A novel Si/porous-C composite with buffering voids was prepared by the co-assembly of phenol-formaldehyde resin, SiO 2 and Si nanoparticles , followed by a carbonizing process and subsequent removal of SiO 2 template. Si nanoparticle was coated with a layer of porous carbon shell with rationally designed void in between which provides the accommodating space for the volume change of Si over cycling. The as-prepared composite electrode exhibited good electrochemical performances as an anode material in lithium-ion cells, showing a stable reversible capacity of 980 mAh g −1 over 80 cycles with small capacity fade of 0.17%/cycle and high rate capability (721 mAh g −1 at 2000 mA g −1 ).

The severe volume expansion (~300%) of silicon (Si) anodes during cycling causes structural deterioration and rapid capacity loss, thereby limiting their practical application. Designing effective polymer binders is therefore crucial for addressing this challenge. Commonly used binders, such as PAA and CMC-SBR, mainly rely on physical entanglement or reversible hydrogen bonding and thus lack sufficient mechanical strength and adhesion to accommodate the large volume changes of Si and maintain long-term electrode stability. In this study, we designed a dynamic-covalent three-dimensional binder network, denoted DAH-c-IDA, to improve the cycling stability of Si anodes. The binder was prepared by grafting adhesive dopamine (DA) onto the biopolymer hyaluronic acid (HA), followed by covalent cross-linking with iminodiacetic acid (IDA). This design combines a robust covalent ester network with abundant dynamic supramolecular interactions. The covalent framework provides the mechanical strength required to confine Si particles, whereas the reversible dynamic bonds dissipate cyclic stress and reduce irreversible damage to the electrode architecture. By optimizing the degree of cross-linking, an appropriate balance between structural stability and adhesive flexibility was achieved at a DAH:IDA mass ratio of 2:1, giving the binder a high Young's modulus, damage tolerance, and strong interfacial adhesion. Consequently, the Si electrode fabricated with the optimized DAH-c-IDA binder achieved an initial coulombic efficiency of 94.39% and delivered a high reversible capacity of 1637 mAh g −1 after 580 cycles at a high current density of 2 A g −1 , while maintaining cycling operation for 800 cycles. This work demonstrates that integrating covalent cross-linking with dynamic supramolecular interactions within a 3D network is an effective strategy for developing advanced binders for durable, high-capacity Si-based lithium-ion batteries.

The in-situ reconstruction of catalysts has increasingly garnered research interest due to its pivotal role in modulating selectivity and improving activity. The surface reconstruction of group IVA element-based compounds under reaction conditions has been rarely investigated, despite wide application as active sites or carriers in catalyst fabrication. In this work, the heavy-period element in group IVA exhibits high activity in the electrocatalytic reduction of formaldehyde (HCHO) with H 2 O, which is attributed to the accelerated proton-coupled electron transfer by strong HCHO adsorption. Remarkably, the proper reconstruction of metallic Si to Si-OH during the electrolysis accounts for the active surface, enabling a highly selective formation of ethylene glycol (EG). Competitive long-term stability (1500 h) is demonstrated at –200 mA cm –2 with a low-resistance Si sheet as the cathode, which highlights the industrialization prospects of this alternative route for EG production.

The construction of advanced catalysts with well-defined structural properties is crucial for the selective hydrogenation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in modern fossil fuel upgrading. In this work, a PtPd alloy catalyst supported on Si-modified Al2O3 nanosheet (Pt-Pd/A-Si-12) is synthesized, which exhibits three key structural advantages: a high specific surface area (422 m2 g–1), a large pore volume (0.8 cm3 g–1), and a surface enriched with finely modulated weak acid sites. Systematic characterization reveals that the hierarchical porous structure not only promotes uniform dispersion of active metal species but also facilitates mass transfer of macromolecular reactants, leading to a diffusion rate 1.47 times that of the unmodified Pt-Pd/A-Si-0 catalyst. Moreover, the tailored weak acid sites play a dual role: enhancing the metal–support interaction through electronic effects while concurrently creating a highly selective hydrogenation environment. As a result, the Pt-Pd/A-Si-12 catalyst achieves nearly complete conversion (∼100%) and a selectivity up to 93% under 250 °C and 5 MPa H2, along with significantly improved stability and high sulfur resistance. This study provides fundamental insights into the structure–performance relationship in selective hydrogenation and offers an effective strategy for the design of efficient industrial catalysts.

Wide-bandgap (WBG) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for tandem applications, despite potential instability induced by halogen components. Formamidinium-cesium (FACs)-based perovskites represent as an intrinsically stable WBG system due to their low bromine-to-lead ratio and the absence of thermally unstable methylammonium. However, the performance of FACs-based WBG perovskites is highly dependent on achieving precise control over the formation dynamics. Here, we employ in-situ characterization to reveal that the key to this control lies in the evolution of the intermediate phase and propose a pathway-priming strategy. By strategically guiding the early formation of the CsPbX 3 intermediate phases, the strategy in turn templates and accelerates the subsequent transformation to the desired α-phase. The primed pathway yields a more uniform and complete phase transition, leading to enhanced film homogeneity. As a result, we demonstrate highly efficient 1.67 eV WBG PSCs with an efficiency exceeding 23%, along with excellent long-term operating stability maintaining 90% initial performance for 800 hours under continuous light stress. Furthermore, semitransparent WBG PSC achieve efficiencies of 20.91% (0.1 cm 2 ) and 19.67% (1.0 cm 2 ), corresponding to a four-terminal perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells with an efficiency of 31.04% (1.0 cm 2 ), highlighting their potential for high-performance tandem photovoltaics.

In this study, Si-alloyed porous TiAl₃ intermetallic compounds were synthesized through an efficient and rapid self-exothermic reaction. The gas permeability and pore structure of the samples were quantitatively analyzed using 3D-X-ray microtomography (3D-XRM). Combined with a self-made "visual window" and real-time temperature curves, the entire green compact exhibited a distinct and uniform exothermic behavior at every moment. The addition of Si element transformed the intense solid-liquid reaction into a relatively gentle two-step sintering process. The results indicated that an appropriate amount of Si can significantly enhance the uniformity of pore structure and increase the mechanical properties by nearly five times. Meanwhile, the oxidation kinetics curves revealed that the oxidation process was divided into an initial rapid oxidation stage and a subsequent slow oxidation stage, and the mass gain ratio of the samples gradually decreased with the increase of Si content. Furthermore, a dense Al₂O₃ oxide layer can form on the surface of skeleton at high temperatures, effectively hindered the inward diffusion of oxygen and provided a feasible design concept for achieving porous TiAl₃-based composites with high porosity and excellent performance.

Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) enable exceptional light harvesting via localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR), yet their photocatalytic utility is limited by ultrafast charge recombination and surface contamination from synthesis. Here, we overcome these challenges by applying the surface chemistry of silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) to synthesize hybrid nanostructures of uncoated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The alkyl-passivated SiNC surface acts as a reductive template, guiding the in-situ formation of clean, interfacially coupled AgNPs while protecting the SiNC core from oxidation. This tailored architecture leverages a synegiestic mechanism to enhance AgNP plasmon resonance, drive efficient hot-electron transfer and improve charge carrier separation. The resulting Ag@SiNC hybrid achieves improved CO 2 reduction performance, with a CO yield of 1,552 μmol/g and near 100% selectivity under visible light irradiation. This work establishes surface-engineered SiNCs as a versatile platform for designing high-performance plasmonic–semiconductor photocatalysts.

Si 3 N 4 is proposed as a precursor to construct Fe-Si interactions in FTS catalysts. • Fe/Si 3 N 4 catalyst exhibits stronger Fe-Si interaction and higher Fe 2 SiO 4 content than Fe/SiO 2 . • The formation of Fe 2 SiO 4 stabilizes Fe species and suppresses the formation of Fe 3 O 4 . • Preventing the formation of Fe 3 O 4 makes for decreasing CO 2 selectivity and WGS activity. Precise control over the metal-support interfacial structure plays a critical role in enhancing the activity and selectivity of iron-based catalysts for syngas conversion. Using silicon nitride as the starting precursor of silicon support, a series of SiN x O y supports with different oxidation degree were constructed via controlled oxidation under air, enabling modulation of the Fe-Si interfacial environment. A systematic comparison between silicon nitride-derived supports and conventional silica support revealed significant differences in structural evolution and catalytic behavior of iron catalysts. Spectroscopic characterizations including FTIR, solid-state NMR, XPS, XRD, and Mössbauer spectroscopy demonstrated that the unique interfacial structure formed during the oxidation of Si 3 N 4 stabilizes the active iron species (carbides) and suppresses the formation of undesired phases (Fe 3 O 4 ), thereby reducing CO 2 selectivity. These findings underscore the critical influence of support precursors on interfacial chemistry and reaction pathways, providing new insights and strategies for the rational design of Fe-based catalysts. This study contributes to advancing research in aluminium alloys employed as fuels for thermites (pyrotechnic compositions formed of metal and metal oxide powders). Aluminium alloys possess certain potential in regulating energy release and enhancing combustion efficiency; in order to explore better formulations for the aluminium alloy fuel thermite, PVDF-coated Al–Si samples with different proportions were prepared here by using the electrostatic spraying method. In this study, we are primarily addressing the energy release limitation problems which are imposed by the oxide layer formation during the combustion of aluminium–silicon alloy powders in air and explore the optimal formulation of aluminium–silicon fuel combined with fluoropolymer oxidants. Leveraging advanced electrostatic spraying technology, various PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-coated Al–Si samples (Al–Si@PVDF) were successfully synthesized. Morphological characterization confirmed the complete encapsulation of Al–Si alloy powders by PVDF, yielding spherical core–shell structures with uniform elemental distribution and favourable microstructural characteristics. Further, by thermal analysis and calorimetry investigation, a two-stage reaction between Al–Si and PVDF was unveiled: an initial PVDF decomposition phase followed by an ignition reaction phase. To comprehensively evaluate the combustion performance of samples with varying proportions, high-speed and infrared cameras were employed for precise observations, enabling a deep dive into the combustion parameters and their disparities under two distinct spatial conditions. Through these combustion performance experiments and post-combustion product analysis, we deduced the micro-combustion process mechanism of Al–Si@PVDF. This works not only that it provides a scientific basis for optimizing the formulation of aluminium–silicon fuels and fluoropolymer oxidants, but also holds positive implications for advancing research and development in aluminium alloy-based metastable intermolecular composites. Last but not least, besides the high combustion rates, low ignition temperatures, stable combustion, and strong exothermic performance were obtained for these thermite composite materials.

Constructing a robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is extremely critical to developing high-energy-density silicon (Si)-based lithium-ion batteries. However, it is still elusive how to accurately manipulate the chemical composition and structure of the SEI layer. Herein, a LiF-dominated SEI film intertwined by a highly elastic polymer is achieved by regulating the defluorination mechanism of the fluorinated carbonate additive on the Si electrode surface. The experimental and computational results confirm that the decomposition route of trans-difluoroethylene carbonate (DFEC) molecules can be significantly altered in the presence of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) additive. The induction of direct defluorination of DFEC step by LiDFOB, as opposed to the breaking of C–O bonds without LiDFOB addition, is crucial in ensuring the exclusive formation of LiF-dominated SEI and maintaining the cyclic structure of DFEC. The defluorinated DFEC easily polymerizes to form poly(vinylene carbonate), enhancing the elasticity of the SEI. The resulting LiF-dominated SEI film with a polymer interwoven outer layer shows enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical stability, which can effectively accelerate electrode reaction kinetics and maintain the structural stability of the Si electrode. As a result, the Si electrode with the electrolyte containing the designed dual-additive exhibits superior cycling stability and excellent rate performance, delivering a high reversible capacity of 1487.3 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g–1.

Si–B–N–O ceramics are promising materials for wave-transparent windows of hypersonic vehicles due to the excellent thermal stability and low dielectric constant. The polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) route is widely adopted for flexible compositional control of the Si–B–N–O covalent ceramics. In this study, a novel borazine-modified polysilazoxane (RBOSZ) was synthesized using trichlorosilane, tert -butanol, trichloroborazine, and ammonia as starting materials. RBOSZ features a Si–N–Si backbone and borazine rings. The Si–B–N–O ceramic was derived from RBOSZ with a ceramic yield of 61 wt% after pyrolysis under nitrogen atmosphere. Boron facilitates the formation of Si 2 N 2 O nanograins at elevated temperatures and enhances the ceramic’s high-temperature stability. By switching nitrogen to ammonia during organic-inorganic transformation, a low-carbon Si–B–N–O ceramic was obtained and retained its amorphous structure up to 1400 °C. After annealing at 1600 °C, Si 2 N 2 O/β-Si 3 N 4 nanocrystals participated in the Si–B–N–O matrix. This work establishes a facile precursor for high-performance Si–B–N–O ceramics to meet the application demands of heat-resistant wave-transparent windows.

Spent nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are a significant secondary resource for recovering rare earth elements (REEs), particularly lanthanum (La). However, extracting La from the La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag generated during pyrometallurgical recycling remains a major challenge. This study proposes a novel approach to address this issue by synergistically extracting La from La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag while simultaneously upgrading metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si, 99.2%) to high-purity Si (99.991%). The process begins with the extraction of La from the La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag using MG-Si as a reductant, yielding a useful Si-La alloy. This is followed by a three-stage leaching process to further separate the Si-La alloy and purify the Si powder. In the primary leaching stage, the Si-La alloy powder is separated into a La-containing acidic solution and residual Si powder using HCl solution. In the secondary leaching stage, Fe impurities in the residual Si powder are removed using a mixed acids solution of HF and HCl. In the tertiary leaching stage, the Si powder is further purified to 99.991% using HCl. Finally, the La ions in the La-containing acidic solution are selectively precipitated using hydrofluoric acid (HF) and ammonia (NH 3 ·H 2 O), respectively, resulting in high-purity LaF 3 (96.2%) and LaOCl (99.4%). This new method simultaneously recovers La from La 2 O 3 -containing oxide slag and enhances Si purity from 99.2 to 99.991%.
