Dielectric capacitor has been rapidly developed in recent years, and the ceramics nanofibers/polymer nanocomposites with improved dielectric properties have huge potential in exploitation and application. In this article, the barium titanate (BT) nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning and encapsulated by titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) via sol–gel method to prepare the core–shell structured BT@TiO 2 nanofibers and then utilized to prepare poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. The study we have performed shows that the dielectric constant of BT@TiO 2 /PVDF composites with 4 vol% fillers increase to 24 at 1 kHz, accompanied with the low dielectric loss of 0.019. The breakdown strength of BT@TiO 2 /PVDF composites achieves 128 kV/mm at the content of 2 vol% BT@TiO 2 nanofibers, which is 150% of PVDF and 170% of BT/PVDF composites with the same content of fillers. Meanwhile, the tensile stress of BT@TiO 2 /PVDF composites also reaches the highest value of 44.01 MPa with 2 vol% fillers. In addition, the initial thermal decomposition temperature decreases with the increasing of BT@TiO 2 nanofibers.

Modified BaTiO 3 ceramics that possess high dielectric permittivity and acceptable temperature stability have been widely utilized as multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for high-frequency bypass and power filtering in automotive applications. However, since the increasing demand for high-capacity and small-size, high-permittivity materials that can serve as dielectric layers in MLCCs are urgently required. In this work, we design and fabricate a special BaTiO 3 -0.03Mg-0.02Y-0.02CaZrO 3 ceramic with a high dielectric permittivity of 3000 and the dielectric variation below ±13% in the temperature range of -55–150°C, fulfilling the requirements of X8R capacitors. To achieve these results, we employed grain size engineering and cation doping, using BaTiO 3 precursors with a particle size of 240 nm to prepare the BaTiO 3 -based ceramics with fine grains, while Mg and Y co-doping was used for improving the temperature stability due to dielectric dispersion. Utilizing these high-permittivity BaTiO 3 -based materials, we fabricated MLCCs that satisfy the X8R criterion, possessing a high dielectric constant of 2950 and a high breakdown field (410 kV/cm).

Polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD)/hydroxylated barium titanate (BTOH) and PDCPD/norbornene functionalized barium titanate (BTNA) composites have been in situ prepared by frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results show that the glass transition temperature ( T g ) of PDCPD/BTNA composites was higher than that of PDCPD/BTOH, which was mainly due to the enhanced interfacial affinity between BTNA and PDCPD matrix. The PDCPD/BTNA composites exhibited high dielectric constant (20.2 at 100 Hz) due to the interfacial polarization between PDCPD and BTNA, while the non-conductive norbornene groups prevented leakage current generation and supported low loss tangent (0.017).

A microstructured surface has been applied in self-powered triboelectric pressure sensors to increase the charge-carrying sites and enhance the output performance. However, the microstructure increases the distance between the electrode and the triboelectric layer, and its influence on the output performance is unknown. Herein, we proposed a dome-conformal electrode strategy for a self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) pressure sensor. With a simple reverse-dome adsorption process, an ultrathin triboelectric layer and Ag electrode can be made conformal to the dome PDMS structure. The TENG sensor is constructed with paper as a positive triboelectric layer. Compared with the device based on nonconformal structure, the conformal design strategy endows the device with a faster charge transfer and enhanced output voltage. By doping with BaTiO3, the outermost triboelectric layer can be easily modified to improve its ability of sustaining charge, and an ultrathin PDMS layer is coated on the triboelectric layer to expand the triboelectric polarity difference between two triboelectric layers so as to enhance the output voltage. The synergistic effects enable the optimized TENG sensor with a sensitivity of 0.75 V/kPa in the low-pressure region (0–26 kPa) and 0.19 V/kPa in the high-pressure range (26–120 kPa). Its application in human motion detection, grabbing water beakers, and noncontact distance testing has been demonstrated. This work provides a route such as a conformal structure design strategy to enhance the output performance of a microstructure-based TENG sensor.

A flower-like core–shell heterostructured oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst based on tetragonal BaTiO 3 nanoparticles (t-BTO NPs) and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanoarrays was prepared in this study. The influence from the self-polarization effect of t-BTO on the OER performance of NiFe-LDH is reported. Intriguingly, the OER activity of the t-BTO@NiFe-LDH heterojunctions in an alkaline media (1.0 M KOH) exhibited a low overpotential of 186 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and a low Tafel slope of 38.3 mV dec -1 , which were far superior to those of the component materials: NiFe-LDH (267 mV and 94.8 mV dec -1 ) and t-BTO NPs (517 mV and 132.4 mV dec -1 ). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the effective electronic modulation between t-BTO NPs and NiFe-LDH nanoplatelets narrowed the bandgap, promoted the electric conductivity, moderately raised Ed (i.e., energy level of the d-band center), optimized the adsorption ability of the oxygen-containing intermediates (*O, *OH, and *OOH), and induced an apparent reduction in the free energy barrier for the transformation from O* to OOH* in the t-BTO@NiFe-LDH heterojunctions. The PDOS result confirmed that t-BTO in the heterojunctions was easier to polarize, which can cause the rapid electron transfer in the OER process. In these heterostructures, the interface tension between BTO NPs and NiFe-LDH endowed BTO with easier self-polarization, thus leading to greater band tilting and faster electron transfer. Multiple synergistic effects of the flower-like core–shell t-BTO@NiFe-LDH heterojunctions enabled them with higher electrocatalytic activity. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the rational design of a high-efficiency, noble metal-free ferroelectric OER electrocatalyst based on the self-polarization of t-BTO NPs.

Ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer nanocomposites have garnered considerable attention for film capacitor applications. However, the addition of highly polarized inorganic fillers with a large proportion into PVDF leads to poor processability and high energy loss, which significantly destroy the structural integrity of the film and restrain the practical application of film capacitors. Herein, we constructed core–shell BaTiO3 (BTO)@graphene oxide (GO) architectures via an aerosolization method and incorporated them into the PVDF matrix, which not only provided a highly insulating GO layer to improve the breakdown strength and suppress the dielectric loss but also improved the dispersion of fillers to realize a high interfacial interaction. The 0.4 wt % BTO@GO/PVDF film exhibited a high discharged energy density of 2.9 J cm–3 at 200 MV m–1, 70% higher than that of the PVDF film, a charge–discharge efficiency of 86%, and a depressed dielectric loss of 0.07 at 1 kHz. Moreover, the ultralow content of fillers can greatly improve the processability and reduce the defects with the structural integrity as well as the performance stability of the film during stretching. This work sheds light on the improvement of energy storage performance of polymer nanocomposites for film capacitors.

In this study, two kinds of hybrid particles named as BT@CNT and CNT@BT were prepared by chemical bonding between barium titanates and two types of carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes with different structural parameters in the presence of silane as a coupling agent. The effects of structures of hybrid particles on microstructure and dielectric performance of the obtained composites were studied. Herein, the BT@CNT hybrid filler aids in improving the dielectric permittivity and the CNT@BT hybrid filler has a main advantage in suppressing the dielectric loss (Dielectric permittivity 300–573 and loss 39.5–6.9 for BT@CNT/PDMS, Dielectric permittivity 65–120 and loss 1.5–0.75 for CNT@BT/PDMS at 100 Hz). Additionally, the dielectric performances of the composites can be manipulated by controlling the hybrid fillers structure and the hybrid ratio. In sum, this work looks promising for the fabrication of property-tailored materials for wide applications in electrostatic capacitors, embedded devices and charge storage device in future.

Here we demonstrated a remarkable improvement in the dielectric performance of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composites via incorporating distinguished hybrid nanofibers , namely, Ag nanoparticles-embedded BaTiO 3 (Ag@BaTiO 3 , Ag@BT) nanofibers, which were fabricated by coaxial electrospinning technology followed by calcination . The Ag nanoparticles on BaTiO 3 nanofibers were found to play a comprehensive role on the dielectric performances, including the better dispersion of hybrid nanofibers leading to homogeneity of electric field, the formation of charge transfer complex in the hybrid region which enhanced the interfacial polarization, and the Coulomb blockade effect of Ag nanoparticles to further suppress the interfacial charge accumulation. As a result, the PVDF/Ag@BT composites exhibited high dielectric constant of 38.87@1 kHz and low loss of 0.02@1 kHz.

To further improve the ethanol sensing performance of LaFeO 3 (LFO) nanoparticles, the co-doping of acceptor and donor at La and Fe sites at equal mole amount was designed to increase the oxygen adsorbing ability of the resultant nanoparticles. A series of (La,Ba)(Fe,Ti)O 3 nanoparticles, with the designed mole ratios of Ba/La (Ti/Fe) as 0, 0.25, 0.33, 0.50, and 1.0, were prepared by a citric sol–gel method. XRD confirmed the main phase of orthorhombic LFO, and the impurity phases of cubic BaTiO 3 (BTO) and orthorhombic BaCO 3 . The incorporation of Ba and Ti into the LFO lattice was verified by the increased unit cell volume of LFO upon more doping. TEM, BET, and XPS measurements indicated that the appropriate co-doping of Ba and Ti into the LFO lattice and the simultaneous existence of BTO and BaCO 3 resulted in smaller grain size, larger BET surface area, and thus higher concentration of adsorbed oxygen species than those in the pristine LFO nanoparticle. Among all (La,Ba)(Fe,Ti)O 3 sensors, the sensor based on the (La,Ba)(Fe,Ti)O 3 nanoparticles with the designed Ba/La = 0.50 exhibited the highest gas response and sensitivity toward ethanol at the prime working temperature of 132 °C, which was ascribed to the higher surface oxygen coverage contributed by the synergistic effect of co-doping and impurity phases on the number of surface active sites and oxygen adsorbing ability.

Nanocomposite polymer materials are commonly used in energy storage devices on account of the excellent dielectric performance. However, there is a long-standing contradiction between dielectric constant and breakdown strength of nanocomposite. In this study, polyurea (PUA) is designed to in situ modify BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles. Based on the excellent dispersity, favorable compatibility and outstanding insulating performance of BT@PUA particles, the P(VDF-CTFE)/BT@PUA nanocomposite exhibits enhanced breakdown strength and reliability. In addition, the introduction of BT@PUA enhanced the dielectric constant to 10.72 and 35% larger than that of pure P(VDF-CTFE). As a result, the energy density of BT@PUA composite reaches 8.94 J/cm 3 , which is 1.65 times than P(VDF-CTFE) (5.41 J/cm 3 ) and 4.5 times than the commercial biaxially oriented polypropylenes. Meanwhile, the quantified simulation illustrates the necessity of extremely high breakdown strength of the shell. Experiment results and simulation reveal that coating PUA is a novel and effective way to enhance energy storage performance for polymer nanocomposites with a promising broad application prospect.

Polymer dielectric composites are of great interest as film capacitors that are widely used in pulsed power systems. For a long time, huge efforts have been devoted to achieving energy densities as high as possible to satisfy the miniaturization and high integration of electronic devices. However, the discharge efficiency which is particularly crucial to practical applications has gained little attention. With the target of achieving concurrently improved energy density and efficiency, a class of rationally designed bilayer composites consisting of a pure polyetherimide layer and a BaTiO3/P(VDF-HFP) composite layer were prepared. Interestingly, the bilayer composites exhibit ultrahigh discharge efficiencies η (>95%) under external electric fields up to 400 kV mm−1 which are much higher than most of the so far reported results (η < 80%). Meanwhile, a low loss (tan δ < 0.05 @ 10 kHz) comparable to that of the pure polyetherimide is obtained. In addition, the bilayer composites show impressive improvements in breakdown strengths Eb, i.e., 285%, 363%, 366% and 567% for composites with 5 vol%, 10 vol%, 20 vol% and 40 vol% BaTiO3, compared to their single layer counterparts, resulting in obviously improved energy densities Ud. In particular, the bilayer composite with 10 vol% BaTiO3 displays the most prominent comprehensive energy storage performance, i.e., η ∼ 96.8% @ 450 kV mm−1, Ud ∼ 6 J cm−3 @ 450 kV mm−1, tan δ ∼ 0.025 @ 10 kHz, and Eb ∼ 483.18 kV mm−1. The ultrahigh discharge efficiencies and high energy densities, along with low loss and breakdown strengths, make these bilayer composites ideal candidates for high-performance dielectric energy-storage capacitors.

Core–shell nanofillers designed for dielectric nanocomposites are expected to integrate high relative permittivity ( ε r ) and breakdown strength ( E b ). However, conventional core–shell nanofillers exhibit two major drawbacks: (i) the low- ε r shell greatly limits the ε r of the entire nanofiller, and (ii) the differences of calcination performance and lattice constant between the core and shell materials induce extra imperfections, which can cause premature breakdown. As a result, significantly enhancing the discharge energy density ( U d ) at low filling content is difficult. Herein, core–shell nanofibers constituted by single element-doped BaTiO 3 are prepared as fillers. They integrate relatively high ε r and E b , helping to obtain high- U d dielectric nanocomposites. The single-layer nanocomposite films with 2 wt% polydopamine-modified BZT15@BZT35 nanofibers (BZT15@BZT35@PDA_nfs) show 64% enhancement of U d compared with pristine poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The sandwich nanocomposite films (PVDF/BZT15@BZT35@PDA_nf/PVDF/PVDF) with 2 wt% nanofibers in the middle layer achieve approximately 100% enhancement. The proposed nanofiller design strategy can be easily realized by coaxial electrospinning and further developed by tri-axial electrospinning and other multi-nozzle electrospinning methods. This study provides valuable insights into developing high-energy–density polymer nanocomposites with low filling content.
