Nanoconfined and in Situ Catalyzed MgH2 Self-Assembled on 3D Ti3C2 MXene Folded Nanosheets with Enhanced Hydrogen Sorption Performances

Wen Zhu,Li Ren,Chong Lu,Hao Xu,Fengzhan Sun,Zhewen Ma,Jianxin Zou

MXenes are considered as potential support materials for nanoconfinement of MgH2/Mg to improve the hydrogen storage properties. However, it has never been realized so far due to the stacking and oxidation problems caused by unexpected surface terminations (−OH, −O, etc.) on MXenes. In this study, hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide was used to build a 3D Ti3C2Tx architecture of folded nanosheets to reduce the stacking risk of flakes, and a bottom-up self-assembly strategy was successfully applied to synthesize ultradispersed MgH2 nanoparticles anchored on the surface of the annealed 3D Ti3C2Tx (Ti-MX). The composite with a 60 wt % loading of MgH2 NPs, 60MgH2@Ti-MX, starts to decompose at 140 °C and is capable of releasing 3.0 wt % H2 at 150 °C within 2.5 h. In addition, a reversible capacity up to 4.0 wt % H2 was still maintained after 60 cycles at 200 °C without obvious loss in kinetics. In situ high-resolution TEM observations of the decomposition process together with other analyses revealed that the nanosize effect caused by the nanoconfinement and the multiphasic interfaces between MgH2(Mg) and Ti-MX, especially the in situ formed catalytic TiH2, were main reasons accounting for the superior hydrogen sorption performances.

Using a Self-Assembled Two-Dimensional MXene-Based Catalyst (2D-Ni@Ti3C2) to Enhance Hydrogen Storage Properties of MgH2

Wen Zhu,Subrata Panda,Chong Lu,Zhewen Ma,Darvaish Khan,Jinjian Dong,Fengzhan Sun,Hao Xu,Qiuyu Zhang,Jianxin Zou

In this work, we report the remarkable catalytic effects of a novel Ti3C2 MXene-based catalyst (Ni@Ti-MX), which was prepared via self-assembling of Ni nanoparticles onto the surface of exfoliated Ti3C2 nanosheets. The resultant Ni@Ti-MX catalyst, characterized by ultradispersed Ni nanoparticles being anchored on the monolayer Ti3C2 flakes, was introduced into MgH2 through ball milling. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that a synergetic catalytic effect of multiphase components (Mg2Ni, TiO2, metallic Ti, etc.) derived in the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite exhibits remarkable improvements in the hydrogen sorption kinetics of MgH2. In particular, the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite can absorb 5.4 wt % H2 in 25 s at 125 °C and release 5.2 wt % H2 in 15 min at 250 °C. Interestingly, it can uptake 4 wt % H2 in 5 h even at room temperature. Furthermore, the dehydrogenation peak temperature of the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite is about 221 °C, which is 50 and 122 °C lower than that of MgH2 + Ti-MX and MgH2, respectively. The excellent hydrogen sorption properties of the MgH2 + Ni@Ti-MX composite are primarily attributed to the peculiar core–shell nanostructured MgH2@Mg2NiH4 hybrid materials and the interfacial coupling effects from different catalyst–matrix interfaces. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that using self-assembling of transition-metal elements on two-dimensional (2D) materials as a catalyst is a promising approach to enhance the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2.

A dye-sensitized solar cells with an efficiency of 10.01% based on the MoP/MoNiP2@Ti3C2 composite counter electrode

Y. He,G. Yue,J. Huo,C. Dong,G. Xie,F. Tan

Transition metal phosphides are becoming a main study topic in new catalytic materials field due to their similar properties to transition metal nitrides and carbides as well as their excellent reaction activity and catalytic selectivity for deep hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrogenation . Mxene, a two-dimensional layered material with high specific surface area and electrical conductivity , plays an important role in accelerating catalytic reduction of triiodide ion in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In this work, the MoP/MoNiP 2 hybrid was synthesized while adopting Ti 3 C 2 Mxene to realize the intercalation structure of composite with simple conditions, therefore enabling a formation of ‘pillared effect’ in Ti 3 C 2 Mxene. The optimized MoP/MoNiP 2 @Ti 3 C 2 composite was achieved by adjusting the doping ratio of the two. The DSSCs based on the MoP/MoNiP 2 @Ti 3 C 2 catalyst with 80 wt% Ti 3 C 2 doping reache an enhancement of power conversion efficiency of 10.01%, much higher than that of the platinum counter electrode (8.22%). Through a suite of morphological and electrochemical analyses, we summarize the reasons for the performance enhancement to the synergistic effect of the MoP/MoNiP 2 hybrid and Ti 3 C 2 Mxene, and especially, the unique intercalation structure of MoP/MoNiP 2 @Ti 3 C 2 with ‘pillared effect’. The MoP/MoNiP 2 @Ti 3 C 2 counter electrode with perfect electrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties is a promising alternative to the platinum electrode for DSSCs in the future.

Self-Assembly 2D Ti3C2/g-C3N4 MXene Heterojunction for Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline in Visible Wavelength Range

Chunmin Li,Changjie Kan,Xiangtai Meng,Mengxue Liu,Qianqian Shang,Yikai Yang,Yu Wang,Xiaoxue Cui

An ultrathin 2D Ti3C2/g-C3N4MXene (2D-TC/CN) heterojunction was synthesized, using a facile self-assembly method; the perfect microscopic-morphology and the lattice structure presented in the sample with a 2 wt% content of Ti3C2were observed by the field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The optimized sample (2-TC/CN) exhibited excellent performance in degrading the tetracycline (TC), and the degradation rate reached 93.93% in the conditions of 20 mg/L, 50 mL of tetracycline within 60 min. Except for the increased specific-surface area, investigated by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS) and X-ray photoelectron microscopy (XPS) valence spectra, the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of the 2-TC/CN could also be ascribed to the formation of Ti-N bonds between Ti3C2and g-C3N4nanosheets, which reduced the width of the band gap through adjusting the position of the valence band, thus resulting in the broadened light-absorption. Furthermore, the facilitated electron transmission was also proved by time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which is effective in improving the quantum efficiency of photo-generated electrons. In addition, the resulting radical-capture experiment suggested that superoxide radicals have the greatest influence on photodegradation performance, with the photodegradation rate of TC reducing from 93.16% to 32.08% after the capture of superoxide radicals, which can be attributed to the production of superoxide radicals only, by the 2-TC/CN composites with a high conduction-band value (−0.62 eV). These facilely designed 2D Ti3C2/g-C3N4composites possess great application potential for the photodegradation of tetracycline and other antibiotics.Keywords:Ti3C2MXene;g-C3N4;2D catalysis;tetracycline degradation

Meijun Ni,Jia Chen,Chenxi Wang,Yilin Wang,Linzi Huang,Weicheng Xiong,Pengcheng Zhao,Yixi Xie,Junjie Fei

Dopamine is one of the most important neurotransmitters in the human body, and its sensitive detection and quantification are important for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of related neurological diseases. Herein, a highly-sensitive dopamine electrochemical sensor has been constructed based on the two-dimensional transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 MXene, graphitized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and ZnO nanospheres. Dopamine presents a standard reversible redox reaction on the sensor, and density flooding theory has been successfully applied to reveal the redox process of dopamine. Under optimal experimental conditions, the sensor exhibits a wide linear range (0.01–30 μM), low limit of detection (3.2 nM) and high sensitivity (16 A/M). Furthermore, the sensor has excellent stability and anti-interference ability, satisfactory accuracy in human serum samples, which can be used for the detection of actual samples. This work has provided a novel method for detecting dopamine and a new idea for the application of MXene and metal oxide semiconductor in electrochemical sensors.

Boosting the peroxidase-like activity of Pt nanozymes by a synergistic effect of Ti3C2 nanosheets for dual mechanism detection

Hongqi Geng,Zhijuan Li,Quan Liu,Qi Yang,Huimin Jia,Qiang Chen,Aiguo Zhou,Weiwei He

Nanozymes show great promise in bioanalysis and therapeutics, which largely rely on high catalytic efficiency and selectivity. Inspired by the interfacial electronic interaction between noble metals and transition metal carbides, Pt nanozymes are modified with Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets to construct Ti3C2/Pt hybrids with synergistically enhanced catalytic activity. Although Ti3C2 does not have oxidase and peroxidase-like activity, it can greatly selectively enhance the peroxidase-like activity of Pt nanozymes. Near-infrared irradiation can further increase specifically the peroxidase-like activity of Ti3C2/Pt. The optimal peroxidase-like activity of Ti3C2/Pt is 6 times higher than Pt in the dark and 7.9 times higher than Pt under illumination. This catalytic enhancement is attributed to the interplay of the strong interfacial electron effect and unique photothermal effect of Ti3C2. Using the superior peroxidase-like activity of Ti3C2/Pt, dual mechanism colorimetric methods based on cascade reaction and inhibitory effect are developed for specific detection of glucose and glutathione with a limit of detection of 1.0 μM and 0.0089 μM, respectively. Our work provides an effective means to improve the catalytic activity and selectivity of nanozymes by introduction of an ideal supporter, which will be of value for the design of efficient nanozymes.

Self-floating Ti3C2 MXene-coated polyurethane sponge with excellent photothermal conversion performance for peroxydisulfate activation and clean water production

Rui Zhou,Haoran Song,Daoyuan Zu,Shiting Pan,Yuwei Wang,Fangxian Wang,Zhuo Li,Yongming Shen,Changping Li

The self-floating Ti 3 C 2 MXene-coated polyurethane sponge (MXene@PU module) was prepared via the simple coating operation for thermal activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) and production of clean water. Coating MXene on the surface of PU significantly improved the degradation of model pollutant carbamazepine (CBZ) compared with PU alone under simulated solar radiation. Because of the excellent photothermal conversion performance of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and the unique double-deck structure of MXene@PU module, the interfacial temperature of MXene@PU module reached about 140 °C, far higher than that of PU (about 82 °C). Radical identification experiments demonstrated that both hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical contributed to the degradation of organic pollutant. Addition of Cl − , HPO 4 2− , HCO 3 − and natural organic matter in solution generated inhibitory effect on CBZ degradation. The prepared MXene@PU module exhibited excellent stability after long-time experiment. Importantly, the interfacial evaporation process produced abundant recycled water and no pollutant was detected in recycled water. This study provides a feasible way to utilize the renewable solar energy for removal of organic pollutants and production of clean water.

Facile Fabrication of Densely Packed Ti3C2 MXene/Nanocellulose Composite Films for Enhancing Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Electro-/Photothermal Performance

Zehang Zhou,Quancheng Song,Bingxue Huang,Shiyi Feng,Canhui Lu

The development of modern electronics has raised great demand for multifunctional materials to protect electronic instruments against electromagnetic interference (EMI) radiation and ice accretion in cold weather. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare high-performance multifunctional films with excellent flexibilty, mechanical strength, and durability. Here, we propose a layer-by-layer assembly of cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites (TM) on a bacterial cellulose (BC) substrate via repeated spray coating. CNFs are hybridized with Ti3C2Tx nanoflakes to improve the mechanical properties of the functional coating layer and its adhesion with the BC substrate. The densely packed hierarchical structure and strong interfacial interactions endows the TM/BC films with good flexibility, ultrahigh mechanical strength (>250 MPa), and desirable toughness (>20 MJ cm–3). Furthermore, benefiting from the densely packed hierarchical structure, the resultant TM/BC films present outstanding EMI shielding effictiveness of 60 dB and efficient electro-/photothermal heating performance. Silicone encapsulation further imparts high hydrophobicity and exceptional durability against solutions and deformations to the multifunctional films. Impressively, the silicone-coated TM/BC film (Si-TM/BC) exhibits desirable low voltage-driven Joule heating and excellent photoresponsive heating performance, which demonstrates great feasibility for efficient thermal deicing under actual conditions. Therefore, we believe that the Si-TM/BC film with excellent mechanical properties and durability holds great promise for the practical applications of EMI shielding and ice accretion elimination.

Biocompatibility nanoprobe of MXene N-Ti3C2 quantum dot/Fe3+ for detection and fluorescence imaging of glutathione in living cells

Wen Luo,Huaxiao Liu,Xuan Liu,Lixiao Liu,Wenbo Zhao

MXene quantum dots have attracted much attention due to their great optical performance and excellent water solubility. Glutathione (GSH) plays a key role in living cells. In this study, a biocompatibility nanoprobe was prepared for detecting intracellular GSH based on MXene N-Ti 3 C 2 quantum dots (N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs). The N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs act as the fluorescence reporters and the ferric iron (Fe 3+ ) as the quenchers based on nonradiative electron-hole annihilation. When Fe 3+ encounters the amino group of N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs, the electrons of N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs in the excited state will transfer to the half-filled 3d orbitals of Fe 3+ , leading to the fluorescence quenching of N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs. When the N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs/Fe 3+ nanoprobe acts on the cancer cell MCF-7, the abundant GSH in the cancer cells can reduce Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , which will restore the fluorescence of N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs. The N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs/Fe 3+ nanoprobe displays a high sensitivity for GSH with a detection limit of 0.17 μM in range of 0.5−100 μM. It becomes a promising probe for detecting and showing cellular imaging of GSH in MCF-7 cells. The N-Ti 3 C 2 QDs/Fe 3+ nanoprobe might provide a new way for imaging-guided precision cancer diagnosis.

A novel one-step strategy for preparation of Fe3O4-loaded Ti3C2 MXenes with high efficiency for removal organic dyes

Yi Cui,Meiying Liu,Hongye Huang,Dongao Zhang,Junyu Chen,Liucheng Mao,Naigen Zhou,Fengjie Deng,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

Transition-metal carbides, nitrides or carbonitrides (named as MXenes) are a novel type of two-dimensional (2D) materials with the features of traditional 2D materials but more variable chemical compositions. MXenes and related materials have raised more and more research attention and been extensively explored for different applications. In this work, we developed a novel method to synthesize magnetic MXene composites (Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs) for the first time through a one-pot route, which relied on the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles into Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets via thermal treatment. The potential utilization of these Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs for catalytic degradation of organic dyes through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were also evaluated in details. We demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with size about 5 nm could be anchored onto Ti 3 C 2 with well dispersed state. The catalytic degradation results demonstrated that Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs possess extremely high degradation efficiency towards different organic dyes under optimal conditions. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra identified that both hydroperoxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) radicals were involved in the degradation process. This work reported a novel one-step method for fabrication MXenes based multifunctional composites, which show extremely high efficiency for AOPs. This method could also be extended for fabrication of many other multifunctional composites for various applications.

Two-dimensional CuAg/Ti3C2 catalyst for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia under ambient conditions: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Anmin Liu,Qiyue Yang,Xuefeng Ren,Mengfan Gao,Yanan Yang,Liguo Gao,Yanqiang Li,Yingyuan Zhao,Xingyou Liang,Tingli Ma

The Haber–Bosch process is one of the most widely utilized approaches for the synthesis of ammonia, and has many disadvantages, such as the high energy consumption and generation of large amounts of greenhouse gases. Therefore, the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has received significant attention, as it is more sustainable and environmentally friendly. In this study, we report a CuAg/Ti3C2 MXene catalyst for the electrocatalytic NRR. This MXene-based composite material exhibits remarkable performance for electrochemical synthesis of ammonia under ambient conditions. When measured in a 0.1 M KOH solution at an applied potential of −0.5 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), the catalyst achieved an ammonia production rate and faradaic efficiency of 4.12 μmol cm−2 h−1 and 9.77%, respectively. These values indicate excellent stability and selectivity compared with the previously reported 2D NRR electrocatalysts. Moreover, the results of density functional theory calculations illustrate that with preferable adsorption of N2, desorption of NH3, and suppression of the HER, CuAg/Ti3C2 is a promising catalyst for the NRR. The excellent electrical conductivity and fast electron transport in the CuAg/Ti3C2 catalyst are favorable for the evaluated electrocatalytic reaction. Both experimental results and DFT calculations reveal that CuAg plays a crucial role in the catalytic activity and electrical conductivity enhancement for Ti3C2 based materials.

Cu nanoclusters decorated Ti3C2 nanosheets composite with tetraenzyme mimic activities and the application for smartphone-assisted detection of hypoxanthine

Qinqin Yang,Xipeng Cui,Ying Qin,Tiantian Lei,Yu He,Gongwu Song

MXene-based nanozymes have increased research enthusiasm in the field of food safety and environment monitoring. Herein, the Cu NCs/Ti 3 C 2 NSs nanocomposites were prepared by modifying copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets (NSs) with a simple two-step method. The Cu NCs/Ti 3 C 2 NSs nanocomposites had outstanding tetraenzyme mimic activities, i.e. peroxidase (POD)-mimics, catalase (CAT)-mimics, ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO)-mimics and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-mimics. Modification of Cu NCs on Ti 3 C 2 NSs can enhance tetraenzyme mimic activities because of the synergistic catalytic effect between Cu NCs and Ti 3 C 2 NSs. The catalytic mechanism and steady-state kinetics of Cu NCs/Ti 3 C 2 NSs were also investigated. Based on the POD-mimic activity of Cu NCs/Ti 3 C 2 NSs, a simple and rapid colorimetric method was established for the on-site detection of hypoxanthine (Hx), with the linear range of 5–200 μM and limit of detection (LOD) was 0.25 μM. The visible color change with the increase of Hx concentration can be recognized by a smartphone APP to transfer the red (R), green (G) and blue (B) value for the quantitative analysis of Hx, with the linear range of 10–200 μM, which provided a convenient method for the real-time detection of Hx. This work not only provides a significant route to fabricate nanocomposite with outstanding tetraenzyme mimic activities but also offers a low-cost and rapid method for monitoring the freshness of aquatic products.
