Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa easily obtains multidrug resistance and forms biofilm. These properties bring more challenges to its control. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can inhibit the formation of biofilms. However the nature AMPs have many adverse factors which prevent its extensive application. Sacakin P has 43 amino acids and belongs to the IIa bacteriocins. In this study, the amino acid sequence with an α-helical structure at positions 18–33 of sakacin P was intercepted, and three AMPs were obtained by substituting amino acids at different positions with arginine (R) and lysine (K). The modified AMPs had good antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa , and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 2–8 µg/mL. P. aeruginosa biofilm formation was associated with nutrients and other environmental factors. Low pH and high NaCl and glucose concentrations effectively inhibited biofilm formation. Disinfectants such as 84 disinfectant, alcohol, and detergent did not effectively eliminate P. aeruginosa biofilms. Sakacin P16-R8 almost completely inhibited P. aeruginosa biofilm formation at 4 MIC and removed approximately 50% of a formed biofilm. The three AMPs were less toxic to eukaryotic cells, and the cell viability was >60% at 128 µg/mL of an AMP. The extracellular nucleic acid and protein content in the supernatant after treating P. aeruginosa with sakacin P16-R8 significantly increased with incubation time and peptide concentration. Flow cytometry showed that P. aeruginosa treated with 1 MIC and 2 MIC of sakacin P16-R8 showed 84.0 and 92.6% cell death, respectively. The results suggest that the modified AMPs exerted their antibacterial activity by increasing bacterial cell membrane permeability.

Recently, the p-type semiconductor AgSbTe2 has received a great deal of attention due to its promising thermoelectric performance in intermediate temperatures (300–700 K). However, its performance is limited by the suboptimal carrier concentration and the presence of Ag2Te impurities. Herein, we synthesized AgSb1–xCuxTe2 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.06) and investigated the effect of Cu doping on the thermoelectric properties of AgSbTe2. Our results indicate that Cu doping suppresses the Ag2Te impurities, raises the carrier concentration, and results in an improved power factor (PF). The calculation reveals that Cu doping downshifts the Fermi energy level, reduces the energy band gap and the difference among several valence band maximums, and thereby explains the improvement of PF. In addition, Cu doping reduces the thermal conductivity, possibly attributed to the inhibition of Ag2Te impurities and the phonon softening of the AgSb1–xCuxTe2. Overall, Cu doping improves the ZT of AgSb1–xCuxTe2. Among all samples, AgSb0.96Cu0.04Te2 has a maximum ZT of ∼1.45 at 498 K and an average ZT of ∼1.11 from 298 to 573 K.

It is an urgent challenge to develop efficient antibacterial agents against resistant bacteria in the treatment of infectious diseases. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their good stability, low toxicity and excellent biocompatibility. In this work, CQDs doped with different contents of the element phosphorus (P) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using valine as a carbon source, triethylamine as a nitrogen source and different volumes of phosphoric acid as a phosphorus source. The average diameter and the surface charge could be regulated from 2.89 nm to 1.56 nm and +2.58 mV to +5.47 mV by increasing the content of the element P in these CQDs. Importantly, these CQDs showed effective bacterial inhibition against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) decreased from 0.71, to 0.51 to 0.18 mg mL−1 on E. coli and S. aureus with the increase of P element content. Furthermore, the morphologies of E. coli cells and S. aureus were damaged and became irregular upon treatment with these CQDs. The results of singlet oxygen (1O2) detection demonstrated that intracellular 1O2 was generated during the antibacterial process. We speculated that bacterial inhibition induced by these CQDs was accompanied by disruption of permeability and structural integrity, owing to strong electrostatic interactions between negatively charged bacteria and positively charged CQDs and production of singlet oxygen of CQDs. Together, this study indicates that the CQDs can be a candidate to treat resistant bacterial infections and may improve the understanding of killing pathogens by antibacterial CQD drugs.

Utilizing tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), tetratolylporphyrin (TTP), tetramesitylporphyrin (TMP), and tetra- p -chlorophenylporphyrin (T p ClPP) as ligands, several five-coordinate high-spin p -toluenethiolate Manganese(II) complexes are isolated and studied by UV-vis, single-crystal X-ray and EPR spectroscopies. The crystal structures show noteworthy features including flexible axial p -toluenethiolate ligands and intramolecular C−H ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ π and π - π interactions between ligands and porphyrin planes. All four products are further studied by X-band EPR on both solid and solution states at 4 K which confirmed the S = 2/5 high-spin states. Temperature-dependent EPR and measurements with different equivalents of ligands are also reported for comparison. The work provides new references for the study of the active center of P450s and the biochemical reaction between cysteine residues and heme.

Ultrathin epidermal piezoelectric sensors are essential in the next generation of wearable flexible electronics due to their conformal contact with the skin. However, the fabrication and peeling of ultrathin film still face great challenges, and there is an urgent need to develop a facile and effective process. Here, we propose a method of combing spin-coating and aqueous phase exfoliating to prepare the ultrathin poly(vinylidene fluoride-ran-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) piezoelectric film with a thickness of about 3 μm. And the thermal treatment is employed to improve its crystallinity and piezoelectricity, resulting in the piezoelectric coefficient of 11.67 pC N–1 and fine sensitivity of 4.56 mV kPa–1. The ultrathin device is successfully applied to monitor the signals of arterial pulse and interactive force, which is expected to provide references for medical diagnosis and robot design. Notably, this work might motivate design principles and methods of ultrathin epidermal devices and promote its applications in wearable flexible electronics.

In this work, a variety of microporous carbon nanospheres (MCNs) were synthesized by the in-situ approach, and used as metal-free catalysts for direct propane dehydrogenation (DPDH). Pristine MCNs showed excellent catalytic performances for DPDH with initial propane conversion of 26% and propylene selectivity of 87%–88%. Phosphorus (P) modifications with different P sources put different effects on the catalytic performances of MCNs in DPDH, i.e., triethyl phosphate exhibited a positive, while (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 and H 3 PO 4 showed a negative effect on the catalytic performances for the in-situ doping carbon catalysts. The amount of surface oxygenic groups and the graphitization extent of carbon materials are two important factors influencing the catalytic performances of MCNs in DPDH. These results indicate that P modification is an effective way to adjust the catalytic performances of MCNs in DPDH. While, except the dopant itself, the interaction between the dopant and other materials during the synthesis process also influences the surface oxygenic groups and the graphitization degree of carbon materials.

While high-entropy alloys, high-entropy oxides, and high-entropy hydroxides, are advanced as a novel frontier in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution, their inherent activity deficiency poses a major challenge. To achieve the unlimited goal to tailor the structure–activity relationship in multicomponent systems, entropy-driven composition engineering presents substantial potential, by fabricating high-entropy anion-regulated transition metal compounds as sophisticated oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Herein, a versatile 2D high-entropy metal phosphorus trisulfide is developed as a promising and adjustable platform. Leveraging the multiple electron couplings and d–p orbital hybridizations induced by the cocktail effect, the exceptional oxygen evolution catalytic activity is disclosed upon van der Waals material (MnFeCoNiZn)PS 3 , exhibiting an impressively low overpotential of 240 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a minimal Tafel slope of 32 mV dec −1 , and negligible degradation under varying current densities for over 96 h. Density functional theory calculations further offer insights into the correlation between orbital hybridization and catalytic performance within high-entropy systems, underscoring the contribution of active phosphorus centers on the substrate to performance enhancements. Moreover, by achieving electron redistribution to optimize the electron coordination environment, this work presents an effective strategy for advanced catalysts in energy-related applications.

The cross-like crystallines of Ni-Co-P microcomposites were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method under high pressure and temperature which is adapted from the classical electroless deposition technique for surface modification. Here hypophosphite was employed as reductant and phosphorus resource to prepare the composites of Ni, Co and P elements. The obtain Ni-Co-P microcomposites were characterized in morphology, composition and properties. They show the perfect cross-like shape with an approximate stoichiometry of Ni 12 -Co 6 -P 12 -O 70 . The high absorbance in UV area and wide absorbance in vis area are observed. They also exhibit superparamagnetic behavior and hydrogen evolution property.

6-Phosphate aminopurine ( 6 PA), a purine analog, is usually used in clinical anticancer treatment and biochemical research. Up to now, to the best of our knowledge, no literature about the electrochemical behaviors of 6 PA has been reported. In this study, nano-p–n junction heterostructures based on TiO 2 nanobelts were produced by the assembly of p-type semiconducting NiO nanoparticles onto the n-type surface-coarsened TiO 2 nanobelts. The electrochemical behaviors of 6 PA were investigated by different voltammetric techniques in a phosphate buffer solution of pH 7.4 using the heterostructures as the sensing electrode. Compared with single-phase TiO 2 nanobelt electrodes, the resulting chemically modified electrodes exhibited higher surface accumulation ability and enhanced electrocatalytic activities in the oxidation for 6 PA, with an irreversible oxidation peak at +0.91 V. It is proposed that the nano-p–n junction heterostructures played an important role in the enhancement of charge transport in the sensing electrodes. The results suggest that the nanoengineered TiO 2 nanobelts might be a promising candidate for biosensing applications of nucleic acid drugs that will be of significance to diagnostic medicine and molecular biology research.

Sustainable cellulose has attracted considerable attention in the field of renewable supercapacitor owing to its low-cost and lightweight properties. However, it is still a challenge to enhance their electrochemical performance. Here, nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) co-doped carbon aerogels derived from cellulose were synthesized via the sol-gel-lyophilization-carbonization method. Their structures were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen sorption isotherm, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The N/P co-doped carbon aerogel exhibited significantly enhanced porous surface properties, and the increasing contents of the N and P could provide more defects and active sites. Therefore, the sample achieved a high specific capacitance of 235.5 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , while also demonstrating good retention of specific capacitance with 62.6 % of initial capacitance at 20 A g −1 . The electrode exhibited 87 % capacitance retention and an excellent coulombic efficiency of close to 100 % after undergoing 10,000 cycles at a current density of 6 A g −1 . Overall, the synthesized cellulose carbon aerogels, modified through doping engineering, have been identified as a promising candidate for supercapacitor electrodes.

The p- or n-type property of semiconductor materials directly determine the final performance of photoelectronic devices. Generally, perovskite deposited on p-type substrate tends to be p-type, while perovskite deposited on n-type substrate tends to be n-type. Motived by this, a substrate-induced re-growth strategy is reported to induce p- to n-transition of perovskite surface in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). p-type perovskite film is obtained and crystallized on p-type substrate first. Then an n-type ITO/SnO 2 substrate with saturated perovskite solution is pressed onto the perovskite film and annealed to induce the secondary re-growth of perovskite surface region. As a result, p- to n-type transition happens and induces an extra junction at perovskite surface region, thus enhancing the built-in potential and promoting carrier extraction in PSCs. Resulting inverted PSCs exhibit high efficiency of over 25% with good operational stability, retaining 90% of initial efficiency after maximum power point (MPP) tracking for 800 h at 65 °C with ISOS-L-2 protocol.

Point-of-care diagnostics for pathogen detection are crucial for informed clinical pretreatment strategies, rendering the emergence of electro-fluidic systems increasingly attractive. However, both optical and electrical sensing strategies still face challenges in achieving high sensitivity and specificity. Herein, we present a facile and general approach for effectively integrating an electro-fluidic device that enables optical-electrical dual-mode gradient analysis of bacterial populations, mediated by a 2-lactobionamidoethyl methacrylate (SLM)-functionalized chitosan film (CS). Notably, this rationally synthesized CS@SLM exhibits robust interfacial monolayer adsorption performance, serving as a versatile sensing platform for specific bacterial recognition, uniform capture, and rapid accumulation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, the biointerface demonstrates distinct concentration-dependent adsorption behavior, particularly in diluted bacterial solutions, achieving remarkably high removal efficiencies (78.3–100%) while facilitating bacterial detection at ultralow concentrations (≤101 CFU/mL, 0–10 min). These characteristics enable the creation of a pronounced concentration gradient through subsequent diffusion processes in microfluidic channels, allowing for differential analysis of bacterial populations with thousands of fold enhancement in signal variation. Importantly, the surface-immobilized bacteria retain their bioactivities and can be effectively integrated with electrodes via the engineered biointerface, highlighting significant potential for electro-fluidic multimodal sensing systems. Collectively, this general strategy and versatile biointerface provide new insights into designing advanced electro-fluidic devices for precise bacterial density control and effective infection management.
