Nine β-cyclodextrin derivatives containing an amino group were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution from mono(6- O - p -tolylsulfonyl)-β-cyclodextrin and used in asymmetric biomimetic Michael addition reactions in water at room temperature. The mechanism responsible for the moderate activity and enantioselectivity of the β-cyclodextrin derivatives was explored using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, namely 2D 1 H rotating-frame overhauser effect spectroscopy (ROESY), ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations, which provide a useful technique for investigating the formation of inclusion complexes. The effects of the pH of the reaction medium, the β-cyclodextrin derivative dosage, the structure of the modifying amino group, and various substrates on the yield and enantioselectivity were investigated. The results indicated that these factors had an important effect on the enantiomeric excess (ee) in the reaction system. Experiments using a competitor for inclusion complex formation showed that a hydrophobic cavity is necessary for enantioselective Michael addition. A comparison of the reactions using 4-nitro-β-nitrostyrene and 2-nitro-β-nitrostyrene showed that steric hindrance improved the enantioselectivity. This was verified by the optimized geometries obtained from quantum chemical calculations. An ee of 71% was obtained in the asymmetric Michael addition of cyclohexanone and 2-nitro-β-nitrostyrene, using ( S )-2-aminomethylpyrrolidine-modified β-CD as the catalyst, in an aqueous buffer solution, i.e., CH 3 COONa-HCl (pH 7.5).

A Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction was performed to synthesize 5,15- meso -bis(2-chlorothiophen-3-yl)porphyrins in order to obtain a building block for further functional porphyrins. Photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated to understand the effect of 2-chloro substituted thiophenes which are connected at their 3-position to the meso -position of the porphyrin. A computational calculation with counterpoise method was demonstrated to estimate the relative intermolecular interaction in order to compare solubility. Installed chloro atoms at the 2-position of thiophen-3-yl decreased in intermolecular interaction which caused an increase in solubility.

The sluggish Ni(II)/Ni(III) redox cycle does not benefit perxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for recalcitrant pollutant degradation . To solve this problem, a heterogeneous catalyst, Cu 0.2 Ni 0.8 O/SBA-15 (CNS), was constructed to activate PMS for decomposing two sulfonamide antibiotics, sulfachlorpyridazine (SACP) and sulfapyridine (SAP). SACP and SAP were completely degraded over Cu 0.2 Ni 0.8 O/SBA-15/PMS (CNSP) after 90 min. O 2 .- was the dominant active species involved in the degradation of SACP and SAP. Structural analysis and elemental valence state observations indicated that Cu(Ⅰ) provided electrons through Cu–O–Ni bonds to realize the charge compensation for Ni(Ⅲ) in the CNSP system. Thus, the in situ Cu(I)/Cu(II) promoting the Ni(II)/Ni(III) cycle could accelerate the PMS activation. This work provides new insights into the electron transfer between transition metals and the charge compensation mechanism for PMS activation. The degradation mechanism was proposed based on the XPS results before and after the reaction, a radical quenching test, and an EPR test. Combined with the SACP and SAP degradation intermediates identified by LC-MS, we suggest that the choice of treatment process depends on the occurrence of a steric hindrance effect between the molecular structure of the degradation target and free radicals.

Establishing sensitive detection method for carbohydrate antigen 15–3 (CA15–3) is of great significance for the early diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of breast cancer. Herein, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was fabricated by growing Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles in-situ within nanochannels and employing a signal gating strategy, achieving highly sensitive detection of CA15–3. Using simple Stöber method, a silica nanochannel film (SNF) was deposited onto an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrode. This two-dimensional (2D) nanoporous silica film provided a confined space, within which Co 3 O 4 nanozymes were synthesized in situ. Co 3 O 4 served as a peroxidase (POD)-mimic nanozyme, enabling the catalytic conversion of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into reactive oxygen species (ROS). Functioning as a nanocatalyst, Co 3 O 4 remarkedly enhanced the electrochemical oxidation of luminol, thereby boosting the ECL signal. This dual enhancement mechanism enabled the sensor to achieve high luminol-based ECL signal. The bio-recognition interface was constructed by functionalizing the outer surface of SNF with silane coupling agents and immobilizing aptamers. A measurable decrease in the ECL signal was generated due to the hindered diffusion of the emitter and co-reactant and increased interfacial resistance, which occurred when the aptamer-CA15–3 complex formed on the electrode surface. This response allowed for the quantification of CA15–3. Under optimal conditions, the developed aptasensor can detect CA15–3 in the range of 0.1 to 10,000 mU/mL, with a limit of detection of 26 μU/mL. Owing to its merits of simple fabrication, rapid analysis, high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and excellent selectivity, the developed immunosensor holds great potential for clinical diagnostics of tumor biomarkers.

A novel surface ion imprinted adsorbent [Co(II)-IIP] using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as function monomer and ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 as support matrix was prepared for Co(II) analysis with high selectivity. The prepared polymer was characterized by Fourier transmission infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm. Bath experiments of Co(II) adsorption onto Co(II)-IIP were performed under the optimum conditions. The experimental data were analyzed by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. It was found that the pseudo-second-order model best correlated the kinetic data. The intraparticle diffusion and liquid film diffusion were applied to discuss the adsorption mechanism. The results showed that Co(II) adsorption onto IIP was controlled by the intraparticle diffusion mechanism, along with a considerable film diffusion contribution. Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushke- vich adsorption models were applied to determine the isotherm parameters. Langmuir model fitted the experiment data well and the maximum calculated capacity of Co(II) reached 39.26 mg/g under room temperature. The thermodynamic data were indicative of the spontaneousness of the endothermic sorption process of Co(II) onto Co(II)-IIP. Co(II)-IIP showed high affinity and selectivity for template ion compared with non imprinted polymer (NIP).

Perovskite solar cells, which utilize organometal–halide perovskites as light-harvesting materials, have attracted great attention due to their high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and potentially low cost in fabrication. A compact layer of TiO2 or ZnO is generally applied as electron-transport layer (ETL) in a typical perovskite solar cell. In this study, we explored ternary oxides in the TiO2–ZnO system to find new materials for the ETL. Compact layers of titanium zinc oxides were readily prepared on the conducting substrate via spray pyrolysis method. The optical band gap, valence band maximum and conduction band minimum of the ternary oxides varied significantly with the ratio of Ti to Zn, surprisingly, in a nonmonotonic way. When a zinc-rich ternary oxide was applied as ETL for the device, a PCE of 15.10% was achieved, comparable to that of the device using conventional TiO2 ETL. Interestingly, the perovskite layer deposited on the zinc-rich ternary oxide is stable, in sharp contrast with that fabricated on a ZnO layer, which will turn into PbI2 readily when heated. These results indicate that potentially new materials with better performance can be found for ETL of perovskite solar cells in ternary oxides, which deserve more exploration.

Cadmium (Cd) is a persistent environmental pollutant that poses a significant health risk to humans and animals, with acute exposure known to induce kidney injury. Fucoidan (Fc), a natural bioactive polysaccharide derived from brown algae, exhibits diverse biological activities; however, its potential to protect against Cd-induced kidney damage and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of Fc on Cd-induced renal injury in vitro and further explored the role of transcription factor EB (TFEB) in regulating autophagy in its protective mechanism. Our results demonstrate that in Cd-exposed porcine kidney cells (PK-15), Fc suppressed the expression of renal inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1β) and kidney injury markers (NGAL, NTN-1, KIM-1), reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and downregulated apoptosis-related proteins (cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-9). Mechanistically, Fc upregulated TFEB protein expression, enhanced the levels of lysosomal function-related proteins (Cathepsin B, CTSB; Cathepsin D, CTSD), and reversed Cd-induced autophagic flux blockade. Importantly, TFEB silencing abolished the protective effects of Fc. Collectively, these findings suggest that Fc exerts renoprotective effects against Cd-induced injury by restoring autophagic flux, a process that involves TFEB.

An electrochemiluminescence-electrochemistry (ECL-EC) dual-mode sensing platform based on a vertically-ordered mesoporous silica films (VMSF) modified electrode was designed here for the sensitive and selective determination of cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3), a specific biomarker of breast cancer. VMSF was assembled through a rapid electrochemically assisted self-assembly (EASA) method and plays a crucial role in signal amplification via a strong electrostatic interaction with the positively charged bifunctional probe Ru(bpy)32+. To construct the biorecognition interface, epoxy functional silane was linked to the surface of VMSF for further covalent immobilization of the antibody. As a benefit from the specific combination of antigen and antibody, a non-conductive immunocomplex layer was formed in the presence of CA 15-3, leading to the hinderance of the mass and electron transfer of the probes. Based on this strategy, the dual-mode determination of CA 15-3 ranging from 0.1 mU/mL to 100 mU/mL with a LOD of 9 μU/mL for ECL mode, and 10 mU/mL to 200 U/mL with a LOD of 5.4 mU/mL for EC mode, was achieved. The proposed immunosensor was successfully employed for the detection of CA 15-3 in human serum without tedious pretreatment.Keywords:dual-mode detection;electrochemiluminescence;electrochemistry;cancer antigen 15-3;vertically ordered mesoporous silica film;immunosensor

A carotenoid production strain Rhodosporidium toruloides NP11 and its mutant strain R. toruloides A1-15 were studied under chemostat nitrogen-limited cultivation. Multi-omics analysis (metabolomics, lipidomics and transcriptomics) was used to investigate the different mechanisms of torularhodin accumulation between NP11 and A1-15. The results showed that the carotenoid synthesis pathway was significantly enhanced in A1-15 compared to NP11 under nitrogen limitation, due to the significant increase of torularhodin. Under nitrogen-limited conditions, higher levels of β-oxidation were present in A1-15 compared to those in NP11, which provided sufficient precursors for carotenoid synthesis. In addition, ROS stress accelerated the intracellular transport of iron ions, promoted the expression of CRTI and CRTY genes, and reduced the transcript levels of FNTB1 and FNTB2 in the bypass pathway, and these factors may be responsible for the regulation of high torularhodin production in A1-15. This study provided insights into the selective production of torularhodin.

Novel 3D mesoporous silica SBA-15 and 2D graphene oxide (GO) composite nano-fillers incorporated polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes (GO-SBA-15/PSf) were first prepared via blending modifications by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPs). 3D honeycomb-like SBA-15 not only improved the surface hydrophilicity but also provided extra nano-channels parceled in 2D GO networks for convenient hydrone transport via confinement-effect. The lamellar GO networks relieved the agglomeration of inorganic materials inside the polymer, anticipating in the interfacial polymerization reaction. GO-SBA-15/PSf UF membranes were systematically investigated using contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) methods. The pure water flux reached 641.7 L m -2 h −1 which was 3 times than that of pristine PSf membranes (229.2 L m -2 h −1 ) under the pressure of 0.1 MPa. Negative charge of GO generated electrostatic repulsion with protein, which facilitated a high rejection of 98.22% and excellent FRR value of 85% that was 1.5 times than that of pristine PSf membranes (58%). The UF membranes fabricated by new multidimensional nano-fillers overcame the trade-off effect between permeability and protein rejection.

Copper as a non-noble metal catalyst has great prospects in the hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethanol. In this paper, Cu-MnO/SBA-15 catalysts with highly catalytic performance and stability were prepared. The mechanism was elucidated by experiments and DFT calculations . The Cu and MnO were coexistent on reduced x Cu y Mn/SBA-15. Appropriate Cu/Mn ratio was beneficial for increasing the Cu surface area and reducing the size of Cu. The rate-controlled step was found and the MnO could effectively lower the difficulty of acetaldehyde formation by dioxyethylidene. DFT calculations indicated that the formation of ethyl acetate at the Cu-MnO interface was largely prevented. The optimal catalytic hydrogenation activity was obtained for 9Cu1Mn/SBA-15, with the conversion of acetic acid and selectivity of ethanol of 99.9% and 90.1%, respectively. The catalytic activity could remain within 72 h which was more stable than the original Cu-based catalyst.

BACKGROUND Efficient and sustainable production of structured phospholipids (SPLs) enriched in medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) in a heterogeneous manner is crucial for their potential applications in functional foods and drugs. Herein, for the first time, Zn- and Al-incorporated SBA-15 silicas were prepared by the coprecipitation method and further researched for catalytic synthesis of MCFA-enriched SPLs through acidolysis reaction of natural phospholipids with capric or caprylic acid. RESULTS The as-prepared Zn- and Al-incorporated SBA-15 samples exhibited superior catalytic activities under mild experimental conditions (50 °C, 6 h) to commercial homogeneous Lewis acids and benchmark enzymes. Correspondingly, the capric acid and caprylic acid incorporations were respectively achieved up to ~40.25 ± 0.40% (or 35.08 ± 0.09%) and 37.26 ± 0.38% (or 33.02 ± 0.13%) for Zn- (or Al-) incorporated SBA-15 catalyst. Moreover, various methods such as scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and pyridine–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the two catalysts in order to elucidate the possible structure–performance relationship. Accordingly, the above-mentioned satisfactory results are most probably due to the well-ordered mesostructures and large amounts of active Lewis acid sites existing in the investigated materials. Noticeably, the two catalysts featured good separation and excellent recyclability as well. CONCLUSION The Zn- and Al-incorporated SBA-15 catalysts studied in this work might shed light on novel, sustainable and economic alternatives for effective SPL production to diminish the applications of conventional homogeneous catalysts and biocatalysts in food industries. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
