CO 2 -responsive cationic polymers offer a route to couple industrial kiln exhaust pretreatment with sludge deep dewatering, using the abundant CO 2 in flue gas as a trigger to enhance flocculation. This study proposes a flocculation then activation strategy to enhance the flocculation effects of the CO 2 -responsive Poly-(DMC-DMAEMA) copolymer. The polymer is first dispersed in its low-viscosity, non-activated state to achieve uniform contact with suspended particles, followed by CO 2 bubbling to trigger in situ protonation of the PDMAEMA blocks. Using a diatomaceous suspension as model sludge, flocculation behaviors under different CO 2 addition modes were systematically compared. Pre-activation caused a sharp increase in solution viscosity and poor dispersibility, aggravating inhomogeneity. Post-activation-dispersion followed by CO 2 activation effectively balanced uniform adsorption with in situ bridging reinforcement, yielding superior floc growth, turbidity removal, and dewatering efficiency. This mechanistic strategy directly resolves the dispersion problem characteristic of conventional high-molecular-weight flocculants, thereby establishing a foundation for the integrated application of kiln exhaust pretreatment and sludge deep dewatering.

Nanofibrous membranes have great potential for treating oily wastewater. However, the random stacking of nanofibers during the electrospinning process resulted in a broad pore size distribution and reduced separation efficiency. Moreover, for oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by ionic surfactants, the small oil droplets deform under the applied pressure and are squeezed into the membrane pores, leading to a decrease in flux and fouling. In this work, we developed superhydrophilic nanofibrous membranes with demulsification properties via electrospinning and a solvothermal seed-induced method. Notably, the incorporation of ZIF-8 nanoparticles offers multiple advantages, such as reducing membrane pore size, increasing the surface roughness, and enhancing membrane surface charge. These features synergistically improve both separation selectivity and demulsification properties. As a result, the membrane exhibits outstanding separation performance, achieving a separation efficiency of 96.37% for diesel-in-water emulsions and a high permeation flux of 4100 L m −2 h −1 for dichloromethane-in-water systems. This work provides an effective strategy for developing high-performance membranes for oil-in-water emulsions separation applications.

Based on the synergistic effects among phosphorus, nitrogen, and boron elements, this study developed a novel and highly efficient flame-retardant system to enhance the fire safety of polypropylene (PP) during its application. An integrated intumescent flame retardant (IFR) was prepared via supramolecular self-assembly by surface-modifying piperazine phosphate (PAPP) with phytic acid (PA) and melamine (MEL), and was named PM@PAPP. Subsequently, it was combined with zinc borate (ZB) to prepare flame-retardant PP composites. The PM@PAPP/ZB/PP composite exhibited excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance. Specifically, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PP5 reached 35.3%, and its vertical burning test (UL-94) rating was V-0 level. The peak heat release rate (pHRR) was 91% lower than that of pure PP. The peak smoke production rate (pSPR) of PP5 decreased from 0.097 m 2 /s for pure PP to 0.007 m 2 /s, representing a reduction of 93%. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy results confirmed that the synergistic effect of ZB and PM@PAPP promoted the formation of continuous and dense carbon layers. This study provides a new strategy for improving the flame-retardant properties of PP and expanding its application in fields with strict fire safety requirements.

To overcome the limited thermal stability and fire retardancy of single-component organic foam and gel for coal spontaneous combustion prevention, this study developed a novel gel foam via a “gel-organic foam composite” approach. Comparative tests with conventional materials showed that the gel foam maintained 86.47% water retention at 60°C and over 50% at 180°C, outperforming organic foam and gel. Its layered-porous structure, formed by gel-foam synergy, controlled volatile release and reinforced the char layer. Fire retardancy tests revealed a 20°C higher cross-point temperature and a 16% relative enhancement in CO 2 suppression rate at 150°C versus organic foam. Programmed heating and field tests confirmed rapid cooling of a 900°C coal sample to below 100°C within 600 s without re-ignition, whereas single-component materials re-ignited. The gel foam achieves “physical encapsulation–chemical stabilization–oxidation inhibition” synergy: CMC-Na and NaCit cross-linking form a dense network that adsorbs free radicals on foam walls, inhibits active coal functional groups ( OH, CH 2 ), and reduces oxygen contact area by 40%. This structurally optimized material offers broad potential for long-term fire suppression in complex coal fire zones.

Polyethylene (PE) is widely used as a general-purpose plastic; however, its application in harsh environments is limited by poor resistance to thermal cycling crack resistance. In this study, a dual-modification strategy was developed to improve the thermal cycling crack resistance of PE by incorporating fibrous wollastonite (FW) and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). FW acts as a rigid reinforcing phase that restricts polymer-chain mobility and helps suppress crack initiation. EVA serves as a flexible toughening phase and promotes energy dissipation during deformation. The combination of FW and EVA delays crack propagation and improves the crack resistance of PE. The combined use of FW and EVA produces a synergistic effect involving physical crack blocking and energy dissipation, thereby delaying crack propagation. Consequently, the modified PE demonstrates substantially enhanced resistance to thermal cycling cracking. The PE coating samples maintained structural integrity after cyclic exposure between −40°C and 60°C for 100 h. In addition, the tensile strength increased to 14.94 MPa, representing a 39% improvement compared with pristine PE (10.73 MPa). The combined FW-EVA system effectively improves PE's thermal cycling crack resistance, offering a feasible strategy for its high-demand applications.

The rapid evolution of pulsed-power systems and microelectronic modules, which are demanding ever-higher energy-storage densities, has intensified the search for polymer dielectrics that can deliver both high discharged energy density ( U d ) and robust charge–discharge efficiency ( η ). To address the low energy storage density of polyetherimide (PEI). Two-dimensional montmorillonite nanosheets were synthesized by the liquid-phase intercalation method in this study. Herein, organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) nanosheets were homogeneously dispersed in polyetherimide (PEI) via solution casting. At only 0.5 wt% OMMT, the resultant film exhibits a relative permittivity of 4.20 while maintaining an ultralow dielectric loss (tan δ < 0.015) across 10 2 –10 5 Hz. Weibull statistics yield a characteristic breakdown strength of 542.98 MV/m, corresponding to a 36.5% increase over neat PEI, and deliver a discharge energy density of 5.68 J cm −3 -an enhancement of 95.9% with charge–discharge efficiency remaining above 80.0%. Finite-element simulations (COMSOL) reveal that the OMMT layers establish an electrostatic shield that impedes electrical-tree propagation, rationalizing the superior breakdown endurance. These results underscore the high-temperature potential of OMMT/PEI nanocomposites for next-generation dielectric capacitors.

Oral ulcer is a common and painful oral mucosal disease that severely impairs patients' quality of life. Conventional topical therapies often suffer from limited retention and inadequate efficacy due to the unique oral microenvironment. In this study, a multifunctional microneedles (MNs) patch based on metal-phenolic network (MPN) was developed for the treatment of oral ulcer. The MPN was formed by coordinating zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) with epicatechin (EC), resulting in the formation of ZnEC nanoparticles (ZnEC NPs), which were incorporated into a dissolvable gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel matrix to construct the MNs. The developed ZnEC/Gel MNs exhibited excellent mechanical, adhesive, degradation, and penetration properties. Meanwhile, the MNs enabled targeted delivery and controlled release of EC and Zn 2+ directly into the ulcer site, effectively scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, the ZnEC/Gel MNs exhibited significant antibacterial efficacy against common oral pathogens in vitro compared to the commercial propolis oral film (POF). Moreover, in vitro cytocompatibility assessment showed that ZnEC/Gel MNs significantly improved the proliferation and migration of human oral keratinocytes (HOKs), outperforming the POF. These results demonstrated that this MPN-based microneedles patch offered an effective management for oral ulcer, with potential for extension to other mucosal diseases.

Succinonitrile (SN) electrolyte is emerging as an ideal candidate for solid-state electrolytes due to its high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stability window, and low cost. However, severe side reactions with lithium metal and poor mechanical strength have significantly hindered the rapid development of SN-based electrolytes. In this study, an in situ thermal polymerization technique was employed to integrate SN with cross-linked poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), yielding a composite solid electrolyte that combines high ionic conductivity with excellent mechanical properties. The optimized SN-PMMA50 electrolyte achieves a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 2.95 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , an electrochemical stability window of 4.75 V, a lithium-ion transference number of 0.68, and a tensile strength of 165 MPa. Furthermore, the introduction of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)-forming additive significantly suppresses the side reactions between SN and the lithium anode. The optimized SN-PMMA50-FEC30 composite electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and cycling stability. The assembled Li/LiFePO 4 solid-state battery retains 96% capacity after 200 cycles at room temperature. The incorporation of PMMA and FEC markedly enhances the mechanical properties of the electrolyte and the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface, which provides a highly promising strategy for the application of SN-based polymer electrolytes in lithium metal batteries.

This study synthesized a non-ionic amphiphilic self-emulsifying waterborne epoxy resin using toluene diisocyanate (TDI), polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (mPEG), and epoxy resin E44 as raw materials via a two-step synthesis. The waterborne epoxy resin was emulsified using the phase inversion method, and the emulsification process was investigated. The prepared emulsion was cured using a commercially available aqueous curing agent, followed by mechanical properties testing of the cured products. Results from FTIR and 1 H NMR hydrogen spectrum analyses confirmed the successful grafting of hydrophilic polyether segments onto the epoxy resin without ring-opening of epoxy groups. The optimal synthesis temperatures for the two-step process were determined as 50°C (first step) and 65°C (second step), yielding transparent and pure products. During inversion emulsification, the stirring speed was 2500 rpm, and the water addition rate was 0.03 mL/s. Emulsion stability reached its highest grade when the molecular weight of mPEG was 1000, with the smallest particle size of 109.23 nm and the lowest polydispersity index of 0.201. The cured product exhibited tensile strength of 5.43 MPa and flexural strength of 29.49 MPa, demonstrating favorable mechanical strength and flexibility.

As the global population of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients continues to expand, high-performance adsorbents for uremic toxins have emerged as a critical solution to alleviate dialysis treatment challenges. In this work, a layered double hydroxide (Mg–Al LDH) was prepared via a facile hydrothermal approach and subsequently functionalized for adsorption of protein-bound toxins by organosilicon quaternary ammonium salt (Q-Mg–Al LDH). The synthesized Q-Mg–Al LDH was then incorporated into sodium alginate (SA) solution to achieve a three-dimensional Q-Mg–Al LDH/SA composite aerogel (SA-Q) by freeze-drying for easy maneuverability as adsorbents. Specifically, the organosilicon quaternary ammonium-grafted LDH (Q-Mg–Al LDH) offered both long alkyl chain and positively charged quaternary ammonium moieties, enabling synergistic adsorption through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, thereby exhibiting superior adsorption capacity (222.7 mg/g) for hippuric acid (HA, one typical protein-bound uremic toxin). The optimized SA-Q possessed outstanding adsorption capabilities (141.8 mg/g); more importantly, it could maintain a 95% removal rate even after 8 cycles, and also could selectively remove the diffused HA in the dialysate during hemodialysis, indicating its excellent operability and recyclability. This work demonstrated a promising strategy for constructing advanced adsorbents to eliminate uremic toxins from dialysate to facilitate the development and popularization of miniaturized hemodialysis equipment.

Silica-hybridized carbon black (CB-SiO 2 ) shows a promising eco-friendly filler for tread rubber, combining the advantages of both potentially. Here, in situ hydrolyzed nano-SiO 2 anchored on CB particles was prepared by varying the tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) dosage, and its effect on the properties of natural rubber (NR) composites was studied. Results demonstrated the existence of hydrogen bond between CB and SiO 2 , and increasing the anchored SiO 2 delayed curing, yet enhanced tensile strength by 35.6% and lowered rolling resistance (tan δ @60°C) by 22.7% while maintaining wear resistance (8 mL TEOS/10 g CB, no coupling agent). The improvement is attributed to the hybrid's higher specific surface area, favorable particle-size distribution, and surface protrusions, which strengthen rubber-filler interaction despite the reduced dispersive free energy ( γ s d $$ {\gamma}_s^d $$ ). This work presents a green and sustainable strategy for designing high-performance CB in its production process.

Ionic sensors, serving as key interfaces between biological organisms and electronic systems, show significant potential in wearable electronics due to their flexibility and low impedance. However, solvent evaporation degrades traditional ionic conductors, limiting their stability and lifespan. Inspired by human skin, this work constructs a multifunctional ionogel (LIPC) via a one-pot method using biomass-derived lipoic acid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate, and a polyurethane-cellulose framework. Leveraging dynamic disulfide and multiple hydrogen bonds, LIPC exhibits robust mechanical properties (fracture strength: 76 kPa, strain: 600%), stable skin adhesion (280 N/m), and high self-healing efficiency (98.5%). The continuous conductive network from the ionic liquid endows high sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 7.6), fast response (210 ms), and a broad strain range (5%–300%), while its solvent-free system ensures fatigue resistance with only 16% decay after 1000 cycles. Dynamic bonding enables rapid reconstruction of conductive pathways after damage, achieving 60% electrical repair efficiency. Benefiting from strong adhesion and sensitive signal transduction, LIPC accurately captures human motion signals and enables real-time robotic hand control via finger gestures. Its intrinsic temperature perception and piezoresistive properties extend applications to environmental monitoring and encrypted communication, offering an innovative solution for smart healthcare, human-machine interaction, and secure information transmission.
