The highly sulfated polysaccharide sea cucumber chondroitin sulfate (SCCS) can alleviate intestinal damage and display strong anti-food-allergic activity. The O -glycopattern levels in colonic mucin are closely related to the its protective effect on function of the intestinal barrier. However, the effect of the SCCS on colonic mucin O -glycan has not been investigated. In this study, ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized allergic mice and SCCS treatment were used. Mouse colonic mucin O -glycome was released and analyzed through reductive β-elimination combined with PGC–LC–MS. A total of presumptive 20 neutral and 28 acidic O -glycan structures were identified, in which the core 2 type acidic O -glycan structure is predominant in Balb/c female mice. Treatment with OVA and SCCS did not change the numbers of colon mucin O -glycan type, but the expression level of total O -glycosylation was more abundant in the SCCS group mice than in the OVA group (1.8-fold), especially for acidic O -glycans (co-modified by fucose and sulfate groups). Furthermore, supplementation with SCCS reversed most of the O -glycan decreasing trend, which may be associated with a return to healthy levels of gut microbiota. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that SCCS could restore colonic mucin O -glycosylation levels and intestinal homeostasis and contribute to enhancing intestinal barrier function.

In this study, a konjac glucomannan (KGM)/ gelatin (GEL)-based film integrated with ginger essential oil (GEO) and rosemary essence oil (REO)-loaded bacterial cellulose was prepared. The synergistic effects of GEO and REO were evaluated. The physicochemical, mechanical, optical, morphological, antibacterial, antioxidant properties, thermal stability and preservation effects of the composite films were characterized. Results demonstrated that GEO and REO exhibited synergistic antibacterial activity when combined in a 3:1 ratio. FT-IR analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed good compatibility among the components of the film. Furthermore, the incorporation of EOs enhanced various properties of the active film including mechanical strength, barrier performance, hydrophobicity as well as its antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities while also improving thermal stability. Additionally, the active film containing 0.8 % ( w / v ) composite essential oils (KGB-0.8) effectively maintained the quality of refrigerated sea bass and extended the shelf-life for another 6 days.

Developing biobased materials is a considerably effective approach to save fossil resources and reduce emissions. Biobased polyamide 56 (PA56) is an excellent engineering material, but it has low toughness. Herein, to enhance the toughness of PA56, an ultra-tough biodegradable material, i.e., poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) was introduced into PA56. Moreover, a self-synthesized epoxy-terminated hyperbranched polyester (EHBP) was used to improve the compatibility of the blended materials. The results of differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the epoxide group of EHBP could react with PA56 and PBAT to form a block -like polymer structure and limit the crystallization behavior of the blends. The scanning electron microscopy results show that the addition of EHBP considerably reduced the dispersed-phase size in the blends, forming a nanoscale island structure. Moreover, the hydrogen bonds formed between EHBP and PA56/PBAT enhanced the intermolecular interaction between the two materials. Thus, PA56 blends with ultrahigh toughness were successfully prepared. The prepared PA56/PBAT/EHBP blend exhibited a notch impact strength of 20.71 kJ/m 2 and a breaking elongation of 38.3 %, which represent increases of 427.3 % and 252.8 %, respectively, compared with those of pure PA56. Thus, the proposed method is suitable for toughening PA56 and broadening its applications.

FDRGF exhibits favorable umami taste and in vitro anti-inflammatory potential. • Multi-enzyme hydrolysis remodels structure and volatile flavor of sea cucumber protein. • FDRGF mitigates inflammation via suppressing ROS-NF-κB signaling in macrophages. Sea cucumber protein was sequentially hydrolyzed with pepsin, trypsin, and enterokinase to obtain peptides with desirable taste characteristics and immunomodulatory potential. Multi-scale characterization, flavoromics, peptidomics, bioinformatic screening, molecular simulations, and cellular assays were employed to investigate the structural changes, flavor remodeling, and bioactivity of the resulting hydrolysates. Results showed that hydrolysis disrupted the compact protein structure, induced conformational unfolding, and yielded short peptides (0.5–1.5 kDa) with enhanced hydrophilicity and processing adaptability. The volatile profile was significantly reshaped, with marked enrichment of aldehydes and heterocyclic compounds. Through multi-dimensional screening, the pentapeptide FDRGF (TH) was identified with outstanding umami taste and low bitterness. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations confirmed stable binding of TH to immunomodulatory targets, and cellular assays verified that TH improved macrophage metabolic status and regulated the expression of inflammatory mediators under LPS-induced inflammatory conditions. This study elucidates the structure-flavor-activity relationships of sea cucumber protein hydrolysates and identifies a dual-function umami peptide with immunomodulatory activity, providing theoretical support for the value-added utilization of sea cucumber resources.

Multitudinous dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) enters seawater from Ulva prolifera green tides impacting phytoplankton community structure in the Yellow Sea. Field investigations and cultural experiments on U. prolifera -derived DON aging revealed its regulatory effects. The green-tide outbreak area of the Southern Yellow Sea exhibits a seasonal cycle where dominance shifts from diatoms to dinoflagellates effected by young to aging U. prolifera -derived DON from summer to spring. Diatom abundance rose significantly following the summer green tide outbreak, fueled by young, protein-rich DON released by U. prolifera . After autumn and winter aging, U. prolifera -derived DON was dominant from protein-like to humic-like components, and dinoflagellates bloomed in the green tide outbreak area. An aging U. prolifera -derived DON adding culture experiment of Chaetoceros curvisetus and Prorocentrum minimum proved that old and young DON promoted dinoflagellate and diatom growth, respectively. Diatoms preferred 0 and 12 days-aged DON (DON 0 and DON 12 ) with tyrosine B and tryptophan T components, whereas dinoflagellate favored 80 days-aged DON (DON 80 ) with humic acid E and UV fulvic acid A components. DON 0 and DON 12 can be absorbed by diatoms with higher uptake ( k up ) and growth ( k G ) constants than by dinoflagellates under low leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) conditions. Dinoflagellates absorb old DON with higher k up and k G values under higher LAP concentrations than diatoms. This was consistent with the loop of U. prolifera -derived DON turning over the seasonal succession of diatom dinoflagellates in the green-tide outbreak area. This study revealed mechanism of seasonal dinoflagellate- U. prolifera -diatom cycle, and provided new insights for impacts of U. prolifera green tides on phytoplankton regime shift, thus, acting as a basis for marine management strategies.

With the growing interest in deep-sea mining from industry, environmental risk assessments of deep-sea mining activities urgently require refinement. This study focuses on the biotoxicity effects of heavy metals released from disturbed surface sediments in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ) of the eastern Pacific Ocean, using Vibrio fischeri as a model organism to simulate deep-sea mining tailings discharge conditions. Through leaching experiments, we identified heavy metals with higher release concentrations (Rb, Li, Mn, Mo, V, Cs) and those with higher toxicity (Cu, Cd, Cr), and investigated their individual and binary combined toxicities under simulated deep-sea low-temperature (4 °C) and surface ambient-temperature (20 °C) conditions. Results showed that the concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Cr released from disturbed sediments (0.035, 1.75, 1.06 μg/L) were significantly lower than their EC 50 (36.95, 1.72, 14.43 mg/L). However, low-toxicity heavy metals such as Mn markedly enhanced the toxicity of Cd, Cu and Cr (up to 230 %), while Rb and Mo exhibited inhibitory effects. Low temperature (4 °C) significantly reduced the toxicity of Cd (reductions of 32 %–85 %) but enhanced Cu and Cr toxicity by 31 %–170 %. This study reveals the complex interactive effects of heavy metal combined toxicity in deep-sea low-temperature environments and provides critical data for defining toxicity thresholds and ecological risk assessments of heavy metals in deep-sea mining tailings discharges.

Narrow pH application range and tepid reaction kinetics greatly hinder the efficacy of heterogeneous Fenton and electro-Fenton technologies. Herein, a hollow sea-urchin-shaped carbon-anchored single-atom iron (SAFe@HSC) derived from metal organic framework has been developed as a dual-functional electro-Fenton catalyst for O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 followed by in situ activation to •OH. Benefited by the unique structure and atomically dispersed iron, the electro-Fenton system exhibits fast reaction kinetics in a wide pH range from 3 to 11. For instance, 120.7 mmol g catalyst −1 (7.5 mol g Fe −1 ) H 2 O 2 and 50.7 mmol g catalyst −1 (3.1 mol g Fe −1 ) •OH can be detected simultaneously at 60 min (20 mA cm −2 and pH 7). As a result, the mass kinetic constants of refractory thiamphenicol (TAP) degradation are as high as 4506 min −1 g Fe −1 (pH 3), 4099 min −1 g Fe −1 (pH 5), 4037 min −1 g Fe −1 (pH 7), 2974 min −1 g Fe −1 (pH 9), and 2595 min −1 g Fe −1 (pH 11). The TAP removal efficiency in static flow process achieves nearly 100% within 40 min, showing a high total organic carbon (TOC) removal of 85% in 2 h (pH 7, 20 mA cm −2 , C 0 = 20 mg L −1 , 1.5 mg of catalyst). It is the highest electro-Fenton activity among the reported catalysts for pollutant degradation at pH above 5. Furthermore, the TAP removal keeps 97% and the TOC removal reaches as high as 82.2% in the continuous-flow process ( C 0 = 20 mg L −1 , pH 7, 20 mA cm −2 , flow rate = 2 mL min −1 ). Moreover, only 1.5% Fe is leaked within 6 h. This study develops a highly efficient electro-Fenton catalyst for the treatment of organic wastewater.

The current decline in the number of waterfowl and semi-aquatic birds on a global scale is largely due to the reduction in the area of wetlands in the era of global warming. Using the example of transboundary populations of seagulls (order Charadriiformes, family Laridae), the data from long-term monitoring conducted in 1995–2020 in two key ornithological areas of international importance in Russia is presented: the Sulakskaya and Turalinskaya lagoons (Republic of Dagestan). The lagoons are located on one of the largest Western Caspian migratory route in Russia, which is arranged as a “bottleneck” where the flight paths of European and Asian migrants, which are part of the Black Sea-Mediterranean and West Siberian-East African flyways, are as close as possible. The Laridae model group, which includes 12 background taxa, was selected based on the regularity of their encounters during migration. Based on ring recovery data obtained from the Bird Ringing Center IEE RAS, the geographic dispersion of gull populations regularly migrating through the study areas was determined and the contour of their generalized flyway was designated. The share of each taxon was determined from the sum of all encountered individuals and the “core” of the species leading in numbers was identified. Correlation analysis showed that out of 12 gull taxa, 4 showed a significant increase in numbers, 3—decreased, and 5—remained at the same level. The obtained population trends were synchronized with the data from literary sources for the same species populations of Laridae, but in their nesting sites. The coincidence of the abundance trends obtained in the lagoons with the abundance trends of the same species/populations, but in their nesting sites, confirms the correctness of our assessment of the current state of the tested gull populations. Global warming affected the change in the timing of migration in 5 model taxa, while 5 species of gulls changed their migration routes in the Caspian region, changing their wintering range from African to Indian. A correlation between the abundance and intensity of Laridae migration with the average annual air temperature in the Caspian Lowland of Dagestan was found. It was shown that in warm years, the intensity of autumn migration and the abundance of gulls decreases, and in cold years it increases, while the population size themselves remains unchanged. Correlation analysis showed a reliable positive relationship between the increase in the number of common Caspian sprat, as one of the priority food items, with the increase in the number of 4 studied taxa. Correlation analysis also revealed a reliable link between the increase in the number of Laridae wintering in the study area and the regression of the Caspian Sea, in which shallow areas of the sea area improved the access of gulls to food resources (fish, benthos). Three key environmental factors that determine the dynamics of Laridae populations are discussed: hydroclimatic cycles, anthropogenic impact and foraging. The data obtained can serve as a basis for creating a Russian Laridae monitoring database with its subsequent integration with Eurasian databases. In order to preserve the biodiversity of the Turalinskaya Lagoon, including Laridae, it is recommended to create a regional protected area “Turalinskaya Lagoon.”

Ready-to-eat sea cucumbers (RSC) cannot be preserved at room temperature due to severe autolysis. This study systematically examined the quality-preserving effects of tea polyphenol (TP) and N-(3-Dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS), two cross-linking treatments, on RSC during storage at room temperature. The results demonstrated that both cross-linking treatments significantly delayed the deterioration of quality and exhibited antimicrobial effects, accompanied by enhanced the structural and thermal stability of collagen in RSC. Microstructural analysis further confirmed that TP and EDC/NHS strengthened the collagen fibers. Molecular docking simulations suggested that TP interacts with collagen primarily through non-covalent binding, whereas EDC/NHS achieves positional localization via electrostatic attraction, subsequently reinforcing the collagen structure through covalent amide bonds. Both strategies effectively slowed the deterioration of RSC during storage at room temperature, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for the development of advanced preservation technologies for RSC.

As an emerging detection technology , photoelectrochemical sensors have been widely noticed for their unique technical features. Among others, the technology has been widely used in the fields of drug, biological antibody or antigen and contaminant detection. Secondly, acetaminophen, as a novel environmental pollutant , is difficult to be degraded in the ecosystem, which in turn causes serious impacts on the ecosystem. Therefore, in this work, we designed a photoelectrochemical sensor based on a composite film of flower-like SnS 2 , sea urchin-like AgBiS 2 and graphene oxide for the detection of acetaminophen in water samples. Among them, graphene oxide, as a two-dimensional carbon-based material, can immobilize other photoelectric materials well. In addition, the flower-like SnS 2 and sea urchin-like AgBiS 2 can enhance the intensity of the photoelectric response due to their synergistic effect. Notably, the combination of graphene oxide with SnS 2 and AgBiS 2 revealed an exponential increase in the photoresponse intensity, indicating that SnS 2 /AgBiS 2 /GO has a satisfactory photoresponse intensity. At the same time, the photoelectrochemical sensor exhibited sensitive detection performance (LOD = 4 nM) and a wide detection range (0.01–50 μM) for acetaminophen under optimal detection conditions. Moreover, it also showed excellent detection performance in the detection of actual water samples, indicating that it can be applied to the detection of acetaminophen in lakes.

This research was to evaluate the effects of locust bean gum (LBG) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) active coatings supplemented with Melissa officinalis L. essential oil (MOEO) nanoemulsions to extend the shelf life of sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ) fillets during refrigerated storage at 4 °C. The results indicated that the active coatings could delay the increase in microbiological, pH, and K value of sea bass fillets. At the same time, the active coatings markedly depressed the off-flavor compounds productions such as the trimethylamine (TMA), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), hypoxanthine (Hx), hypoxanthine riboside (HxR) and reduced free amino acids (FAAs) accumulation during refrigerated storage. 24 volatile compounds were identified and the active coatings treated significantly reduced the fishy flavor compounds, such as 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, 3-methylbutanol, 2-methylbutanol, hexanal, and 1-octen-3-one. The shelf life of uncoated sea bass was 6 days, and sea bass treated with CMCS/LBG, CMCS/LBG-0.5%MOEO, CMCS/LBG-1%MOEO and CMCS/LBG-2%MOEO were 6, 9, 12 and 15 days, respectively, which suggested that the active coatings were a potential option in maintaining the quality of sea bass during refrigerated storage. A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, flagellated and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SM2107T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the Southwest Indian Ocean. Strain SM2107Tgrew at 4–40 °C and with 0–10.0 % (w/v) NaCl. It reduced nitrate to nitrite and hydrolysed casein, gelatin, chitin and DNA. The phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA genes and single-copy orthologous clusters showed that strain SM2107T, together withRheinheimera tuosuensis,Rheinheimera perlucidaandArsukibacterium ikkense, formed a separate clade, having the highest similarity to the type strain ofRheinheimera tuosuensis(98.3%). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol and the major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7cand/or C18 : 1ω6c), C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω8сand summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7cand/or C16 : 1ω6c). The only respiratory quinone was Q-8. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SM2107Twas 48.8 %. The digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain SM2107Tand type strains ofRheinheimera tuosuensis,Rheinheimera perlucidaandArsukibacterium ikkensewere 41.16, 37.70 and 31.80 %, while the average amino acid identity values between them were 87.59, 86.76 and 83.64 %, respectively. Based on the polyphasic evidence presented in this study, strain SM2107Twas considered to represent a novel species within the genusArsukibacterium, for which the nameArsukibacterium indicumwas proposed. The type strain is SM2107T(=MCCC M24986T=KCTC 82921T). Moreover, the transfer ofRheinheimera tuosuensisandRheinheimera perlucidato the genusArsukibacteriumasArsukibacterium tuosuensecomb. nov.
