Semi-crystalline Ce(III/IV)-chitosan architecture overcomes the oxidation-adsorption paradox in hazardous antimony treatment

Miaojia Du,Yaopeng Zhang,Yuezhong Wen,Fang Li,Kai Yin,Wenliang Wu,Chensi Shen

Antimony (Sb) treatment presents a paradox: oxidizing toxic Sb(III) to Sb(V) for detoxification generates Sb(OH) 6 − species with a large hydration radius (7.36 Å) that hinders adsorption on conventional crystalline adsorbents due to limited accessible sites. We developed a Ce(III/IV)-chitosan semi-crystalline complex with mixed-valence coordination (Ce 3+ /Ce 4+  = 62.3:37.7) that addresses this challenge. Ce coordination constructs a semi-crystalline architecture where amorphous regions provide more accessible sites for large Sb(OH) 6 − while ordered domains maintain structural stability. The mixed-valence system sustained positive surface charge (+25 to +40 mV, pH 2–10) for electrostatic Sb(V) attraction, while Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ cycling catalyzed H 2 O 2 -mediated Sb(III) oxidation. At 2 mg/L Sb, a challenging concentration for industrial wastewater, the material achieved >98% removal within 90 min, reducing residual Sb to <0.04 mg/ L. maximum capacities reached 595.5 mg/g (Sb(V)) and 461.6 mg/g (Sb(III)), with excellent regenerability (>86% after five cycles). This work demonstrates how coordination-induced structural reorganization and mixed-valence chemistry overcome fundamental barriers in mixed-oxidation-state contaminant treatment.

Ce 4f and oxygen vacancy synergistically reinforce Cu-O covalency for efficient CO2 electroreduction to ethylene

Jiawei Wang,Jiacheng Li,Fumin Wang,Xubin Zhang,Shuai Liu,Shuai Niu,Liang Chen,Xu Wu

Stabilizing the Cu δ+ (1 < δ < 2) valence state during CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) process is essential to enhance the C-C coupling and further promote the conversion of CO 2 into value-added C 2+ products. Herein, we propose a new strategy to stabilize the Cu δ+ under the synergistic effect of 4f orbital and oxygen vacancies (O v ) through the construction of Ce doped CuO with enriched O v via symbiotic strategy (CuCeO-O v ). Theoretical calculations and experimental results show the derived gradient orbital coupling O v -[Ce 4f-O 2p-Cu 3d] unit with Ce 4f as electron buffer as well as O v as electron supply station can facilitate the electron itinerancy during CO 2 RR process, which is beneficial to reinforce the Cu-O covalency and inhibit peroxidation of Cu δ+ , thus endowing CuCeO-O v with a highly active (Faradaic efficiency of C 2 H 4 reaches 51% at −1.3 V vs. RHE) and stable bidirectional self-regulating capability (the current density and FE of C 2 H 4 show virtually no attenuation even after 13 h) simultaneously. This work not only gives a profound insight to the synergistic effect of dopants and O v in metal oxides but also provides new guidance to structural design of high-performance insert materials.

Enhanced adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) onto phytic acid modified N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide

Zengjin Fu,Yan Hao,Tingrui Lin,Huiling Ma,Huazheng Sai,Hui Yang

A novel adsorbent (PHPM) was synthesized through the functionalization of N -(2-Hydroxyethyl) acrylamide (HEAA) with phytic acid (PA) and applied for the adsorption of La(III) and Ce(III) ions. The material was characterized by means of FTIR, TGA, SEM, and XPS. The present study systematically investigated the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial La(III) or Ce(III) concentration, and pH value on the adsorption capacity. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of PHPM for La(III) and Ce(III) were determined to be 198.0 and 186.2 mg·g −1 , respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, as further confirmed by nonlinear fitting with low RMSE and χ 2 values. Thermodynamic analysis revealed negative Δ G values, positive Δ H and Δ S values, indicating a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven process. Furthermore, PHPM demonstrated high adsorption efficiency toward La(III) and Ce(III), even in the presence of competing ions. A preliminary cost analysis indicated that the preparation of PHPM was economically feasible with low cost. The adsorbent maintained approximately 50% of its initial adsorption capacity after ten consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. The findings demonstrate that PHPM was a promising adsorbent for the recovery of La(III) and Ce(III) from aqueous environments.

In–situ growth of Ni/Ce bimetallic organic framework composites on biochar for efficient phosphate adsorption

Lei Zhang,Tian Ai,Nan Zhang,Bo Peng,Ya Gao,Quanying Ma

To efficiently and economically remove phosphates from wastewater, this study employed a microwave–assisted hydrothermal method to successfully synthesise a bimetallic Ni/Ce organic framework composite supported on biochar. Compared to other adsorbents, this composite exhibits smaller particle size, more uniform morphology and greater defect density. Its unique structure facilitates electron transfer between the metals and the support while increasing the number of oxygen vacancies, thereby significantly enhancing adsorption performance. Adsorption experiments demonstrate that NiCe–BC–MOFs achieves adsorption equilibrium within 80 min, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 266.67 mg P/g – far exceeding most reported values in the literature. The material exhibits excellent adaptability and stability across a broad pH range (2 – 10), in the presence of multiple coexisting anions, and within diverse aquatic matrices. Its high efficiency was further validated in real phosphorus–containing wastewater. Its adsorption mechanism involves the synergistic action of hydrogen bonding, ligand exchange, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, the incorporation of biochar effectively reduces material costs, and after five cycles, the adsorption capacity remains above 82%, demonstrating good regenerability. Consequently, NiCe–BC–MOFs represent a phosphate adsorption material that combines high efficiency, low cost, and environmental friendliness, offering broad application prospects.

Dual-template derived Ce-doped WO3 nanosheets with enhanced surface reactivity for low-temperature NO2 detection

Mengqi Zhen,Yuanyue Qie,Jiahao Li,Yuhua Zhen,Cuiping Jia,Yan Shan

Dual-template hydrothermal synthesis of high-area WO 3 nanosheets. • Ce doping tunes WO 3 with optimal NO 2 sensing at 3% doping level. • Fivefold higher response (189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150 °C) vs WO 3 . • Detection limit of 25 ppb with fast response/recovery (28/37 s). Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a hazardous air pollutant, necessitating the development of highly sensitive sensors operating at low temperatures. Herein, Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets with enhanced surface reactivity were fabricated via a dual-template hydrothermal strategy using PVP and P123. The dual-template approach enables the formation of uniform nanosheets with enlarged specific surface area and abundant accessible active sites, thereby boosting surface adsorption and reaction kinetics. Ce doping further tailors the surface and electronic structures by introducing abundant oxygen vacancies and defect levels that reduce the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, which enhances charge transfer and adsorption capability. As a result, the 3% Ce-WO 3 sensor exhibits optimal performance at 150°C, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 , nearly five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 , along with a low detection limit of 25 ppb, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the synergistic effects of dual-template-derived surface reactivity and Ce-induced electronic modulation reduce the activation energy from 0.57 to 0.31 eV, thereby facilitating NO 2 adsorption and surface redox reactions at low temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of high-performance gas sensors for low-temperature NO 2 detection. Download: Download high-res image (91KB) Download: Download full-size image In summary, we have successfully synthesized Ce-doped WO 3 nanosheets via a dual-template hydrothermal method and systematically investigated their NO 2 sensing performance. Among the investigated samples, the sensor with 3% Ce doping exhibited the optimal NO 2 sensing performance, delivering a high response of 189.6 toward 10 ppm NO 2 at 150°C, which is approximately five times higher than that of pristine WO 3 under identical conditions. In addition, a low detection limit of 25 ppb was achieved, along with rapid response and recovery times of 28 s and 37 s, respectively. Mechanistic investigations reveals that Ce doping introduces abundant surface oxygen vacancies, narrows the apparent optical bandgap from 2.45 to 2.37 eV, and shifts the Fermi level upward, as confirmed by XPS, UV-Vis, and Mott-Schottky measurements. These electronic structure modifications significantly reduce the activation energy and promote surface redox kinetics, thereby enabling highly efficient NO 2 detection at relatively low operating temperatures. This work demonstrates that rare-earth doping, combined with rational morphology engineering, is an effective strategy for regulating the electronic structure and surface properties of WO 3 , providing a promising approach for the development of high-performance gas sensors for next-generation environmental monitoring applications.

Defect-Engineered Ce-MOFs: Synergistic Radical Scavenging and Mechanical Reinforcement for Gamma Radiation-Resistant Epoxy Composites

Runze Jin,Baosheng Xu,Lijie Qu

In this study, a novel Ce metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF) material was successfully synthesised via structural defect engineering using 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid as a defect agent by precisely controlling the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ valence ratio and hydroxyl content. Experimental results demonstrated that Ce-MOF not only effectively scavenged the free radicals generated in epoxy resin (EP) during γ-irradiation through the synergistic interaction between hydroxyl defects and Ce, thereby reducing the radical-induced chain scission and considerably enhancing the γ-radiation resistance of EP, but also improved the mechanical properties and thermal stability of EP via chemical bonding and hydrogen bonding. The oxidation inhibition rate improved from −34.2% for pure EP to −6.2% for EP/Ce-MOF-OH3. Furthermore, the material maintained high tensile strength and fracture toughness even after irradiation, exhibiting excellent radiation stability. After exposure to 800 kGy of γ-radiation, the changes in tensile strength and fracture toughness of pure EP were −23.05% and −24.07%, respectively, while the changes in those of EP/Ce-MOF-OH3 were only −9.75% and −5.39%, respectively. This study provides a new strategy for developing advanced radiation-resistant materials with considerable application potential.

Mechanistic insights into Ce-modulated reaction pathways for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Cu/ZnO catalysts

Pengchao Ren,Xin Fu,Shihang Meng,Yehao Yu,Yujing Weng,Liang Si,Yulong Zhang,Yi-Fan Han

Ce-modified CuZn-based catalysts show promising performance in CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. However, probing the nature of their active surface and elucidating the role of Ce in regulating reaction pathways at the molecular level remain challenging. In this study, a series of CuZnCe catalysts were prepared with varying CeO 2 contents. Kinetic tests reveal that CuZnCe catalysts exhibit significantly higher activity and methanol selectivity compared to the unmodified CuZn catalyst. In-situ AP-XPS analysis demonstrates that Ce species preferentially migrate toward the catalyst surface and exist predominantly in the form of Ce 3 + during CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. In-situ DRIFTS confirms that the CuZn catalyst facilitates the direct hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol via a formate intermediate. In contrast, the introduction of Ce shifts the reaction mechanism toward the reverse water-gas shift reaction followed by CO-hydrogenation (RWGS + CO-hydro), as Ce 3+ sites display a high propensity to stabilize carboxylate (CO 2 δ- ) intermediates derived from CO 2 . Meanwhile, the Cu-ZnO x interface remains essential for H 2 dissociation and supplying hydrogen species. The enhanced catalytic performance of the CuZnCe catalysts is primarily attributed to the synergistic effects between the Cu-ZnO x and Cu-CeO x interfaces. These findings highlight the pivotal role of metal-oxide interfaces in controlling reaction pathways and methanol selectivity during CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol, providing valuable insights for the rational design of high-performance catalysts.

Conduction behavior of Ba7Nb4MoO20 doped with low content of Y, Ce, Nd, Ho, Er and Yb

Sara Adeeba Ismail,Wenqi Lei,Lulu Jiang,Donglin Han

Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20 is a pure oxide ion conductor in both dry and wet oxygen atmospheres at the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells and has the promising potential to be applied as electrolyte materials. In this work, donor-doping trivalent rare earth elements R ( R  = Y, Ce, Nd, Ho, Er and Yb) to replace the divalent Ba cations increases oxygen content slightly, but effectively enhances oxide ion conduction. Although the solubility of these dopants is less than x  = 0.02 in Ba 7- x M x Nb 4 MoO 20+0.5 x , the Ba 6.98 Er 0.02 Nb 4 MoO 20.01 composition exhibits the highest conductivity, reaching 0.0066 and 0.0085 S cm −1 at 700 and 800 °C, respectively, nearly 6 times higher than that of pristine Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20 . H 2 O/D 2 O isotope effect measurement verifies that these materials are essentially pure oxide conductors even in wet atmospheres. It is hard to believe that the trace-level dopant concentration can influence the conduction behavior effectively. However, the slight change in the oxygen content, particularly in the BaO 2 conduction plane, is possible to influence the conductivities. The oxygen occupancy in the O1 and O5 sites thereby seems to be highly sensitive to and dependent on the occupancy of the dopants over the Ba and Nb/Mo sites.

Ultrathin and transparent Ce/Tb codoped LaF3 scintillator films for high resolution X-ray microscopic imaging

Qi Zhang,Guoyu Zhao,Qingxian Zhao,Xian Wei,Wei Wei

Ultrathin and transparent scintillator films for X-ray microscopic imaging are urgently desired to accurately detect the internal tiny structure of objects in nondestructive way. However, it is great difficulty for the commercial scintillators (e.g., CsI:TI, LYSO:Ce) to obtain the ultrathin single crystal scintillators below 50μm. Additionally, scintillator powders such as Gd 2 O 2 S:Tb, when embedded in polymeric matrix, demonstrate significant scattering resulting from their opacity and substantial thickness. Here, we present a novel ultrathin (∼46μm) and transparent (∼90%) LaF 3 :Tb,Ce-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite scintillator film with ultra-high loading content (∼85wt%) for high resolution X-ray microscopic imaging. It is obtained by thoroughly mixing directly precipitated LaF 3 :Tb,Ce nanocrystals (∼13nm) prepared by direct precipitation and PVA solution, followed by scraping and drying. The harmless solvent and low preparation temperature (below 100℃) contribute to its convenient and eco-friendly nature. More importantly, the film realizes high spatial resolution of 7μm thanks to its ultrathin and transparent feature.

Deactivation mechanism of Ca on Ce/TiO2 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Shu-ming Liu,Rui-tang Guo,Shu-xian Wang,Wei-guo Pan,Peng Sun,Ming-yuan Li,Shuai-wei Liu

Ca salts in fly ash have a deactivation effect on SCR catalyst. In this study, the deactivation mechanism of Ca on Ce/TiO 2 catalyst was investigated in term of the in situ DRIFT study. The experimental results indicate that the poisoning effect increases with reaction temperature. From the results of in situ DRIFT study, it may be concluded that the NH 3 -SCR reaction over Ce/TiO 2 catalyst takes place though two pathways: the L -H mechanisms (<200 °C) and the E-R mechanism (>200 °C). For Ce/TiO 2 -Ca, the NH 3 -SCR reaction over it is mainly controlled by L -H mechanism. The deactivation of Ce/TiO 2 -Ca lies in the following two aspects: (1) the inhibited NH 3 adsorption and NO oxidation (<200 °C); (2) the greatly suppressed NH 3 adsorption and activation (>200 °C).

TA-Zr/Ce Nanozyme-Mediated Lipopolysaccharide Dephosphorylation: A Targeted Strategy for Sepsis Treatment with Hemoperfusion Applications

Xuan Zhao,Ruilong Shao,Yiruo Yu,Zhiwen Hu,Yiting Jiang,Yilan Zhou,Zibiao Zhong,Jinping Zhou

Sepsis is a life-threatening inflammatory syndrome caused by bacterial infections, with limited therapeutic options in critical care. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria triggers sepsis by activating toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) through myeloid differentiation protein-2 (MD-2) binding. The phosphate groups in LPS serve as key recognition elements for this interaction. This study developed a zirconium/cerium (Zr/Ce) dual-metal nanozyme with phosphatase activity that catalyzes LPS dephosphorylation, disrupting LPS–TLR4 binding to inhibit NF-κB signaling and reduce inflammation. The nanozyme incorporated l-arginine and tannic acid (TA) to enhance the LPS binding capacity, while TA modification improved the antioxidant capability, constructing a multifunctional TA-Zr/Ce nanozyme. Results show that the nanozyme effectively catalyzes LPS dephosphorylation and suppresses inflammatory cytokine release from macrophages. In septic mice, TA-Zr/Ce treatment improved organ function, reduced systemic inflammation, and increased survival rates while promoting anti-inflammatory M2 macrophage polarization. Furthermore, this study constructed a regenerated cellulose microsphere (RCM)-based hemoperfusion system for loading nanozymes and efficiently removing LPS from blood, demonstrating strong clinical translation potential. Therefore, this research provides additional approaches and tools for the clinical management of sepsis.

Simple Preparation of LaPO4:Ce, Tb Phosphors by an Ionic-Liquid-Driven Supported Liquid Membrane System

Jianguo Li,Hongying Dong,Fan Yang,Liangcheng Sun,Zhigang Zhao,Ruixi Bai,Hao Zhang

In this work, LaPO4:Ce, Tb phosphors were prepared by firing a LaPO4:Ce, Tb precipitate using an ionic-liquid-driven supported liquid membrane system. The entire system consisted of three parts: a mixed rare earth ion supply phase, a phosphate supply phase, and an ionic-liquid-driven supporting liquid membrane phase. This method showed the advantages of a high flux, high efficiency, and more controllable reaction process. The release rate of PO43−from the liquid film under different types of ionic liquid, the ratio of the rare earth ions in the precursor mixture, and the structure, morphology, and photoluminescence properties of LaPO4:Ce, Tb were investigated by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence emission spectra methods. The results showed that a pure phase of lanthanum orthophosphate with a monoclinic structure can be formed. Due to differences in the anions in the rare earth supply phase, the prepared phosphors showed micro-spherical (when using rare earth sulfate as the raw material) and nanoscale stone-shape (when using rare earth nitrate as the raw material) morphologies. Moreover, the phosphors prepared by this method had good luminescent properties, reaching a maximum emission intensity under 277 nm excitation with a predominant green emission at 543 nm which corresponded to the5D4-7F5transition of Tb3+.
