2D/2D BiVO4/CsPbBr3 S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic CO2 reduction: Insights into structure regulation and Fermi level modulation

Xiaoyang Yue,Lei Cheng,Jiajie Fan,Quanjun Xiang

Heterojunction construction is a universal and effective approach to achieve high-efficiency photocatalysts. Towards these well-designed heterojunctions, modulation on steering dynamic charge transfer holds great promise in further performance stimulation. Herein, 2D/2D BiVO 4 /CsPbBr 3 S-scheme heterojunctions, of which CsPbBr 3 nanosheets (NSs) are in-situ face-to-face grown onto BiVO 4 NSs, are designed as cornerstones for further carrier managements. Briefly, with controllable heterostructure regulation, an intimate heterointerface between BiVO 4 and CsPbBr 3 NSs with similar size can be obtained accompanied with a maximally intensified interfacial interaction, largely boosting charge transfer across the interfacial conjunction. Moreover, by further tailoring the intrinsic O vacancy ( V O • • VO•• ) of BiVO 4 , the gradient Fermi level shift towards its valence band is finely tuned, yielding an enlarged Fermi level gap and an enhanced internal electric field (IEF) over BiVO 4 /CsPbBr 3 heterojunctions. Such an intensified IEF provides a powerful driving force for directional charge migration, resulting in high charge separation and utilization efficiency. Hence, the optimized BiVO 4 /CsPbBr 3 S-scheme heterojunction features desirable accelerated dynamic carrier mobility, delivering comparably high CO 2 -to-CO conversion with a turnover number (TON) near 230 without any co-catalyst or sacrificial agent. The accelerated S-scheme charge transfer mechanism is revealed in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), theoretical calculations, photo-irradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS).

BiVO4@PDA/TiO2/Ti photoanode with polydopamine as electron transfer mediator for efficient visible-light driven photocatalytic fuel cell

Yongqin Liu,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong,Haoyang Yao,Yundong Zeng,Nianbing Zhong,Han Luo

In order to enhance the electron transmission rate of photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC), BiVO 4 @PDA-wt% composite was successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and chemical polymerization method, and used to modify TiO 2 /Ti to obtain BiVO 4 @PDA/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode with high efficient visible light-response. The structure, morphology, optical and photoelectrochemical properties of BiVO 4 @PDA/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode were characterized and explored. BiVO 4 @PDA-10 %/TiO 2 /Ti obtained the maximum photocurrent density of 10.68 mA cm −2 at 1.0 V ( vs . SCE) under visible light illumination, which was 4.7 times that of BiVO 4 /TiO 2 /Ti. This is because of its extended π-conjugated electron system, PDA can significantly promote the charge transfer between BiVO 4 and TiO 2. Therefore, the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in space can be realized, thereby the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs can be reduced and ultimately the photocatalytic performance can be enhanced. With BiVO 4 @PDA-10 %/TiO 2 /Ti photoanode and Cu 2 O/Cu cathode, the visible-light responsive PFC exhibited high organics degradation and electricity conversion performance. Its photocurrent density, maximum power density and Rhodamine B degradation efficiency were 0.42 mA cm −2 , 58.55μW cm −2 and 97.28 %, respectively.

Enhanced optical absorption and pollutant adsorption for photocatalytic performance of three-dimensional porous cellulose aerogel with BiVO4 and PANI

Lele Wang,Shanshan Chen,Pengcheng Wu,Keliang Wu,Jianning Wu,Guihua Meng,Juan Hou,Zhiyong Liu,Xuhong Guo

This work demonstrates a double-step method, a simple chemical bath deposition and an in situ polymerization process, to synthesize the stable structure of a composite of Polyaniline/BiVO4/cellulose aerogel (PBC) in wastewater treatment. The poor stability of the carrier catalyst was improved significantly by forming a dense film of polyaniline (PANI) through polymerization on BiVO4/cellulose aerogel (BC). The developed three-dimensional porous structure enhanced photocatalytic stability. For instance, photocatalytic degradation of a dye, methylene blue, reached to 91.67% under the eight times successive irradiation of the visible light. The resulted fine performance could be owed to the strong adsorption of cellulose aerogel, uniform spreading of BiVO4, and the speedy electron separation efficiency of PBC. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanisms including the role of the free radicals (•OH and •O2−) of the developed PBC were also discussed. The novel structure may present a new insight into the development of the carrier catalyst.

Fangjie Han,Shulin Luo,Zhifang Wu,Zhishan Liang,Wenxin Yang,Dongxue Han,Zhonghui Sun,Zhenbang Liu,Li Niu

Antioxidant can protect body from free radical and dietary intake is a major source of antioxidants for human body. Therefore, it is particularly important to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of food and drink in daily diet. Herein, a label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on BiVO 4 @graphene oxide (GO) hybrid has been developed for antioxidants analysis and applied it to antioxidant capacity detection of real samples. Five representative antioxidants including ascorbic acid (AA), caffeic acid (CA), chlorogenic acid (CHA), fisetin (FT) and quercetin (QT) were determined by this PEC sensor to acquire photocurrent response at different concentrations. This PEC sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity and anti-interference. Furthermore, antioxidant capacity of food samples was assessed utilizing this PEC sensor, indicating the practicability and accuracy of this PEC sensor. This study suggests that BiVO 4 @GO composites constructed PEC sensor can provide a practical and fast method for detecting antioxidant capacity in the field of food.

Efficient degradation of imidacloprid in wastewater by a novel p-n heterogeneous Ag2O/BiVO4/diatomite composite under hydrogen peroxide

Jing Chen,Qifang Ren,Chunshan Xu,Bin Chen,Shaohua Chen,Yi Ding,Zhen Jin,Wanmi Guo,Xinyu Jia

In this study, Ag 2 O/BiVO 4 /diatomite composite with p-n heterojunction structure was synthesized by simple hydrothermal method with diatomite as carrier. It was found that under the action of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the imidacloprid (IMD) could be effectively degraded by the composite. Systemic evaluations was conducted on effects of pH value, catalyst dosage, H 2 O 2 concentration, initial IMD concentration, and anion on how effeciently this new photocatalytic composite can degrade IMD. The results show that the p-n heterojunction formed between the two contact surfaces of Ag 2 O nanoparticle and BiVO 4 promotes the charge transfer between the interfaces, inhibits recombination of electrons and holes, and thus significantly improves the catalytic performance. The stability and reusability of Ag 2 O/BiVO 4 /diatomite composites were tested with ICP experiment and cyclic experiment. Active substance capture experiment and ESR reveal the photocatalytic reaction mechanism and confirm that superoxide radical ( O 2 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH), and h + can promote the degradation of IMD. The degradation products and the intermediates of IMD were identified through LC-MS, on a basis of which the possible transformation pathway was proposed. In situ synthesis of p-type Ag 2 O and n-type BiVO 4 heterojunction composites has opened a new direction for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

A BiVO4 film photoanode with re-annealing treatment and 2D thin Ti3C2TX flakes decoration for enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Dejian Yan,Xingchen Fu,Zhichao Shang,Jikai Liu,He'an Luo

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) has been envisioned as a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, the PEC performance of BiVO 4 based photoanodes is usually dragged down by the poor charge transport and slow kinetics for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a novel composite photoanode of Ti 3 C 2 T X /BiVO 4 was fabricated for the first time by spin coating thin Ti 3 C 2 T X (MXene) flakes onto the surface of a BiVO 4 film grown on the FTO substrate. A facile re-annealing treatment of bare BiVO 4 /FTO photoanode in argon can impressively boost the photocurrent density from 2.1 mA cm −2 up to 2.95 mA cm −2 . Experimentally, we clearly elucidated that by re-annealing, the interfacial (BiVO 4 /FTO) charge recombination could be effectively suppressed due to the better contact between the BiVO 4 film and FTO. The coating of thin Ti 3 C 2 T X flakes onto the BiVO 4 film would further increase the photocurrent density to 3.45 mA cm −2 (measured at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under 1 sun illumination), exhibiting a photoconversion efficiency of 0.78% and a surface charge separation efficiency of 73%. The outstanding PEC performance can be mainly ascribed to the coating of the thin Ti 3 C 2 T X (MXene) flakes which function as co-catalysts, facilitating the charge transfer of the photogenerated carriers and reducing the charge recombination on the BiVO 4 surface. Our findings provide a facile re-annealing strategy and a novel two-dimensional (2D) material of Ti 3 C 2 T X (MXene) as co-catalysts to improve the performance of the BiVO 4 photoanode for PEC water oxidation.

Carbon dots sensitized 2D-2D heterojunction of BiVO4/Bi3TaO7 for visible light photocatalytic removal towards the broad-spectrum antibiotics

Shukun Le,Wenjing Li,Yuanjiang Wang,Xue Jiang,Xiaoxue Yang,Xiaojing Wang

Focused on the removal of the complicated residual antibiotic in aqueous environment, in this work, a novel carbon dots (C-dots) sensitized 2D-2D heterojunction of BiVO 4 /Bi 3 TaO 7 were assembled through a simple hydrothermal process. The characteristic by TEM, SEM, and XPS confirmed C-dots evenly anchored on the surface of BiVO 4 /Bi 3 TaO 7 heterojunction. The as-prepared C-dots/BiVO 4 /Bi 3 TaO 7 showed superior performance for the degradation of the various antibiotics under visible light illumination. When the concentration of C-dots in the composite is 3 wt.%, the photodegraded rates are obtained to be 91.7%, 89.3%, 87.1%, for tetracycline (TC), amoxicillin (AMX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), respectively, without significant deactivation during consecutive ten recycle experiments. Furthermore, by assessing the antibiotics mixture solution of TC, AMX and CIP, it is proposed that the prepared samples are potentially effective for the wastewater effluents. A probable mechanism was reasonably proposed. The improved photocatalytic activities could be attributed to the unique construction of the C-dots mediated heterojunction, which could expedite electron migration, improve light harvesting capacity and enhance charge separation efficiency. The present investigation may provide a new perspective to design C-dots mediated heterojunction which could be a potential visible-light-driven photocatalysts for the better practical applications in remediation of broad-spectrum antibiotic residues.

Junction of porous g-C3N4 with BiVO4 using Au as electron shuttle for cocatalyst-free robust photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Meiting Song,Yuhang Wu,Guopeng Zheng,Chunfang Du,Yiguo Su

Z -scheme g-C 3 N 4 /Au/BiVO 4 photocatalyst has been prepared successfully by assembling gold nanoparticles on the interface of super-thin porous g-C 3 N 4 and BiVO 4 , which exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance toward hydrogen evolution and durable stability in the absence of cocatalyst. The highest photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of g-C 3 N 4 /Au/BiVO 4 was about 410.0 μmol g −1  h −1 , which largely beyond that obtained of g-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 (23.3 μmol g −1  h −1 ), Au/g-C 3 N 4 (244.6 μmol g −1  h −1 ) and pristine g-C 3 N 4 (2.2 μmol g −1  h −1 ). The optimal apparent quantum efficiency was counted to be 6.8% at λ = 420 nm and 1.1% at λ = 600 nm. Moreover, the photocatalytic property of g-C 3 N 4 /Au/BiVO 4 could remain unchanged almost with 50 h in 5 cycles. The improvement of photocatalytic H 2 yield is attributed to the result of rapid separation of photogenic carriers in space and surface plasmon resonance effect of Au nanoparticles. In combination of photoelectrochemical measurement, active species capture experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, the underlying mechanism was illuminated. The pathway of charge carrier migration between semiconductor photocatalysts could be changed to Z-system through Au as an electron intermediate, which could not only benefit to maintain outstanding redox capability but also help to accelerate photo-generated carrier separation, and thus improve the photocatalytic activity .

Preparation of novel flower-like BiVO4/Bi2Ti2O7/Fe3O4 for simultaneous removal of tetracycline and Cu2+: Adsorption and photocatalytic mechanisms

Dadao Wang,Jian Li,Zhifeng Xu,Yeran Zhu,Guoxin Chen

To improve the visible light utilization and adsorption capacity for combined pollutants (Tetracycline and Cu 2+ ), novel flower-like BiVO 4 /Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 /Fe 3 O 4 composite has been successfully synthesized for the first time via a simple two-step process, surfactant-free hydrothermal route and solvothermal method . The crystal structures, chemical compositions , morphologies, optical and photocatalytic properties of the as-prepared samples were characterized by the techniques of XRD , XPS, SEM, HRTEM , BET, UV–vis DRS, and Photocurrent tests (PT). The synthetic sample with 4:1:20 (S5) mass ratio of BiVO 4 /Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 /Fe 3 O 4 possessed the highest adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance simultaneously in all of the as-prepared composites. Adsorption experiment (model 1 and model 2) suggested that there was not only competitive adsorption but also synergistic adsorption mechanisms between Cu 2+ and TC. Compared to pure BiVO 4 , and BiVO 4 /Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 , BiVO 4 /Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 /Fe 3 O 4 displayed more superior photodegradation efficiency with 97.22% removal of TC (10 mg/L) in 60 min, where the optimal conditions were catalyst dosage 1.00 g/L and initial pH at 6.0. In addition, radical trapping experiments revealed that the photo-induced active species superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) and holes (h + ) were the predominant active species in the photocatalytic system. These features demonstrate that the BiVO 4 /Bi 2 Ti 2 O 7 /Fe 3 O 4 has great application potential for combined pollutants’ removal from water.

Photocatalytic performance of multi-walled carbon nanotube/BiVO4 synthesized by electro-spinning process and its degradation mechanisms on oxytetracycline

Shengjun Ye,Xiao Zhou,Yanbin Xu,Weikang Lai,Kai Yan,Lu Huang,Jiayin Ling,Li Zheng

To enhance the photocatalytic performance of bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) and reveal its catalytic mechanism, a multi-walled carbon nanotube photocatalyst (MWCNT/BiVO 4 ) was prepared by sol-gel preparation and an electro-spinning process. Oxytetracycline was used as the target trace persistent pollutant to research its potential degradation pathways catalyzed by MWCNT/BiVO 4 . X-ray powder diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Raman spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and field emission transmission electron microscopy (FE-TEM) were used to observe the crystalline phase, morphological structure of MWCNT/BiVO 4 . The modification by MWCNTs caused changes of functional groups on the surface and a binding energy shift of Bi4f and V2p, as determined from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectometry (UV–Vis DRS) revealed that the band gap became narrower and photoluminescence spectra suggested the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs were inhibited after MWCNT modification. All of the characterizations showed enhancement of catalytic performance of MWCNT/BiVO 4 . The results from the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) indicated that the degradation rate of oxytetracycline had increased by 42.2% and reached 88.7% within 60 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals of ·OH and ·O 2 − were detected and potential photocatalytic mechanisms of the photocatalysts were put forward. Six reaction pathways were proposed based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–MS/MS) results: demethylation (−14 Da), secondary alcohol oxidation (−2 Da), dehydration (−18 Da), hydroxylation (+16 Da), decarbonylation (−28 Da) and deamination (−15 Da). The present study provides a reference for the application of photocatalytic degradation by MWCNT/BiVO 4 on hard degradable substances in aquatic environment.

Improved Photocurrents for Water Oxidation by Using Metal–Organic Framework Derived Hybrid Porous Co3O4@Carbon/BiVO4 as a Photoanode

Chun-Chao Hou,Ting-Ting Li,Yong Chen,Wen-Fu Fu

Graphical Don’t look beyond the surface! A highly porous Co 3 O 4 @carbon/BiVO 4 photoanode is obtained by a facile metal–organic framework templated synthesis route. This photoanode can effectively suppress interfacial electron–hole recombination for water oxidation (see figure). Efforts to improve the overall efficiency of photoelectrochemical water splitting by promoting interfacial charge transfer and suppressing electron–hole recombination remain a challenge. Highly porous Co 3 O 4 @carbon derived from metal–organic frameworks was successfully embedded on the surface of BiVO 4 nanosheets. The Co 3 O 4 @carbon/BiVO 4 composites were fully characterised by a variety of techniques, including powder XRD, diffuse reflectance UV/Vis spectroscopy, BET surface area calculations, SEM, TEM, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The construction of a heterojunction between porous Co 3 O 4 (p-Co 3 O 4 ) and BiVO 4 significantly promoted charge transfer and suppressed the recombination of holes and electrons. Consequently, the p-Co 3 O 4 @carbon/BiVO 4 photoanode demonstrated approximately tenfold higher photocurrent density relative to bare BiVO 4 and bulk Co 3 O 4 /BiVO 4 for water oxidation under the same conditions. Also, this system displayed good durability for water oxidation and could be recycled at least three times without any loss of catalytic activity.

Amorphous metal-organic frameworks loaded on BiVO4 photoanodes with unique internal metal-like structure for promoting photoelectrochemical water splitting

Weihao Bai,Hao Li,Gang Peng,Jinnan Wang,Aimin Li,Philippe François-Xavier Corvini

Although ferrocene (Fc) based Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) can act as oxygen evolution co-catalysts (OECs) for improvement of catalytic reactivity, the poor conductivity and lack of highly active metal sites limit its further application in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, the amorphous NiFc-MOF was grafted on BiVO 4 photoanode (BiVO 4 @ a NiFc-MOFs) for efficient PEC water splitting. This novel BiVO 4 @ a NiFc-MOFs exhibits high current density of 4.34 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE and relative low onset potential of 0.223 V RHE . The subsequent characterizations demonstrate that Ni species with metal-like state in bulk of a NiFc-MOFs form strong metal-support interaction with BiVO 4 , thereby promoting the interfacial charge transfer. Moreover, the surface of a NiFc-MOFs is short-range ordered with abundant coordinatively unsaturated Ni sites, creating a more favorable pathway for oxygen evolution reaction from thermodynamics. This work provides a simple method to design photoanodes with efficient OECs of amorphous MOFs for feasible PEC water splitting application.
