Self-separating core-shell spheres with a carboxymethyl chitosan/acrylic acid/Fe3O4 composite core for soil Cd removal

Tian Hu,Bu-Ning Liu,Huaitian Bu,Han-Jian Hu,Qi-Shun Zhu,Shipeng Tang,Yongtao Li,Jinjin Wang,Gang-Biao Jiang

Cadmium (Cd) removal from soil is crucial as Cd enters the food chain and affect food safety, thus impose severe threaten to human health. We developed PPC@PC-Fe, a dual-functional core-shell sphere for efficient soil Cd reduction. The shell (PPC) was composed of encapsulated citric acid (CA) in a polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) network, which endows a function of activating Cd; and the core (PC-Fe) consisted of a polyacrylic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan (PAA/CMC) hydrogel with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to adsorb adjacent activated Cd. Upon water contact, the shell dissolved, releasing CA to activate soil Cd. Simultaneously, the swellable PC-Fe core absorbed water and expanded in size, promoting the disintegration of PLA in the shell, which triggered the automatic separation of core from shell, enabling the exposed PC-Fe core to rapidly adsorb Cd. Furthermore, the PC-Fe core can be magnetically removed after adsorption of Cd. Soil culture tests showed that 2 % PPC@PC-Fe reduced soil Cd from 6.009 mg/kg to 4.834 mg/kg in 10 days, with the acid-soluble Cd being the predominantly target to be activated and remove. This study demonstrates an effective stepwise activation and adsorption mechanism by a single carrier, with simple magnetic collection minimizing secondary pollution. It offers an innovative approach to the remediation of cadmium-contaminated sites in the field.

Ultrasonic-assisted encapsulation of lemongrass essential oil in HP-β-CD: Optimization, characterization, and application for mango preservation

Yuexin Pan,Wenhao Zhang,Wanzhou Yang,Zhiyuan Tai,Xia Liu,Jia Ran,Xiaodong Yu,Qiyi He

Mangoes are highly susceptible to post-harvest spoilage, leading to significant losses. This study aimed to optimize the encapsulation of lemongrass essential oil (LEO) using ultrasonic-assisted hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and response surface methodology (RSM). The ultrasonic-assisted inclusion complex (UIC) was characterized through various techniques including particle size analysis, SEM, UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, and TGA. The antibacterial activity of the UIC was evaluated, and its effectiveness in prolonging mango shelf life was assessed by monitoring parameters such as weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), malondialdehyde (MDA), vitamin C (VC) content, and external appearance. The results indicated that ultrasonic-assisted encapsulation significantly improved the encapsulation efficiency (EE), with optimal conditions of a core-wall ratio of 9:1, ultrasonic power of 150 W, and temperature of 36 °C. The UIC exhibited sustained release of LEO and enhanced antimicrobial activity, resulting in significant reductions in weight loss, firmness degradation, and metabolic changes during mango storage. Treated mangoes also showed improved appearance, with delayed onset of black spots and browning. These findings suggest that ultrasonic-assisted HP-β-CD encapsulation of LEO is an effective, eco-friendly strategy for postharvest preservation of mangoes, offering substantial potential for extending shelf life and maintaining fruit quality.

Detection of carbendazim with SA-AgNPs-CD functionalized silver nanoparticles as substrates based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Chen Yufeng,Li Yutong

A novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate was developed to determination of the pesticide carbendazim (CBZ) through the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (SA-AgNPs-CD) using sodium alginate as a reducing agent and α-cyclodextrin as a molecular recognition stabilizer. The composite material was systematically characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–vis spectroscopy. The analysis revealed spherical nanoparticles with an average diameter of approximately 59 nm and localized surface plasmon resonance at 412 nm. 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) was used as a SERS probe to discuss the SERS activity of the substrate and multivariate optimization of detection parameters (substrate–analyte ratio 3:1, pH 6.8, 15 min adsorption, and sequential reagent addition) via orthogonal experimental design. The linear response which extends from 5.0 × 10 −5 to 1.0 × 10 −7  mol/L for CBZ combined with principal component analysis (PCA) revealed an ideal linear relationship between CBZ concentration and principal component F 1 , achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.95 × 10 −9  mol/L. It is expected that this SERS strategy will provide great value for rapid detecting pesticide residues in fruits and food products.

A synergistic strategy for efficient Li+/Mg2+ separation based on γ-CD cavity regulation and histidine electrostatic repulsion

Yinghong Wang,Ping Xiong,Wei Yang,Zhitong Zhang,Xiaoling Xu,Liming Yang,Huiji Xiao,Kai Zhang,Zhenzhou Wang,Wei Zhang,Xubiao Luo

Highly selective Mg 2+ /Li + separation membranes hold significant application prospects in extraction of lithium. However, the high Mg 2+ /Li + concentration ratio commonly found in brines and the very close hydrated ionic radii of the two ions limit the separation efficiency of conventional membranes. This study proposes a dual-phase supramolecular synergistic sieving nanofiltration membrane design strategy. Leveraging the unique molecular recognition unit and hydrophilic external interface characteristics of γ -cyclodextrin ( γ -CD), combined with the multifunctional positively charged groups of histidine, the strategy achieves the directional construction of highly efficient Mg 2+ /Li + sieving channels within the membrane. The strategy is accomplished through the synergistic action of γ -CD’s selective capture of high-valent Mg 2 + and histidine’s electrostatic repulsion effect. During the Mg 2 + /Li + separation process, the fabricated γ -CD-histidine composite membrane (HCF membrane) demonstrates outstanding comprehensive performance. It achieves a remarkably high Li + /Mg 2+ separation factor of 28.98 and maintains excellent separation performance across a wide Mg 2+ /Li + ratio range (1:1–100:1). The enhanced hydrophilicity of the HCF membrane significantly boosts permeate flux, while also exhibiting long-term operational stability and biofouling resistance during continuous operation under high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. This research enables the high-selectivity separation of Mg 2+ and Li + with concurrent Li + enrichment, demonstrating significant potential for lithium extraction from salt-lake.

Fabrication of UL-AuAgMSs@β-CD Composite Substrate for Synergistically Enhanced SERS Trace Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticide Residues

Wen Teng,Haipei Xu,Shun Wen,Xiang Yu,Yanrong Yang,Jing Zhang

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) seriously threaten human health and ecosystems due to their environmental persistence, creating an urgent demand for highly efficient and sensitive detection technologies in environmental monitoring. UL-AuAgMSs@β-CD composite substrate was fabricated through the integration of urchin-like Au-Ag microspheres (UL-AuAgMSs) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to overcome three persistent challenges in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection, i.e., low molecular selectivity, substrate instability, and complex matrix interference. Optimizing the three-dimensional branched structure of UL-AuAgMSs through controlled silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) addition, a dual enhancement becomes available from both electromagnetic effects (nanotip-localized hotspots) and chemical effects (β-CD's molecular recognition capabilities). The composite substrate presented superior performances, a detection limit of 10⁻ 13 M for crystal violet (CV), excellent reproducibility (RSD = 9.10%, n = 13), and long-term stability (73.35% signal retention after 21 days), surpassing conventional single-metal substrates. Its versatility is further demonstrated in detecting methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), the OPP chlorpyrifos (CPF), and the pesticide intermediate 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP). This study proposes a synergistic strategy combining morphological engineering and molecular recognition. It offers a stable and adaptable SERS platform for rapid trace pollutant monitoring in food safety and complex environments.

Sensitive and Facile Detection of Aloin via N,F-CD-Coated Test Strips Coupled with a Miniaturized Fluorimeter

Guo Wei,Chuanliang Wang,Rui Wang,Peng Zhang,Xuhui Geng,Jinhua Li,Abbas Ostovan,Lingxin Chen,Zhihua Song

Aloin, a kind of active phenolic component, is sourced fromAloe vera. Recently, the determination of aloin has received enormous attention, owing to its positive performance (including anti-tumor, antibacterial, detoxification, liver protection, anti-stomach damage, and skin protection activities) and painful side effects (increased carcinogenicity caused by excessive use of aloin) impacting human health. This investigation was inspired by the good fluorescence properties of carbon dots (CDs); CD-based sensors have aroused a great deal of interest due to their excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Thus, it is of great significance to develop novel CD-based sensors for aloin determination. Herein, N,F-CDs were designed and synthesized through a convenient hydrothermal strategy; the synthesized N,F-CDs possessed good fluorescence performance and a small particle size (near 4.3 nm), which demonstrated the successful preparation of N,F-CDs. The resulting N,F-CDs possessed a large Stokes shift and could emit a highly stable green fluorescence. The fluorescence of the N,F-CDs could be effectively quenched by aloin through the inner filter effect. Furthermore, the synthesis procedure was easy to operate. Finally, the N,F-CD-coated test strips were fabricated and combined with a miniaturized fluorimeter for the fluorescence detection of aloin via the inner filter effect for the first time. The N,F-CD-coated test strips were fabricated and used for the fluorescence sensing of aloin, and the results were compared with a typical ultraviolet (UV) method. The N,F-CD-coated test strips exhibited high recovery (96.9~106.1%) and sensitivity (31.8 nM, n = 3), good selectivity, low sample consumption (1 μL), high speed (5 min), good stability, and anti-interference properties. The results indicate that N,F-CD-coated test strips are applicable for the quantitative determination of aloin in bovine serum, orange juice, and urine samples.

Drying Induces Different Effects on the Selective Adsorption of Cd(II) and Zn(II) on Ferrihydrite and Kaolinite

Shiqin Long,Qingze Chen,Hongyan Wei,Jing Liu,Shoushu Wei,Yixuan Yang,Hongbo Li,Runliang Zhu,Hongping He

Soil minerals are important natural adsorbents that regulate heavy metal fate; yet, the influence of natural drying on their adsorption behavior remains poorly understood. This study compared how drying affects Cd(II) and Zn(II) retention and selectivity on two widespread soil minerals, ferrihydrite (Fhy) and kaolinite (Kln), using single/binary adsorption experiments. Results indicated that drying significantly enhanced Cd(II) and Zn(II) retention on Fhy by promoting inner-sphere complexation and enhancing the stability of metal-mineral bonds, as evidenced by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy analyses. In contrast, the effect on Kln was less pronounced, with Cd(II) and Zn(II) predominantly adsorbed via electrostatic interactions and drying having a minimal impact. Crucially, drying induced contrasting selectivity changes: it enhanced the selective adsorption of Zn(II) on Kln while favoring Cd(II) selectivity on Fhy. Density functional theory (DFT) computations corroborated this finding, showing lower adsorption energies for Cd(II) than for Zn(II) on Fhy, with the reverse trend observed on Kln. This preferential adsorption of Cd(II) on Fhy and Zn(II) on Kln after drying was attributed to the drying process facilitating the formation of more stable bonds between metal ions and mineral surfaces. These findings establish a theoretical framework for predicting the fate of metals in dehydration-affected soils and contribute to a systematic understanding of the environmental functionality of soil minerals.

Cd vacancies and Pt-Pd single atoms induced symmetry breaking in CdS for efficient piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Haoqiang Feng,Yike Li,Xian Liu,Kang Wang,Qianhao Du,Yingju Wang,Zhongjun Li

Developing efficient piezo-photocatalysts through integrating cation vacancies with double metal single atoms is vitally important for hydrogen production, while it remains a challenge. In this work, cadmium vacancy (V Cd ) as well as Pt and Pd single atoms (Pt-Pd) were simultaneously introduced into CdS to construct V Cd -CdS/Pt-Pd catalysts for piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In-depth characterizations and DFT calculations confirmed that the symmetry breaking caused by V Cd , Pt-Pd dual single atoms and ultrasonic could induce the polarization enhancement and charge asymmetric distribution, modulate the density of electronic states as well as optimize the adsorption of H* intermediates. Under light and ultrasound, the optimal V Cd -CdS/Pt 0.20 -Pd 0.30 achieved the piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 104.4 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 10.0 and 30.7 times that of V Cd -CdS and CdS, respectively. The significant improvement of piezo-photocatalytic performance was due to the synergistic interaction of V Cd -CdS, Pt-Pd double single atoms and the ultrasonic-induced external stress, which enhanced the polarized electric field in V Cd -CdS/Pt-Pd and promoted the separation and transfer of photo-generated charges. Moreover, the piezoelectric polarization induced by ultrasonic could tilt the energy band and produce a stronger reduction potential, also facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction. On the whole, the symmetry breaking achieved by structure modifications coupled with external stress effectively boosted the piezo-photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, which provided a reference for the design of high-efficiency piezo-photocatalysts based on vacancy engineering and double single atoms doping.

Interfacial lattice relaxation and S-Zn charge channel engineering in Cd₀.₉Zn₀.₁S/ZnWO₄ S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts

Zeshuang Kong,Dafeng Zhang,Junchang Liu,Xue-Yang Ji,Peiqing Cai,Xipeng Pu,Huayang Zhang

In the S-scheme heterojunction, photogenerated electrons from the oxidation photocatalyst recombine with holes from the reduction photocatalyst, enhancing redox potential and boosting photocatalytic activity. However, the recombination mechanism at these interfaces remains largely unexplored. In this study, we design a Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 S/ZnWO 4 (CZS/ZWO) S-scheme heterojunction model guided by theoretical predictions. Remarkably, a nano-tetrapod-shaped CZS/ZWO S-scheme heterojunction is synthesized via a simple solvothermal and ultrasonic self-assembly method, achieving hydrogen evolution performance under visible light irradiation for 3 h that is 3.69 times higher than CZS alone and 4.63 times higher than ZWO alone. Further theoretical calculations simulate the charge transfer mechanism, electron density localization, and transition states in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. Finally, integrating theoretical and experimental data, an S-Zn channel is proposed within the CZS/ZWO S-scheme heterojunction, clarifying the electron transfer pathway. This study provides a detailed understanding of charge transfer dynamics in S-scheme heterojunction.

Rapid Preparation of a Self-Luminous Cd-Based Metal–Organic Framework Using AIEgen Ligands for High-Performance Electrochemiluminescence

Huanhuan Xing,Sipeng Tian,Zihan Zhou,Zihang Zhang,Chunmei Zhang,Shan Zhang,Jian Lin,Chunxian Guo,Erkang Wang,Jing Li

The design and synthesis of high-efficiency electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters hold great promise for a wide range of analytical applications. In this study, we developed a rapid and straightforward strategy to fabricate a self-luminous Cd-based metal–organic framework (Cd-MOF) using individual aggregation-induced emission ligands, specifically 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)ethane (TPPE), within a few seconds. The rigid and directionally enriched metal node of Cd, along with the organic ligands, is formed within the Cd-MOF via coordination, effectively constraining the intramolecular free motions of TPPE and suppressing nonradiative relaxation. Additionally, the unique porous structure combined with the catalytic activity resulting from the incorporation of Cd2+, endow the Cd-MOF with 90-fold ECL enhancement compared to individual TPPE as more chromophores are electro-excited and more coreactants are catalyzed to produce luminescence. The as-made Cd-MOF amplifies the ECL performance by integrating ECL emitters and coreactant accelerators into a single entity, simplifying the sensing process. Leveraging the excellent ECL performance, we constructed a sensitive ECL sensor for hydroquinone based on competitive reactions, with a wide linear range from 200 nM to 1 mM and a satisfying detection limit as low as 80 nM.

rGO/MWCNT-COOH-Modified Electrodes for the Detection of Trace Cd(II) and Zn(II) in Coastal Seawater

Yang Gu,Chengjun Qiu,Wei Qu,Wei Tao,Zizi Zhao,Huili Hao

Cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in seawater enter the human body through the food chain. Combined toxicity tests indicated that high concentrations of Cd(II) and low concentrations of Zn(II) had a synergistic effect on humans. Thus, there is an urgent need to prepare a sensor for rapid and simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Zn(II) in seawater. Herein, a reduced graphene oxide/carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (rGO/MWCNT-COOH)-modified glassy carbon electrode was prepared in the experiments using the dropping method. The synthesis of various materials achieved the purpose of expanding the surface area, and scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the structure of the composite membrane. Moreover, the large number of functional groups on the surface of the composite membrane can also increase the adsorption of ions. For the determination of trace cadmium (II) and zinc (II) in seawater, the method used was differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results show that the peak current, which was obtained in the range of 5–400 μg/L for Cd(II) and Zn(II), has a linear relationship with concentration, corresponding to the detection limits of 0.8 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.98 μg/L for Zn(II). The modified electrode was used to determine the Cd(II) and Zn(II) content in the coastal seawater of the Maowei Sea, and the recovery rate was between 95.8 and 98.2% for Cd(II) and 96.7~99.4% for Zn(II), which provided a novel approach of detection to define trace Cd(II) and Zn(II) in seawater.

Wei Zhao,Yuxiang Yang,Yanbin Li,Yimin Liu,Yuezhou Wei,Xinpeng Wang,Deqian Zeng

The advancement of efficient photocatalysts is essential for tackling global energy and environmental issues. In this work, a unique sheet-on-sheet Cd(OH)2/CdS photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solution strategy, demonstrating significantly improved photocatalytic performance for H2 generation and Cr(VI) reduction. The optimal 5% Cd(OH)2/CdS obtained an impressive H2 production rate of 3475 μmol·g-1·h-1 under visible light, marking a 6.3 times increase compared to CdS. Additionally, the kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction were markedly accelerated, with a rate constant of 0.2803 min-1, representing a 5.7 times improvement over pure CdS. Moreover, the 2D/2D Cd(OH)2/CdS photocatalyst exhibited exceptional stability, maintaining high photocatalytic activity over multiple reaction cycles. Experimental findings and DFT calculations revealed the charge transfer mechanism between CdS nanosheets and Cd(OH)2 cocatalyst. This work provides insights into designing high-performance CdS-based nanophotocatalysts for water splitting and environmental remediation.
