A new strategy for multifunctional coatings with flame retardancy, superhydrophobicity and UV shielding ability on cotton fabrics (SFR cotton) was realized by step-by-step spraying ammonium phytate, lignin and hybrid nanoparticles of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with entrapped Fe 2 O 3 (PDMS@Fe 2 O 3 -MSNs). The surface adhesion PDMS@Fe 2 O 3 -MSNs constructed micro/nano-scale surface structure on SFR cotton fabric, which endowed superhydrophobic (WCA = 152 ± 1.3°), anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of the physical barrier provided by the PDMS@Fe 2 O 3 -MSNs and the intumescent flame-retardant properties of ammonium phytate and lignin, the SFR cotton fabric demonstrated excellent self-extinguishing performance under an open fire and left a char layer with 8.4 cm. In addition, due to the excellent UV-absorption ability of lignin and Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles, the SFR cotton fabric was able to shield the UV irradiation damages to rat skin. Furthermore, the SFR cotton fabric demonstrated remarkable durability against rigorous conditions, including ultrasonic washing, sandpaper abrasion, UV irradiation and exposure to strong acid/alkali environments. After 150 min of ultrasonic washing and 50 cycles of abrasion, the SFR cotton fabric could preserve its hydrophobicity, flame retardancy and UV shielding ability. In addition, the SFR cotton fabric delivered exceptional chemical stability and UV durability when exposed to strong acid/alkali for 24 h and UV irradiation (200 W) for 12 h, respectively. Significantly, the SFR cotton fabric could retain the original flexibility and breathability of pristine cotton fabric. Therefore, the simple and feasible strategy of multifunctional coatings has broad application prospects in advanced multifunctional textiles, military facilities and other fields.

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal The environmental health risks of acetochlor (ACE) have received widespread attention. The removal of ACE via the ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process was investigated in this study. The degradation of ACE in the UV/PS process fitted pseudo-first-order kinetics. ACE can be effectively removed in the pH range of 5.0–9.0. In addition, the removal efficiency of ACE increases with the increase in PS concentration. The experimental and calculation results prove that the contributions of UV irradiation, sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) and hydroxyl radicals (HO·) were 40, 52.1, and 6.43%, respectively, and the second-order rate constants between SO 4 •- and with ACE are 3.5 × 10 9 and 5.6 × 10 9 M −1 s −1 , respectively. The influences of different water matrices were explored. Both chloride ions and bicarbonate can inhibit the degradation of ACE, while the effects of sulfate ions and nitrate can be negligible. Humic acid (HA) has an inhibitory effect of ACE degradation. The intermediates were detected and the possible degradation pathway of ACE was proposed. The results of this study can provide technical support for the control of ACE in the environment. The degradation of acetochlor in the UV/PS process was investigated. The kinetic model of acetochlor degradation in the UV/PS process was proposed. Both UV irradiation, SO 4 •- , and are involved in the degradation of acetochlor. The degradation pathway of acetochlor was proposed in the UV/PS process.

With the ban of brominated flame retardants , organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been widely used. The ultraviolet combined sodium persulfate (UV/PS) process is a promising advanced oxidation process (AOPs), which effectively removes organic micropollutants by generating various reactive substances such as hydroxyl radical (•OH) and sulfate radical (SO• 4 − ). The degradation kinetics, influencing factors, degradation path, and toxicity of three organic phosphates , trimethyl phosphate (TMP), tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and triphenyl phosphine oxide (TPPO) were studied. The results showed that UV/PS could degrade OPEs efficiently, and 254 nm UV light was more conducive to the degradation of OPEs than 365 nm UV light, and the degradation of OPEs accelerated with the increase of PS concentration. Under acidic and neutral conditions, UV/PS was more conducive to the degradation of OPEs, and the concentration of NOM was inversely proportional to the degradation rate of OPEs, Cl − and SO 4 2− had almost no effect on the degradation of OPEs, while HCO 3 − has an inhibitory effect on the degradation of OPEs. UV/PS also has a good effect on the degradation of OPEs in actual water. •OH and SO• 4 − , as the main reactive radicals, participate in the degradation of OPEs. Hydroxylation , debenzene ring, demethylation , and ring opening reactions are the main reactions occurring in the process of OPEs degradation. The theoretical toxicity value of most intermediates is lower than that of the initial OPEs. This study reveals the transformation of OPEs in the UV/PS system and provides a new idea for wastewater treatment of OPEs.

Copper-based halides, a type of perovskite derivative, inherit their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability and also have the advantages of being nontoxic and stable. Despite the tremendous achievements of microfabrication in conventional halide perovskites, reports on copper-based halide array devices are rare due to their difficult high-quality crystallization. Here, by introducing single-crystal thin films grown by space confinement method as substrates, reliable photolithography based on their single crystals is successfully achieved and controllable homoepitaxial single-crystal arrays is demonstrated. By adjusting the substrate, angle, and growth time, the orientation, arrangement, and size of arrays could be controlled. Temperature and time are used to regulate the growth stage to obtain clean and appropriately sized arrays. ITO/Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 /ITO neuromorphic device based on homoepitaxial arrays is developed. The variation of synaptic plasticity could be controlled by the number and frequency of light pulses. The device successfully simulated the process of “learning, forgetting, and relearning” in the human brain, demonstrating the potential of application in sensing-storage-computing-integrated devices.

To achieve the unique advantages of silicone resin and the free-radical/cationic hybrid UV-curing mechanism, a free-radical/cationic hybrid UV-curable silicone resin (MTQ-TQ-T) is synthesized from commercially available siloxanes, hexamethyldisiloxane (MM, M segment), phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMS, T segment), γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (KH560, T segment), (3-methacryloxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (KH570, T segment), and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS, Q segment). UV-curing kinetics indicates that the polymerization efficiency of MTQ-TQ-T initiated by free-radical and cationic dual photoinitiators is better than that of a single photoinitiator. As the molar ratio of cationic to free-radical photoinitiators (C/R) increases, the double-bond conversion first increases and then decreases, but the epoxy group conversion is the opposite. The optimal C/R and dose of dual photoinitiators are 1.5 and 10 wt %, respectively. After UV-curing, the coating has excellent overall performance including a gel content of 87.8%, a Shore A hardness of 85, a tensile strength of 4.23 MPa, and an impact strength of 5.48 kJ/m2. Its thermal decomposition temperature of 5 wt % is 338 °C, and the yellowing index only increases by 0.98 after thermal aging at 85 °C for 72 h. Moreover, UVMTQ-TQ1-T0.33 (the molar ratio, T/Q of 1 and KH560/570 of 0.33) shows good hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 87°, and it is still 89° after thermal aging. In addition, the adhesion of coating increases with the increase of epoxy groups, where UVMTQ-TQ1-T1 (the molar ratio, T/Q of 1 and KH560/570 of 1) has optimal adhesion with a shear strength and 180° peel strength of 1.7 and 0.9 MPa, respectively. Therefore, this free-radical/cationic hybrid UV-curable silicone resin will be used as aging-resistant coatings.

The reactive diluent prepared by siloxane modified Trimethylene oxide can improve the performance of the UV curing system. Therefore, 1,7-bis [(3-ethyl-3-methoxyoxacylobutane) propyl] octadecylosiloxane (BEMOPOMTS) was synthesized from diethyl carbonate, trimethylopropanes, allyl bromide, and 1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7-octadecylosiloxane as the main raw materials. BEMOPOMTS can be used as reactive diluents in the field of cationic UV curing. It has good thermal stability, and the addition of BEMOPOMTS significantly improves the tensile strength and elongation at break of epoxy resin. Compared with the pure epoxy resin, adding 20% BEMOPOMTS increased the elastic modulus by 25% to 677 MPa.

Here we employ in-situ UV-Vis spectroscopy to monitor the sulfur redox reaction with oxygen-containing molecules as an additive, for example, biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid (BDC). Furthermore, Raman spectrum, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) measurements reveal that the formation of BDC-S

The most prevalent type of hemodialysis membrane is polysulfone (PSf). However, due to inadequate biocompatibility, it significantly compromises the safety of dialysis for patients. In this study, we modify the surface of the PSf membrane with 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (DBPh) groups to serve as anchoring sites during UV irradiation. Subsequently, a tailored sulfonated dihydroxy propyl chitosan (SDHPCS) is grafted onto the modified PSf membrane to compensate for the deficiencies in hydrophilic additives. The modified PSf membrane exhibits outstanding hydrophilicity and stability, as demonstrated by its characterization and evaluation. This paper focuses on investigating the interaction between platelet membrane formation, protein adsorption, and anticoagulant activity. The results show that the modified PSf membrane exhibits remarkable enhancement in surface hydrophilicity, leading to a significant reduction in protein and platelet adsorption as well as adhesion.

This study was conducted to understand the effects of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the physicochemical properties and the hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal ability of biochar. Structural and morphological analysis showed that UV irradiation increased the specific surface area of biochar and added a large amount of oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., carboxyl, lactonic, and hydroxyl) to biochar’s surface. Batch sorption experimental results showed that UV-modified biochar (UVBC) produced at the pyrolysis temperature of 300 °C, the irradiated time of 24 h, and the irradiation distance of 40 mm exhibited excellent Cr(VI) removal ability (from 1.11 mg/g for BC to 20.04 mg/g for UVBC, a 18.1-fold increase). The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm data agreed well with the pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model, respectively. Experimental and modeling results suggest that the oxygen-containing functional groups and specific surface areas of biochars were notably increased by UV irradiation, which enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption by surface complexation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of UVBC before and after reaction with Cr(VI) showed that reduction occurred during Cr(VI) adsorption. The energy consumption of UV modification is 2.7 MJ per gram of UVBC produced, which is comparable to that in activated carbon. The results showed that the method of UV modification of biochar is a very novel and effective method for the adsorption of Cr(VI) in solution.

Microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM), paraffin, with polymethylmethacrylate shell was prepared by introducing UV irradiation to an O/W emulsion polymerization for approximately 30 min under constant stirring. The results of differential scanning calorimetry analyses indicate that the latent heat and the content of paraffin of microcapsules are 101 J g −1 and 61.2 wt%, respectively. The phase transition temperature of MEPCM ranges from 24 to 33 °C. The MEPCM was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Thermal gravimetric analysis results show that the MEPCM is degraded into two distinguishable steps. Accelerated thermal cycling tests also indicate that the MEPCM displays a good thermal reliability. Gypsum boards composed of as-prepared MEPCM show a good temperature-regulated property. Based on all these results, it can be concluded that the microencapsulated paraffin as MEPCMs have good potential for thermal energy storage purposes such as phase change material slurries, solar space heating applications, textiles and building materials .

Structural color based textiles have attracted significant attention owing to their potential in facilitating environmentally-friendly and durable coloration processes. However, the improvement of color saturation in textiles based on structural color is still under continuous investigation. Additionally, there is a rising demand for textiles featuring specialized functionalities such as anti-bacteria and anti-ultraviolet properties in daily life. In this study, a “three-in-one” amorphous photonic structure (APS) and multi-functional textile design is performed to achieve high structural color saturation, UV protection, and anti-bacteria properties. In this system, poly(styrene-butyl acrylate-methacrylate) (P(St-BA-MAA)) colloidal particles are used as building blocks, black titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is used as black dopant , and water-soluble polyurethane (WPU) is used as the binder. The WPU demonstrates a significant capability to enhance the color fastness of APS/TiO 2 textiles. The strong absorption of incoherent scattered light by black TiO 2 in the visible range plays a crucial role in achieving a highly saturated APS-based textile. In addition, the doped black TiO 2 possesses strong UV–visible light absorption and anti-bacterial capabilities, thereby supporting the development of textiles functionalized with UV protection and anti-bacteria. Our proposed simplified approach to fabricating high color saturation and functionalized APS/TiO 2 textiles demonstrates significant potential for eco-textile coloring in line with market demands.
