A ratiometric probe is described for the fluorometric determination of Cu(II) ions based on their quenching effect on the luminescence of dually-emitting quantum dots (QDs). ZnS QDs were doped with Mn(II) and subsequently modified with mercaptopropionic acid to give the QD probe which consists of a sole fluorophore but has two emission peaks (at 430 and 590 nm under 310 nm excitation, respectively). On addition of Cu(II) ions, the 590 nm band is quenched while the 430 nm band exhibits a little change. The changes in the intensity ratios of the yellow and the purple bands increases linearly in the 0 to 3.0 μM Cu(II) concentration range, and the detection limit reached 14 nM. The QD probe was validated and successfully applied to the determination of Cu(II) in spiked real water samples.
Mn-doped ZnS (ZnS:Mn(II)) quantum dots were synthesized with yellow fluorescence. After the modification of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), ZnS:Mn(II) was transferred to aqueous phase and became MPA modified Mn-doped ZnS (MPA- ZnS:Mn(II)). The fluorescence was changed to purple upon the addition of copper ions because the yellow band was largely quenched while the purple band only changed a little.

Biosensors based on excellent optical properties of quantum dots (QDs) nanohybrids are efficient for biological detection. In this work, a room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) PDAD–Mn–ZnS QDs biosensor was constructed with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAD) as the modifier of MPA-capped Mn–ZnS QDs, and used to detect hyaluronic acid (HA). The newly-added HA induced severe electrostatic interaction with PDAD–Mn–ZnS QDs, leading to the aggregation between PDAD–Mn–ZnS QDs and HA and thereby enhancing RTP. The enhancement of RTP was proportional to the HA concentrations within certain ranges. On this basis, a high-performance HA sensor was built and this sensor had a detection limit of 0.03 μg mL−1 and a detection range of 0.08–2.8 μg mL−1. This proposed RTP sensor can avoid interferences from the background fluorescence or scattering light of the matrix that are encountered in spectrofluorometry. Thus, this biosensor is potentially suitable for detection of HA in real samples without complicated pretreatment.

Solar-driven photocatalytic CO 2 reduction coupled with the oxidation of organic compounds to value-added chemicals is a promising strategy, which can utilize both photogenerated electrons and holes. Here, a gradient alloyed CdS@Zn x Cd 1-x S@ZnS quantum dots (quasi-Type II band structure) capped with Cl − ligands demonstrate great potential in the simultaneous conversion of CO 2 and 1-phenylethanol into syngas and pinacol. The passivation with Cl − maximizes the exposure of surface-active sites and improves their electronic structure, providing a prerequisite for the efficient execution of redox reactions. More importantly, the p–π conjugation between chloride-ion ligands and the benzene ring provides a bridge for the ultrafast transfer of holes, which greatly promotes the activation of the Cα─H bond in 1-phenylethanol to release a mass of reactive free hydrogen. This process effectively lowers the thermodynamic energy barrier for CO 2 reduction, even as the excessively high kinetic energy barriers arising from the accumulation of excess protons also enable them to self-couple, leading to the generation of syngas (CO ≈ 75 mmol g −1 h −1 ; selectivity ≈ 69.86%). This work provides insights for future artificial photosynthesis to achieve high activity and cost-effective conversion of CO 2 into storable renewable resources and the co-production of value-added substances through synergistic organic oxidation.

The world energy crisis is a significant challenge we facing today. To alleviate this problem, the idea of the further development and utilization of solar energy has been proposed. The application of solar energy could not only reduce human’s dependence on traditional fossil fuels but also mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Photothermal materials, which can directly convert light into heat, are of great practical importance in the field of desalination and solar thermoelectric generators. Consequently, it is of great significance to develop novel photothermal material which can efficiently absorb solar radiation of wide spectrum and convert it into heat energy. Inspired by the light-sensitive structure of sea urchins, in this work we propose the preparation of a novel photothermal material Re/ReS 2 /ZnS/NDC with layered heterostructure. This material exhibits outstanding wide-band absorption capability and achieves a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 82.33 %. Under 1 Sun irradiation, Re/ReS 2 /ZnS/NDC/PVA could achieve the water evaporation rate of 3.15 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and the power density of 2.40 W·m −2 in the photothermal evaporation and photothermal-electric conversion experiments. This work provides a biomimetic design approach for synthesizing novel and efficient photothermal materials.

The development of high-performance and cost-efficient catalysts holds great significance in facilitating oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is a pivotal process in next-generation energy storage devices, such as aluminum–air batteries. Transition metal sulfides have been proposed as promising non-noble metal ORR catalysts. However, achieving platinum (Pt)-comparable activity remains a challenge. Herein, a Co-doping-triggered electronic reconfiguration strategy is reported to tune the charge distribution and coordination state of ZnS nanoparticles anchored on N, S co-doped carbon (ZnS/NSC), thereby optimizing the intermediate adsorption kinetics and promoting ORR activity. The half-wave potential of 0.87 V as well as 100-h continuous durability are obtained by Co-doped ZnS/NSC in alkaline media. In addition, the solid-state aluminum–air battery is further assembled by using Co-doped ZnS/NSC as a cathode catalyst, achieving a maximum peak density of 100 mW·cm −2 and discharge duration over 55 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that high electronegative Co-doping is beneficial for the construct of charge-transfer avenue and optimization of intermediate adsorption procedure. This study presents an efficient approach for preparing metal sulfides with high catalytic activity toward ORR in flexible metal–air batteries. Graphical abstract

ZnS@g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst containing g-C 3 N 4 nanoplates and ZnS nanoparticles was facilely fabricated by one-step calcination from the complex sulfatotris(thiourea)zinc(II) for the first time. Thiourea serves not only as the sulfur source of ZnS, but also as the precursor of g-C 3 N 4 . The as-prepared composite photocatalyst was then characterized using Fourier transform infrared, diffuse reflectance and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurements. It displays a higher visible-light photocatalytic activity, including an ability to photodecompose water to produce hydrogen and organic dye photodegradation, than ZnS alone. The photocatalytic mechanism is also discussed in detail. Photoluminescence spectra and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy Nyquist plots indicate that the formation of the ZnS@g-C 3 N 4 composite contributes to the separation of photoinduced charge carriers which enhances its photocatalytic activity. This study presents a new method for the fabrication of novel sulfide/g-C 3 N 4 composites with enhanced photocatalytic performance. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A novel fluorescence probe based on the quenching of fluorescence of bovine serum albumin (BSA) capped ZnS nanoparticles (NPs) has been developed for the determination of gatifloxacin in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage form. The functionalized ZnS NPs were successfully synthesized in aqueous medium, with the biomolecule BSA as the capping ligand. Due to a specific interaction, the fluorescence intensity of ZnS NPs reduces obviously in the presence of gatifloxacin. Under the optimal conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity of ZnS NPs is linearly proportional to gatifloxacin concentration from 2.0 × 10 −7 M to 1.0 × 10 −4 M with a detection limit of 6.5 × 10 −8 M. The proposed method is simple, rapid, practical and can be successfully applied to assay gatifloxacin capsules.

This paper reports the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior of CdSe/ZnS with K2S2O8 as the coreactant. The effects of pH, K2S2O8 concentration, the duration of the reaction of 4-ATP with GCE and the duration of the reaction of 4-ATP/GCE with QDs on ECL intensity were studied in detail. A possible ECL reaction mechanism was then proposed. In addition, it was observed that the ECL intensity was efficiently quenched by trace amounts of heavy metal ion. Based on the quenching effect of Pb2+ upon the ECL of CdSe/ZnS QDs, a QDs-ECL sensor was constructed to detect Pb2+ in preserved duck egg. The sensor showed good reproducibility and stability.

In this work, water-soluble ZnS:Ni/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with core/shell structure were obtained successfully using mercaptoacetic acid as dressing agent, which were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A highly sensitive and stable electrochemical sensor was developed by immobilizing L-cysteine and ZnS:Ni/ZnS QDs on the surface of glassy carbon electrode. The sensor showed excellent catalytic activity to catechol (CC). Experimental results showed that the oxidation peak current of CC was linear over the range from 0.5 to 100 μM, and the detection limit (S/N = 3) for CC was 32 nM. The developed sensor was successfully used for determination of CC in lake water samples with satisfactory recoveries.

High sensitivity and rapid response are important for environment monitoring of gas sensors. Herein, we introduced polyoxometalates (POMs) as electron acceptors into a low-resistance sulfide gas sensitive material, ZnS, for the first time, and prepared a group of heater-type gas sensors by using ZnS/PW 12 composite microspheres. The sensor performances to NO 2 gas were comprehensively explored. The optimized ZnS/1 %PW 12 composite sensor exhibited an ultrahigh response of 358.1 to 50 ppm NO 2 gas, which is 4.86 times greater than that of pure ZnS sensor, and higher than performances of most reported ZnS-based NO 2 sensors in literatures. Simultaneously, the ZnS/1 %PW 12 composite sensor also exhibited accelerated response and recovery time of only 82 and 30 s, respectively, much faster than pure ZnS sensor (147 and 72 s). The reason for the improvement of the sensing performance was explored via mechanism study, and it was found that the introduction of PW 12 into ZnS sensor contributed to its enhanced performance. PW 12 , as an electron acceptor, increased carrier mobility and reduced electron-hole recombination, and thus enhanced gas sensing properties. Moreover, other gas sensing parameters such as selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability were investigated. Hence, this study contributed to the literature on the development of polyoxometalates-based gas sensors.

The introduction of metal complex units makes it possible to expand the functional applications of metal hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (M-HOFs). An M-HOFs-templated strategy was developed to construct ultra-fine ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction with high-porosity for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. Due to the weak and feasible hydrogen-bonding interactions, the nonmetallic units on HOFs can be quickly replaced by S 2− in aqueous solution and derived into porous sulfides without pyrolysis process. Surprisingly, the surface area of ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction was up to 320 m 2 g −1 . The ultra-fine heterojunction with high porosity offered more surface reaction sites and shortened carrier transport distance, improving separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. The size and structure-dependent properties of ZnCdS/ZnS heterojunction exhibited excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate, which was 1.68 mmol h −1 without cocatalyst. This study provides a novel strategy for constructing ultra-fine heterojunction with high porosity and high surface area to achieve efficient H 2 evolution.

The agriculture and environmental industries have employed organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) chemicals as insecticides extensively in previous decades, leading to persistent life-threatening issues. Therefore, developing a platform for the efficient identification of OPs is significant for environmental protection and human health. In this study, a strategy for the colorimetric and fluorescence detection of OPs by combining quantum dots (QDs) with DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) was proposed. Technically, the fluorescence of DNA-AgNCs will be enhanced once guanine (G)-rich sequences get close to the DNA-AgNCs to form hybrid complexes DNA-AgNCs/G, while quenching of fluorescence can be attributed to the hydrolysate (thiocholine) of acetylthiocholine (ATch) that was caused by acetylcholinesterase (AchE). Based on the fact that OPs can irreversibly inhibit the catalytic activity of AchE and slow down the fluorescence quenching of DNA-AgNCs/G, thus, OPs detection can be achieved by evaluating the fluorescence intensity of DNA-AgNCs/G. Additionally, a dual-mode detection system (colorimetric and fluorescent) is achieved through an ion-exchange reaction between QDs and DNA-AgNCs/G. The concentration of OPs is quantified by monitoring fluorescence changes in the QDs and poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) polymer dots (Pdots) system, with PFO Pdots serving as a stable internal reference. Using trichlorfon as a model, the limit of detection (LOD) was 2.55 pg/mL, while an excellent linear relationship with the trichlorfon concentrations in the range of 5 × 100–5 × 105 pg/mL was obtained. Additionally, visual detection (as low as 1.06 pg/mL) can be realized readily, taking advantage of the ion-exchange reaction between DNA-AgNCs and QDs.
