Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials have attracted considerable attention in the field of photocatalysis due to the high interfacial charge separation efficiency and abundant surface active sites. Herein, we have fabricated 2D/2D sheets of Ni2P/CdS heterostructure for photocatalytic H2 evolution. The microscopic and photocatalytic activity results suggested that Ni2P nanosheets were coupled with snowflake CdS. The optimal hydrogen production rate reached 58.33 mmol h−1 g−1 (QE = 34.38%, λ = 420 nm) over 5 wt% Ni2P, which is equivalent to that of 1 wt% Pt/CdS. Compared with pure CdS, Ni2P/CdS presented lower fluorescence intensity and stronger photocurrent density, which demonstrated that the 2D/2D Ni2P/CdS heterojunction photocatalyst significantly improved the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. The excellent performance of Ni2P/CdS clearly indicated that Ni2P was an excellent cocatalyst and could provide abundant active sites for hydrogen evolution.

The novel Z-scheme CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterostructure was successfully synthesized by a simple mixed-solvent thermal method. It proved that the Z-scheme CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction was constructed by XRD , SEM, TEM and XPS. The synthesis of CdS nanospheres on ultra-thin Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 nanosheets to form a heterojunction interface was beneficial to the dispersion and transfer of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, which was demonstrated by PL , i-t and EIS. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra attested CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction enhanced utilization of visible light. The Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance for degradation process of CIP and TC than that of pure CdS and Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 . In addition, recycling tests declared that the Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction compared with single CdS had higher stability and durability, attributing to effectively alleviating photocorrosion of CdS. It could be seen from the trapping agent experiment that superoxide free radicals and hydroxyl free radicals were the main active substances. The possible photocatalytic mechanism of the Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 heterojunction under visible light irradiation was proposed.

Nitridation of CoWO4/CdS nanocomposite results in the formation of metal nitrides on the surface of CdS. The high electrical conductivity, appropriate binding energy for hydrogen, and Pt-like properties of the surface nitrides promote the H2 evolution performance. Therefore, the optimal performance of nitrided CoWO4/CdS (CoWO4/CdS-N, 3650 μmol·h–1·g–1) is higher than that of Pt/CdS (2948 μmol·h–1·g–1).

Catechol (CC) exists a potential threat to human psychology and physiology. In this research, a novel ultra-sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor was established to detect CC based on carbon dots (CDs) and metal organic framework (HKUST-1) synergy system. The results showed good large specific surface area of HKUST-1 on CDs which could effectively improve the sensitivity of sensor. Under the optimal conditions, the as-fabricated sensor illustrated a wide linear range of 5.0 × 10 −9 –2.5 × 10 −5 mol/L with the detection limit of 3.8 × 10 −9 mol/L(S/N = 3). In addition, owning to its good reproducibility and stability, the sensor had been successfully applied to the actual sample. This work provides an important reference for the application of metal organic framework materials (MOFs) in ECL researches and a novel method for detecting catechol.

In this work, CdS thin films were deposited on glass/fluorine-doping tin oxide (FTO) substrates by low-cost chemical bath deposition (CBD), followed by annealing with CdCl 2 -doping (Cl-doping) to fabricate resistive-type photodetectors (PDs) with a vertical structure of glass/FTO/CBD-CdS:Cl/electrode. The effect of annealing with Cl-doping (AwCl) on the various properties of films and the photodetection performance of PDs were systematically characterized by special testing methods. The results revealed that the surface morphology and crystal structure of CBD-CdS:Cl films were improved, accompanied by an enhancement of hexagonal phase (002) crystal plane (wurtzite structure), and the optical bandgap of films can be adjusted between 2.43 and 2.26 eV while the electron activation energy of the films was reduced from 75.9 to 10.3 meV after AwCl. Furthermore, the light responsivity of CBD-CdS:Cl PDs were 0.57, 0.59 and 1.67 A/W under 365, 400 and 530 nm illumination at a bias of −2.0 V, respectively, and the detectivity of photons at corresponding wavelengths were 3.7 × 10 8 , 3.9 × 10 8 and 1.08 × 10 9 Jones. Meanwhile, the PDs showed optimized repeatability and improved sensitivity under periodic illumination. The above results demonstrated that the CBD-CdS:Cl PDs with a vertical structure developed in this work had good detection performance at certain characteristic wavelengths.

Ligand-induced chirality in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals attracts attention because of their tunable chiroptical properties. Here, the induced chirality and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are investigated as a function of the CdS shell growth in a range of 2D CdSe/CdS nanoplatelets (NPLs) capped with chiral ligands. Five samples of CdSe/CdS NPLs are synthesized by a one-pot approach to vary the island-like shell on a four-monolayer (4 ML) CdSe NPLs core, which effectively reduces the interfacial strain energy. The successful preparation of L-/D-Cysteine-capped CdSe/CdS NPLs with both tunable circular dichroism (CD) and CPL behaviors and a maximum anisotropic luminance factor ( g lum ) of 5.29 × 10 −4 is described. The induced chiroptical response shows a direct relationship with the formation of island-like shell in the first and second stages and shows a clear signal evolution. In the third stage with a full coating shell, the CD and CPL signals are inversely proportional to the CdS shell thickness. The island-like shell gives birth to the CPL signal, while the formation of full coating shell decreases the induced chirality. Such chiral and emissive NPLs provide an ideal platform for the rational design of semiconductor nanocrystals with chiroptical properties in areas of biomedicine, polarizers, and new generation of display devices.

A novel CdS nanoparticles/hollow hydroxyapatite microsphere (CdS/HAP) photocatalysts, with excellent photocatalytic performance, was firstly prepared by using a facile hydrothermal method under low temperature. The CdS/HAP composite catalysts were explored by various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer Emmett-Teller (BET) and photoelectrochemical measurements. The photocatalytic ability of the as-prepared composite catalysts was investigated by using tetracycline (TC) as a model contaminant. Compared to pure CdS and HAP, the CdS (10 wt.%)/HAP composite exhibited much higher photocatalytic removal efficiency with 90.2% degradation of TC in 30 min, where the best conditions were an initial pH at 5 and catalyst dosage of 0.50 g/L. Moreover, a probable reaction mechanism of CdS/HAP composite was evaluated based on the analysis of electron spin resonance (ESR) and trapping experiments. It was worth pointing out that the CdS nanoparticles can promote the photo-generated charges separation of HAP microspheres, and thus to improve the photocatalytic degradation performance of the catalysts. It can be inferred that the CdS/HAP composite's photocatalytic superiority could be used for applications in the removal of many hazard pollutants.

Nanomaterials have been widely used in the fields of photocatalysis, sensors, and solar cells due to their excellent properties. However, nanomaterials are mainly prepared under nonlimited conditions. With the development of biomimetic nanochannels, their gating properties and chemical stability have come to the fore. Inspired by the potential applications of biomimetic nanochannels, it is significant to synthesize nanomaterials inside biomimetic nanochannels under limited conditions for facilitating newer applications. Therefore, we used an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template with different pore diameters as the limited condition to synthesize CdS structures via different synthesis methods. We successfully synthesized CdS nanoparticles and flower-like CdS structures in AAO nanochannels by the electrochemical-assisted method or solution impregnation method. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) results revealed that the CdS nanoparticles would agglomerate together to form irregular bulks with an increase in the applied voltage; flower-like CdS structures would block the AAO nanochannels for longer reaction times and higher concentrations. Energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that these structures self-assembled into AAO nanochannels were, in fact, CdS. In conclusion, these methods can provide important guidelines for nanomaterial synthesis in AAO nanochannels.

Searching photocatalysts for efficient hydrogen production has been a challenging issue for solar-energy harvesting. Using co-catalyst is proven to be an effective approach to improve the efficiency of photocatalyst in water-splitting. Here, we report that carbonized MoS2 (MoS2/Mo2C) can be a superactive co-catalyst in solar-driven hydrogen production. We show that MoS2/Mo2C decorated CdS achieves a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (34 mmol/h/g, ∼112 times higher than pure CdS) and excellent apparent quantum efficiency (41.4% at 420 nm). The outstanding photocatalytic performance of MoS2/Mo2C/CdS is attributed to the metallic characteristic of MoS2/Mo2C and suitable Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption, leading to enhanced light absorption, fast separation and transportation of photoinduced carriers, and optimal activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We further show that MoS2/Mo2C as co-catalyst can also dramatically improve the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. Our findings demonstrate that the carbonized transition metal disulfide can be active as co-catalyst in photocatalysis, providing guidance on exploring novel photocatalysts for energy harvesting.

In this manuscript, a novel photocatalyst, CdS/BCN composites with CdS nanoparticles in situ grown on BCN nanosheets (CdS/BCN), was synthesized via a simple electrostatic interaction assisted supersaturated recrystallization method. Benefiting from a unique heterostructure, the CdS/BCN composites exhibited highly efficient and stable photocatalytic activity for degrading RhB and methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, and moreover, a high rate constant of 0.115 min−1 has been obtained for degrading RhB, which was much higher than that of most CdS based photocatalysts (0.089 min−1). First-principles calculations revealed that the significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity of the CdS/BCN composite was mainly ascribed to the formed type-II heterojunction and the built-in electric field at the interface between CdS nanoparticles and BCN nanosheets, which promote the transfer of photo-generated electrons between CdS and BCN, and the ˙O2− radical originating from enriched photo-generated electrons was found to be the dominant species that was responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance in degrading organic molecules.

A novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensing was developed to detect mucin 1 (MUC1) based on TiO 2 /CdS:Eu nanocomposite. The TiO 2 /CdS:Eu nanocomposite modified fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode was prepared by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction technique (SILAR) and then was employed as matrix for immobilization of SH-DNA (DNA1). After 6-mercaptohexanol (MCH) blocked unbound sites of the electrode surface, the MUC1 aptamer(DNA2) was introduced, allowing MUC1 aptamer to hybridize with DNA1. Subsequently, CdS-COOH QDs as signal amplification elements were successively labeled on the terminal of MUC1 aptamer. In this case, the target MUC1 detection was based upon the photocurrent change originated from quantities change of the signal amplification elements CdS. In the presence of MUC1, the MUC1 aptamer was specifically bound with MUC1, and meanwhile MUC1/DNA2/CdS was released from the electrode surface, resulting in significantly decreased photocurrent intensity. The novel ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensing presented a highly selective, sensitive and reproductive detection of MUC1 from 1 nM to 5 μM with a lower detection limit of 0.3 nM. At the same time, it also provided a good specificity, reproducibility, stability and promising strategy to detect a variety of other protein targets for early clinical diagnosis of different diseases.

Ternary boron carbon nitride (BCN) semiconductors have been developed as emerging metal-free photocatalysts for visible-light reduction of CO2, but the achieved efficiency is still not satisfying. Herein, we report that the CO2 photoreduction performance of a bulk BCN semiconductor can be substantially improved by surface engineering with CdS nanoparticles. The CdS/BCN photocatalysts are characterized completely by diverse tests (e.g., XRD, FTIR, XPS, DRS, SEM, TEM, N2 sorption, PL, and transient photocurrent spectroscopy). Performance of the CdS/BCN heterostructures is evaluated by reductive CO2 conversion reactions with visible light under benign reaction conditions. Compared with bare BCN material, the optimized CdS/BCN photocatalyst exhibits a 10-fold-enhanced CO2 reduction activity and high stability, delivering a considerable CO production rate of 12.5 μmol h–1 (250 μmol h–1 g–1) with triethanolamine (TEOA) as the reducing agent. The reinforced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity is mainly assigned to the obviously improved visible-light harvesting and the greatly accelerated separation/transport kinetics of light-triggered electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, a possible visible-light-induced CO2 reduction mechanism is proposed on the basis of photocatalytic and photo(electro)chemical results.
