Oxidation-resistant, stable and flexible Ti3C2Tx MXene/Polyimide composites for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal management

Ziheng Ye,Feihua Liu,Xiaoai Ye,Kaizheng Gao,Jingjing Luo,Xiangli Liu,Weiwei Zhao

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with outstanding physicochemical properties have shown huge potential in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding applications. However, the poor chemical stability and mechanical fragility have seriously hindered their practical use. Herein, we developed a novel pyrimidine-containing polyimide (PPI) and constructed Ti 3 C 2 T x /PPI (MP) composite films . The incorporation of PPI not only suppresses the oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 T x by forming Ti-N x interactions between the nitrogen-rich pyrimidine rings of PPI and the Ti centers of Ti 3 C 2 T x , but also enhances mechanical strength and durability of the composite film across a wide temperature range (-196–250 ℃). Compared with Ti 3 C 2 T x film, the MP film exhibits significantly improved oxidation resistance , which the EMI SE of MP film did not decrease after 14 days in 80 ℃/80 RH environment when the weight ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x and PPI reaches 11:4. Merely 1.4 dB decrease in EMI SE of the MP film was revealed after 200,000 bending cycles with a radius of 2 mm, and the EMI SE remained virtually unchanged after bending in liquid N 2 . Moreover, the composite film demonstrates excellent thermal management properties, including rapid thermal response, efficient electrothermal conversion, excellent durability and stability. The combination of desirable EMI shielding ability, ultrahigh flexibility, superior stability and durability, as well as ideal thermal management performance gives this material excellent potential for various applications.

Ni/Ag bimetallic nanoparticle-engineered Ti3C2Tx MXene composite as a SERS substrate for trace detection of thiram pesticide

Jinping Tang,Yuhai Wang,Chunxu Wang,Ziwei Yu,Jin Wang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has emerged as a powerful analytical tool for trace molecular detection, enabling identification of target analytes through their characteristic vibrational fingerprints. Its high sensitivity, selectivity, and non-destructive detection capabilities make it extremely valuable in fields such as biological detection, food safety, and environmental detection. Currently, metal carbonitride (MXene) as an emerging two-dimensional material has become a hot topic in the field of SERS. In this work, by combining the advantages of bimetallic nanoparticles and MXene nanosheets, Ni/Ag nanoparticles with different proportions were modified on monolayer MXene nanosheets through chemical reduction and transmetallation reactions for the rapid detection of thiram. The evaluation of the SERS performance of the MXene–Ni/Ag composite substrate for the Raman reporter molecule mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) demonstrates a high SERS performance factor (SPF) of 8.2 × 106, and a low detection limit of 10−10 M. Also, for the detection of the pesticide thiram, the substrate exhibits high sensitivity and reliable quantitative analysis capabilities, retaining detectable spectral features even at concentrations down to 10−9 M. Meanwhile, the substrate also exhibits a low relative standard deviation (RSD) value in reproducibility and maintains good stability over a certain period. Ni/Ag bimetallic nanoparticles provide high SERS activity, while MXene nanosheets effectively concentrate target molecules through their strong adsorption capacity. These results indicate that MXene–Ni/Ag composite substrates can serve as a highly effective SERS platform for sensitive and reliable environmental monitoring.

Molecular-Level Interfacial Chemistry Regulation of MXene Enables Energy Storage beyond Theoretical Limit

Minxia Jiang,Minxi Li,Chang Cui,Jie Wang,Yang Cheng,Yixin Wang,Xing Zhang,Jinwen Qin,Minhua Cao

Ti3C2Tx MXene often suffers from poor lithium storage behaviors due to its electrochemically unfavorable OH terminations. Herein, we propose molecular-level interfacial chemistry regulation of Ti3C2Tx MXene with phytic acid (PA) to directly activate its OH terminations. Through constructing hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) between oxygen atoms of PA and OH terminations on Ti3C2Tx surface, interfacial charge distribution of Ti3C2Tx has been effectively regulated, thereby enabling sufficient ion-storage sites and expediting ion transport kinetics for high-performance energy storage. The results show that Li ions preferably bind to H-bond acceptors (oxygen atoms from PA), and the flexibility of H-bonds therefore renders their interactions with adsorbed Li ions chemically “tunable”, thus alleviating undesirable localized geometric changes of the OH terminations. Meanwhile the H-bond-induced microscopic dipoles can act as directional Li-ion pumps to expedite ion diffusion kinetics with lower energy barrier. As a result, the as-designed Ti3C2Tx/PA achieves a 2.4-fold capacity enhancement compared with pristine Ti3C2Tx (even beyond theoretical capacity), superior long-term cyclability (220.0 mAh g–1 after 2000 cycles at 2.0 A g–1), and broad temperature adaptability (−20 to 50 °C). This work offers a promising interface engineering strategy to regulate microenvironments of inherent terminations for breaking through the energy storage performance of MXenes.

Electrocatalytic Self-Sterilizing PEG@Mn-Ti3C2Tx MXene Biosensor with Dual Antifouling Capability for Ultrasensitive Detection of Cardiac Troponin I

Meiling Lian,Haoquan Wang,Liuxing Chen,Da Chen,Qi Yang,Xuezhi Qiao

Electrochemical sensing devices often suffer from biofouling due to nonspecific adsorption of biomolecules and microorganisms in complex biological matrices. To address this challenge, we developed an efficient antifouling and self-sterilizing sensing interface by grafting polyethylene glycol (PEG) onto two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets for the accurate detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a gold-standard biomarker for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The Mn 2+ -intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x (Mn-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) exhibited enhanced electrochemical activity in a three-electron oxygen reduction reaction (3e - ORR), enabling in situ self-sterilization by activating molecular oxygen to generate hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which demonstrated potent antibacterial effects against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Density functional theory calculations revealed that Mn doping in MXene significantly reduced the free energy barrier of *OOH intermediate, promoting H 2 O 2 formation and subsequent reduction to •OH. The PEGylated Mn-Ti 3 C 2 (PEG@Mn-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) composite combined the superior hydrophilicity of PEG for effective protein repulsion with the enhanced conductivity of Mn-Ti 3 C 2 T x , enabling sensitive biosensing. Critically, the fabricated biosensor demonstrated high specificity for cTnI against common interferents and achieved reliable detection in spiked serum samples. It exhibited a broad detection range from 0.1   pg   mL -1 to 500   ng   mL -1 with an ultralow limit of 0.03   pg   mL -1 . This work presents a novel strategy for combating biofouling and paves the way for designing robust biosensors capable of accurate and long-term operation in clinically relevant environments, holding great promise for point-of-care diagnostics.

Comparative analysis of Nafion-functionalized few-layered vs. multilayered Ti3C2Tx MXene/SnS2 nanoflowers for ammonia detection with enhanced selectivity

Waqas Saeed,Ye Tian,Irshad Ahmad Mir,Baoji Miao,Amna Manzoor,Surjyakanta Rana,Xing Chen

Ammonia (NH3) detection at room temperature under varying humidity conditions is crucial for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and healthcare. However, ammonia detection remains a challenge due to the lack of sensitivity and selectivity of current room temperature based sensors. In this context, Ti3C2Tx MXene and flower-like SnS2 composites were investigated for NH3 sensing. A comparative analysis of multilayered and few-layered nanohybrid composites demonstrated that the few-layered configuration displayed a markedly enhanced response to ammonia. Its larger surface area, higher electrical conductivity, and higher number of active sites contribute to its superior gas diffusion and charge transfer properties. The composite was further functionalized with Nafion (NF) to enhance sensitivity and selectivity under humid conditions. In an optimized NF-functionalized few-layered Ti3C2Tx/SnS2 sensor, we achieved a 12.11 response ratio towards 100 ppm NH3, with a response time of 42 s and a recovery time of 156 s, as well as excellent selectivity towards interfering gases. Reliability tests conducted in humid environments confirmed the excellent operational stability and durability of the proposed sensor. These experimental results demonstrate that the developed few-layered Ti3C2Tx/SnS2/NF nanohybrid composite provides a highly durable, sensitive, and selective platform for NH3 detection in practical applications at room temperature.

Ti3C2Tx MXene-graphene composite films for wearable strain sensors featured with high sensitivity and large range of linear response

Yina Yang,Zherui Cao,Peng He,Liangjing Shi,Guqiao Ding,Ranran Wang,Jing Sun

Strain sensors featured with high sensitivities and large ranges of linear responses are currently under urgent needs. Herein, we present a spontaneously formed Ti 3 C 2 T x /graphene/PDMS layered structure, which can be divided into two layers when being stretched: a Ti 3 C 2 T x dominated brittle upper layer and a flexible graphene/PDMS composite bottom layer. The balance between the destruction and maintenance of the conductive pathways through the synergetic motion of the upper and bottom layers ensure a high and steady gauge factor of the senor in a wide strain range (e.g., gauge factors of 190.8 and 1148.2 in strain ranges of 0–52.6% and 52.6–74.1%, respectively). The Ti 3 C 2 T x /graphene/PDMS layered structure based strain sensor is also featured with a low detection limit (~0.025%), a high linearity (R 2  > 0.98), a high cycling stability (over 5000 cycles), and an accurate monitoring of full-range human motions. Different breathing patterns in yoga are distinguished to demonstrate the practicability of the sensor.

High-performance copper-matrix materials reinforced by nail board-like structure 2D Ti3C2Tx MXene with in-situ TiO2 particles

Lu Liu,Guobing Ying,Dong Wen,Yuexia Li,Kaicheng Zhang,Huihua Min,Cong Hu,Cheng Sun,Cheng Wang

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials based on MXenes have gained increasing importance in the field of strength reinforcement. However, the easy oxidation of MXenes has long been deemed unfavorable for reinforcement in high-temperature processing. Herein, high-shear mixing was used in present work for simple and efficient dispersion of MXenes in copper powders. Partial MXene sheets were also in-situ oxidized to TiO 2 particles to form nail board-like structure reinforcement (NSR) during spark plasma sintering (SPS) process at 600 °C, which allowed one to significantly improve the yield strength of copper matrix by up to 70.3%. Experimental characterization and modeling simulations enabled one to identify second phase strengthening as the main reason for increased yield strength of the composites. In particular, the mechanical engagement of NSR played an important role in strengthening. Meanwhile, the hardness of TiO 2 particles on NSR was found to be higher than that of the copper matrix, leading to enhancement in compressive yield strength. Also, the presence of MXene sheets on NSR slightly reduced the resistance of copper matrix composites . In sum, these findings look promising for designing novel MXene reinforced metal matrix composites with improved mechanical properties.

Fluorine-free and sustainable synthesis of Ti3C2Tx MXene via chelation-assisted alkaline etching for environmental sensing and photothermal applications

Chong Li,Chunjie Wu,Yufei Xiao,Siqi Zhu,Yuhan Li,Kunyi Tong,Chenhao Zhang,Hui Li

Two-dimensional MXene nanosheets have attracted extensive attention due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. However, the conventional synthesis of MXenes relies heavily on hazardous fluoride-based etchants, causing severe environmental and safety risks. Herein, we report a clean, fluorine-free, and sustainable strategy for synthesizing oxygen-terminated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene (Ff-Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via a novel chelation-assisted alkaline etching approach. By synergistically combining tetramethylammonium hydroxide with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, we successfully overcome the intrinsic aluminum-passivation bottleneck that severely restricts the etching efficiency of conventional pure alkaline systems. This dual-agent chelation system not only enables the controlled and efficient delamination of Ti 3 AlC 2 into monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets under extremely mild conditions but also delivers a record-high yield of 40%, representing a 60% improvement over existing fluorine-free methods. The resulting Ff-Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibits a highly hydrophilic, oxygen-rich surface (–OH, –O), which inherently enhances its electrochemical activity and light-harvesting performance. As an environmental sensor, it achieves ultrasensitive detection of p -nitrophenol with a low detection limit of 0.055 μM and a high sensitivity of 3.16 μA μM −1 cm −2 . Moreover, Ff-Ti 3 C 2 T x demonstrates exceptional near-infrared photothermal performance, with a mass extinction coefficient of 21.8 L g −1 cm −1 at 808 nm and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 42.1%. This work provides a scalable, environmentally benign, and high-yielding pathway for fluorine-free production of MXene and establishes Ff-Ti 3 C 2 T x as a versatile platform for next-generation environmental monitoring and sustainable energy applications.

Ti3C2Tx MXene-RAN van der Waals Heterostructure-Based Flexible Transparent NIR Photodetector Array for 1024 Pixel Image Sensing Application

Chuqiao Hu,Hao Chen,La Li,Hui Huang,Guozhen Shen

The enriched surface functional group such as  OH termination and unique 2D structure of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene provide the feasibility to form hydrogen bonds with organic photosensitive materials as van der Waals heterostructures, thus can realize the improved photoresponsivity of near infrared (NIR) photodetectors (PDs). In this work, an organic–inorganic van der Waals heterostructure-based NIR PD array is designed using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene as conductive electrodes and RAN film as active materials (Ti 3 C 2 T x -RAN PDs). The on-off ratio of the fabricated devices shows 6.25 times higher than that of PDs using thermal evaporated Au electrode (Au-RAN PDs) under 1064 nm laser excitations. The fabricated Ti 3 C 2 T x -RAN NIR PDs also possess outstanding mechanical stability with no obvious photoresponse degradation under different bending states and high transparency with a transmittance above 70% in the visible region. Owing to the high performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x -RAN PDs, a 1024-pixel (32 × 32) image sensor array is fabricated to achieve delicate, vivid, and higher resolution imaging of a “deer,” opening up a new avenue for the biomimetic vision and flexible wearable accurate image sensing.

Tough and electrically conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene–based core–shell fibers for high–performance electromagnetic interference shielding and heating application

Liu-Xin Liu,Wei Chen,Hao-Bin Zhang,Yu Zhang,Pingping Tang,Danyang Li,Zhiming Deng,Lvxuan Ye,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Although transition metal carbide (MXene) fibers are highly electrically conductive, the poor spinnability of neat MXene dispersion and the brittleness of the conductive fibers limit their applications. Herein, a coaxial wet spinning assembly strategy is adopted to fabricate mechanically strong and electrically conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-based core–shell fibers with regenerated cellulose (RC) as the tough component and graphene oxide/MXene (GM) as the conductive components. By an optimal structure design, the hollow RC@GM 90 fiber with the RC shell exhibits an increased strength of 134.7 MPa, a high toughness of 14.1 MJ m −3 , a large elongation at break of 13%, and a high conductivity of 2.37×10 3 S m −1 . By sewing on a textile substrate, the hollow RC@MXene fibers with a high conductivity of 3.68×10 4 S m −1 provide an extraordinary electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of over 90 dB and outstanding solar-thermal energy conversion performances. Similarly, by improving spinnability of the MXene spinning dope with an aqueous dispersion of GO, solid core–shell GM@RC fibers with conductive GM shells are fabricated by the coaxial spinning, and the chemically reduced GM@RC fibers exhibit a high conductivity of 9.90×10 4 S m −1 and excellent electro-thermal energy conversion performances.

Ti3C2Tx MXene-Loaded 3D Substrate toward On-Chip Multi-Gas Sensing with Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) Barcode Readout

Kuo Yang,Kai Zhu,Yuanzhe Wang,Ziting Qian,Yizhi Zhang,Zhaoyan Yang,Zhuyuan Wang,Lei Wu,Shenfei Zong,Yiping Cui

Gas sensors lie at the heart of various fields ranging from medical to environmental sciences, and the demand of gas sensors is instantly expanding. However, in the face of complex gas samples, how to maintain high sensitivity while performing multiplex detection still puzzles the researchers. Here, by introducing Ti3C2Tx MXene into a microfluidic gas sensor with a three-dimensional (3D) transferable SERS substrate, a powerful gas sensor having both multiplex detecting ability and high sensitivity is demonstrated. The employ of MXene endows the sensor with a universal high adsorption efficiency for various gases while the generation of in situ gas vortices in the sophisticated nanomicro structure extends the molecule residence time in SERS-active area, both leading to the increased sensitivity. In the proof-of-concept experiment, a limit of detection (LOD) of 10–50 ppb was achieved for three typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) according to the intrinsic SERS signals of gas molecules. Besides, the well-designed periodic 3D structure solves the general repeatability problem of SERS substrates. In addition, the detailed composition of gas mixture was revealed using classic least-square analysis (CLS) with an average accuracy of 90.6%. Further, a chromatic barcode was developed based on the results of CLS to read out the complex composition of samples visually.
