a 49.8% reduction in peak heat release rate and a 30.0% decrease in peak smoke production. Analysis of the condensed and gas phases indicated that the flame-retardant mechanism of ZIF-67-CaCS@PA primarily relies on the ability of ZIF-67 to influence the migration of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) gases and catalyze carbonization. This process accelerates the formation of a highly graphitized, thermally stable, and compact char layer, which acts as an effective protective barrier. Owing to the synergistic effect of supramolecular interactions, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the TPU composites were significantly enhanced to 39.6 MPa and 787.4%, representing increases of 155.6% and 27.7% prior to the pure TPU, respectively. Additionally, TPU/ZIF-67-CaCS@PA displays excellent transparency and UV resistance, effectively mitigating aging, yellowing, and strength degradation under UV exposure. This study successfully achieved a desirable balance between fire safety, mechanical performance, UV shielding, and transparency in TPU composites, offering valuable insights and potential advancements for both industrial applications and academic research.

Flexible, high-temperature-resistant, highly conductive, and porous siloxane-based single-ion conducting electrolyte membranes for safe and dendrite-free lithium-metal batteries

Zhenyuan Hu,Yunfeng Zhang,Weizhen Fan,Xianwei Li,Shikang Huo,Xiao Jing,Wei Bao,Yi Zhang,Hansong Cheng

High-temperature-resistant polymer electrolyte membranes with satisfactory Li-ion transference number ( t L i + tLi+ ) and ionic conductivity is desirable for the application in safe and dendrite-proof lithium metal batteries (LMBs). In this study, siloxane-based single-ion conducting polymer electrolyte (SIPE) membranes with high porosity are fabricated by in-situ sol-gel and non-solvent induced phase separation methods. Benefiting from the well-designed three-dimensional interpenetrating polymer network , the thermal and dimensional ability of the as-developed membranes are significantly enhanced. In addition, the porous structure enabling a high liquid electrolyte uptake (468.6%) combines with the intrinsic nature of SIPE for the membranes, giving rise to much higher ionic conductivity of 1.72 × 10 −3  S cm −1 and t L i + tLi+ of 0.72 compared to commercial polypropylene (PP) separators (3.56 × 10 −4  S cm −1 and 0.33) at 25 °C. Such excellent electrochemical properties are beneficial to inhibiting the Li dendrites and impeding short-circuiting of batteries. As expected, the Li/Li symmetrical cells show a stable galvanostatic Li plating/stripping cycling performance with a low overpotential of more than 400 h at 2 mA cm −2 . Remarkably, the LiFePO 4 /Li batteries using the membranes exhibit impressive rate capacity and superior cycling ability compared to the batteries assembled with PP separators. This novel design and exciting results offer tremendous potential in the construction of dendrite-free LMBs with high safety.

Poorly-crystallized poly(vinyl alcohol)/carrageenan matrix: Highly ionic conductive and flame-retardant gel polymer electrolytes for safe and flexible solid-state supercapacitors

Tingting Ye,Yihui Zou,Wenjia Xu,Tianrong Zhan,Jin Sun,Yanzhi Xia,Xiaoli Zhang,Dongjiang Yang

Gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is widely reported due to its excellent mechanical strength , low cost, nontoxicity, and chemical stability. However, the low ionic conductivity that attributed to semi-crystalline structure and the high flammability of PVA limits its application in solid-state supercapacitors (SSCs). Herein, we use self-flame-retardant carrageenans (Car) to form hygrogen bonds with PVA molecular chains and improve their energy of nucleation. The obtained blend PVA/Car GPE displays low crystallinity , high ionic conductivity and excellent flame-retardant performance. The SSCs fabricated by PVA/Car GPE and activated carbon electrodes exhibit a high specific capacitance (406 mF cm −2  at 5 mA cm −2 ) and an excellent rate performance (99.9% capacitance retention after 5500 cycles). Furthermore, the flexible SSC in the bent state does not show any change and can drive a light-emitting diode successfully. The present work highlights a novel biomass strategy to reduce the crystallinity of PVA and obtain flame-retardant hybrid GPE simultaneously, which provides opportunities for flexible electronics with greatly enhanced ionic conductivity and safety.

Characterization of a Potent, Selective, and Safe Inhibitor, Ac15(Az8)2, in Reversing Multidrug Resistance Mediated by Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP/ABCG2)

Tsz Cheung Chong,Iris L. K. Wong,Jiahua Cui,Man Chun Law,Xuezhen Zhu,Xuesen Hu,Jason W. Y. Kan,Clare S. W. Yan,Tak Hang Chan,Larry M. C. Chow

Overexpression of breast cancer resistance transporter (BCRP/ABCG2) in cancers has been explained for the failure of chemotherapy in clinic. Inhibition of the transport activity of BCRP during chemotherapy should reverse multidrug resistance. In this study, a triazole-bridged flavonoid dimerAc15(Az8)2was identified as a potent, nontoxic, and selective BCRP inhibitor. Using BCRP-overexpressing cell lines, its EC50for reversing BCRP-mediated topotecan resistance was 3 nM in MCF7/MX100 and 72 nM in S1M180 in vitro. Mechanistic studies revealed thatAc15(Az8)2restored intracellular drug accumulation by inhibiting BCRP-ATPase activity and drug efflux. It did not down-regulate the cell surface BCRP level to enhance drug retention. It was not a transport substrate of BCRP and showed a non-competitive relationship with DOX in binding to BCRP. A pharmacokinetic study revealed that I.P. administration of 45 mg/kg ofAc15(Az8)2resulted in plasma concentration above its EC50(72 nM) for longer than 24 h. It increased the AUC of topotecan by 2-fold. In an in vivo model of BCRP-overexpressing S1M180 xenograft in Balb/c nude mice, it significantly reversed BCRP-mediated topotecan resistance and inhibited tumor growth by 40% with no serious body weight loss or death incidence. Moreover, it also increased the topotecan level in the S1M180 xenograft by 2-fold. Our results suggest thatAc15(Az8)2is a promising candidate for further investigation into combination therapy for treating BCRP-overexpressing cancers. Keywords:multidrug resistance;breast cancer resistance protein;BCRP;ABCG2;flavonoid dimers

A biocompatible and magnetic nanocarrier with a safe UV-initiated docetaxel release and cancer secretion removal properties increases therapeutic potential for skin cancer

Fei Kong,Xiao Huang,Danyang Yue,Jun Pan

Cancer is a leading fatal disease worldwide. To increase its therapeutic efficiency, more effective with less side effect and patient acceptable administration approach is expected. Moreover, modification of tumor microenvironment is proved to be operative recently. In this paper, a nanocarrier named LDEDDS was developed for intelligent tropical administration of skin cancer, along with removal of hydrophobic cancerous secretion to change tumor microenvironment. It was made by coating of amphipathic polymer P(BA- co -HBA) on docetaxel (TXT, a model hydrophobic anticancer drug) loaded Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO. Results showed that an optimal loading rate of TXT in Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO was 89.75   ±   0.15%, corresponding to loading capacity of 17.95   ±   2.97% when the mass ratio of Fe 3 O 4 @ZnO to TXT was 1:20. The LDEDDS had a narrow distribution size of 115.8   nm in average and was superparamagnetic. Without UV radiation, it had low TXT release (<   7% in 48   h) and cytotoxicity (<   14% in 96   h) to both the normal and carcinoma skin cells. While under a UV with a dose much lower than physiological dose of normal sunlight, LDEDDS released around 60% and 90% of TXT in 1 and 48   h. 1   h UV treated LDEDDS removed up to 62% of cancer secreted epidermal growth factor (EGF), a model hydrophobic secretion in 96   h. Consequently, 1   h UV treated LDEDDS inhibited up to 60% of the growth of skin cancer cells in 96   h, overriding those effects of the same concentration of TXT in in vitro cellular experiments. This is the first study to change tumor microenvironment by removal of cancerous secretion and is proved to be effective. Along with the superparamagnetic property, which provides potential for concentrating, increasing penetration and internalization into cancerated cells as well as removing from body under an external magnetic field, we predict LDEDDS will have potential applications in clinic skin cancer therapy.

Self-healing, deformable and safe integrated supercapacitor enabled by synergistic effect of multiple physical interactions in gel polymer electrolyte with dual-role Co2+

Zhongyuan Guo,Hongwei Zhang,Kui Liu,Siyuan Xie,Luhao Zhang,Xiaohan Fang,Yufen Xie,Gang Qin,Jia Yang,Qiang Chen

With the rapid development of wearable electronic devices, flexible supercapacitors have gained strong interest. However, traditional sandwich supercapacitors have weak interfacial binding, resulting in high interface resistance and poor deformability. Herein, a self-healing integrated supercapacitor based on a polyacrylic acid-polyisodecyl methacrylate-CoSO 4 gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) was developed. By incorporating ion coordination into a hydrophobic association network, a double network structure was formed, endowing the GPE with remarkable mechanical properties and self-healing abilities. Specifically, Co 2+ ions functioned both as charge carrier and crosslinker, simultaneously enhancing the electrochemical (2.87 S/m) and mechanical (0.262 MPa) properties of the GPE. In situ growth of polyaniline electrode material on the GPE surface resulted in an integrated supercapacitor with a continuous morphology at the electrode/electrolyte interface, minimizing interface resistance and improving electrochemical performance. The supercapacitor exhibits high specific capacitance, exceptional cyclic stability, superior deformability and security due to the unique integrated structure. Furthermore, it demonstrates remarkable electrochemical and self-healing properties even at quite low temperature. Overall, this work offers a promising approach for reliable self-healing energy storage devices with high performance and adaptability to complex usage conditions.

Development of Meretrix meretrix clam protein/ι-carrageenan hydrogels with soft-textured and safe-swallowing: Insights into nonlinear rheological behavior, microstructure and gelation mechanisms

Jia-Cheng Liu,Jia-Ni Gao,Zhu-Jun Zhang,Bin Lai,Ce Wang,Jia-Nan Yan,Hai-Tao Wu

The complex coacervation and gelation behavior of Meretrix meretrix clam protein/ ι -carrageenan (MMCP/IC) influenced by various blending ratios (9:1-1:9) and pH (12-1) were investigated. Compared with other blending ratios, the MMCP/IC composite hydrogels at blending ratio of 4:6 exhibited the greatest rheological properties ( G' and G'' ) and textural properties (hardness, cohesiveness, springiness and chewiness), which were increased by 0.2-3.6 folds and 31%-151%, respectively. The MMCP/IC composite hydrogels showed weak strain overshoot behaviors and strain-softening behavior , which showed the best shear resistance and stability at blending ratio of 4:6 under large deformation. The P 21 and P 22 of MMCP/IC composite hydrogels at blending ratio of 4:6 enhanced by 3.3%-73.1% than that under other blending ratios compared with that of single MMCP. Correspondingly, MMCP/IC composite hydrogels at blending ratio of 4:6 exhibited a compact network structure with the lowest lacunarity and largest aggregation, supporting highest gel viscoelasticity. The strengthened electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds between MMCP and IC were reflected by blue shift of Amide A and Ⅰ bands, and the former occurred earlier than the latter. Furthermore, electrostatic interactions and hydrophobic interactions were the primary forces for maintaining MMCP/IC composite hydrogels, accounting for 25.6%-32.3% and 29.7%-40.6% of the total forces. The MMCP/IC composite hydrogels at various blending ratios (6:4, 4:6 and 2:8) could be classified into level 5 dysphagia food (minced and moist) by International Dysphagia Eating Standardization Initiative (IDDSI). These findings provide insights into the development of novel soft-gel types of dysphagia foods based on marine-derived proteins and polysaccharides.

Design, docking optimization, and evaluation of biotin-PEG4-1,8-naphthalimide as a potent and safe antitumor agent with dual targeting of ferroptosis and DNA

Qi Wang,Si-Min Liang,Zhi-Chen Mao,Xian-Li Ma,Jian-Hua Wei,Ri-Zhen Huang,Ye Zhang

A set of biotin-polyethylene glycol (PEG)-naphthalimide derivatives 4a–4h with dual targeting of ferroptosis and DNA were designed and optimized using docking simulation as antitumor agents. Docking simulation optimization results indicated that biotin-PEG4-piperazine-1,8-naphthalimide 4d should be the best candidate among these designed compounds 4a–4h, and therefore, we synthesized and evaluated it as a novel antitumor agent. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and MGC-803 and U251 xenograft models identified 4d as a good candidate antitumor agent with potent efficacy and safety profiles, compared with amonafide and temozolomide. The findings of the docking simulations, fluorescence intercalator displacement (FID), western blot, comet, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU), flow cytometry, transmission electron microscopy, and BODIPY-581/591-C11, FerroOrange, and dihydroethidium (DHE) fluorescent probe assays revealed that 4d could induce DNA damage, affect DNA synthesis, and cause cell cycle arrest in the S phase in MGC-803 cells. Also, it could induce lipid peroxidation and thus lead to ferroptosis in MGC-803 cells, indicating that it mainly exerted antitumor effects through dual targeting of ferroptosis and DNA. These results suggested that it was feasible to design, optimize using docking simulation, and evaluate the potency and safety of biotin-PEG-1,8-naphthalimide as a antitumor agent with dual targeting of ferroptosis and DNA, based on a multi-target drug strategy.

Poly(ionic liquid)-Based Hybrid Hierarchical Free-Standing Electrolytes with Enhanced Ion Transport and Fire Retardancy Towards Long-Cycle-Life and Safe Lithium Batteries

Teng Huang,Man-Cheng Long,Gang Wu,Yu-Zhong Wang,Xiu-Li Wang

Graphical Fireproof : A hybrid hierarchical poly(ionic liquid)-based quasi-solid electrolyte containing silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 -PIL-QSE) is prepared through a one-step in situ polymerization and added to a poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) porous membrane. The freestanding SiO 2 -PIL-QSE exhibits high fire retardancy and the hierarchical porous structure is beneficial for the efficient and stable migration of ions, leading to an excellent long-life cycling performance, which indicates good prospects in the field of flexible safe lithium batteries. Ionic liquid electrolytes (ILEs), owing to their wide electrochemical window, high ionic conductivity, and low volatility, have been extensively applied in the field of energy storage devices. However, it is extremely significant and greatly challenging to seek the counterbalance of good mechanical properties and excellent electrochemical performances, including a high transference number of ILEs for safe flexible lithium batteries. In this work, a novel hybrid poly(ionic liquid)-based quasi-solid electrolyte containing silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 -PIL-QSE) is fabricated through the one-step in situ polymerization of the ionic liquid covalently tethered to silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 -IL-TFSI), which fills a poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) porous membrane prepared through phase inversion. The hybrid hierarchical porous architecture endows the SiO 2 -PIL-QSE with excellent thermal stability, good fire safety (i. e. nonflammable and low shrinkage), improved mechanical strength, and excellent electrochemical performance, including a high room-temperature ionic conductivity of 1.69 mS cm −1 , a superior electrochemical window up to 5.5 V, as well as a high lithium-ion transference of 0.46. Accordingly, the LiFePO 4 |SiO 2 -PIL-QSE|Li cell can maintain a discharge specific capacity of 133.7 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C at 25 °C with a capacity retention ratio of 91.9 % after 400 cycles. The excellent performances and good applicability in the pouch-type battery of SiO 2 -PIL-QSE indicate a good prospect in the field of flexible solid-state polymer batteries (SSPB).
