Preparation and Properties of PVA/ZIF-8 Sustained-Release Fiber Loaded With Minoxidil Sulfate

Haowei Bai,Yingbo Chen,DengChang Zhu,Yongxiang Shi

To address the limitation of traditional minoxidil sulfate (MXS) nano-drug delivery systems—namely, short dosing cycles, frequent replacement requirements, and inability to fulfill cosmetic coverage needs simultaneously—this study aims to develop a composite fiber with dual functions: sustained release and cosmetic coverage. Employing a green and simple wet spinning technique, MXS-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles were functionally composite with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer matrix, successfully yielding PVA/ZIF-8 composite fibers. The resulting composite fiber exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with a tensile strength reaching 2.5 cN/dtex and good aging resistance. The fiber inherits the high drug-loading capacity of ZIF-8 nanoparticles, achieving sustained release for up to 220 h. Additionally, the composite fiber possesses outstanding processability, enabling its further weaving into wigs. This study successfully developed a novel PVA/ZIF-8 composite fiber integrating sustained drug release with physical hair coverage. It expands new application directions for functional polymer composites in the biomedical field.

Preparation and Characterization of Optical PMMA/ZIF-8 Composite Films for Potential Gas Sensing

Jianhang Hai,Shuli Wei,Tianlong Zhou,Jin Wang

Polymer/metal–organic framework (MOF) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), where MOF materials are doped into a polymer matrix, have great potential in gas separation, electronic devices, sensing, and other fields. To extend the application of polymer/MOF MMMs as optical films for sensing, an in-depth investigation of their optical properties is necessary. In this work, PMMA/ZIF-8 composite films are prepared via in-situ polymerization or one-pot synthesis, with varied ZIF-8 loading amounts. The structure, morphology, gas adsorption capacity, thermal stability, and optical properties of these composite films are characterized. The results showed that the ZIF-8 crystals can be uniformly dispersed in these composite films. Nitrogen adsorption measurement also confirms this uniform dispersion, where the adsorption capacity of the composite films increases with increasing ZIF-8 loading amount. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis proves that the introduction of ZIF-8 considerably enhances the thermal stability of the composite films. Further, the measurement results show that the refractive index of the composite films increases with increasing ZIF-8 loading amount at the wavelengths of 632.8 and 1550 nm, while the optical loss decreases at low loading amounts and slightly increases at high loading amounts due to the scattering effect. This work provides inspiration of MMM-based optical films for gas sensing.

PEI-Functionalized Surface Coating on Carbonized ZIF-8 for Enhanced Adsorption of Methyl Orange

Zhenqiao Ma,Yuanyuan Xiong,Yiqing Deng,Peini Li,Xiandi Yang,Zhi Ye,Qiang Zhao

The contamination of water resources by high concentrations of organic dyes poses severe threats to human health, making the removal of these pollutants critical. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown promising potential in dye adsorption due to their high surface area and chemical stability. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a typical MOF, is known for its thermal stability and is frequently used in removing organic dyes. To enhance its adsorption performance, ZIF-8 is often carbonized to form porous carbon-based materials. However, carbonized ZIF-8 (CZ) often demonstrates restricted adsorption capacity and sluggish kinetics. To address these limitations, we chemically modified low-temperature carbonized ZIF-8 (CZ-550) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) using cyanuric chloride (CC) as a crosslinking agent, producing a novel composite (CZ@PEI/CC-7) featuring abundant amine-rich active sites for adsorption. This study evaluated the adsorption performance of CZ@PEI/CC-7 in removing methyl orange (MO) dye. Our findings reveal that CZ@PEI/CC-7 exhibits accelerated adsorption kinetics aligning with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while its isotherms fit the Freundlich and Temkin models, highlighting a favorable multilayer adsorption. Significantly, CZ@PEI/CC-7 achieved an adsorption capacity of 3150 mg/g for MO, compared to 1100 mg/g for unmodified CZ-550. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated excellent acid-base stability across a broad pH range (2–12), retaining structural integrity and adsorption efficiency. These findings suggest that CZ@PEI/CC-7 is a promising candidate for efficient MO removal from water.

Microfluidic-engineered ZIF-8/MXene-based nanofiber membrane towards high-efficiency oil-water separation

Xing-Guo Fu,Jia-Wei Wang,Yin Li,Guo-Xing Li,Chang Liu,Qing Li,Su Chen

The rapid industrialization has generated substantial amounts of oily wastewater, posing direct risks to human health, and ecosystems. Environmental-friendly and high-efficiency purification technology is highly desirable. Herein, we designed dual-functional polyvinylidene fluoride/polyacrylonitrile/ZIF-8-MXene (PVDF/PAN/ZIF-8-MXene) nanofiber membrane towards high-efficiency oil-water separation. Specially, ZIF-8 is continuously fabricated via microfluidics, where the channel diameter and solution flow rate could be precisely controlled to optimize the synthesis of ZIF-8 nanocrystals, overcoming drawbacks of long reaction times and broad size distribution in traditional methods. By continuously microfluidic electrospinning and spraying, PVDF/PAN/ZIF-8-MXene nanofiber membrane was fabricated, which exhibit dual functionality (hydrophilic oil-blocking and adsorption capture). The hydrophilic MXene layer forms a dense hydrated barrier, which significantly enhances water flux and mitigates membrane fouling. While ZIF-8 could capture tiny oil droplets, thereby efficiently improving oil-water separation efficiency. As expected, the composite membrane demonstrates excellent separation flux (6783∼9634 L m −2  h −1 ), superior separation efficiency (>99.5%) and outstanding recyclability in diverse oil-in-water emulsions. This work provides an efficient membrane for oil-water system purification, which gives a new insight into design of high-performance separation materials.

Ammonia-mediated fabrication for ZIF-8 membranes: modulation, characterization and H2/CO2 separation performance

Zhe Zhang,Chi Zhang,Qiaochu Zhou,Yiyang Wang,Fang Li,Qiming Li

A continuous and dense ZIF-8 membrane was successfully synthesized on α-Al 2 O 3 supports via a combined approach of ammonia modulation and solvothermal synthesis. A unique synergistic promoting effect between ammonia solution and ZnO nanoarrays was identified through comparative investigation of ammonia and ethylenediamine as alkaline additives. The as-prepared membranes were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Experimental results demonstrated that ammonia facilitates rapid conversion of the ZnO interlayer, shortens crystallization time, and mitigates intracrystalline defects, while an appropriate increase in 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) concentration enhances ZIF-8 crystal growth and crystallization—collectively ensuring membrane continuity and denseness. Gas separation performance tests indicated that when the 2-MIM concentration was 0.05 mol·L −1 with ammonia addition, the ZIF-8 membrane exhibited a substantially high H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 15.04, exceeding the corresponding Knudsen diffusion selectivity. This study effectively enhances the structural integrity and separation performance of ZIF-8 membranes.

A quercetin/copper-doped ZIF-8 nanoparticle-integrated polysaccharide hydrogel for infected diabetic wounds

Qiuqiu Mu,Xiaobin Yang,Lin Lin,Lizhi Wang,Zhixiang Mu,Jingjing Liu

Chronic hyperglycemia-associated wounds pose major therapeutic challenges because microbial colonization, sustained inflammation, and severe oxidative injury act in concert to impede timely tissue regeneration. Targeting these combined challenges, the present work created an advanced multifunctional wound dressing, designated ADZ1, designed for the combined therapy of diabetic wounds. This system was assembled through Schiff base conjugation of aminated alginate and oxidized pullulan, followed by integration of copper-doped ZIF-8 nanostructures loaded with quercetin (ZIF-8@QC). The resulting architecture demonstrates an intelligent, self-mending, injectable porous matrix. Within an infected wound’s acidic milieu, degradation of the hydrogel occurs responsively, liberating ZIF-8@QC nanocargos. These nanoparticles catalyze available H 2 O 2 to produce considerable reactive oxygen species, enabling powerful initial antimicrobial action. Afterwards, prolonged quercetin release delivers sustained antioxidative and anti-inflammatory benefits. In vivo assessment employing a type‑1 diabetic rat model bearing Staphylococcus aureus -infected wounds revealed that ADZ1 markedly hastened wound closure (exhibiting merely 23.1% remaining wound area at day 14). In summary, by intelligently orchestrating staged bacteria-suppressing, antioxidative, inflammation-mitigating, and pro‑angiogenic activities, the ADZ1 platform demonstrates significant potential for a holistic therapeutic regimen addressing diabetic wounds.

Moderately Hydrophilic Gigaporous Polystyrene@ZIF-8 Composite Microspheres for Synergy-Enhanced Removal of Bilirubin

Jing Li,Jing-Han Wu,Xue-Mei An,Yue Wu,Guan-Sheng Huan,Fu-Chai Li,Jian-Bo Qu

Abstract Commercial hemoperfusion adsorbents for hyperbilirubinemia are mainly polystyrene (PS) anion exchange resins due to their high mechanical strength, satisfactory physicochemical stability, and low cost, enabling bilirubin removal via electrostatic interactions. However, these resins pose two major issues in clinical use: heparin binding and coagulation activation. In this work, we developed moderately hydrophilic gigaporous polystyrene (mHGPS) microspheres with a surface that balances hemocompatibility and hydrophobic bilirubin adsorption, and then immobilized ZIF-8 in situ to obtain mHGPS@ZIF-8 composite microspheres for synergy-enhanced selective bilirubin adsorption. The composite microspheres were featured with through-connected gigapores (∼1.05 μm), high porosity (64.02%), high permeability (7.31 × 10–11 m2) and satisfactory hemocompatibility with a hemolysis rate of 1.67%. Compared to mHGPS microspheres, the mHGPS@ZIF-8 composite microspheres exhibited a 2.6-fold increase in the adsorption capacity for bilirubin (from 53.1 mg/g to 138.9 mg/g). Notably, an even greater 3.1-fold enhancement was achieved for albumin-bound bilirubin (from 18.7 mg/g to 57.8 mg/g). Moreover, benefiting from the gigaporous structure of mHGPS microspheres, mHGPS@ZIF-8 composite microspheres exhibited rapid bilirubin removal kinetics, removing 89.0% of bilirubin within 60 min during simulated hemoperfusion, with minimal albumin loss (1.2%). This work establishes a strategy for designing high-performance bilirubin adsorbents with significant potential for treating hyperbilirubinemia.

ZIF-8@ceftazidime nanocomposite for the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa–induced urinary tract infection

Li E.,Huang Qin,Zhan Jidong

Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa are difficult to treat due to biofilm-mediated resistance and the limitations of conventional antibiotics like ceftazidime (CAZ). To address this challenge, a nanotherapeutic system, ZIF-8@CAZ, was developed by encapsulating CAZ within a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocarrier. This nanocomposite exhibited sustained drug release and significantly enhanced in vitro antibacterial efficacy against P. aeruginosa PAO1, as evidenced by a substantially lower minimum inhibitory concentration compared to free CAZ, along with potent anti-biofilm activity. In a murine model of ascending UTI, ZIF-8@CAZ treatment resulted in a dramatic reduction of bacterial burden in bladder tissues, significant attenuation of inflammation (as shown by decreased levels of IL-6 and TNF-α), and superior amelioration of tissue pathology compared to an equivalent dose of free CAZ. Furthermore, comprehensive biosafety evaluations confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of ZIF-8@CAZ, with no observed systemic toxicity. These findings demonstrate that ZIF-8@CAZ is a promising nanoplatform for the effective treatment of biofilm-associated UTIs.

Xinyue Wei,Peng Guan,Jie Fang,Jinjing Yin,Ziao Xu,Chuanrun Li,Huchuan Wang

Diabetic wound dressings require strong adhesion, painless removal and effective treatment against chronic inflammation. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel KAE@ZIF-8/Mg 2+ /PDA-NIPAM-PAM (abbreviated as KAE@ZIF-8/Mg 2+ /PNP) was prepared by copolymerizing dopamine, N-isopropylacrylamide, and acrylamide with kaempferol-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles. The hydrogel integrates thermosensitive gelation and bioadhesion delivery to treat diabetic wounds. It forms gel within 1 min at 37°C with reliable tissue adhesion, while adhesion drops sharply after 20 min immersion at 10°C for trauma-free detachment. This hydrogel achieves pH-responsive drug release, with 24 h cumulative KAE release rates of 49.8 ± 1.33% at pH 5.3 and 18.1 ± 0.82% at pH 7.4. It possesses excellent hemostatic, pro-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits a compressive modulus of 89.98 kPa and favorable cytocompatibility, maintaining over 90% viability of NIH/3T3 fibroblasts.

Stable Core–Shell ZIF-8@TPPa Hybrids: Synthesis and Enhanced Herbicide Removal from Water

Zeyuan Li,Zhenzhen Liu,Xiangping Lin,Mengyuan Ge,Nannan Wu,Xinquan Wang,Yuteng Zhou,Shuchun Wu,Wei Ding,Peipei Qi

The excessive use of herbicides in agricultural fields has emerged as a critical environmental concern. This study innovatively synthesized a ZIF-8@TPPa composite through a solvothermal method for the efficient removal of herbicides from aqueous environment. The material exhibited remarkable adsorption capacities for butachlor (232.56 mg/g), anilofos (188.68 mg/g), and pendimethalin (285.71 mg/g), along with excellent acid–base stability (pH 3–9), strong anti-ion interference capability, and good reusability (adsorption efficiency >80% after five cycles). The adsorption processes were well-described by the two isotherm models and the pseudo-second-order model, indicating that the dominant mechanism is a synergistic effect between monolayer chemical adsorption and multilayer physical adsorption, primarily driven by π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and coordination. The material maintained outstanding adsorption efficiency (>85%) in real water samples (tap water, seawater, and river water). This study not only provides a sustainable and effective strategy for herbicide remediation from aqueous environment but also expands the practical applications of MOF@COF in aqueous environment.

Rice Bran–Derived Bacterial Cellulose Films Fortified With ZIF-8 for Multifunctional Food Packaging

Xia Feng,Yongyuan Liang,Bohao Deng,Chong Zhang,Luyao Bian

The development of sustainable and economical active food packaging remains a critical challenge for enhancing food quality and safety. This study presents an innovative strategy by utilising rice bran, an abundant agricultural waste product, to synthesise rice bran–derived bacterial cellulose (RBC) as a high-value matrix for active food packaging. This matrix was reinforced with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to fabricate multifunctional nanocomposite films. Structural analyses confirmed the successful integration of ZIF-8 into the RBC matrix via hydrogen bonding without disrupting its inherent crystalline lattice. The incorporation of ZIF-8 significantly improved the physical and functional characteristics of the packaging. Specifically, the optimal formulation (0.2% ZIF-8) enhanced tensile strength to 42.72 MPa and improved barrier properties against water vapour and oxygen. Notably, the film loaded with 0.1% ZIF-8 exhibited remarkable antibacterial efficacy, achieving a 99.41% inhibition rate against Escherichia coli . During chilled pork preservation trials, the nanocomposite films effectively suppressed microbial proliferation, delayed lipid oxidation and minimised the accumulation of volatile spoilage compounds. These synergistic effects successfully extended the shelf life of the pork by 6 days, demonstrating the film's superior capacity to extend food shelf life and ensure microbiological safety. This work highlights the promising potential of valorising RBC as a sustainable and highly efficient platform for advanced active food packaging.

Study on the preparation and performance of functional cotton fabrics based on ZIF-8

Zheng Mengjie,Guo Qingfeng,Yue Yizhi,Lu Chaoyang,Ran Jianhua,Bi Shuguang

A multifunctional cotton fabric was fabricated by in-situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on a polydopamine (PDA)-modified cotton substrate. Leveraging the reducing capability of PDA, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were simultaneously incorporated into and around the ZIF-8 nanocrystals. The successful fabrication of the Ag/ZIF-8 functional cotton fabric was confirmed by characterization techniques including SEM, XRD, XPS, and TG. The modified fabric exhibits exceptional photocatalytic performance and cycling stability, achieving 93.4% degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation within 170 min and retaining 90.2% efficiency after three degradation cycles. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between Ag and ZIF-8 endows the fabric with significant antibacterial activity and efficient heavy metal ion adsorption capacity. Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy for designing multifunctional materials, holding significant promise for advancing the development of multifunctional textiles.
