Re-recognizing W/Mo promoter as a transformer changing inactive V into highly active catalytic species distribution

Qian Qi-Ling,Zeng Zhen-Yun,Chen Wan-Ting,Cheng Yu,Zhang Jia,Li Chuan-Hua,Qian Guang-Ren

The promoter is very important for effective catalysts, and the relationship among active species, promoter, and support is a hot topic in the field of catalysis. This work aims to investigate the influence of the promoter on the formation of effective active species. For this purpose, V was leached out from V-loaded TiO 2 (V/Ti) step by step, and the loaded V was classified into different species based on their performances in the catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene. As a result, when V/Ti was co-doped with Mo or W, the chlorobenzene conversion rate was increased from 48.1% to 54.0% (Mo) or 61.0% (W) at 210 °C. The enhancement was attributed to the redistribution of V species. Specifically, 7.8% of V was “Inactive” V on V/Ti. This “Inactive” V was transformed into an “Active” species. At the same time, “Highly-active V” amounts were increased from 86.0% (V 3.3 /Ti) to 88.1% (WV 3.3 /Ti) and 87.1% (MoV 3.3 /Ti). According to the mechanism investigation, when W and Mo coexisted with V during the synthesis, V 3+ was oxidized into V 5+ , which is easily invaded into the TiO 2 , created more strong acidic sites, and activated more active lattice oxygens. These are all in favor of the effective catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene. The new understanding of the promoter effect will help to produce a more effective catalyst using the same amount of active species. Graphical abstract

Achieving Ultra-Low Friction in Ti-6Al-4 V Alloy: Hydration Lubrication Mechanisms of HEC-Glycerol Composite

Sheng Dezun,Yu Hongliang,Zhang Xiao,Zhou Xin

Reducing alloy friction to achieve ultra-low friction is a valuable approach to save energy and reduce pollution from oil use, which is a major challenge for researchers. This study introduces a successful method to achieve ultra-low friction in Ti-6Al-4 V using a hydrated lubricant composed of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). And the effects of speed and concentration on lubricating were investigated. It was found that excessive sliding speeds may lead to lubricant detachment and consequent friction increase, indicating that the adsorption ability of HEC needs to be enhanced in future studies. In addition, when the concentration exceeds 5 wt%, wear loss tends to stabilize across tests with different concentrations, while the friction force increases with rising concentrations. Based on these findings, microscopic studies were conducted to investigate the mechanism of friction reduction. Notably, distinct topographic features resembling ‘valleys’ and ‘plateaus’ were identified on the wear scars in a nanoscale scope. The movement of the surfaces induces the hydrated HEC lubricant to flow from the lower valleys to the higher plateaus, suggesting elastohydrodynamic lubrication mechanisms to form robust films. The valleys serve as lubricant reservoirs, while the plateau tops support the lubricant films to prevent contacts between Ti-6Al-4 V and Si 3 N 4 . The schematic illustrations depict the microscopic mechanisms for achieving of ultra-low friction on Ti-6Al-4 V alloy.

Construction of Ionic Conductive Electrode/ Electrolyte Interphases via Li+ Coordination Regulator for 4.7 V Li/ LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 Batteries

Wei Wang,Yuqing Chen,Zixing Wang,Meichen Li,Liqiang Ouyang,Peitao Xiao,Jian-Fang Wu,Jilei Liu

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) using high-voltage nickel-rich layered cathode (LiNi x Co y Mn 1-x-y O 2 , NCM, x≥ 0.9), though delivering high energy density, suffer from critical instability of electrode/electrolyte interphases and structural degradation of NCM cathodes, causing rapid capacity fading. Here, trimethoxyboroxine (TMOBX) is used as a lithium-ion coordination regulator in the commercial carbonate electrolyte to improve the cycling stability of LMBs at high voltage. Owing to the strong polarized B─O bonds, TMOBX not only prefers to interact with Li + because of the high electron density of O, but also attracts more PF 6 − in the solvation structure due to the positively charged B, resulting in robust and ionic conductive electrode/ electrolyte interphases rich in P─F compounds, B─O and B─F species. Moreover, TMOBX effectively eliminates HF in the electrolyte, all of which can avoid lithium dendrites, and suppress corrosion of LiNi 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 (NCM90) and dissolution of transition metal ions. Consequently, the Li/Li symmetrical cells exhibit highly enhanced cycling stability of 500 h at 1 mA cm −2 , and the capacity retention of Li/NCM90 cells increases from 45.7% to 80.5% after 100 cycles at an ultrahigh cut-off voltage of 4.7 V.

Regulating Interfacial Nucleophilic Chemistry via Hybrid Electrolyte Enables Stable 4.8 V-Class Li-Rich||Li-Metal Batteries

Chenyang Jiao,Qizheng Zheng,Kang Zhang,Jiyuan Xue,Na Liu,Baodan Zhang,Yueli Lin,Xuequan Zhu,Changhao Wang,Hong-Gang Liao,Chong-Heng Shen,Yeguo Zou,Yu Qiao,Shi-Gang Sun

High-energy-density Li-rich layered oxide-based Li-metal batteries depend critically on the unique anionic redox. However, severe electrolyte decomposition and interfacial structural degradation hinder the longevity and stability of Li-rich||Li-metal batteries. Here, we show that a rational hybrid electrolyte design strategy can regulate interfacial chemistry through precise manipulation of cathode surface-exposed nucleophilic species. As a proof of concept, ethyl methyl sulfone is employed as the primary solvent due to its oxidative stability and resistance to nucleophilic attack, simultaneously strategically fabricating a fluorinated ether as a cosolvent that directs nucleophilic reaction toward its targeted functionality. Furthermore, this hybrid electrolyte design simultaneously facilitates the formation of a LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and reorganizes the solid electrolyte interphase on the Li metal from the preferential decomposition of cosolvents and anions. As a result, ultrahigh Coulombic efficiency (CE) (>99.4%) for Li-rich cathodes and enhanced Li-metal plating/stripping reversibility are achieved. Consequently, the optimized electrolyte demonstrates exceptional cycling stability, retaining 92% capacity over 100 cycles with ultrahigh average CE (>99.3%) under demanding conditions (limited Li supply, N/P = 2). Remarkably, this hybrid electrolyte enabled superior operation with anode-free cell architectures and enabled extreme temperatures (−30 to 55 °C) cycling. By effectively transforming detrimental nucleophilic attack into interfacial enhancement, this work establishes a new paradigm for electrolyte design in utilizing anionic redox chemistry.

Enabling Stable Cycling of 4.2 V High-Voltage All-Solid-State Batteries with PEO-Based Solid Electrolyte

Jiliang Qiu,Xinyu Liu,Rusong Chen,Qinghao Li,Yi Wang,Penghao Chen,Luyu Gan,Sang-Jun Lee,Dennis Nordlund,Yijin Liu,Xiqian Yu,Xuedong Bai,Hong Li,Liquan Chen

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid electrolytes are expected to be exploited in solid-state batteries with high safety. Its narrow electrochemical window, however, limits the potential for high voltage and high energy density applications. Herein the electrochemical oxidation behavior of PEO and the failure mechanisms of LiCoO 2 -PEO solid-state batteries are studied. It is found that although for pure PEO it starts to oxidize at a voltage of above 3.9 V versus Li/Li + , the decomposition products have appropriate Li + conductivity that unexpectedly form a relatively stable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer at the PEO and electrode interface. The performance degradation of the LiCoO 2 -PEO battery originates from the strong oxidizing ability of LiCoO 2 after delithiation at high voltages, which accelerates the decomposition of PEO and drives the self-oxygen-release of LiCoO 2 , leading to the unceasing growth of CEI and the destruction of the LiCoO 2 surface. When LiCoO 2 is well coated or a stable cathode LiMn 0.7 Fe 0.3 PO 4 is used, a substantially improved electrochemical performance can be achieved, with 88.6% capacity retention after 50 cycles for Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 coated LiCoO 2 and 90.3% capacity retention after 100 cycles for LiMn 0.7 Fe 0.3 PO 4 . The results suggest that, when paired with stable cathodes, the PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes could be compatible with high voltage operation.

Lithium-Aluminum-Phosphate coating enables stable 4.6 V cycling performance of LiCoO2 at room temperature and beyond

Xiao Wang,Qian Wu,Siyuan Li,Zheming Tong,Duo Wang,Houlong L. Zhuang,Xinyang Wang,Yingying Lu

Lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), a promising cathode with high compact density around 4.2 g cm −3 , delivers only half of its theoretical capacity (137 mAh g −1 ) due to its low operation voltage at 4.2 V (vs. Li/Li + ) under commercial conditions. To improve its practical capacity, higher cut-off voltages are often adopted, which result in severe structure destruction and cause side reactions with electrolyte. The safety concerns of oxygen release further restrict the application of LCO. Here, we achieve stable cycling of LCO at 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li + ) through a surface engineering strategy by using lithium-aluminum-phosphate composite coating materials . This strategy prevents direct contact between cathode and electrolyte, reducing the loss of active materials without hindering the lithium ion migration. After calcination , a doping layer (or solid solution) includes phosphorus and aluminum is formed, which helps maintain the surface structure and stabilize the oxygen atoms around particle surface and shows high ion mobility when operated at 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li + ). All these benefits synergistically contribute to the stable cycling of LCO at 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li + ) with high capacity retentions of 88.6% (30°C) and 78.6% (45°C), respectively, after 200 cycles.

Orally engineered V-type starch nanohelices for orchestrated polyphenol delivery restore the gut-metabolism axis in obesity

Shiyu Fan,Chi Zhang,Pengpeng Sun,Haining Shi,Ying Tian,Aiqian Ye,Jian He,Yutong Wu,Qiaozhi Zhang,Linglin Fu

The oral delivery of bioactive compounds for obesity management is severely hampered by their low bioavailability and lack of targeted release. To address this, we engineered a V-type single-helix starch (HAMS) via guest-directed molecular assembly as an advanced oral delivery platform. This system features well-defined nanocavities (~1.2 nm) that achieved 90.7% encapsulation efficiency for hydrophobic polyphenols (e.g., quercetin) and provided robust protection against gastrointestinal degradation. The crystalline architecture enabled enzyme-responsive dissociation, yielding a sustained polyphenol release profile and a 4.3-fold enhancement in systemic bioavailability compared to conventional carriers. In a diet-induced obesity mouse model, the HAMS-polyphenol co-assembly (HAMS-QP) elicited multifaceted therapeutic effects: it significantly mitigated body weight gain, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, and hepatic steatosis. Crucially, HAMS-QP restored gut barrier integrity, as evidenced by enhanced expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin) and mucin-2, and alleviated chronic inflammation. Mechanistic studies revealed that these benefits were mediated through the suppression of PI3K-AKT pathway overactivation. Furthermore, HAMS-QP functioned as a potent prebiotic, selectively enriching beneficial gut microbiota (e.g., Lactobacillus , Akkermansia ) and boosting the production of protective short-chain fatty acids, particularly butyrate. Collectively, our work presents HAMS as a versatile and efficacious biomaterial that integrates precise encapsulation, controlled release, and host-microbe crosstalk into a single therapeutic strategy for metabolic disorders via the gut-metabolism axis.

Fabrication of flower clusters-like superhydrophobic surface via a UV curable coating of ODA and V-PDMS

Lixiang Shen,Yingying Lai,Heqing Fu

In this work, a flower clusters-like superhydrophobic surface was fabricated via an ultraviolet (UV) curable coating of octadecylamine (ODA) and vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (V-PDMS). ODA self-assembled into many flower clusters-like structures on the surface of the coating, increasing the roughness of the coating surface without additional nanoparticles. V-PDMS formed a highly crosslinked network under a UV lamp, which would be helpful for a robust superhydrophobic surface. The obtained PDMS/ODA fabric showed water contact angle of 161° and sliding angle of 5°. The durability of the superhydrophobic surface was tested by water impacting, tube brush scrubbing, knife scratching, hand twisting, finger pressing, tape adhesion, abrasion, continuous rinsing, and chemical conditions. The experimental results indicated that the superhydrophobic surface have good durability for long service life. Moreover, the PDMS/ODA fabric could selectively absorb oils from water with good separation performance. This work will provide a facile, low cost, and versatile method to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces, and enhance their efficiency of oil–water separation. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Efficient preparation of AlV65 alloy through aluminothermic reduction of sodium metavanadate precipitated from shale V-rich solution

Zhang Zihanyu,Zhang Yimin,Liu Hong,Xue Nannan,Hu Pengcheng,Bo Wenbin

The use of Al–V alloys as intermediate additives is pivotal for producing high-performance Ti alloys. Traditionally, the synthesis of these alloys relies on high-purity V 2 O 5 , with sodium metavanadate as an essential intermediate in V 2 O 5 production. This study explores an alternative approach utilizing sodium metavanadate directly, offering an aluminothermic process to alleviate the environmental impact and reduce the time required for V 2 O 5 preparation. Al–V alloys are synthesized using sodium metavanadate derived from a shale V-rich solution, and the impurity-migration behaviors are comprehensively analyzed, specifically focusing on Fe, Al, and Na. The results reveal that Al interacts with CaO to form a slag phase that is different from the alloy, whereas Na undergoes a sequence of reductions (NaVO 3 → Na 2 V 2 O 5 → NaVO 2 → Na) and volatilizes at 25–1200°C, thereby avoiding incorporation into the alloy. Fe, reduced by Al, enriches the alloy phase and induces a phase transition (Al–V → Al–Fe → Fe–V) in the presence of excess Fe. Sodium metavanadate (Fe ≤ 0.05wt%) derived from the shale V-rich solution enables the production of a uniform AlV65 alloy with 66.56wt% V, 33.14wt% Al, 0.08wt% Fe, 0.07wt% C, 0.02wt% N, and 0.12wt% O. These results establish a streamlined, efficient framework for the future preparation of Al–V alloys from shale V-rich solutions.

Suppressing lattice oxygen-induced interfacial degradation via a multifunctional siloxane additive for 4.8 V LRMO‖Li batteries

Guiqiang Ai,Changquan Wu,Rui Su,Xuerui Yang,Naigen Zhou

Lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LRMO) are promising cathodes for high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries owing to their high operating voltage and large reversible capacity, but suffer from severe interfacial degradation at high voltages (≥4.8 V), primarily triggered by lattice oxygen release, electrolyte oxidation, and HF-induced corrosion. Herein, we design a multifunctional siloxane-based electrolyte additive, 1,3,5-tris(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)methylcyclotrisiloxane (TFSO), to regulate these coupled degradation processes. TFSO simultaneously acts as an oxygen scavenger and HF trap, suppressing lattice oxygen reactivity while converting HF into stable Si F/Si O species. Meanwhile, it promotes the formation of robust, inorganic-rich CEI/SEI layers, enabling dual interfacial stabilization and uniform lithium deposition. In addition, TFSO reconstructs the Li + solvation structure, reducing solvent participation in interfacial side reactions. As a result, the LRMO‖Li cell achieves 92.7% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 4.8 V, along with excellent wide-temperature performance (82.7% at 55 °C and 160 mAh g −1 at 0 °C). This work highlights an effective electrolyte design strategy for mitigating oxygen-triggered interfacial degradation in high-voltage lithium metal batteries. A multifunctional siloxane-based additive (TFSO) enables stable cycling of LRMO||Li batteries at 4.8 V by scavenging lattice oxygen and corrosive HF, forming robust dual interphases, and regulating Li + solvation to deliver excellent performance and wide-temperature tolerance. Activating the Mn2+/Mn7+ redox for a neutral Zn||Mn-compound battery with 2.2-V discharge plateau

Chuan Li,Xiu Hu,Rong Zhang,Shaoce Zhang,Huilin Cui,Qinshun Nian,Yuwei Zhao,Chunyi Zhi

In 1952, the first commercially alkaline Zn||MnO 2 primary battery was developed, which is based on Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ redox reactions (MnO 2 ↔Mn 2 O 3 ). Subsequently, the single-electron (Mn 3+ /Mn 2+ and Mn 7+ /Mn 6+ ) and two-electron (Mn 4+ /Mn 2+ ) redox reactions of Mn compound (Mn-Comp) were achieved in aqueous Zn-based batteries. After that, however, the new Mn multivalent change redox reaction was no longer observed. In this study, we report a neutral superhydrophilic hydrogel electrolyte that activates a Mn 2+ /Mn 7+ conversion reaction (Mn 2+ ↔MnO 4 − ). This advance is attributed to an expanding electrochemical stability window and high Mn 2+ reaction activity. This enables a discharge plateau of ≥2.2 V in aqueous Zn metal batteries. The high reversibility of Mn 2+ /Mn 7+ conversion reactions during cycling was achieved by incorporating chelation groups in the designed hydrogel electrolyte, which effectively stabilizes the MnO 4 − . The aqueous Zn||Mn-Comp battery with a 2.2-V discharge plateau operates stably for ≥360 hours.

Insights into the microstructural regulation and electrochemical performance of Ge/V dual-doped garnet-type solid electrolytes

Hong Huang,Ding-Rong Deng,Jin-Wei Yan,Shuang-Lin Cai,Yong-Qi Ye,Wen-Qi Lv,Chu-Tao Wang,Ye Zeng,Gui-Fang Li,Ming-Ming Tao,Xiao-Hong Fan,Qi-Hui Wu

Ge doping stabilizes the cubic phase, enhances ionic conductivity and improves the sintering activity of garnet LLZO. • Further V co-doping introduces high-valence V ions to tune Li vacancy concentration and create ample Li + migration channels. • Co-doping optimizes interfacial Li + distribution and inhibits insulating Li 2 CO 3 formation. • Smaller Ge 4+ and V 5+ substitute Zr sites to widen Li + migration channels. Garnet-type solid electrolyte lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 , LLZO) has attracted extensive research attention owing to the high ionic conductivity of its cubic phase. However, cubic-phase LLZO readily transforms into tetragonal-phase LLZO at room temperature, which degrades its ionic conductivity. In addition, conventional cation doping strategies frequently yield poor densification as a result of inferior sintering activity. In this work, Ge/V bimetallic co-doped LLZO solid electrolytes are synthesized via the conventional solid-state sintering method, and the effects of Ge/V co-doping on the cubic phase stability and ion transport properties of LLZO are systematically investigated. Material characterization results reveal that Ge/V co-doping distorts the lattice and generates lithium vacancies, which collectively stabilize the cubic crystal phase and optimize the Li + migration bottlenecks. Meanwhile, Ge/V co-doping improves the sintering activity and enhances the surface densification of LLZO. The LLZO-GV electrolyte delivers an ionic conductivity of 3.61 × 10 −4  S·cm −1 at room-temperature with a lithium-ion transference number of 0.54, with an electrochemical stability window up to 5.33 V. Electrochemical characterizations of the assembled LFP/LLZO-GV/Li full cell reveal that it delivers a specific capacity of 161.39 mAh g −1 at 25 °C and 0.2C, and retains a capacity retention of 96.6% after 100 cycles at 25 °C and 0.1C. Moreover, the Li//Li symmetric cell can stably cycle for 600 h at a current density of 0.3 mA cm −2 and exhibits superior rate capability under various current densities. This bimetallic co-doping strategy provides an effective route to develop high-performance all-solid-state lithium batteries.
