For better use of solar energy, the development of efficient broadband photocatalyst has attracted extraordinary attention. In this study, a ternary composite consisting of Sr 2 LaF 7 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ upconversion (UC) nanocrystals and Bi nanoparticles loaded BiOBr nanosheets with oxygen vacancies (OVs, SLFBB) was designed and synthesized by multistep solvent-thermal method. Mechanisms of in-situ formation of Bi nanoparticles and OVs in BiOBr/Sr 2 LaF 7 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ composites (SFLB) are clarified. The Bi metal and OVs enhanced the light-harvesting capacity in the region of visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR), and promoted the separation of electron–hole (e − /h + ) pairs. Furthermore, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Bi metal can improve the energy transfer from Sr 2 LaF 7 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ to BiOBr via nonradiative energy transfer process, resulting in enhancing the light utilization from upconverting NIR into Vis light. Due to the synergistic effects of UC function, SPR and OVs, the SFLBB exhibited obviously enhanced photocatalytic ability for the degradation of BPA with a rate of 8.9 × 10 −3 min −1 , which is about 2.78 times higher than 3.2 × 10 −3 min −1 of BiOBr (BOB) under UV–Vis-NIR light irradiation. This work provides a novel strategy for the project of high-efficiency Bismuth-based broadband photocatalysts, which is helpful to further understand the mechanism of enhanced photocatalysis by UC function and plasmonic effect.

Synchronously extending the light-harvesting window and accelerating photogenerated carrier migration still present a contradiction in photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, BiOBr-based nanosheets (BOB-20) with triple active sites of Bi NPs, amorphous carbon and oxygen vacancies (Ov) were constructed via a in-situ solid-phase reduction. On account of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Bi NPs that can serve as electron transport hubs to enhance visible light absorption and induces photothermal effect to raise temperature of catalyst, as well as highly conductive porous C nanoplates as electronic export medium that can speed the separation and transportation of chargers, meanwhile, Ov can promote CO2 adsorption/activation via enhanced local electron states. Ultimately, BOB-20 achieves a CO generation rate as high as 43.99 μmol g -1 under visible light, which is 3.9 times higher than that of the pristine BiOBr (11.15 μmol g -1 ). This study proposes a green and low-cost solvent-free strategy for CO2 conversion strategy that from the synthesis of catalyst to the final application aspect.

The construction of heterojunction structure is an effective strategy for solving photogenerated electron-hole recombination. In this work, a kind of 1D/2D S-scheme BiPO 4 /BiOBr heterojunction film is designed and constructed by in-situ electrochemical-ion-exchange method on Bi plate. The S-scheme transfer path of photogenerated electrons of BiPO 4 /BiOBr film is collaboratively confirmed through DFT calculation and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectra. As-prepared S-scheme BiPO 4 /BiOBr heterojunction film has the higher CO 2 photoreduction activity (296.5 μmol·g −1 ) to CO, 1.9 times than pure BiOBr film, which should be mainly attributed to improved light utilization efficiency and effective separation/migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

Bi/BiOBr/Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 heterojunction was synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal method using DMF as carbon source for Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 and reducing agent for Bi 3+ , NaBr as bromine source and Bi(NO 3 ) 3 as bismuth source. The photocatalytic properties were evaluated with photodegradation of rhodamine B, tetracycline and oxytetracycline under visible light with the degradation efficiency of 99.83% ( k = 0.5843 min −1 , 9 min), 81.75% ( k = 0.0247 min −1 , 60 min) and 70.23% ( k = 0.0225 min −1 , 60 min), respectively. The enhanced photoactivity is ascribed to the increased separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pair and improved electron migration rate, causing by strong visible-light adsorption, surface plasmon resonance of Bi nanoparticles and the matched energy band between BiOBr and Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 . In addition, as nitrogen-containing organic pollutants of rhodamine B, tetracycline and oxytetracycline, N element was proved to form ammonium under photocatalysis with indoxyl blue method. More importantly, this work also evaluated the ecotoxicological effects of pollutant, indicating the decreased ecotoxicological effects of pollutant after degradation.

To compare photodegradation processes in single- and binary-contaminant systems, a representative antibiotic (tetracycline) and insecticide (imidacloprid) were employed as two contaminants of emerging concern. Ag/AgBr modified BiOBr was synthesized hydrothermally in an ionic-liquid/water medium and characterized via various techniques to support mechanistic studies. As-prepared flower-shaped Ag/AgBr/BiOBr exhibits superior photocatalytic activity to Ag/AgBr and BiOBr. Parallel experiments were conducted in single-contaminant systems to optimize the solution chemistry for comparison studies; these suggested that the photodegradation rate (DR) is highest at 1.0 g L−1 at catalyst dosages ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 g L−1, while raising the initial concentration reduces the DR. Additionally, electrostatic interactions between the reactants and photocatalyst cause DR fluctuations at different pH values. In the mechanistic studies, the contributions of the dominant active species (˙O2− and h+) were analysed quantitatively through quenching tests with scavengers. Furthermore, electrostatic interactions between the reactants and the active species result in non-equilibrated contributions from ˙O2− and h+ in single-contaminant systems. Comparison studies distinctly demonstrated a synergistic effect in binary-contaminant systems, which is caused by the mutually complementary utilization of h+ and ˙O2− during the photodegradation of tetracycline and imidacloprid.

Uniform well-defined nanostructured BiOBr microspheres have been fabricated via a simple hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene glycol (EG). The heavy metal ion adsorption on the as-synthesized nanostructured BiOBr microspheres was systematically assessed by measuring the residual concentration during the adsorption process using a colorimetric method for Cr(VI) concentration, and an extraction-colorimetric method for Cd(II) and Pb(II) concentrations. The nanostructured BiOBr microspheres showed good removal capacity for heavy metal ions (Cr, Cd, Pb), and excellent adsorption properties for low concentration heavy metal ions, indicating potential applications in water purification. Based on the quick and efficient heavy metal ion removal ability of nanostructured BiOBr microspheres, a continuous filtering-type water purification device was designed and constructed. In using this continuous filtering type water purification device, 1 g of adsorbent can purify about 4900 g of Pb(II) contaminated water, 5900 g of Cd(II) contaminated water, or 21 500 g of Cr(VI) contaminated water having initial concentrations of 200 μg L−1 to successfully attain the World Health Organization standard for drinking water. The good removal capacity can be attributed to the hierarchical nanostructure, which displays a large specific surface area and strong adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Metal-ion doping and halogen substitution have been largely applied to tune the bandgap of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) to upgrade its photodegradation capacity. In this work, the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic behavior of solvothermally synthesized BiOBr photocatalysts can be optimized via the synergistic effect of Y3+- and I−-doping. After an adsorption reaction in the dark and exposure for another 80 min to visible light, pure BiOBr can remove 46.5% of Congo red (CR) from water with an initial CR concentration of 50 mg L−1. Meanwhile, Bi0.8Y0.20OBr0.97I0.03, the co-doped catalyst, displays total degradation rates exceeding 98% and 92% with CR dosages of 50 and 100 mg L−1, respectively, demonstrating a doubled degradation capacity. With the co-doping solution, the negative charges on the catalysts reduce, more oxygen vacancies are generated, the bandgap remarkably narrows, and the photoabsorption range broadens for derivation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. The mechanism for optimized photodegradation behavior and dramatically increased adsorption capacity are discussed based on analyses of the structural evolution, surface properties including the chemical state and surface charge, electrochemical performance and the yield/type of photogenerated species. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations were conducted to investigate the structural state, density of states (DOS) and electrostatic potential.

The development of advanced photoactive materials has aroused widespread interest, but is severely plagued by the inherent narrow photo-responsive range and rapid recombination of electrons and holes. In this study, the unconventional BiOBr nanosheets decorated with Bi 0 and oxygen vacancies (OVs) are successfully synthesized through a facial one-pot hydrothermal method, followed by heat treatment. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and mannitol contribute to the selective exposure of (001) and (010) facets, respectively. The absence of the outermost Br atoms facilitates the simultaneous generation of OVs and Bi 0 on the surface during heating, forming the Schottky junction. The synergy of SPR in the Bi 0 metal, OVs and Schottky junction can effectively enhance the light absorption and charge separation. This work proposes and verifies a feasible approach to construct defects in-situ by regulating the crystal facets and manipulating the surface atomic arrangement and coordination.

A novel Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped BiOBr photocatalyst with 3D flowerlike hierarchical architectures were successfully fabricated through self-assembled process without any templates under hydrothermal conditions, and the structure and properties of the photocatalysts were characterized. The results indicate that Yb 3+ ions and Er 3+ ions are successfully doped into the lattice of BiOBr, and the as-obtained photocatalyst can respond the NIR light and emit red and green light due to the up-conversion effect of the rare-earth ions. Meanwhile, with co-doped Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ions content increasing, oxygen vacancy concentration in the photocatalyst rises. The oxygen vacancy will form the intermediate energy band, which can decrease the photon energy required for electronical transition, and thus help to utilize the luminous energy generated by up-conversion luminescence. Moreover, the appropriate introduction of defects (oxygen vacancy defect and impurity atom) can further promote the transfer and separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers. Hence, Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped BiOBr photocatalyst exhibits enhanced photocatalytic properties under broad spectrum (UV/vis/NIR) excitation, which is about 4 times as high as that of pure BiOBr.

The rational design of heterojunction photocatalysts is crucial for enhancing CO 2 photoreduction efficiency, yet precisely channeling photogenerated electrons to the CO 2 adsorption sites remains an enormous challenge. In this work, we developed an organic-inorganic heterostructure with continuous inter- and intra-component electric fields. The integration of BiOBr with MIL-125 via chemical bonding established a heterojunction, where the built-in electric field between the two components facilitated the efficient transfer of photogenerated electrons from BiOBr to MIL-125. The intrinsic electric field of MIL-125 further drove the accumulation of photogenerated electrons at Ti sites. This tandem electric field effect, in conjunction with the CO 2 adsorption and activation at Ti sites, significantly enhanced the efficiency of CO 2 reduction within the heterojunction system. The optimized photocatalyst achieving CO production at a rate of 65.6 μmol g −1 h −1 with nearly 90 % selectivity without the use of sacrificial agents, exhibiting a remarkable 43-fold and 8-fold enhancement in activity compared to pristine MIL-125 and BiOBr, respectively. In-situ infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations confirmed the energy optimization effect of the heterostructure on CO 2 activation and the hydrogenation reaction, facilitating the formation of the key intermediate *COOH. This work elucidates the mechanism by which tandem built-in electric fields facilitate charge separation.

The photocatalytic destruction of contaminants in water, such as antibiotics and dyes, has emerged as a hot topic in environmental treatment. The 2D/2D BiOBr/(001)-TiO 2 S-scheme heterojunction , decorated with Pt, was fabricated through in-situ construction and photochemical deposition techniques and utilized to effectively eliminate tetracycline hydrochloride , rhodamine B , and methyl orange. 0.3 wt% has the highest degradation activity when exposed to visible light , and all TC-HCL degradation can be accomplished in 5 min. The photodegradation rate constants of BiOBr and BiOBr/(001)-TiO 2 are 15.3 and 6.3 times higher, respectively. Its satisfactory photocatalytic performance can be attributed to efficient interfacial charge separation, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect-induced broadening of the light absorption range, and enhanced migration and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, as well as the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction with strong redox ability. Meanwhile, the larger heterogeneous interface of 2D/2D nanostructures offers efficient charge transfer channels and more reactive sites. Experiments involving electron spin resonance (ESR) and free radical capture demonstrated the generation of not only h + and O 2 − , but also more potent OH radicals. Furthermore, an effective S-scheme heterojunction carrier migration and degradation pathway was proposed based on the experimental results. This study proposes a novel concept for the production of S-scheme heterojunctions photocatalysts that are effective for wastewater pollutant degradation.

Herein, we demonstrate a Mo/S co-doped BiOBr-based bimetal bismuth sulfur-oxybromide (Mo/S-BiOBr) catalyst with heterovalent molybdenum states and abundant oxygen vacancy defects for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHER) via a facile method. Mo/S co-doping adjusts the energy band structure of BiOBr and expands its visible light absorption. Hydrazine regulates the molybdenum with heterovalent states while endowing Mo/S-BiOBr with oxygen vacancy defects to balance the valence-charge deviations from electrical neutrality induced by Mo6+ → Mo4+. These oxygen-vacancy defects act as active sites for capturing water molecules and activating the H–O–H bond to produce protons for hydrogen generation. The heterovalent Mo6+/Mo4+ states act as photogenerated electron hosts to hop fast between Mo6+ and Mo4+, facilitating efficient electron transfer for the PHER. The hybridization between S 3p and O 2p orbitals improves the stability of continuous PHER. The hydrazine-regulated Mo/S-BiOBr-3 with an optimal n(Mo4+)/n(Mo4+ + Mo6+) ratio and abundant oxygen vacancy defects exhibit an excellent PHER activity of 710.5 μmol h−1 at a catalyst weight of 50 mg and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 13.9% at 420 nm. After six recycles, the H2 yield of Mo/S-BiOBr-3 decreased by only about 3.5%, indicating its good stability and durability. This work provides a practical approach to using bismuth-based oxyhalides in the PHER.
