Based on the concept of dynamic membrane and photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR), the dynamic photocatalytic membrane reactor is developed via deposition of ZnIn 2 S 4 suspension on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. Operating with effluent circulating to the photocatalytic membrane reactor, the highest total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency of 57% is obtained after 3 h reaction with 1.88 mg cm −2 photocatalyst under the flux of 84.06 L m −2 h −1 and light intensity of 50 mW cm −2 . Operating with continuous influent and effluent mode under the flux of 26.09 L m −2 h −1 and light intensity of 50 mW cm −2 , an average of 50% removal efficiency can be maintained during the 24 h photocatalytic reaction with photocatalyst loading of 1.88 mg cm −2 when the initial concentration of tetracycline is 10 mg L −1 . Under the same operating conditions, more than 92% removal efficiency can be maintained during 36 h photocatalytic reaction when lower initial concentration of 100 μg L −1 is applied. After this reaction, the characterizations show that the surface and structure of PVDF basement membrane are not affected.

Due to the high biological toxicity and the propensity to induce antibiotic resistance, the treatment of antibiotic wastewater has consistently posed a formidable challenge. The semiconductor photocatalysts can efficiently and completely remove antibiotics from the wastewater to repair the water environment. Therefore, a novel ZnIn 2 S 4 /Tb-g-C 3 N 4 (ZIS/TCN) photocatalyst was successfully synthesized in this paper and its ability to efficiently degrade antibiotics has been verified. The optimized 150ZIS/TCN photocatalyst showed excellent photocatalytic performance and stablility toward the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and tylosin (TYL) under sunlight simulated with a xenon lamp. Compared with pristine g-C 3 N 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , the 150ZIS/TCN exhibited superior degradation performance for TC (TYL),about 3.2 (2.1) and 1.8 (1.5) times higher than them. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterization test results, it was confirmed that the Tb doping effectively regulates the intrinsic electric field and visible light absorption capacity. This study unveils the degradation mechanism of ZIS/TCN photocatalysis and provides an effective pathway for enhancing photocatalytic degradation through rare earth doping.

Carrier separation efficiency significantly impacts the photocatalyst performance for wastewater purification. However, there is no established theory to accurately guide carrier separation efficiency regulation. This study used machine learning to screen dopants to change the band gap of ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZIS), thus precisely regulating the ZIS carrier separation efficiency. Nitrogen with 0.5 % of doping amount showed the best regulation effect. Metronidazole degradation kinetic rate with nitrogen doped ZIS (N/ZIS) was 1.47 times higher than that with ZIS. Real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) was employed to assess carrier separation at the orbital level. Experiments and rt-TDDFT confirmed that N/ZIS possessed better carrier separation efficiency than that of ZIS. An “in-situ” potential research strategy was established to determine carrier acceptors, which can compare the orbital potential of molecules and catalysts in the adsorption state. This approach revealed that O 2 served as the photogenerated electron acceptor, while OH – functioned as the hole acceptor. H 2 O was not actively involved in carrier separation. O 2 anti-bonding orbital activation effect by the catalysts was studied to unveil the influence mechanism of carrier separation efficiency on the photocatalyst activity. This study provides a new insight into carrier dynamics to design efficient photocatalysts.

A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was developed for the ultra-sensitive and highly selective detection of hydroquinone (HQ), featuring a composite structure that combines 0D CdS nanoparticles with a 3D flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 microsphere . The sensor, termed rMIP/CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 , employed molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to achieve specific recognition of HQ. An p-phenylenediamine (pPD) polymer film was electrochemically polymerized onto the surface of the CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 composite-coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). Through hydrogen bonding, HQ molecules were imprinted onto the polymer film. Subsequent elution removed these molecules, leaving behind specific recognition sites, enabling selective detection of HQ. The unique spatial structure and heterojunction properties of the 0D CdS nanoparticle/3D flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 composite, combined with molecular imprinting, significantly enhanced the photocurrent response and increased the selectivity and sensitivity for HQ detection. Under optimal conditions, the rMIP/CdS/ZnIn 2 S 4 sensor demonstrated a low detection limit (0.7 nmol·L −1 , S/N=3) over a wide linear range of 1–1200 nmol·L −1 . The sensor was successfully applied to detect HQ in real water samples, showing promise for environmental pollution control applications.

Carcinogen Cr(VI) is reduced efficiently into Cr(III) by a photocatalyst, but the produced Cr(III) is difficult to transfer from the photocatalytic active site. The “two birds with one stone” strategy is proposed to realize the in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 nanoplates on SBA-15 and the creation of separated active sites, in which ZnO loading on the porous SBA-15 nanorod was used as a zinc source. Obtained samples ZnIn2S4/SBA-15 (ZIS/SBA) showed the redshift of the absorption band and better separation of photoinduced carriers than pristine ZnIn2S4, due to its smaller size and S defect. All of the Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) by the ZIS/SBA sample during the photocatalytic process, which was 2 times higher than pristine ZnIn2S4. Moreover, 92.8% of Cr(III) was adsorbed simultaneously during photocatalysis due to the electrostatic interaction from SBA-15. In addition, the ZIS/SBA sample showed good recycling stability after 5 times cycles, providing a new strategy for the in situ growth of ZnIn2S4 on the surface of porous materials and a novel way for the simultaneous removal of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) during photocatalysis.

The development of rapid and sensitive CA19–9 (carbohydrate antigen 19–9) analytical methods for early screening of potential patients, especially in clinical situations, is important for controlling the progression of pancreatic cancer. Herein, a new photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunoassay has been devised for the ultrasensitive detection of CA19–9 using gold nanoparticle-modified ultrathin ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets (Au-UZNS) as the photoactive substrate. Notably, the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) labeled on the detection antibody (ALP-dAb) serves as the signal amplifier that catalyzes the production of large amounts of ascorbic acid (AA) after the sandwiched immunoreaction. The generated AA is an outstanding electron donor, thereby improving the intensity of the photoactive substrate. Under the optimized parameters, the Au-UZNS-based PEC immunosensor displays an excellent response to CA19–9 ranging from 0.01 to 500 U mL −1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.7 mU mL −1 . Generally, the CA19–9 levels in the serum of high-risk pancreatic cancer patients range from 120 to 400 U mL −1 , while the levels in normal humans range from 0 to 40 U mL −1 . Therefore, the exceptionally low LOD value of the proposed method is sufficient to meet the threshold for clinical detection and holds significant potential for further application.

The high-dispersed nano complex ZnO/Co 3 O 4 was first prepared by calcining the ZIF-8@ZIF-67 in Air. Then, the ternary mix-heterojunction ZnIn 2 S 4 /CdIn 2 S 4 /Co 3 O 4 (CdIn 2 S 4 /Z/C) was first in situ constructed by introducing nano complex ZnO/Co 3 O 4 into the CdIn 2 S 4 precursor solution via a solvent thermal reaction. Overall, the CdIn 2 S 4 /Z/C photocatalyst exhibits excellent performance in the photoconversion of CO 2 and H 2 O, which increased by 18.1%∼34.1% for CO, 36.8%∼73.9% for H 2 , and 21.1%∼40.6% for syngas (CO+H 2 ), respectively, compared with CdIn 2 S 4 . The CdIn 2 S 4 /Z/C-40 shows the highest H 2 -evolution rate of 1661.8 μmolg −1 h −1 , which is 87.5% higher than that of CdIn 2 S 4 (886.3 μmolg −1 h −1 ). The CdIn 2 S 4 /Z/C exhibits higher surface S-vacancy concentration, larger specific surface area, stronger light absorption, and photocurrent density than that of CdIn 2 S 4 . The band structure reveals that the ZnIn 2 S 4 /CdIn 2 S 4 /Co 3 O 4 forms a tandem internal electric field at the double heterojunction interface, which is beneficial to improve the migration of photocarrier. This work provides a feasible strategy for constructing synergistic mix-heterojunction photocatalyst for photoconversion of CO 2 and H 2 O.

Photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS) is an efficient technology that converts solar energy into H 2 energy, holding significant importance in the realms of energy and the environment. As a visible-light photocatalyst, ZnIn 2 S 4 , despite being an ideal low-dimensional semiconductor for photocatalytic overall water splitting, has its performance therein affected by poor charge separation. The present study reports the successful synthesis of a novel Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl/ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo Z-scheme heterojunction via a hydrothermal method. Under AM 1.5G irradiation, the POWS H 2 evolution rate was measured at 84.8 μmol g −1 h −1 , while the O 2 evolution rate was determined to be 47.0 μmol g −1 h −1 . Under simulated solar light irradiation, Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl/ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo heterojunction exhibits an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 0.22 % at 420 ± 20 nm and a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 0.026 %. UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopic analysis unequivocally demonstrated a significant enhancement in the utilization efficiency of the Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl/ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo Z-scheme heterojunction in the near-infrared light region compared to the pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 and Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl. This improvement extends the spectral absorption boundary of the photocatalyst, allowing efficient capture of a considerable proportion of low-energy photons in sunlight. Unique charge transfer mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunction was revealed by in-situ XPS and EPR tests. Z-scheme heterojunction effectively promoted the respective enrichment of electrons and holes generated by photo-excitation in ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo and Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl, thereby improving the performance of POWS. This study not only establishes an experimental foundation for the design and construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions but also explores a new approach to augment the utilization efficiency of the near-infrared solar spectrum.

Amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) is considered a promising biomarker for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Herein, we developed an anti-fouling photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor for sensitive Aβ40 detection based on Z-scheme heterojunction poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/ZnIn 2 S 4 and zwitterionic peptide. Due to the excellent electrical conductivity of PEDOT, the Z-scheme PEDOT/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction exhibited a high photocurrent response, which can promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron/hole pairs. The zwitterionic peptide with hydrophilicity and electrical neutrality was used as a blocking agent to reduce nonspecific adsorption. The proposed PEC immunosensor showed outstanding performance for Aβ40 with high selectivity, stability, wide liner range (from 10 pg mL −1 to 5 ng mL −1 ), and a low detection limit (4.7 pg mL −1 ). Moreover, the integration strategy of heterojunction with zwitterionic peptide provides a promising way for protein detection in practical applications.

Developing an efficient visible-light-responsive catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for addressing energy scarcity and environmental pollution. In this study, one-dimensional Co3O4 (CO) nanoparticles were synthesized via electrospinning and subsequently sulfurized using a low-temperature solvothermal method. These sulfurized one-dimensional CO nanoparticles were then combined with two-dimensional sheet-like ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) to form a p–n heterojunction composite semiconductor photocatalyst (SCO/ZIS). The one-dimensional CO nanoparticles obtained through electrospinning significantly enhance the catalytic activity and efficiency, while sulfurization further improves their electronic structure and surface properties. The built-in electric field at the p–n heterojunction interface between n-type ZIS and p-type SCO effectively inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs while facilitating electron transfer. Additionally, the incorporation of one-dimensional SCO into sheet-like ZIS prevents ZIS stacking, improving sunlight utilization and substantially enhancing photocatalytic HER performance. Our results demonstrate that SCO/ZIS achieves a superior HER rate of 4300.3 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light, which is 7.45 times higher than that of pristine ZIS, while also exhibiting excellent photocatalytic stability.

Photocatalytic pure water splitting provides a promising strategy to produce green hydrogen. ZnIn 2 S 4 , as a visible light responsive photocatalytst, has been proven to be the capable of direct pure water splitting into H 2 and H 2 O 2 . Currently, the efficiency of ZnIn 2 S 4 is severely restricted by the slow hole transport dynamics and low utilization of holes. Herein, a ternary Ni 2 CoPO x @ZnIn 2 S 4 @CoO x (NCP@ZIS@Co) photocatalyst was constructed by directly growing ZnIn 2 S 4 on the Ni 2 CoPO x nanosheet and subsequently decorating ultra-small CoO x cluster on the surface of ZnIn 2 S 4 . Experimental characterizations reveal that dual hole transfer channels are established by designing the spatial separation of Ni 2 CoPO x and CoO x , which can efficiently extract holes from ZnIn 2 S 4 , thus improving the charge separation. Moreover, the lifetime of trapped holes is significantly prolonged from 804.1 ps to 2146.2 ps, which enable more photogenerated holes to participate in the photocatalytic reactions. As a result, the optimal NCP@ZIS@Co shows an excellent H 2 and H 2 O 2 evolution rates of 1541.2 μmol g −1 h −1 and 1381.1 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation, respectively, with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.62 % at 400 nm. This work provides a useful way to manipulate the photogenerated holes dynamic for improving photocatalytic performance.

Photoinduced cathodic protection (PICP) technology exhibits substantial research significance in the field of corrosion science. This work designed and fabricated a nanocomposite-structured photoelectrode (Ti-MIS/ZIS) composed of an In₂S₃/MgIn₂S₄ composite (MIS) and ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS) on an etched titanium sheet via a two-step hydrothermal method. The Ti-MIS/ZIS photoelectrode exhibits a significantly broadened visible-light absorption range as well as rational band alignment. The uniform anchoring of ZIS nanosheets on the Ti-MIS surface constructs a gradient band structure, and the resultant built-in electric field drives the migration of photogenerated electrons toward the conduction band of Ti-MIS, thus enabling efficient carrier separation. The rational band structure of Ti-MIS/ZIS enables abundant generation and directional migration of photogenerated electrons to the 316 L SS surface, thus realizing effective PICP. Under AM 1.5 G illumination, the Ti-MIS/ZIS photoelectrode coupled with 316 L SS achieves a photoinduced current density of 40 μA·cm⁻² and a negative shift of open-circuit potential to −0.47 V, exhibiting remarkably superior PICP performance to other photoelectrodes.Via band engineering design, this work achieves precise directional regulation of photogenerated carrier dynamics, laying a direct theoretical foundation for the development of high-efficiency heterojunction photoelectrode systems. Moreover, the revealed interfacial charge transfer mechanism exhibits universal guiding significance for heterojunction systems.
