Sulfonated Ti3C2Tx to construct proton transfer pathways in polymer electrolyte membrane for enhanced conduction

Jiakui Zhang,Yahua Liu,Zhiqiang Lv,Tongkun Zhao,Ping Li,Yilei Sun,Jingtao Wang

Here, Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets, a representative of MXenes, with lamellar structure and hydrophilic surface are prepared, and then functionalized with sulfonated polyelectrolyte brushes (Ti 3 C 2 T x -SO 3 H) through a facile surface-initiated precipitation-polymerization. The Ti 3 C 2 T x -SO 3 H is then utilized as a new nanofiller to fabricate hybrid proton exchange membrane , where both acidic sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and basic chitosan (CS) are employed as polymer matrixes . The resultant hybrid membranes are systematically characterized and measured including their microstructures, water uptake and proton conduction properties. The results demonstrate that using the sulfonated polyelectrolyte brushes, Ti 3 C 2 T x -SO 3 H sheets construct efficient proton transfer pathways and connect the inherent conduction channels/paths in polymer phase . This significantly enhances the proton conduction of polymer membrane including SPEEK membrane and CS membrane , under both hydrated condition and anhydrous condition. Particularly, the incorporation of 10 wt.% Ti 3 C 2 T x -SO 3 H readily offers 144% and 66% increase in proton conductivity , respectively, to SPEEK membrane and CS membrane under hydrated condition. Furthermore, the hybrid membranes achieve improved thermal and mechanical stabilities. These results herald further advances to preparing functionalized MXenes and their relevant hybrid materials with enhanced performances.

Synthesis of two-dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene using HCl+LiF etchant: Enhanced exfoliation and delamination

Tian Zhang,Limei Pan,Huan Tang,Fei Du,Yanhua Guo,Tai Qiu,Jian Yang

Herein, enhanced exfoliation and large-scale delamination of two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene using etchant of HCl + LiF, instead of HF, in which both etching and intercalation were achieved in exfoliation process, were thoroughly investigated with the focus on the effects of two critical factors, reaction temperature and washing solution. Increasing etching temperature promotes the exfoliation process, i.e., the transformation from Ti 3 AlC 2 to multilayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, whereas simultaneously results in an aggravated surface oxidation of MXene layers formed after the extraction of Al. As a result, delamination ratio increases firstly and then decreases, and the samples etched at 35 °C show the highest delamination ratio. Compared with the distilled water, washing the exfoliation products using ethanol significantly improves the delamination ratio of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene by co-intercalation of larger alcohol molecule and more impurity ions and a large scale delamination of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with a delamination ratio as high as 29.2% was obtained by simple sonication for 1 h, without additional intercalation step required, after washing using ethanol. The possible exfoliation reactions by HCl + LiF solution were proposed. Using the as-fabricated stable suspensions of delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes, flexible, free-standing Ti 3 C 2 T x papers with tailored thickness, hydrophilic surface and excellent conductivity, typically 2 × 10 5  S/m at 5 μm in thickness, were prepared. As anode for lithium ion batteries , the delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene obtained reversible capacities of 226.3 mAh g −1 , 137.9 mAh g −1 ,102.0 mAh g −1 and 47.9 mAh g −1 respectively at the current density of 100, 300, 1000 and 3000 mA g −1 , which are superior to those of the Ti 3 C 2 MXene prepared by conventional HF process.

Enhanced electromagnetic absorption properties of the double-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene absorber with orthogonal microstructures

Yuanhao Ning,Shuang Yang,Xianxian Sun,Shasha Wang,Lei Liang,Yuanjing Cheng,Ye Yuan,Yibin Li

Transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) with excellent properties have broad prospects in electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA). In this paper, a unidirectional freeze-casting method was utilized to design a double-layer MXene absorber with orthogonal microstructures. The perpendicular and parallel samples (associated with the unidirectional freeze-casting direction), perform their respective roles in the designed double-layer absorber. The perpendicular sample with various attenuation techniques is employed as an electromagnetic wave attenuation layer, while the parallel sample with good impedance matching conditions is utilized as an impedance matching layer. Consequently, the entire absorber exhibits favorable EMA characteristics. Upon incidence of electromagnetic waves onto the parallel terminus, it is observed that the sample measuring 4.6 mm in thickness exhibits a minimal reflection loss (RLmin) of −60.8 dB at a frequency of 6.63 GHz, with a parallel end thickness accounting for 25%. In addition, the sample with a thickness of 2.6 mm displays a noteworthy maximal effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) amounting to 9.4 GHz, given a parallel end thickness of 20%. A thorough analysis of the impedance matching conditions and electromagnetic wave attenuation mechanisms of each sample reveals that the double-layer MXene absorbers with orthogonal microstructures can significantly increase the viability of MXenes in EMA.

Controllable synthesis of 3D PdCu/Ti3C2Tx hierarchical nanostructures for chemiresistive room temperature H2 sensors

Changkun Qiu,Hao Zhang,Qingrun Li,Yifan Song,Fei An,Haozhi Wang,Shiqiang Wang,Liang Zhu,Chunxiao Lv,Dongzhi Zhang

To enhance the detection performance of hydrogen (H 2 ), we employed a self-sacrificing template method to prepare a three-dimensional (3D) PdCu-modified Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite , denoted as PdCu/Ti 3 C 2 T x . Within 3D PdCu/Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite, PdCu as the active center component, was evenly distributed on Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets . The unique architecture increased the exposure of active center sites, while the Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets provided additional gas diffusion channels, thereby contributing to improved gas sensing performance. Comparing to PdCu nanoparticles , PdCu/Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited an enhancing response and a fast response time of 4 s to 0.5 % H 2 . PdCu/Ti 3 C 2 T x also showed an ultra-low detection limit of 0.1 % H 2 and excellent repeatability, selectivity and long-term stability. The outstanding gas sensing performance could be attributed to the 3D structure and the heterostructure between PdCu and Ti 3 C 2 T x . The insights gained from this study provide novel perspectives for designing and synthesizing high-performance gas-sensitive materials.

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of a TiO2-Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite with small sized TiO2 nanoparticles

Xuefeng Zhang,Yong Liu,Shangli Dong,Zhuyu Ye,Yu Guo

A TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite was prepared using a simple and facile one-step hydrothermal method . The small sized TiO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized and assembled on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets using Ti 3 C 2 T x itself as titanium source by in-situ technique. The microstructure of TiO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposite was characterized by means of XRD、FESEM、TEM、XPS and Raman, respectively. The effects of ethanol and hydrothermal holding time on the size of TiO 2 nanoparticles were investigated. The results show that adding proper amount of ethanol into pure water results in decrease of the size of TiO 2 nanoparticles. Under ethanol-water mixed solution, increasing the time of hydrothermal treatment results in growth and even aggregation of TiO 2 nanoparticles. The TiO 2 nanoparticles with average particle size of 30   nm were obtained when the hydrothermal treatment was conducted in ethanol-water mixed solution at 200   ℃ for 12   h.

Enhancing Methylene Blue Adsorption Performance of Ti3C2Tx@Sodium Alginate Foam Through Pore Structure Regulation

Yi Hu,Hongwei Wang,Xianliang Ren,Fang Wu,Gaobin Liu,Shufang Zhang,Haijun Luo,Liang Fang

Pore structural regulation is expected to be a facile way to enhance the adsorption performance of MXene. In this work, spherical foam composites consisting of Ti3C2Txand sodium alginate (SA) were synthesized via a vacuum freeze-drying technique. By varying the solution volume of Ti3C2Tx, four distinct Ti3C2Tx@SA spherical foams with honeycomb-like and lamellar structures with a pore diameter in the range of 100–300 μm were fabricated. Their methylene blue (MB) adsorption performances were then systematically compared. The results revealed that the honeycomb-like porous-structured spherical foams have a significantly higher adsorption capacity than their lamellar counterparts. Notably, the Ti3C2Tx@SA honeycomb-like porous foam exhibited a remarkable maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 969 mg/g, positioning it at the forefront of MB adsorbent materials. Respective analysis of the adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherm model indicated that this MB adsorption of Ti3C2Tx@SA honeycomb-like porous foam is characterized to be a physical, endothermic, and monolayer adsorption. The Ti3C2Tx@SA honeycomb-like porous foam also demonstrated excellent resistance to ion interference and good reusability, further attesting to its substantial potential for practical applications. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was employed to elucidate the adsorption mechanism, which was found to involve the synergistic effect of electrostatic adsorption and amidation reaction. This work not only offers new avenues for the development of high-performance adsorption materials but also provides crucial insights into the structural design and performance optimization of porous materials.

High-performance Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitor based on 3D K+-intercalated Ti3C2TX hydrogel cathode

Haiping Wang,Xingyu Wang,Xinmiao Liu,Shuwei Zhang,Shutong Meng,Wenjie Yan,Xin Zhang,Zhansheng Lu,Zenghui Qiu,Haijun Xu,Jiaqi He

Aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) exhibit great potential for energy storage and conversion devices, owing to their inherent safety and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, the structure of traditional porous carbon cathodes hinders the zinc-ion diffusion kinetics, rendering the energy densities of conventional ZHSCs uncompetitive and severely impeding their practical applications. 2D transition metal carbides/nitrides, known as MXenes, exhibit excellent conductivity and abundant surface functional groups, qualifying them as ideal candidates for constructing high-capacity cathodes in high-performance ZHSCs. This study presents the fabrication of a ZHSC utilizing 3D porous K + -intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T X -reduced graphene oxide (K + -Ti 3 C 2 T X -RGO) hydrogel as cathode, paired with a zinc foil as anode. Upon treatment with KOH solution, Ti 3 C 2 T X undergoes K + ion intercalation into its nanosheets, resulting in partial elimination of terminal -F groups and expansion of the MXene interlayer spacing. Subsequently, large-scale graphene oxide (GO) was employed as a conductive binder to interconnect the intercalated multilayer Ti 3 C 2 T X , and a reducing agent was incorporated to facilitate self-assembly into a hydrogel. This approach augmented the accessibility of ions and facilitated their transport within the resultant structure. The ZHSC, fabricated with this composite cathode, synergistically integrates the supercapacitor’s high-power density and the battery’s high energy density. The results indicate that the ZHSC exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, featuring a high specific capacitance of 253.86 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and an impressive energy density of 141.03 Wh kg −1 at 999.99 W kg −1 . Notably, after 5000 charge-discharge cycles at 10 A g −1 , the ZHSC maintained a capacitance retention rate above 87.96 %, highlighting its exceptional cycling stability.

Functionalization Ti3C2Tx as highly sensitive and selective SERS substrate by reduction rapid synthesis strategy

Ruoyu Zhang,Shan Li,Baoru Liu,Xinyu Yang,Weijun Kang,Lianfeng Ai

In this study, we designed and prepared a novel, stable, and sensitive membrane-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on the synergistic interaction of two-dimensional MXene material Ti 3 C 2 Tx and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Using this AgNPs/Ti 3 C 2 Tx active substrate, a rapid SERS method for determination of paraquat residues in vegetables and fruits was developed. The AgNPs/Ti 3 C 2 Tx films were formed by dropping AgNO 3 solution onto the film and drying, which was synthesized by wet chemical method , and then filtered into an exfoliated Ti 3 C 2 Tx film. The Ti 3 C 2 Tx film can not only effectively enrich analytes, but also provide charge transfer resonance enhancement. The homogeneous AgNPs particle size of 40–120 nm on the substrate surface of Ti 3 C 2 Tx can effectively enhance the Raman signal intensity, and the enhancement factor of methylene blue can reach 10 5 . The detection limit of the detection method for paraquat in 9 fruit and vegetable matrices was lower than 3.0 μg/kg, and the limit of quantification was lower than 12 μg/kg. The results suggest that AgNPs/Ti 3 C 2 Tx platform could be used as a sensitive and reliable for food safety analysis based on SERS method.

Key to unlocking NO2 sensing performance of monolayer Ti3C2Tx: Regulating OH/F functional groups

Zhaorui Zhang,Jiahao Liu,Haiying Du,Xufei Zhao,Haoming Sun,Minghui Yang,Jinkui Chu

A surface functional group modulation method was used to regulate the NO 2 sensing performance of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor. The monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was synthesized from Ti 3 AlC 2 (MAX phase) by hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching. Ar/O 2 hybrid plasma treatment was used to regulate the ratio of hydroxyl and fluorine functional groups (OH/ F) in the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface structure. Room-temperature (RH) NO 2 sensor based on modified Ti 3 C 2 T x was fabricated by the dip coating method. The modified Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor has a higher gas response (45.31 %) to 50 ppm NO 2 compared with the untreated Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor which shows more excellent sensitivity and linearity with the NO 2 concentration of 5–50 ppm. It is due to that the presence of the hydroxyl potential on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface well amplifies the electronic surface activity of Ti 3 C 2 T x . Concurrently, the modified electronic structure augments the adsorption propensity of Ti 3 C 2 T x for O 2 (2.26 |eV|) and NO 2 (3.24 |eV|), thereby improving the NO 2 sensing capability of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor. These results demonstrate that Ti 3 C 2 T x with a high ratio of OH/ F functional groups has great potential in developing high-performance room temperature NO 2 sensors.

Low infrared emissivity and oxidation stability of Ti3C2Tx MXene-based composite with tannic acid

Jingxuan Cui,Jiao Wu,Aihu Feng,Yang Yu,Le Mi,Yun Yu

As a novel material with low infrared emissivity, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is promising in infrared stealth. However, the problem that MXene is easily oxidized poses a great challenge to its practical applications. In this paper, a tannic acid (TA) enhanced MXene oxidation stability composite film with low infrared emissivity is reported. TA effectively diminishes the pore size within the MXene film and leads to a tight and orderly arrangement of nanosheets, maintaining the low emissivity properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene itself. In addition, TA reacts preferentially with H 2 O/O 2 entering the film to consume the oxidizing source, while also being able to form coordination with Ti atoms for protection against oxidation, resulting in the composite film exhibiting excellent oxidation resistance. Remarkably, there is no formation of TiO 2 and the emissivity only rises from 0.16 to 0.18 after 72 h in the humid heat environment. Even after prolonged exposure to 20-day humid heat, it still maintains exceptional infrared emissivity (0.24) and stealth performance (reducing the radiant temperature of the object from 94 °C to 47.4 °C, △T = 46.6 °C). In contrast, the original Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene film has lost its infrared stealth performance after 10-day humid heat (△T = 5.3 °C) with an infrared emissivity of 0.76. This paper provides a new strategy to solve the problem of MXene performance stability in humid and oxidizing environments.

CuxO decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene composites for non-enzymatic glucose sensing with large linear ranges

Feng Lei,Chen Junji,Yang Min,Wang Juan,Yin Shougen,Zhang Deliang,Qin Wenjing,Song Jibin

Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/Cu x O composites were prepared by acid etching combined with electrochemical technique. The abundant active sites on the surface of MXene greatly increase the loading of Cu x O nanoparticles, and the synergistic effect between the different components of the composite can accelerate the oxidation reaction of glucose. The results indicate that at the working potential of 0.55 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), the glucose sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene/Cu x O composite presents large linear concentration ranges from 1 µM to 4.655 mM (sensitivity of 361 µA mM −1 cm −2 ) and from 5.155 mM to 16.155 mM (sensitivity of 133 µA mM −1 cm −2 ). The limit of detection is 0.065 µM. In addition, the sensor effectively avoids the oxidative interference of common interfering species such as ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid. The sensor has good reproducibility, stability and acceptable recoveries for the detection of glucose in human sweat sample (97.5-103.3%) with RSD values less than 4%. Based on these excellent properties it has great potential for the detection of glucose in real samples. Graphical abstract

Construction of CeO2/Ti3C2Tx heterojunction with antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities for diabetic wound healing

Yao Gong,Wenxin Qi,Wenyi Lu,Qing Chang,Yijun Xie,Jiao Wang,Xiaoyong Deng

Diabetic wounds are highly prone to persistent pathogenic infections due to the complex nature of their microenvironment, which significantly hinders the healing process under hyperglycemic conditions. In this study, we developed a bio-heterojunction enzyme system consisting of hollow CeO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene quantum dots (CeO 2 @MQD) integrated with glucose oxidase (GOx-CeO 2 @MQD). The GOx-CeO 2 @MQD system exhibits multifunctional enzymatic activities, including peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT)-like activity, resulting in the production of •OH and O 2 , alongside the consumption of glucose and glutathione (GSH). The incorporation of GOx effectively mitigates the hyperglycemic microenvironment by catalyzing glucose, leading to a significant increase in H 2 O 2 production, which is subsequently converted into bactericidal •OH through POD activity. Furthermore, H 2 O 2 can be catalyzed into H 2 O and O 2 via the CAT pathway, thereby alleviating inflammation caused by the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species. In vitro antibacterial assays demonstrated that the GOx-CeO 2 @MQD system achieved remarkable bactericidal efficiencies of 99.99% against E. coli and S. aureus at concentrations of 12.5 ppm and 2.0 ppm, respectively. In vivo experiments further revealed that GOx-CeO 2 @MQD significantly promoted angiogenesis, accelerated wound epithelialization, and induced a strong anti-inflammatory response, thus facilitating the regeneration of infected diabetic skin. This study proposes a novel approach for diabetic wound treatment by harnessing the synergistic effects of multiple enzyme-like activities.
