A novel non-enzymatic nitrite (NO 2 − ) electrochemical sensor was fabricated based on Au-poly(thionine) and tin oxide/graphene nanosheets (Au-PTH/SGN) nanocomposites . The morphology, composition and structure of the nanocomposites were characterized by Transmission electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. And the results indicated that homogeneous Au NPs with a size of approximate 80 nm and network nanostructure of PTH were attached on the surface of SGN nanomaterials. It had been also verified to satisfactory electrochemical results. The linear range of the proposed sensor was five orders of magnitude wide with the range of 0.2–127.7 (R 2 = 0.9991) and 127.7–2800 (R 2 = 0.9983) μmol L −1 , the detection limit was determined to be 0.06 μmol L −1 (S/N=3) and the sensitivity were 61.92 and 43.19 μA (mmol L −1 ) −1 cm −2 , respectively. Compared with the similar type of NO 2 − sensors previously reported, the linear range was expanded by at least an order of magnitude and the detection limit was kept at the same level as the lowest. Furthermore, the constructed Au-PTH/SGN/GCE displayed fast response, excellent stability, reproducibility, and high anti-interference ability for NO 2 − detection. Moreover, the as-proposed electrode was successfully applied for detecting NO 2 − in tap water and sewage samples with recoveries ranging from 97.3% to 103.0%97.3%-103.0% and 98.7–102.6%, respectively. The present work is expected to provide a useful route and reference for designing novel high performance electrochemical sensors and broaden the applications of sensors .

A series of carbon coated SnFe 2 O 4 (SFO) with octahedron, decahedron and tetrakaidecahedron morphologies have been synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process using ferrocene as common source of iron and carbon, applying a cationic surfactant CTAB to modify the morphology. Compared with the octahedral SFO (no CTAB) and decahedral SFO-0.1 (with CTAB at the first critical micelle concentration (CMC)), the tetrakaidecahedral SFO-0.7 (with CTAB at the second CMC) as an anode of LIB shows a high charge/discharge capacity of 481.0/482.7 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g −1 , and 281.0/281.6 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 6 A g −1 . The investigations on Li-ions inter-/de-intercalation kinetics show that the main rate-controlled step of SFO-0.7 is pseudocapacitive behavior, with higher contribution of 95.88% at a scan rate of 2.0 mV s −1 . The results suggest that the carbon layer obtained directly from ferrocene can effectively inhibit the volume expansion and structure damage of SnFe 2 O 4 . At the same time, more oxygen-vacancies increase the conductivity, the enhanced strength of the dominant (1 1 1) plane can adsorb Li-ions more easily, and the smaller SnFe 2 O 4 can reduce the diffusion distance of Li-ions, all of which lead to a high and stable Li-ions storage capacity and rate capability.

Tin-bearing middling, a hazardous solid waste produced during beneficiation of tin deposits and tin-bearing tailings, presents a serious environmental pollution risk due to high levels of As. This paper aims to explore an environmentally friendly technology to reduce toxic substances and prepare a high value-added bronze material from tin-bearing middling. The co-process for tin-bearing middling, anthracite , and copper is first proposed at 1073–1123 K. Variables like temperature, amount of added anthracite, and holding time were optimized. Those results showed that 95.56% Sn and 92.79% As were recovered; levels of Fe in the residue reached 73.52 wt%. During roasting, SnO 2 in the tin-bearing middling was initially transformed into SnO(g), then into an Fe–Sn spinel (Fe 3-x Sn x O 4 ) and Ca 2 SnO 4 , and finally a Cu–Sn alloy. Generation of the Fe–Sn spinel came primarily from substitution of Fe 2+ by Sn 2+ , but small amounts of Sn 4+ replaced Fe 3+ in Fe 3 O 4 . Meanwhile, FeAsS and FeAsO 4 were initially transformed into As 4 (g) and then solidified as a Cu–As alloy. Interestingly, the residual As existed as Fe–As alloy, but As leaching levels did not exceed 0.02 mg/L. After initial treatment, the Cu alloy can be prepared for bronze. Meanwhile, subsequent volatilization and solidification of As resulted in a significant reduction of arsenic-bearing waste that minimizes environmental risk.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a promising transparent conducting oxide material for photoelectric devices. In this work, the low-resistivity cubic ITO (c-ITO) nanopowders were synthesized via polyacrylamide gel route. The orthogonal experiment design was applied to optimize preparation process that was as follows: n (AM)/ n (MBAM) = 25:6, c (In 3+ ) = 0.3 mol/L, calcination temperature ( T ) = 700 °C, holding time ( t ) = 9 h. Subsequently, the thermal decomposition process of ITO xerogel, crystal structure, morphology, and electrical conductivity of the optimum sample were characterized systematically. The results indicated that the thermal decomposition of ITO xerogel was a multi-step kinetic reaction process, and the activation energy of reaction depended on the conversion of ITO xerogel. The powders were well indexed to cubic ITO crystal phase, and presented a concentrated particle size distribution of 34–54 nm and nearly spherical-like morphology. The low-resistivity value of 0.161 Ω·cm was obtained under the optimum preparation process. Moreover, the formation mechanism of ITO nanopowders prepared via polyacrylamide gel route was also investigated. The synthesized ITO nanopowders with low resistivity present wide application prospects of next-generation ITO functional materials.

Tin phosphides , especially phosphorous-rich tin phosphides, have recently attracted increasing attention as promising anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) because of their high theoretical capacities and suitable operating voltages. However, large volume changes during potassiation/depotassiation processes severely limit their performances. Herein, SnP 3 /carbon nanotubes (SnP 3 /CNTs) composite was successfully prepared through a ball-milling technique and investigated as a novel anode material for PIBs. The SnP 3 /CNTs-20 composite electrode delivered a reversible capacity of 373 mAh g −1 at 200 mA g −1 after 100 cycles and exhibited excellent rate capabilities. After 150 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 , a high capacity of 190 mAh g −1 remained. The superior performances of SnP 3 /CNTs-20 composite electrode were ascribed to the critical roles of CNTs matrix in buffering volume expansion, boosting electrical conductivity , and avoiding over thick SEI film. Furthermore, the phase transformation and structural evolution of the SnP 3 /CNTs-20 composite were identified by exploiting ex-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ex-situ scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. These results are expected to inspire the development of advanced tin phosphide based anode materials for PIBs.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), an important and value-added platform chemical, has inspired increasing attention. In this study, hafnium-tin composite oxides (Sn-HfO 2 ) were prepared by one-pot coprecipitation process and used as effective synergistic catalysts for 5-HMF synthesis from the conversion of glucose. Pyridine-FTIR results reveal that Sn-HfO 2 catalysts have strong Lewis and weak Brønsted acid sites. With 0.5Sn-HfO 2 as the catalyst, the highest yield of 5-HMF obtained from glucose was 75.5% with 99.5% conversion at 170 °C for 2 h in a methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK)/water biphasic system. Furthermore, the catalytic system also possesses excellent performance in converting other carbohydrates. The catalysis mechanism for the isomerization of glucose to fructose was explored by the density functional theory (DFT) method, indicating that Lewis acidic Hf active sites and proton mediator Sn-O species synergistically catalyzed the isomerization process, effectively lowering the reaction energy barrier. The cooperative action of terminal Hf-OH and Sn-OH also facilitated the formation of 5-HMF in fructose dehydration. 0.5Sn-HfO 2 could be reused for four runs without significant loss of catalytic activity. This approach provides the feasibility of composite oxides as synergistic catalysts for carbohydrate conversion to 5-HMF.

Electrode design and fabrication are of major importance for hydrogen evolution reaction applications, as far as high-efficiency and low-cost production of hydrogen are concerned. This paper reports on a titanium-nitride-ceramic-membrane electrode modified by MoS2 nanoflakes. Porous TiN-ceramic membranes were fabricated by phase-inversion tape-casting, followed by pressureless sintering. The as-prepared TiN membranes contained straight finger-like pores with an average diameter of 80 μm and smaller pores with an average diameter of 1–3 μm. Then, MoS2 nanoflakes were perpendicularly, densely, and uniformly grown on the surface of the TiN grains through the one-pot hydrothermal method. The optimized MoS2/TiN membrane electrode displayed a low overpotential of 113 mV at 10 mA cm–2, a Tafel slope of 78 mV dec–1, a small charge transfer resistance of 1.44 Ω, and a high double-layer capacitance of 504 mF cm–2. It also exhibited excellent stability with slight degradation after 80 h testing at an overpotential of 150 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4. The high conductivity of the TiN substrate, the similar chemical bonds, which favored the rapid electron transfer between MoS2 and TiN, the abundant exposed active sites of MoS2 nanoflakes, and the unique dual-pore structure resulted in the above superior electrocatalytic activity. The proposed successful utilization of conventional ceramic-membrane technology to prepare electrocatalysts based on membrane electrodes has potential for large-scale application in industrial hydrogen production.

Surface and interface engineering represents a powerful strategy for photocatalytic reduction of soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) into insoluble tetravalent uranium (U(IV)). Herein, we fabricated surface oxidized tin disulfide nanosheets (O-SnS 2 ) on tellurium nanowires (Te@O-SnS 2 ) as highly efficient and stable photocatalysts for U(VI) removal from wastewater. In this system, the Te nanowires increased the surface negative charge and resulted in the injection of hot electrons into O-SnS 2 nanosheets, which facilitated the binding and reduction of U(VI) on the abundant surface defects of O-SnS 2 . Under the irradiation of simulated sunlight, the removal efficiency toward U(VI) by Te@O-SnS 2 reached 97.3% in 60 min with the initial U(VI) concentration of 8 mg/L. Additionally, the maximum extraction capacity of U(VI) by Te@O-SnS 2 reached 704.8 mg/g at the initial U(VI) concentration of 200 mg/L. Furthermore, the Te@O-SnS 2 exhibited remarkable resistence ability for the interfering ions and a U(VI) removal efficiency > 88.4% over a wide range of pH, and maintained a high U(VI) removal efficiency (>92%) during cycle tests at pH 4.8.

Due to the high energy efficiency and a wide range of potential applications in daily life, bistable electrochromic devices (BECDs) have gained extensive attention in recent years. However, poor bistability and slow response rate are the main barriers, which restrict the development of BECDs. Herein, a transparent multidimensional electrode with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanofibers and gold nanoparticles was fabricated to improve both the bistability and responsiveness of devices. Its criss-crossed ITO nanofibers with high length-to-diameter ratios to reduce the distance of heterogeneous electron transfer and its gold nanoparticles to form a stable Au–S bond to avoid self-erasing of electrochromic materials have been demonstrated and discussed systematically. This device based on the transparent multidimensional working electrode had a shorter response time (1/5) and a longer bistability (12/1) compared with the prototype devices based on common fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes. Besides, this device had a promising electrochromic performance with a high coloration efficiency of 448.27 cm2/C and a switching stability with no significant attenuation after 1200 cycles.

A series of tungsten-tin bimetallic MFI type zeolites (WSn-MFI) with different Sn and W contents were hydrothermally synthesized using tetrapropyl ammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) as a template and polypyrrolidone as a co-surfactant. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), ammonium tungstate hydrate and tin (IV) chloride pentahydrate were used as the Si, W and Sn sources, respectively. The resultant samples were characterized by various techniques, and were evaluated as catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclohexene with hydrogen peroxide. The results reveal that all the W–Sn bimetallic zeolites have the typical MFI structure, and their relative crystallinities and morphologies change somewhat with the variety of W and Sn contents. Both the isolated framework SnO 4 species and the extra-framework SnO 2 species could be detected in all WSn-MFI samples, while only trace amount of extra-framework W species are present inside the channels/cages of the bimetallic zeolites. Compared with the monometallic zeolites of W-MFI and Sn-MFI, the bimetallic WSn-MFI zeolites exhibit much higher catalytic activity for the epoxidation of cyclohexene. Of these, the sample named WSn-MFI-a could efficiently convert cyclohexene to the corresponding epoxide with a high yield of 79% under an optimized reaction condition. A synergistic effect between the W and Sn species should play critical role in improving the catalytic activity and the epoxide selectivity of the bimetallic zeolite catalysts.

A highly sensitive photoelectrochemical sensor for the determination of ciprofloxacin has been fabricated using a small gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. It operates on the size-dependent enhancement behavior of AuNPs which efficiently increase the photocurrent intensity of the ITO/AuNPs photoelectrode due to plasmonic-excitation. The ITO/AuNPs photoelectrode self-assembled with two layers of approximately 5 nm gold nanoparticles showed the highest photocurrent response. Moreover, the adsorption of ciprofloxacin on the Au surface resulted in a decrease of photocurrent intensity at the ITO/AuNPs photoelectrode. This deceased photocurrent had a linear relationship with the ciprofloxacin concentration across a wide range from 0.1 nM to 10 µM with a low detection limit of 0.08 nM. This photoelectrochemical sensor is simple, cost-effective, highly sensitive, and very selective. This device may potential applications for the determination of ciprofloxacin in environmental waters. The proposed method was compared with other analytical methods reported in the literatures.

The icing phenomenon in nature can cause serious economic losses and security concerns. Eco-friendly anti-icing and deicing surfaces have been developed to address these issues. In this study, a photothermal superhydrophobic coating was fabricated by a facile polymerization process in the presence of micro–nano structured SiO2/TiN particles followed by a two-step spraying technology. The optimal coating displays remarkable superhydrophobic performance with a water contact angle of 159.1° and a water roll-off angle as low as 1.2°; it survives tape peeling, Taber abrasion, and solution immersion and demonstrates weather and corrosion resistance. More importantly, the SiO2/TiN coating shows excellent anti-icing/deicing property and can withstand multiple icing/thawing cycles. The excellent anti-icing/deicing performance is attributed to the robust superhydrophobic surface and the photothermal effect of TiN nanoparticles. Our fluorine-free design strategy provides important guidance for actual large-scale eco-friendly anti-icing/deicing application.
