The plant Sophora flavescens Ait was used to prepare carbon nanodots (CDs) which exhibited high fluorescence quantum yield (35.2%). The CDs were remarkably quenched by chromium(VI) (Cr(VI)) and acted as an “on–off” fluorescent probe to realize the real sample detection of Cr(VI) at pH 6.0. The linear range was 0.06–40 μM and the detection limit was 20 nM. In addition, it was found that the fluorescence recovered again when Cr(VI) was redoxed by ascorbic acid (AA), and the recovery degree was linear with the amount of AA from 0.1 to 4.0 mM. With a low detection limit of 80 μM, the system was satisfactorily used to detect AA in several fruits. In conclusion, the proposed “on–off–on” fluorescent probes based on the synthesized CDs were simple, of low-cost and concise for the sequential detection of two targets.

Biochar, due to its ability to remediate heavy metals and organic contaminants from polluted water is considered as an economic adsorption material. This work involved pyrolysis driven eucalyptus carbon (EC) to produce eucalyptus activated carbon (AC) through a novel mechanism of using phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) and its subsequent testing for efficient adsorption of Cr (VI) from aqueous environments . Advanced characterization techniques like XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS were employed to characterize the structure and composition of EC and AC. The AC could remove 99.76% of Cr(VI), which was higher than EC removal rate of 25.24%. The surface area of AC increased by almost 5 times 1265.56 m 2 /g compared to EC (253.25 m 2 /g). The removal rate of Cr(VI) was highly influenced by adsorption capacity , pH, adsorption time, temperature, kinetics, and isotherm. Reaction rate kinetics , isothermal , and thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption curve of AC fits well with the quasi-second-order kinetic model . AC adsorption process was a spontaneous endothermic reaction limited by intraparticle diffusion and a combination of chemical and physical adsorption.

In this work, the function of 4-nitroimidazole (4-NIm) in the formation of Cr-MIL-101 was confirmed. It was found that 4-NIm is an effective additive in the formation of Cr-MIL-101 synthesized at lower temperature. The investigation of crystallization time showed that 4-NIm can prevent Cr-MIL-101 phase converting into Cr-MIL-53 phase. The effect of concentration of 4-NIm on the morphology and the yield of Cr-MIL-101 may therefore be explained by increasing the nucleation rate. The investigation of crystallization temperature revealed that 4-NIm changes the synthesis temperature range of Cr-MIL-101 into 423–463 K. The assistant function of 4-NIm was played through interaction with H + and NO 3 − in the synthesis system, which may lead to enhancement of the deprotonation of H 2 BDC.

Recently, the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) has been extensively studied. Herein, we successfully prepared the BiOBr-Bi 2 S 3 heterojunctions with high photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction performance using an ion exchange method. The optimal BiOBr-Bi 2 S 3 heterojunction (prepared with BiOBr, pH of 6.0, 2 mmol Na 2 S 2 O 3 ·5H 2 O,) achieved 100% removal of Cr(VI) within 12 min. The performance of photo-reduced Cr(VI) was about 28.9 and 184.6 times higher than that of pure Bi 2 S 3 and BiOBr, respectively. Besides, BiOBr-Bi 2 S 3 heterojunctions had a good adsorption efficiency for Cr(III), suggesting that they could be applied as bifunctional photocatalyst. The formation process and photoelectric properties of the BiOBr-Bi 2 S 3 heterojunctions were revealed by a series of characterizations. In conclusion, this work reported the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis of the BiOBr-Bi 2 S 3 heterojunctions for Cr removal for the first time, suggesting that the BiOBr-Bi 2 S 3 heterojunctions could act as a novel photocatalytic adsorbent to treat the Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Fast and accurate test Cr(VI) in the whole blood is particularly critical for the treatment and prevention of Cr(VI) poisoning. Here, a blood compatible, high-efficient sensor based on the magnetic glassy carbon electrode (MGCE) that modified by conductive polyaniline (PANI), heparin and tannin modified Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (magnetic tannin-modified adsorbent, MTA) with high adsorption ability toward Cr(VI) ions was developed. Results indicated the designed PANI/Hep/MTA/MGCE exhibited high sensitivity for Cr(VI) in the concentration range of 10 − 7 to 10 −4 ppm with a 0.87 μM detection limit (3σ method). In particular, this prepared sensor not only exhibited outstanding electrochemical performance for Cr(VI) detection, but also possessed good antibiofouling characteristics due to the existence of heparin, which can provide guarantee for direct detection of Cr(VI) in the whole blood.

A new type of orange emission carbon dots (OCDs) was prepared by hydrothermal method using 1,2,4-triaminobenzene and p-aminobenzenesulphonic acid as precursors. TEM characterization showed that the new OCDs were uniform in size with an average particle size of 4–7 nm. Infrared spectroscopy and XPS analysis showed that the surface of the OCDs were rich in hydrophilic functional groups. Fluorescence spectroscopy results showed that the obtained OCDs exhibited excellent fluorescence with an absolute quantum yield as high as 14.9%. The OCDs were further applied to the detection of metal ions. It was found that the fluorescence of OCDs could be effectively quenched by Cr(Ш) with a detection limit of 0.38 μ m . Notably, the obtained OCDs have been successfully used for fluorescence detection of Cr 3+ ions in cell level.

Pyrrole (Py) is easily agglomerated during the polymerization process, affecting its performance. In this paper, polypyrrole/monodispersed latex sphere (PPy/MLS) composites were prepared using in-situ polymerization for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The specific surface area of PPy/MLS (39.30 m2/g) was increased relative to that of PPy (24.82 m2/g), thus providing more effective adsorption sites. In addition, the adsorption properties of Cr(VI) under different conditions, including Py content, pH of the aqueous solution, and PPy/MLS dosage, were investigated to reveal the adsorption mechanism. The results showed that PPy/MLS possessed high Cr(VI) adsorption capacities when the Py content was 50 wt %. The maximum adsorption capacity was 343.64 mg/g at pH 2.0 and 25 °C. Remarkably, the adsorbents exhibited an excellent removal rate of Cr(VI) after three cycles of adsorption–desorption (over 99%), suggesting that the adsorbents had exceptional recyclability. Furthermore, the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The high adsorption performance, sustainability, and cost-efficiency make this adsorbent a promising candidate for large-scale Cr(VI) contaminant removal.

The harm of chromium pollution to the environment has caused a widespread concern; hexavalent chromium is a toxic, cancerogenic, and genetically mutagenic contaminant to the human body; by contrast, trivalent chromium is almost non-toxic to the human body; therefore, it is a feasible method to reduce hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. Photocatalysis is a new environmentally friendly and harmless technology, which can transform pollutants into non-toxic or less toxic products. In this study, we synthesized TiO 2 /rGO/CuO ternary nanocomposites to treat hexavalent chromium pollution under visible light. Under optimal conditions, the photoreduction efficiency of 100 ppm hexavalent chromium solution could reach 100% in 80 min. The photoreduction rate of hexavalent chromium is 29.4 times than that of pure TiO 2 . The photocatalytic property of CuO in TG2C8 nanocomposites is attributed to accelerate the separation of electrons and holes and the efficient electron transfer through the rGO framework. We believe that TiO 2 /rGO/CuO composites have great potential in wastewater treatment.

The hazard of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from environmental pollution and medical implanted metal has been recognized widely. However, removal of trace amount of Cr(VI) in the blood circumstance faces tremendous difficulties for that most of Cr(VI) located in erythrocytes, thus there is almost no literature to report the removal of Cr(VI) in blood. Herein, a removal strategy, named as reduction–adsorption–separation, is proposed to realize the removal of Cr(VI) in blood. First, magnetic core–shell mesoporous nanocomposite is fabricated by using Fe3O4 nanoparticles as magnetic core and mesoporous silica (MS) as shell, hyperbranched polyamide (HPA) as mesoporous channel modifier and ascorbic acid (ASC) as the reductant drug loaded in the mesoporous channels, which is also denoted as Fe/MS/HPA/ASC. Then, on the basis of the bionic idea, the erythrocyte membrane (EM)-wrapped Fe/MS/HPA/ASC to protect ASC from deactivation is obtained and named as the therapeutic agent (Fe/MS/HPA/ASC@EM). During removal process, the therapeutic agent can enter in erythrocytes to use ASC to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and HPA in mesoporous channels to adsorb Cr(III) and can then be recollected from blood by magnetic separation. Finally, an animal model of blood Cr(VI) poisoning is constructed and used to test the removal ability of Cr(VI) from pig blood in vivo, verifying the effectiveness of this blood Cr(VI) removal strategy, providing a possible way to design more efficient and biosafe therapeutic agents for blood purification.

A biomass bagasse-based hyperbranched adsorbent (BF/HBPA) with high amino density was synthesized using epichlorohydrin (ECH) to cross-link hyperbranched polyamine (HBP-NH 2 ) with bagasse fibre powder (BF). Using this kind of “cross-linking” procedure to synthesize the bagasse-based hyperbranched adsorbent could overcome the disadvantages of the low amino density in the stepwise grafting process, avoiding the requirement of strict preparation conditions and a complicated synthesis process. Thus, the as-prepared BF/HBPA could completely remove low-level Cr(VI) (1.6 mg/L), and showed an outstanding adsorption capacity (330.7 mg/g) for Cr(VI) at high Cr(VI) concentrations (108.3 mg/L) under 30 °C and pH value of 2. BF, as the framework of BF/HBPA cross-linking network, enhanced the adsorption rate (arrived at adsorption equilibrium in 15 min) for Cr(VI) on BF/HBPA. Moreover, BF/HBPA showed a promising regeneration property. After reusing for 10 cycles, the removal rate of BF/HBPA was maintained above 96%. The adsorption mechanism of physical electrostatic adsorption, chemical chelating adsorption and oxidation-reduction were all attributed to the complete removal of low-level Cr(VI) to the Safe Drinking Level (US EPA) (0.05 mg/L).

In this work, a paper-based analytical device (PAD) for sensitive speciation detection of chromium (Cr) by smartphone camera was introduced. In anion electrokinetic stacking mode, Cr (VI) in the form of CrO4 2− was firstly enriched into a narrow band on a paper fluidic channel, and then the band was visualized by 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC). Colorimetric detection of Cr (VI) was based on the gray intensity of stacking bands. Detection of Cr (III) was achieved by subtraction of the detection results of Cr (VI) before and after the sample was oxidized. Under optimized conditions, the detection limit of Cr (VI) and Cr (III) of 0.20 μM (~10.4 μg L −1 ) and 0.30 μM (~14.6 μg L −1 ) were achieved with a linear response in the range of 0.67–5.00 μM and 0.93–6.00 μM, respectively. The detection performance of PAD is close to that obtained by desktop spectrophotometry , thanks to the online stacking effect. Meanwhile, this PAD also exhibited a good selectivity over coexisting cations and anions, thanks to the charge selectivity of the stacking mode and the selective visualization reaction of DPC. Speciation detection of Cr from tap water, river water, surface water, and electroplating wastewater was demonstrated. This work shows the potential of PADs for on-site detection of Cr (VI) in environmental water samples.

Propane dehydrogenation is commonly operated at temperatures exceeding 600 °C due to thermodynamic requirements. However, high temperature accelerates the deactivation of catalysts because of the coke deposition. Therefore, it is quite necessary to develop catalysts with high catalytic activity and improved anti-coking ability. To this end, an Al-doped Cr 2 O 3 catalyst derived from MIL-101(Cr/Al) is prepared in this work. The preparation conditions, including the carbonization temperature of MIL-101 and the proportion of Cr/Al, are optimized via experimental studies. Meanwhile, the adsorption and dehydrogenation behaviors of propane on the catalyst are investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. Findings indicate that the optimum carbonization temperature and Cr/Al proportion are 900 °C and 6:4, respectively. Under the reaction condition of P = 0.1 MPa, T = 580 °C and GHSV = 800 h −1 , the propane conversion and propylene selectivity on the Cr 6 /Al 4 catalyst are 19.5% and 92.0%, respectively. The activity stability of the Al-doped Cr 2 O 3 is elongated significantly due to the lower desorption energy of propene and higher energy barrier for the coke formation on the catalyst. In sum, the present work completed via experiments and DFT calculations will lead to a better understanding of the Al-doped Cr 2 O 3 catalyst and guide the rational design of anti-coking catalysts for propane dehydrogenation.
