Electronically coupled Co single atoms with Co-Pd alloy catalyst for high-performance rechargeable hydrazine-assisted Zn−Air batteries

Ren Lijuan,Hu Xiuli,Wang Shuyu,Shi Jiaqi,Gong Jiaxing,Wang Manyun,Zhou Ji,Wang Jianzu,Lv Xian-Wei,Bielawski Christopher W.,Geng Jianxin

Zinc−air batteries are promising devices for use in safe and cost-effective energy storage applications. However, their practical utility is hindered by sluggish oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions. We show that hybridizing electronically coupled Co single atoms and a CoPd alloy within a three-dimensional macroporous N-doped carbon (CoPd/Co@3D NC) enables high-performance N 2 H 4 -assisted zinc−air batteries, where the oxygen evolution reaction is replaced with the thermodynamically more favorable hydrazine oxidation reaction. Experimental and theoretical data reveal that electronic coupling between the Co single atoms and the CoPd alloy mutually modifies their electronic structures, which, in turn, weakens oxygen adsorption on the Co single atoms and enhances N 2 H 4 adsorption on the Pd sites. The electronic-coupling effect accelerates the rate-limiting steps of the oxygen evolution and hydrazine oxidation reactions. Consequently, N 2 H 4 -assisted zinc−air batteries employing CoPd/Co@3D NC exhibit a small charging/discharging voltage gap of 0.52 V at 100 mA cm −2 , a peak specific power of 151 mW cm −2 , and a specific capacity of 810 mAh g −1 at 10 mA cm −2 ; these values are competitive when compared to those exhibited by conventional zinc−air batteries.

Band engineering of Sm/Co Co-doped BiFeO3 for enhanced pollutant degradation and hydrogen production via synergetic piezo-photocatalysis

Jinpeng Zhao,Zi'ang Liu,Suo Fu,Fazheng Wei,Xiaowei Chen,Danqing Liu,Weicheng Huang,Shaoqin Liu

A Sm/Co dual-doping strategy is introduced to the A and B sites of BiFeO 3 (BFO) perovskite structure to boost the synergetic piezo-photocatalytic performance for organic pollutant degradation and hydrogen production. The optimized doping ratio enables it to achieve the best balance between carrier concentration and piezoelectric response while regulating the energy band. The dual-doped sample Bi 0.9 Sm 0.1 Fe 0.8 Co 0.2 O 3 (BS 0.1 FC 0.2 O) exhibits the best piezo-photocatalytic performance, achieving a 90% RhB degradation efficiency in 60 min and hydrogen production rate of 1525 μmol g −1  h −1 . The coupling of Sm and Co co-doping in BFO effectively enhances the light harvesting and the piezoelectric polarization performance, which facilitate the generation and separation of electrons and holes. This work provides a paradigm for designing efficient piezo-photocatalysts with tailored band structures through bimetal co-doping strategies and demonstrates great potential for applications in environmental remediation and hydrogen production.

Ternary copolymers based on vinyl chloride-co-butyl acrylate-co-vinyl versatate with excellent elasticity, transparency and damping performance

Jiabo Wang,Changtong Song,Guochen Wang,Yutao Zhang,Xianhong Zhang,Wantai Yang

Synthesizing poly(vinyl chloride- co -butyl acrylate- co- vinyl versatate) ternary copolymer via suspension polymerzation • The ternary copolymer can achieve a damping temperature range of 15–65 °C and a high tan δ max around 1.15. • The ternary copolymer exhibites outstanding transparency and excellent elasticity. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based damping materials are extensively utilized in low-temperature vibration attenuation owing to their excellent processability, mechanical properties, and cost-effectiveness. However, achieving both a broad damping temperature range and high mechanical ductility remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, this study synthesized ternary copolymers of vinyl chloride (VC) with butyl acrylate (BA) and various vinyl carboxylate monomers such as vinyl acetate (VAc), vinyl neononanoate (VV9), and vinyl neodecanoate (VV10) via suspension free radical copolymerization, aiming to systematically investigate the influence of alkyl side chain length and bulkiness on damping performance. The damping properties, thermal stability, and mechanical behavior of the resulting copolymers were evaluated through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile testing. The remarkable results showed that the damping temperature range and loss factor are highly reliant on the content of BA and vinyl versatate structural units, as well as the side chain length of vinyl versatate. In detail, the PVC based ternary copolymers with 44% BA units and 7% VV10 units can achieve a damping temperature range of 15–65 °C and a high tan δ max around 1.15 at 1 Hz. While all copolymers maintained exceptional tensile strength about 20 MPa and ductility with an elongation at break exceeding 390%. Meanwhile, the damping materials with a vinyl versatate units either VV9 or VV10 exhibited a high transparency. This work provides a novel and effective strategy for designing high-performance PVC-based damping materials with an extended service temperature range and robust mechanical integrity. Scale like microsheet Co-V2O5@C preparation via synergistic V/Co coordination effect of terephthalic acid for water oxidation

Hongliang Fu,Wenyao Xue,Shaocong Zhan,Jing Zhao,Yue Lian,Zhifeng Wang,Yongfeng Hu,Huaihao Zhang

Metal active sites are anchored via the coordination effects between V/Co and terephthalic acid. • Co-doping constructs highly active Co-O-V catalytic sites, enhancing reaction activity. • PTA-derived oxygen-containing carbon layer mitigates metal site dissolution, improving stability. Developing highly active and stable catalysts for alkaline electrolytic water oxidation remains a challenge. Here, we prepared highly active, stable and conductive scale like microsheet Co-V 2 O 5 @C through Co-doping and coordination effect between terephthalic acid (PTA) and metal (V/Co). Specifically, Co-doping into V 2 O 5 lattice constructs highly active V-O-Co sites, thus reducing the adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. Meanwhile, the scale like microsheet Co-V 2 O 5 @C expose abundant active sites, enhancing oxygen evolution efficiency. The coordination effect between PTA and V/Co enables the in-situ formation of carbon layer on V 2 O 5 surface after carbonization, which effectively alleviates the dissolution of active sites and enhances stability. For conductive design, the Co introduction into V 2 O 5 can promote intrinsic conductivity. Moreover, under high-temperature carbonization, PTA evolves into oxygen-containing carbon layer, which boosts Co-V 2 O 5 @C overall conductivity and reaction kinetics. Based on above advantages, Co-V 2 O 5 @C displays good electrochemical performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (low overpotential: 290 mV@10 mA cm −2 ; long stability: 50 h; small charge transfer resistance: 11.7 Ω). Co/N co-doped porous carbon as a catalyst for the degradation of RhB by efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate

Yu Hongxia,Ding Dan,Zhao Shuailing,Faheem Muhammad,Mao Weijie,Yang Li,Chen Liwei,Cai Tianming

We report on the preparation of Co/N-NPC x/y with porous structure and excellent activation properties. The synthesis involves the preparation of Zn/Co-ZIF x and the carbonization of Zn/Co-ZIF x at a high temperature in an inert atmosphere. The volatilization of zinc during carbonization results in a porous structure, which is beneficial to the migration of pollutants. The sizes, specific surface areas, and pore size distribution of Co/N-NPC x/y can be achieved by tuning Zn/Co ratio. The calcination temperatures mainly affect the crystalline phase, crystallinity, and magnetic properties of the as-prepared materials. The effects of the as-prepared materials properties and activation conditions on the Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation by PMS activation were investigated. Overall, it exhibited superior catalytic activity in PMS activation, as evidenced by almost complete removal of RhB (0.020 mM, 100 mL) by using 5 mg/L Co/N-NPC 0.5/900 and 1.250 mM PMS within 30 min. Furthermore, it confirmed the participation of SO 4 •− , •OH, and 1 O 2 in the catalytic reaction, and both SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 were the main reactive oxygen species that play a major role.

Construction of N, O co-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles as efficient catalyst for furfural hydrodeoxygenation in ethanol

Hui Yang,Hao Chen,Wenhua Zhou,Haoan Fan,Chao Chen,Yixuan Sun,Jiaji Zhang,Sifan Wang,Teng Guo,Jie Fu

Hydrodeoxygenation of furfural (FF) into 2-methylfuran (MF) is a significant biomass utilization route. However, designing efficient and stable non-noble metal catalyst is still a huge challenge. Herein, we reported the N, O co-doped carbon anchored with Co nanoparticles (Co-SFB) synthesized by employing the organic ligands with the target heteroatoms. Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations showed that the co-doping of N and O heteroatoms in the carbon support endows Co-SFB with enriched lone pair electrons, fast electron transfer ability, and strong metal-support interaction. These electronic properties resulted in strong FF adsorption as well as lower apparent reaction activation energy. At last, the obtained N, O co-doped Co/C catalyst showed excellent catalytic activity (nearly 100 mol% FF conversion and 94.6 mol% MF yield) and stability for in-situ dehydrogenation of FF into MF. This N, O co-doping strategy for the synthesis of highly efficient catalytic materials with controllable electronic state will provide an excellent opportunity to better understand the structure–function relationship.

Norfloxacin co-amorphous salt systems: Effects of molecular descriptors on the formation and physical stability of co-amorphous systems

Yuehua Deng,Wenhao Deng,Wenquan Huang,Zhiyong Zheng,Rui Zhang,Shiyuan Liu,Yanbin Jiang

Amorphization technology has been a promising strategy to improve the solubility and dissolution of drugs. This study aims to prepare norfloxacin (NFX) co-amorphous (CA) systems and evaluate the association between molecular descriptors and the formation and physical stability of NFX CAs. The molecular miscibility between NFX and 17 co-former candidates was firstly predicted using Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) and six NFX CAs were successfully prepared by dry ball mill. Compared with crystalline NFX, four NFX CAs showed enhanced solubility (up to 2.50-fold) and dissolution rates. NFX CAs exhibited excellent physical stability under dry conditions. According to the quantitative calculations of Pearson correlation coefficient and Ridge regression, molecular descriptors have a great effect on NFX CA formation with structural parameters (Weight, VDW_vol, VDW_area, Rings) stronger than miscibility parameter Δ δ ¯ and p K a. These molecular descriptors corresponding to π···π interactions, molecular miscibility and ionic interactions are also responsible for physical stability. The results demonstrate that NFX CA can be stably formed if the co-former has more rings, smaller Δ δ ¯ (less than or close to 5 MPa 0.5 ) and larger Δp K a. This study offers a potential strategy to screen and design a CA system using multivariate data analysis based on theoretical considerations of molecular descriptors.

Spatial decoupling of dehydrogenation and CO oxidation by Ni-Co-Ti hierarchical trimetallic catalyst for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol

Shenghao Zhao,Tianqi Wang,Zhijiao Ji,Yajun Song,Yi Li,Jia Liu,Wenping Hu

Methanol electro-oxidation reaction (MOR) is the kernel of methanol fuel cell. When the multi-step microscopic transformations process of MOR couples and occurs on the same active site, undoubtedly it reduces the probability of reaction and increases the steric hindrance, resulting in slow reaction kinetics and degradation of catalytic performance. In order to decouple the dehydrogenation and CO oxidation in MOR, herein we synthesized the hierarchical catalyst (NiCo/N-TiO 2 @NaOH) with bifunctional spatial distribution, which displayed 73 mA cm −2 at the potential of 1.5 V (vs. RHE) and only 20 % degradation of performance after continuously electrolysis over 40,000 s. Based on analysis of mass transfer and electron transport in hierarchical structure, combining with in-situ mass spectrometry and theory calculation, the high MOR performance of NiCo/N-TiO 2 can be ascribed to the spatial decoupling the MOR reactions including dehydrogenation under synergic effect of Ni/Co and CO oxidation on N-TiO 2 film.

Co-Co LDH-derived CoSe2 anchored on N-doped carbon nanospheres as high-performance anodes for sodium-ion batteries

Qifeng Lin,Zeyu Yuan,Dongyi Wang,Wei Wei,Xibin Wang,Wei Han,Lili Wang

The growing problem of limited lithium resource reserves has resulted in increased attention and a corresponding surge in sodium-ion battery (SIB) research. However, SIBs have disadvantages, such as a short cycle life and low energy density. The lack of high capacity and long-cycle stability anode materials are important factors hindering the development of SIBs. In this study, hollow carbon nanospheres were nitrogen-doped, and the zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 was used as a precursor to synthesize cobalt-based layered double hydroxide using the hydrothermal method followed by synthesizing an NHCNS@CoSe 2 @C complex using calcination and carbon coating. In this design concept, the hollow-cavity structure of the carbon nanospheres provided shorter electron diffusion paths and increased stability; the introduction of nitrogen increased the number of defect sites and charge density of the porous carbon materials, which, with the transition metal selenide, enhanced the conductivity of the final product. The resulting carbon-supported anode material, NHCNS@CoSe 2 @C, had an initial stable discharge capacity of 465.6 mAh g   −   1 at a current density of 0.1 A g   −   1 and maintained a high capacity of 373.8 mAh g   −   1 after 100 cycles. Moreover, it exhibited a high rate performance of 285.6 mAh g   −   1 at a current density of 5 A g   −   1 .

Co-CoF2 heterojunctions encapsulated in N, F co-doped porous carbon as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for Zn-air batteries

Yanwei Zhu,Lang Gan,Jianqiao Shi,Gen Huang,Hongmei Gao,Li Tao,Shuangyin Wang

The structural design and atomic adjustment of the catalyst are the main factors that regulate the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a novel and facile strategy of synthesizing three-dimensional porous carbon network by polymer-assisted molding strategy. The porous carbon framework with Co-CoF 2 and carbon nanotubes (PCF@CCFCNT) was directly obtained by the calcination, in which Co-CoF 2 heterojunctions uniformly dispersed in the interconnected holes. Benefiting from the special hierarchical porous morphology, the dual-function catalytic activity of Co-CoF 2 heterojunctions and existence of Co-N x species, the as-obtained PCF@CCFCNT composites exhibit excellent performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (η = 300 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), as well as outstanding oxygen reduction reaction performance in alkaline medium (E 1/2  = 0.852 V, vs RHE). Moreover, as an air electrode in Zn-air batteries (ZABs), PCF@CCFCNT demonstrates a large peak power density of 184 mW cm −2 and superior long-term stability, which is much more stable than the one consisting of commercial Pt/C. This finding not only shows a simple composite design to achieve high-performance ZABs but also may stimulate the rapid development of 3D hierarchical porous electrocatalysts for advanced energy technologies.

The role of Co-ZrO2 interfacial sites in promoting catalytic performance of Co/SiC catalyst for Fischer−Tropsch synthesis

Min Wang,Shupeng Guo,Ming Xia,Jungang Wang,Zhongyi Ma,Bo Hou,Litao Jia,Debao Li

Whether Co-ZrO 2 interfacial sites have a beneficial effect on Co-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is still controversial. In this paper, different quantities of Co-ZrO 2 interfacial sites were fabricated by changing the impregnation sequence of Zr added to Co/SiC catalysts. The effect of the Co-ZrO 2 interfacial sites was investigated by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrogen chemisorption (H 2 -TPD), temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and TEM-EDS- mapping analyses. It was found that when zirconium was on the surface of cobalt, more Co-ZrO 2 interfacial sites were formed, and a higher selectivity of long-chain hydrocarbons was observed. In addition, the formation of Co-ZrO 2 interfacial sites significantly increased the conversion frequency of CO. This work is of great significance for understanding the role of Co-ZrO 2 interfacial sites and guiding the design of related catalysts in Co-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Modulating the >Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycling via confinement of cobalt with WS2 for the ultrafast sulfite activation

Xiaodan Zhao,Jiahui Wei,Ying Wu,Zuoming Zhou,Guohua Jing

Sulfite autoxidation in combination with the cobalt-based heterogeneous activators, has recently emerged as the efficient sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ) generation process for organic micropollutant abatement in the water and wastewater treatment , yet the sluggish >Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycling currently compromises the efficacy of radical generation and the potential applications. Herein, regarding that the reductive W(IV) species in WS 2 can modulate the >Co(II)/Co(III) redox cycling in the advanced oxidation processes , confinement of cobalt with WS 2 (Co-WS 2 ) is designed and characterized. The Co-WS 2 /sulfite process achieves an ultrafast tetracycline (TC) abatement (∼100 % abatement of TC within 1 min) under circumneutral conditions with lower dosage of sulfite and activator, outperforming the current cobalt-based heterogeneous counterparts. The dominant reactive radicals are identified as SO 4 •− and hydroxyl radical (HO • ), which are quantified to be 9.7 μM and 4.5 μM, respectively. The superior radical generation efficiency and the concomitant TC abatement rely on the excellent redox properties and electron transfer capability of Co-WS 2 . The inter-transformation of >Co(II)/>Co(III) can be accelerated via the involvement of the reductive W(IV) species with the redox-reversibility of the W(IV)/W(VI) couple in the presence of sulfite. The TC degradation intermediates and the corresponding pathways are also proposed according to the ultra-performance liquid chromatography and quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) analysis. In addition, the influences of the reactant dosage, coexisting anions (HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− , Cl − and NO 3 − ), humic acid and the various real water matrices on TC abatement are thoroughly explored. Especially, the Co-WS 2 /sulfite process is advantageous owing to the negligible effect of the coexisting anions on the TC abatement. This study provides a novel heterogeneous activator for significantly improving sulfite activation efficacy to achieve the efficient organic micropollutant abatement.
