AZn4Ga5Se12 (A = K, Rb, or Cs): Infrared Nonlinear Optical Materials with Simultaneous Large Second Harmonic Generation Responses and High Laser-Induced Damage Thresholds

Man-Man Chen,Sheng-Hua Zhou,Wenbo Wei,Xin-Tao Wu,Hua Lin,Qi-Long Zhu

Despite the fact that nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals such as AgGaS2 and AgGaSe2 have been widely used in the infrared (IR) range due to their large second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients and wide range of IR transparency windows, the small laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) remains a great issue hindering their high-power applications. Herein, three noncentrosymmetric (NCS) chalcogenides AZn4Ga5Se12 (A = K, Rb, or Cs) are successfully obtained through an appropriate flux method after the extensive design and synthesis of the A/Zn/Ga/Q system. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that they adopt trigonal space group R3 (No. 146) with three-dimensional diamond-like frameworks composed of [M9Se24] layers (M = Zn or Ga) stacking in the same direction and filled by charge-balancing A+ cations. Noticeably, they all exhibit strong powder SHG responses (2.8–3.7 × AgGaS2) and amazing LIDTs (19.2–23.4 × AgGaS2). In addition, theoretical calculations are performed to further determine the relationship between NCS structures and NLO properties. This work provides effective solutions for overcoming the trade-off between strong SHG and high LIDT in IR-NLO materials.

Ultra-efficient recovery of radioactive Cs/Sr/Tb/Eu from wastewater via in situ co-synthesized ternary transition metal catalyzed bioelectrocatalytic reduction system

Yaqi Liu,Hui Lu,Changfei Gao,Yameng Wang,Haoran Liu,Huiqiang Ma,Bo Wang,Lifen Liu,Yihua Li,Xianbo Chang

The persistent threat posed by radioactive metal contamination necessitates the development of innovative and sustainable remediation strategies. In this study, we proposed a self-sustaining bioelectrocatalytic reduction system (BECRs) incorporating an in situ co-synthesized ternary Fe/Cu/Co@Z-CF cathode derived from zeolite imidazole salt skeleton (ZIF) -functionalized carbon felt. The engineered electrode demonstrated outstanding electrocatalytic performance, characterized by an ultrahigh exchange current density of 7.68 × 10 −3 A cm −2 and minimal charge transfer resistance of 0.11 Ω. These properties were attributed to the synergistic redox cycling of Fe-Cu-Co species and the enhanced exposure of active sites facilitated by the ZIF structure. Under optimized conditions at pH 11, the BECRs achieved removal efficiencies exceeding 98.28 % for targeted radionuclides (Cs + : 99.00 %, Sr 2+ : 98.28 %, Tb 3+ : 99.95 %, Eu 3+ : 99.97 %) while generating a stable bio-voltage of 730 mV. The removal mechanisms operated synergistically through three primary pathways: direct electroreduction of metals to elemental or metallic oxide forms at the catalytic cathode; electroflocculation mediated by in situ formation of Fe(OH) x species and microbial adsorption by enriched pollutant-resistant microbial consortia, notably with a 16.3 % increase in Bacteroidota abundance. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed charge complementarity among Fe/Cu/Co sites, accelerating oxygen reduction kinetics. Crucially, the electrode demonstrated negligible metal leaching across pH 3–11, confirming ecological safety. Kinetic analysed distinguish radionuclide-specific pathways: pseudo-first-order for Cs⁺/Sr²⁺ versus pseudo-second-order for Tb 3+ /Eu 3+ , informing selective recovery strategies. This work established a green, energy-positive paradigm for radioactive wastewater treatment, achieving simultaneous decontamination, resource recovery (metallic Cs/Sr/Tb/Eu) with significant potential for closed-loop nuclear effluent management.

Crosslinker-free PVA/CS-ag@PDA hydrogel with controlled silver ion release and NIR-enhanced antibacterial activity for MRSA-infected diabetic wound repair

Xiali Guan,Xinbo Wei,Qian Wang,Bing Chen,Yu Wang,Xiaonan Yang

A crosslinker-free PVA/CS hydrogel with polydopamine-engineered Ag nanoparticles was developed. • The hydrogel shows strong tissue adhesion, mechanical robustness, and self-healing for long-term wound application. • PDA enables sustained Ag⁺ release and stable NIR-responsive photothermal heating. • Ag@PDA0.5 balances antibacterial efficacy, photothermal activity, and cytocompatibility. • NIR-mediated photothermal treatment reduces inflammation and promotes vascularization in MRSA-infected diabetic wounds. Chronic diabetic wounds complicated by multidrug-resistant bacterial infections remain a persistent clinical challenge, requiring advanced wound dressings that integrate effective antibacterial protection with tissue regeneration. Herein, we developed a biocompatible and crosslinker-free hydrogel system composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), integrated with polydopamine-coated silver nanoparticles (Ag@PDA). The PDA coating, together with the hydrogel matrix, regulated Ag + release, thereby maintaining antibacterial activity while reducing silver-associated cytotoxicity. The resulting PVA/CS-Ag@PDA hydrogel exhibited favorable mechanical properties, tissue adhesion, cytocompatibility, antioxidant activity, and broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy. In vitro and in vivo experiments collectively demonstrated the pro-regenerative and immunomodulatory effects of the hydrogel. In vitro, the hydrogel promoted endothelial cell migration and regulated macrophage inflammatory responses, as evidenced by reduced pro-inflammatory markers and enhanced repair-associated gene expression. In an MRSA-infected diabetic rat wound model, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA treatment suppressed bacterial growth, attenuated inflammatory infiltration, downregulated pro-inflammatory genes including Il6 and Tnf, and upregulated repair-associated genes including Il10 and Mrc1. Moreover, Ag@PDA endowed the hydrogel with concentration-dependent near-infrared (NIR)-triggered photothermal behavior. Among the tested formulations, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA0.5 generated a moderate and stable photothermal response and was selected for NIR-assisted antibacterial treatment. Under NIR irradiation, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA0.5 further enhanced bacterial eradication against MRSA and E. coli . NIR-assisted treatment also reduced CD45 + inflammatory cell infiltration and CD68 + macrophage accumulation, enhanced CD206-associated reparative signaling, and improved epidermal remodeling, collagen deposition. This work presents a rational strategy for engineering silver-based hydrogel dressings with controlled Ag + release, NIR-enhanced antibacterial activity, and improved regenerative efficacy for infected diabetic wound repair. Pristine metal oxide gas sensors often suffer from poor selectivity and limited polarizability. The objective of this work is to overcome these bottlenecks by developing an advanced material tailored specifically for highly sensitive and intelligent NO 2 sensing applications. Consequently, oxygen vacancy-rich 2D ultrathin Cs-doped WO 3-x nanosheets were synthesized via a solvothermal method. KPFM, UPS, and TAS confirmed that optimal Cs doping (0.08 mol%) optimizes the surface work function and drastically prolongs the photo-generated carrier lifetime (

Selective capture of Cs(I) from aqueous solution by synergistic effects of size-compatible lattice confinement and ion exchange using kaolinite-derived sodalite

Junyi Feng,Jiwei Zhang,Mengyi Tang,Xiaodan Zhang,Xiaoshuang Chen,Xuesong Feng,Kaifa Du,Wei Li,Huayi Yin,Bowen Deng,Dihua Wang

Efficient capture and separation of Cs + from nuclear wastewater remains a central challenge in nuclear chemical engineering. Here, a solvent-free solid-state conversion strategy is developed to directionally transform natural kaolinite into sodalite under thermally driven solid-state conditions, yielding a Cs + -selective capture material with intrinsic ion-sieving properties. The resulting sodalite exhibits a high Cs + adsorption capacity of up to 242.96 mg/g in weakly acidic solutions and reaches adsorption equilibrium within approximately 50 min, demonstrating fast uptake kinetics. Isotherm and kinetic analyses demonstrate that Cs + adsorption proceeds via a monolayer, chemisorption-dominated process governed by ion exchange. Multiscale characterization combined with theoretical calculations reveals that Cs + capture arises from the synergistic effects of size-matched pore confinement and spatially confined ion-exchange sites within the sodalite framework. These findings establish kaolinite-derived sodalite as a viable inorganic platform for the efficient separation and long-term management of radionuclides in nuclear wastewater.

Study on Preparation of Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Aerogel with Graphene−Intercalated Attapulgite(GO−ATP@CS−PVA) and Adsorption Properties of Crystal Violet Dye

Weikai Sun,Hongxiang Ou,Ziwei Chen

Adsorption is one of the effective methods of treating dye wastewater. However, the selection of suitable adsorbent materials is the key to treating dye wastewater. In this paper, GO−ATP was prepared by an intercalation method by inserting graphene oxide (GO) into the interlayer of alabaster attapulgite (ATP), and GO−ATP@CS−PVA aerogel was prepared by co−blending−crosslinking with chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for the adsorption and removal of crystalline violet dye from the solution. The physicochemical properties of the materials are characterized by various methods. The results showed that the layer spacing of the GO−ATP increased from 1.063 nm to 1.185 nm for the ATP, and the specific surface area was 187.65 m2·g−1, which was 45.7% greater than that of the ATP. The FTIR results further confirmed the success of the GO−ATP intercalation modification. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results show that the aerogel has good thermal stability properties. The results of static adsorption experiments show that at 302 K and pH 9.0, the adsorption capacity of the GO−ATP@CS−PVA aerogel is 136.06 mg·g−1. The mass of the aerogel after adsorption−solution equilibrium is 11.4 times that of the initial mass, with excellent adsorption capacity. The quasi−secondary kinetic, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models can better describe the adsorption process of the aerogel. The biobased composite aerogel GO−ATP@CS−PVA has good swelling properties, a large specific surface area, easy collection and a low preparation cost. The good network structure gives it unique resilience. The incorporation of clay as a nano−filler can also improve the mechanical properties of the composite aerogel.

Synthesis and Characterization of New-Type Ionic Cocrystals with Cyanuric Acid and Alkali Halides: AX·(H3C3N3O3)2 (A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br)

Jinhui Wang,Xinyuan Zhang,Fei Liang,Zhanggui Hu,Yicheng Wu

Recently, neutral cyanurate acid and negative (iso-)cyanurates (HxC3N3O3)(3–x)– (x = 0–2) with strong conjugated π-bonds have been proposed as a new possible type of structural motifs for exploring high-performance birefringent materials. Especially, ionic cocrystals (ICCs) with neutral H3C3N3O3 molecules have attracted much attention due to their extended ultraviolet transparent range and concurrently improved birefringence. Herein, three ICC single crystals, RbCl·(H3C3N3O3)2 (I), CsCl·(H3C3N3O3)2 (II), and RbBr·(H3C3N3O3)2 (III), combining cyanurate acid and alkali halides have been designed and synthesized in ethanol solution. They simultaneously exhibit wide band gaps more than 5.4 eV, large birefringence (Δnexp ≈ 0.096–0.115, Δncal ≈ 0.071–0.105 at 800 nm), and high thermal stability above 325 °C. In addition, theoretical calculations have also been performed to evaluate the relationship of the molecular arrangement and their anisotropic optical properties. This work suggests that cyanurate-based cocrystals could be a promising structural family for the discovery of ultraviolet birefringent crystals.

Fulvic acid degradation in Fenton-like system with bimetallic magnetic carbon aerogel Cu-Fe@CS as catalyst: Response surface optimization, kinetic and mechanism

Xia Qin,Ziyuan Wang,Chengrui Guo,Rui Guo,Yue Lv,Mingran Li

In this study, Cu-Fe bimetallic magnetic chitosan carbon aerogel catalyst (Cu-Fe@CS) was prepared by the sol-gel method to degrade Fulvic acid (FA) in Fenton-like system. Degradation experiment results showed bimetallic catalyst Cu-Fe@CS can degrade more FA than monometallic catalysts (Cu@CS and Fe@CS) due to the synergistic effect between the copper and iron. Plackett Buiman (PB) design showed that pH and temperature exhibited significant influence on FA degradation. The significant factors were optimized by Central Composite Design (CCD), the results revealed that the maximum FA removal reached 96.59% under the conditions of pH 4.07 and temperature 93.77 °C, the corresponding TOC removal reached 77.7%. The kinetic analysis implied that the reaction followed pseudo-first order kinetic with correlation coefficient (R 2 ) = 0.9939. The Arrhenius fitting analysis revealed that Cu–Fe@CS had a lower activation energy (Ea) than Cu@CS and Fe@CS, meaning that reaction was easier to occur in Fenten-like system with Cu–Fe@CS. Catalyst still remained the higher FA and TOC removals of 96.28% and 77.33% after six runs, respectively. The FA removal was reduced by 65.53% with 12 mmol tertiary butanol (TBA) as scavenger, indicating that •OH played an important role in FA degradation. Finally, the catalytic degradation mechanism was proposed.

ACs5Bi4(PO4)2(P2O7)3 (A = K, Rb and Cs) with two kinds of isolated P–O groups designed by dimensional reduction theory

Shiwei Liu,Jiale Chen,Hongping Wu,Hongwei Yu,Zhanggui Hu,Jiyang Wang,Yicheng Wu

The dimensional reduction theory is applied to an A2O–P2O5–Bi2O3 system where P2O5 serves as a binary parent while A2O and Bi2O3 are regarded as dimensional reduction agents. Thus, three novel phosphates ACs5Bi4(PO4)2(P2O7)3 (A = K, Rb and Cs) have been prepared through the high-temperature solution method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that they all crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c (no. 14) and in their structures, two different kinds of P–O units, i.e. isolated PO4 tetrahedra and P2O7 dimers, are interconnected by Bi–O groups to construct a 3∞[Bi4(PO4)2(P2O7)36−] framework. Note that with the change of cationic size in their structures, the Bi3+ cations also exhibit flexible coordination, i.e. BiO5 and BiO6 polyhedra in KCs5Bi4(PO4)2(P2O7)3 and only BiO6 polyhedra in Cs6Bi4(PO4)2(P2O7)3, suggesting that combining the flexible coordination of Bi3+ cations with phosphates based on dimensional reduction theory is an effective strategy to guide the synthesis of new compounds.

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for contamination analysis of Sr and Cs on 316L stainless steels in alkaline environment for spent nuclear fuel storage

Yupeng Xie,Jie Wang,Yaocheng Hu,Jing Zhang,Yong Gao,Haipeng Li,Sheng Wang

The contamination of fission products ( 90 Sr and 137 Cs) on the metallic material (316L stainless steel) of alkaline spent fuel storage pond threatens to decommission nuclear facilities. Compared with previous studies unable to detect Cs on the surface of contaminated steel by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), this study selected the emission lines of Sr II 407.74 nm and Cs I 455.77 nm as the analytical spectral lines of LIBS, and for the first time satisfactorily measured and analyzed the accumulation of Sr and Cs on the surface of 316L stainless steel for 7, 14, 21, 30 and 60 days, respectively. It was found during the accumulation, the concentration of Sr and Cs on the surface reached their maximum after 21 days, and relatively stabilized 30 days later. In addition, combined with the physicochemical characterizations, the contamination mechanism of Sr and Cs on 316L stainless steel was proposed, with the contaminants gradually diffusing from the oxide layer dissolved and damaged in the alkaline corrosive environment to the matrix. Strontium had two forms on the steel surface: SrCrO 4 in the oxide layer and SrCO 3 in the matrix, but the contamination of Cs was more inclined to the surface than Sr.

Characterization of a novel lipase from Bacillus licheniformis NCU CS-5 for applications in detergent industry and biodegradation of 2,4-D butyl ester

Junxin Zhao,Shichang Liu,Yifang Gao,Maomao Ma,Xianghui Yan,Ding Cheng,Dongman Wan,Zheling Zeng,Ping Yu,Deming Gong

Enzymatic degradation has become the most promising approach to degrading organic ester compounds. In this study, Bacillus licheniformis NCU CS-5 was isolated from the spoilage of Cinnamomum camphora seed kernel, and its extracellular lipase was purified, with a specific activity of 192.98 U/mg. The lipase was found to be a trimeric protein as it showed a single band of 27 kDa in SDS-PAGE and 81 kDa in Native-PAGE. It was active in a wide range of temperatures (5–55 °C) and pH values (6.0–9.0), and the optimal temperature and pH value were 40 °C and 8.0, respectively. The enzyme was active in the presence of various organic solvents, metal ions, inhibitors and surfactants. Both crude and purified lipase retained more than 80% activity after 5 h in the presence of commercial detergents, suggesting its great application potential in detergent industry. The highest activity was found to be towards medium- and long-chain fatty acids (C 6 -C 18 ). Peptide mass spectrometric analysis of the purified lipase showed similarity to the lipase family of B. licheniformis . Furthermore, it degraded more than 90% 2,4-D butyl ester to its hydrolysate 2,4-D within 24 h, indicating that the novel lipase may be applied to degrade organic ester pesticides.

Rapid and efficient removal of diclofenac sodium from aqueous solution via ternary core-shell CS@PANI@LDH composite: Experimental and adsorption mechanism study

Haihua Xu,Sidi Zhu,Mingzhu Xia,Fengyun Wang

The efficient removal of Diclofenac sodium (DCF), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has attracted more and more attention. In this work, ternary core-shell CS@PANI@LDH composite was synthesized via the in-situ growth of Mg/Al layered double hydroxide plates onto polyaniline-wrapped carbon sphere and applied for DCF removal. Various influence factors like concentration, pH, time, temperature, and background electrolytes were systematically investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity was 618.16 mg/g. Besides, after 5 regeneration cycles, CS@PANI@LDH still retained high adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism was investigated by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization analyses. Simultaneously, the Multiwfn program combined the Chimera program was applied to calculate and visualize the localized orbit locator (LOL) of π electrons in DCF − molecule, which explored the π electronic structure and conjugation characteristics of DCF − molecule. Moreover, the Independent Gradient Model (IGM) analysis based on pro-molecular density revealed the interaction sites and interaction strength between DCF and LDH. The adsorption mechanism could be explained through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between LDH and DCF, π-π interaction between DCF and PANI. It was the synergistic effects of different interactions that improved the adsorption of DCF by CS@PANI@LDH composite.
