Construction of Ce-OFDC/PCN heterostructure with superior antibacterial performance: synergistic effects and mechanism insights

Fan Siyu,Xu Tianxi,Yang Hui,Ge Yan,Wang Genlin,Ohno Teruhisa,Xu Bin

In this study, a novel Ce-based metal–organic framework (Ce–OFDC) was synthesized via the hydrothermal method. To enhance its photocatalytic antimicrobial properties, polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) was incorporated into the Ce-OFDC matrix, forming a Ce-OFDC/PCN composite material. Antibacterial assays demonstrated that Ce-OFDC/PCN had significant inhibitory effects on both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), achieving inhibition rates of 99.5% and 94.3%, respectively. Notably, the antibacterial performance of Ce-OFDC/PCN was superior to that of Ce-OFDC or PCN alone. Furthermore, photocurrent and electrical impedance scanning measurements demonstrated that the Ce-OFDC/PCN composites showed improved photocurrent response and superior efficiency in separating photogenerated electrons and holes. The photocurrent density of Ce-OFDC/PCN reached 120 μA cm −2 , which was 1.5 times higher than that of PCN (80 μA cm −2 ) and 12 times higher than that of Ce-OFDC (10 μA cm −2 ). Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis indicated that reactive oxygen species played a crucial role in the antimicrobial process, with superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH) showing the most prominent influence. We conducted reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging experiments to further confirm this view. After adding glutathione (GSH) to remove all ROS, the antibacterial efficiency of Ce-OFDC/PCN decreased by about 40%. Adding D-mannitol to remove ·OH reduced the inhibition rate to 54.7%, and adding superoxide dismutase (SOD) to remove ·O 2 − reduced the inhibition rate to 65.4%. The Ce-OFDC/PCN heterostructure increased the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes, producing increased reactive oxygen species. That, in turn, contributed to the observed superior photocatalytic antibacterial performance. This research significantly advanced the development of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials and provided valuable insights into the design of antimicrobial photocatalysts. Graphic abstract

Elucidating the Promoting Roles of Ce in CeO2/Cu-SSZ-13 Composite NH3-SCR Catalysts

Zhiying Liu,Meiqing Shen,Shuhuan Wang,Chunjuan Zhang,Jun Wang,Wei Li,Feng Gao

To elucidate how CeO2 additives enhance the activity and stability of Cu-SSZ-13 SCR catalysts, we investigated two CeO2/Cu-SSZ-13 composite catalysts with Cu loadings of 1.0 and 2.5 wt %. These catalysts were characterized using an array of techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, NMR, H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, DRIFTS, DFT and SCR reactions under both steady-state and transient kinetic analysis conditions. Our findings demonstrate that CeO2 promotes low-temperature SCR by forming exchanged, isolated Ce-ions, which enhance Cu-ion coupling efficiency. External surface CeO2 particles can convert NO + O2 to surface nitrates, but these species primarily act as spectators below ∼250 °C, and do not contribute to the enhancement of low-temperature SCR activity. In contrast, these surface CeO2 particles can synergizes with Brønsted acid sites (BAS) to elevate high-temperature SCR activity. Furthermore, hydrothermal stability and sulfur resistance are improved by the presence of external surface CeO2 particles, a benefit that applies irrespective of Cu loading.

Chenkai Xu,Yujie Yuan,Valeryia Kasneryk,Maria Serdechnova,Carsten Blawert,Yuankun Wei,Dongmei Zeng,Mengke Wang,Dahai Gao,Hao Wang,Mikhail L. Zheludkevich,You Zhang

Corrosion protection of high-strength aluminum alloys remains a critical challenge, especially for applications in marine and aerospace environments. This work reports BIPT-6, a new cerium-based metal-organic framework designed for sustainable corrosion protection of AA2024 aluminum alloy. BIPT-6 contains both Ce(III) and Ce(IV) ions and is constructed with 2,5-furandicarboxylate (FDA 2− ), a biomass-derived ligand, through a simple one-pot solvothermal method. The structure and composition were verified by a series of advanced characterization methods. BIPT-6 crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group P 2 1/ n . The protective ability of novel BIPT-6 was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It demonstrated good corrosion inhibition efficiency for the AA2024 aluminum alloy samples immersed in 0.05 mol/L NaCl solution containing 5 × 10 −4  mol/L BIPT-6. Finally, BIPT-6 was applied as an additive to epoxy resin to prepare anti-corrosive coatings. The EIS results show that BIPT-6@Epoxy coating system provides a superior corrosion protection and stability to aluminum alloy AA2024 compared to blank coating. The corrosion inhibition mechanism of BIPT-6 was also investigated, highlighting its synergistic effect from dual corrosion inhibitors. This work showcased BIPT-6 as a promising approach for sustainable, smart corrosion protection strategies in aluminum alloys.

Enhancing Preferential CO Oxidation of Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst Through an Acid-Modified Method

Shan Li,Huixia Li,Taotao Huang,Xuebo Chen

The development of efficient Cu–Ce catalysts for selective CO oxidation in hydrogen streams (CO-PROX) remains a critical challenge for hydrogen purification technologies. Herein, we report an acid-modified Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalyst synthesized through HCl-assisted wet impregnation and thermal aging, demonstrating exceptional low-temperature CO-PROX performance. The optimized CuCe0.8(Cl)0.2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst achieves superior CO conversion below 160 °C and maintains stable activity for 50 h at 160 °C. Mechanistic studies reveal that HCl modification induces dual enhancement effects: (1) increased Cu+ species density enhances CO adsorption capacity; (2) elevated Ce3+ concentration promotes oxygen vacancy formation for efficient O2 activation. Complementary characterization demonstrates that the acid treatment optimizes the active species dispersion and creates hierarchical pore structures in the γ-Al2O3 support, which facilitates reactant accessibility and stabilizes catalytic intermediates. The reaction mechanism involves synergistic cooperation between Cu+-mediated CO adsorption, oxygen vacancy-assisted O2 activation, and hydroxyl-assisted bicarbonate intermediate formation on the alumina support. This work establishes an effective acid-modification strategy for designing durable CO-PROX catalysts, advancing the development of a practical hydrogen purification system.

Self-Promoting Mechanism of Oxalic Acid in Ce–CN-Assisted Photocatalytic Ozonation for Water Treatment

Qi Chen,Weirui Chen,Jing Wang,Gaozu Liao,Xukai Li,Xingmei Guo,Laisheng Li

Small molecular carboxylic acids (SCAs) are common in natural waters, but their impact on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is understudied. This study investigates the effects of various carboxylic acids, such as oxalic acid (OA), formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), succinic acid (SA), and benzoic acid (BA), on a Ce single-atom-doped graphitic carbon nitride (Ce–CN) photocatalytic ozonation (PCO) system. Among the tested SCAs, only OA significantly promoted O3 activation and pollutant degradation. When degrading atrazine (ATZ), Ce–CN performed worse than CN, but Ce–CN exhibited superior activity when OA was the target. The OA removal was 98% in the PCO/Ce–CN system, while it was 82% in the PCO/CN system in 30 min. The introduction of OA also enhanced ATZ removal from 55 to 86% within 5 min in the PCO/Ce–CN system. Moreover, OA’s yield during macromolecular organic compound degradation and its proportion among SACs affected PCO/Ce–CN activity. Mechanistic studies showed that OA could bind with Ce–CN, forming a Ce–OA complex that facilitated ligand-to-metal electron transfer (LMET), reducing the redox potential of the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) cycle, enhancing the ATZ removal efficiency, and boosting ozone activation. O3 decomposed into *O and •OH on Ce–CN, which were the primary reactive oxygen species for pollutant degradation. These findings highlighted the unique role of OA in Ce-based PCO systems, offering insights for enhancing AOP performance.

Moderate Carbonization and Nanoconfinement Engineering for High-Performance Fluoride Electrosorption in UiO-66(Ce) Derivatives

Xun Liu,Yufei Shu,Mengxia Wang,Weiwen Chen,Aling Wan,Zhongying Wang

Efficient and selective removal of fluoride from water remains a critical challenge in environmental remediation. In this work, we report a thermally modulated strategy to enhance the electrosorption performance of cerium-based metal–organic frameworks (UiO-66(Ce)) for fluoride removal. Rather than complete carbonization, controlled partial carbonization at 400 °C was found to be optimal, inducing the in situ formation of well-dispersed CeO2 nanoparticles and the development of interconnected mesoporous channels. The evolution of the pore structure with different thermal treatment temperatures was comprehensively characterized by N2 adsorption–desorption analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). This approach effectively balances electrical conductivity and active site availability, leveraging a nanoconfinement effect that restricts CeO2 aggregation, preserves active sites, and facilitates efficient ion transport. The optimized UiO-66(Ce)-400 °C material exhibits a high electrosorption capacity of 73.7 mg·g–1, rapid kinetics, and strong fluoride selectivity in the presence of competing anions. Finite element simulations and electrochemical analyses confirm that the synergy between enhanced mesoporosity, conductivity, and active site accessibility drives superior performance. Furthermore, the electrode demonstrates excellent regeneration and stability over five cycles. This study presents a versatile and scalable approach for engineering MOF-derived materials, offering valuable insights into the design of next-generation electrosorption systems for water treatment.

A comparative study of the catalytic nitration of toluene over bimetallic Ce-Mn modified Hβ zeolite

Renjie Deng,Wenjin Ni,Yao Tian

Bimetallic cerium-manganese modified Hβ zeolite sample (Ce/Mn-Hβ) was prepared by ultrasonic assisted impregnation method and applied in nitration of toluene. The characterization results show that the active components (Ce and Mn) are successfully introduced into the framework of Hβ zeolite. The catalyst shows excellent catalytic activity and reusability for the nitration of toluene, giving high para selectivity. Under optimized conditions, it gives 68.7% selectivity to para -nitrotoluene at 88.6% conversion over Ce/Mn-Hβ in the presence of acetic anhydride (Ac 2 O). The theoretical calculations indicate that the Ce/Mn bimetallic active sites in modified Hβ zeolite can easily activate the nitrification reagent (AcONO 2 ), and the enhancement of para selectivity is owing to the steric hindrance of catalyst. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism was proposed by the combination of experimental results and theoretical calculations.

The solubility, microstructure, and chemical durability of Ce-doped YIG ceramics designed as actinide waste forms

Shilin Luo,Zhitong Xu,Jian Liu,Baoliang Xu,Shiyin Ji,Yi Ding,Shengtai Zhang,Ling Zhang,Tao Duan,Jiehong Lei

Summary Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is a potential matrix for immobilizing high-level radioactive waste (HLW) due to its high actinide solubility and chemical flexibility. In this study, Ce was employed as a surrogate of Pu. A series of Y 3- x Ce x Fe 5 O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) samples were prepared by solid-state sintering at 1400°C to investigate the solubility, microstructure, and chemical durability of Ce-doped YIG. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the solubility of the Ce in a single garnet was 32 mol% at synthesis temperature of 1400°C. The SEM analysis indicated the YIG ceramic grain growth and compactness as Ce concentrations increased. The XPS analysis indicated that the amount of Ce 4+ out of the total Ce increased as the CeO 2 doping increased, and the maximum value was more than 75.9% in the sample synthesis at 1400°C. Static leaching experiments were also conducted on the single Ce-doped garnet synthesized at 1400°C. The normalized LR Ce and LR Y release rates were approximately 10 −4 and 10 −5 g m −2 d −1 after 42 days, respectively. The chemical durability was comparable to other ceramic matrices (such as pyrochlore and zircon, among others). These results demonstrated that YIG ceramics are suitable for immobilizing HLW, such as Pu or U. Highlights The solubility of Ce in single-phase YIG was 32 mol% at 1400°C. Grain size and compactness increased Ce content. The concentration of Ce 4+ in total Ce of sample could be over 75.9%. The obtained YIG ceramics exhibit excellent chemical stability. Novelty Statement Y 3-x Ce x Fe 5 O 12 ceramics were prepared by solid-state sintering and the solubility, microstructure, and chemical durability were investigated. The solubility of Ce was 32 mol% at 1400°C. The obtained YIG ceramics exhibit excellent chemical stability.

LnLiSiS4 (Ln = La and Ce): Promising infrared nonlinear optical materials designed by aliovalent substitution from SrCdSiS4

Ya-Xiang Han,Chun-Li Hu,Bing-Xuan Li,Jiang-Gao Mao

Aliovalent substitution is an effective route to design new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals. Using SrCdSiS 4 as a parent compound, two new infrared NLO lanthanide thiosilicates, namely LnLiSiS 4 (Ln = La and Ce), have been successfully obtained through aliovalent substitution. Interestingly, these compounds exhibit [LiSiS 4 ] 3- layers composed of vertex- and edge-shared LiS 4 and SiS 4 tetrahedra that significantly different from the [LnSiS 4 ] 3- layers composed of edge-shared LnS 6 trigonal prisms (or LnS 7 monocapped trigonal prisms) and SiS 4 tetrahedra in other ALnSiS 4 (A = K, Rb, Cs, Ln = lanthanide) compounds with larger sized alkali cations. LnLiSiS 4 (Ln = La and Ce) also achieve balanced properties for good infrared NLO materials: largest SHG response among all known thiosilicates (2.0 and 2.1 × AgGaS 2 @ 2 μm for LaLiSiS 4 and CeLiSiS 4 respectively) with phase matching ability, high laser induced damage threshold (14 and 9 times of AgGaS 2 ), wide bandgap (3.71 and 2.92 eV), wide infrared transmission range (0.35–18 μm) and good thermal stability above 700 °C. This work not only enriches the structure chemistry of lanthanide thiosilicates, but also provides an efficient route to design new high performance IR NLO materials.

Solubility and Valence Variation of Ce in Low-Alkali Borosilicate Glass and Glass Network Structure Analysis

Liu Yang,Yongchang Zhu,Jichuan Huo,Zhu Cui,Xingquan Zhang,Xuanjiang Dong,Jie Feng

Low-alkali borosilicate glass was used as the immobilization substrate, and Ce was used to replicate the trivalent and tetravalent actinides, in order to create simulated waste glass through melt heat treatment. The valence of Ce and solubility of CeO2in waste glass were studied as well as its network structure and thermal and chemical stability. The solubility of Ce in waste glass was examined by XRD and SEM. The network structure was examined by Raman spectroscopy. The valence of Ce was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Thermal analysis and product consistency (PCT) were employed to determine the thermal and chemical stability of waste glasses. The results show that the solubility of cerium in low-alkali borosilicate glasses is at least 25.wt.% and precipitates a spherical CeO2crystalline phase when it exceeds the solid solution limit; Ce is immobilized in the glass by entering the interstices of the glass network. Depolymerization and the transition from [BO3] to [BO4] occurs when CeO2doping levels rise. About 60 percent of Ce4+is converted to Ce3+, and the thermal stability of glass rises then falls with the increase of CeO2. All samples exhibit strong leaching resistance, with the average mass loss of Ce at 28 days being less than 10−4gm−2d−1.Keywords:low-alkali borosilicate;cerium;Raman;XPS

Al–Ce Co-modified for enhanced long-cycle performance of CaCO3-Based thermochemical energy storage materials

Zhiqiang Zhu,Qi Xu,Xiang Li,Shengdi Zhang,Chunxi Hai,Yuan Zhou

Ca-looping-driven thermochemical energy storage (TCES) materials are highly promising options for next-generation concentrated solar power (CSP) applications. However, the heat storage performance of pure Ca-based materials largely deteriorates after repeated cycles, reducing the operational lifespan of CSP plants. To improve the cycling stability of TCES materials, a sol–gel-based strategy is developed that introduces Al and Ce into CaCO 3 powders. After 50 cycles, the conversion rates of CaCO 3 -based composites exceed 80 % and the heat storage densities reach 1600 kJ/kg, with the composite with a Ca:Al:Ce molar ratio of 100:10:2.5 exhibiting exceptional stability. This high performance is attributed to oxygen vacancies generated by Ce 3+ and the porous structure preserved by Al 3+ throughout the cycling process. Furthermore, the adsorption energies of the CaO-based composites (pertaining to the (002) plane) are calculated using density functional theory. The results showed that the N-10 M ratio can decrease the adsorption energy of CaO for CO 2 from −1.5006 to −1.6718 eV and shorten the bond length between C CO2 and O CaO from 1.41 to 1.38 Å. Furthermore, PDOS curves of C and O on N-10 exhibit a significant shift toward lower energy regions. These results demonstrate that the addition of Al and Ce can enhance the CO 2 -capture capacity. Alongside presenting a new doping strategy, this study elucidates the microscopic physical mechanism by which Al and Ce improve the properties of CaO-based materials, offering valuable guidance for developing high-performance TCES materials for CSP applications.
