Polyacrylonitrile fiber immobilized with iminodiacetic acid (IDA) was prepared under microwave irradiation and was used to adsorb Cu(II) and Hg(II) in aqueous solution. Synthesis conditions such as time, temperature and ratio of solvents were exploited systematically by orthogonal experiment and the properties of this fibrous absorbent were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), elemental analysis (EA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption performances, in both thermodynamic and kinetic conditions, were investigated strictly and the experimental data fitted the Langmuir model ( R 2 > 0.99) and pseudo-second-order equation very well. The effect of pH on the adsorption capacity of metal ions was discussed and the optimal value for Cu(II) and Hg(II) was found to be 5.0 and 2.0, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters reveal the spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption process , due to the negative value of standard free energy (Δ G ) and the positive value of standard enthalpy (Δ H ). The adsorption capacities toward Cu(II) and Hg(II) on the modified polyacrylonitrile fibers under microwave irradiation are higher than those on other adsorbents through conventional heating. The less consumed time and high grafting rate of the functional groups may be attributed to thermal effect as well as non-thermal effect of microwave irradiation.

A novel silica gel based absorbent SG-H 2 L 1 , capable of simultaneous adsorption of cations and anions from aqueous solution, was prepared by immobilization of a ditopic zwitterionic Schiff base ligand H 2 L 1 onto a modified silica gel. The functionalized silica gels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and porous structure analysis. The results showed a degree of functionalization of 0.32 mmol H 2 L 1 per gram of SG-H 2 L 1 . The effect of pH, contact time and initial Cu(II) and SO 4 2− concentration parameters on the simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II) and SO 4 2− ions were investigated. The adsorption was fast and the effective pH range for simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II) and SO 4 2− was neutral region. The adsorption study showed that SG-H 2 L 1 had good adsorption efficiency for Cu(II) and SO 4 2− , and the maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and SO 4 2− , respectively, was the same of 0.65 mmol g −1 at 25 °C. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were employed to analyze the experimental data, and the Langmuir model fitted better for both Cu(II) and SO 4 2− . Due to the zwitterionic feature, desorption and regeneration of the absorbent was readily realized by adjusting the pH of the regenerating media with diluted H 2 SO 4 (0.5 mol L −1 ) and ammonia solution (pH = 10), respectively. The new type absorbent SG-H 2 L 1 exhibited good recyclability and reusability for 5 cycles use without deterioration in its functionality. Therefore, the adsorbent can be used effectively for efficient and simultaneous adsorption of Cu(II) and SO 4 2− from waste water. The mechanism for simultaneous adsorption of cation and anions on SG-H 2 L 1 was also discussed. This study provides a strategy for the development of new absorbents for simultaneous adsorption of hazardous metal ions and anions from waste water effluents .

Selective recognition of d -tryptophan ( d -Trp) in the presence of Cu(II) was investigated at poly- l -lysine (p-l-Lys) film using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). p-l-Lys film was immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by cyclic voltammetry between 0.0 and 1.9 V in 20 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 8.6). After the p-l-Lys/GCE electrode was incubated with d -Trp solution containing Cu(II) ions, obvious enhancement of electron transfer resistance and decrease of voltammetric current could be observed. If d -Trp was replaced by l -tryptophan (l-Trp), there was no apparent resistance and current changes. Moreover, no resistance and current changes could be found in the absence of Cu(II). It may be due to the formation of Cu complex with l -lysine and d -tryptophan. Finally, this method was successfully applied to monitoring enantiomeric composition of the d -Trp and l-Trp mixtures.

A novel adsorbent ZnAl–LDHs/SiO 2 (ZA/SiO 2 ) was prepared by blending urea mixture of ZnSO 4 and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 while using SiO 2 as a support form. The adsorption properties of ZA/SiO 2 for the removal of toxic metal ions (Cu(II) and Cr(VI)) from water were evaluated. By batch experiment method to investigate the ZA/SiO 2 adsorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) solution treatment effect. The sorption kinetics curves of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) on ZA/SiO 2 were L-shaped. What’s more, the solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics. Langmuir and Freundlich sorption isotherm models were used to analyze the adsorption data. The results showed that the adsorption conforms to Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. However, the adsorption capacity of ZA/SiO 2 compounds for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) is greatly improved. The adsorption capacity of Cu(II) is 158 mg·g −1 and of Cr(VI) is 176 mg·g −1 , which were 3.6 and 1.8 times of ZnAl-LDHs (ZA), respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized for the analysis of intrinsic mechanism and specific pathways. The primary mechanism for removing Cr(VI) from water mainly included the intercalation of Cr 2 O 7 2− and exchange between Cr 2 O 7 2− and OH − , excluding Cr(OH) 3 precipitation. Regarding the primary mechanism for eliminating Cu(II) from water, it involves isomorphic substitution as the predominant process, except for the formation of Cu(OH) 2 precipitates.

The utilization of sodium percarbonate (SPC, Na₂CO₃·1.5H₂O₂) as an alternative to H₂O₂ for degrading recalcitrant organics in advanced oxidation is emerging due to SPC’s stability, safety, and pH adaptability. This study innovatively employed Cu(II)-activated SPC to remove reactive black 5 (RB5), focusing on Box-Behnken design (BBD), mechanism profiling, application performance, and energy boosting. BBD and response surface methodology optimized conditions (2.592 mM Cu(II), 0.022 mM SPC, pH 7.18) achieved 90.08% RB5 removal (R² = 0.9997, prediction error < 1%), with the model showing strong predictive capability. Quenching experiments and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) revealed that 1O2, O2•−, and CO3•− were the main active species in oxidizing RB5 through three possible pathways. Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, and HCO₃⁻ (0.1-5.0 mM) contained in the ultrapure water did not inhibit RB5 removal in the Cu(II)/SPC system, and the Cu(II)/SPC could remove 76.1% of RB5 in industrial wastewater, demonstrating the potential for practical application of this system. The application of energy (heating, ultraviolet light, ultrasound) significantly improved the effectiveness of the Cu(II)/SPC system in degrading RB5; thus, these means can be used to assist in the activation of SPC in real dye wastewater treatment. This work provides theoretical and practical insights for SPC-based advanced oxidation processes.

Blast furnace slag (BFS) is a kind of waste produced in industrial production, as well as a valuable secondary resource. In this paper, layered double hydroxides composites (BFS/LDHs) were prepared by aqueous polymerization, with industrial waste BFS as modifier and magnesium nitrate, aluminium nitrate, and urea as raw materials. BFS/LDHs have been characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier infrared spectrometer (FT IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and the specific surface area analyser (BET). The adsorption of BFS/LDHs on Cu (II) and methylene blue (MB) was investigated by batch experiments. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of BFS/LDHs to Cu (II) is stronger than that of MB. What’s more, the solid concentration effect was found in the process of sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms. The sorption kinetics curves of Cu (II) and MB on BFS/LDHs were well fitted by the quasi-second-order kinetics under different adsorbent concentrations. Langmuir and Freundlich sorption isotherm models were used to analyse the adsorption. It showed that the adsorption conforms to Langmuir and Freundlich’s adsorption isotherm models. The BFS/LDHs composites have good recycling availability in this adsorption process of Cu (II) and MB, the removal capacity of which was reduced by 16.1% and 3.8% after being recycled for six times, respectively. More importantly, BFS/LDHs composites are not only expected to become a sewage treatment agent, but also to solve the problem of industrial waste treatment, which is a win–win strategy.

The combination of bamboo fiber (BF) with chitosan (CS) in aerogels to capture heavy metals from contaminated water has not yet been previously reported. In this study, we used a straightforward sol–gel followed by freeze-drying method to fabricate a biomass composite aerogel using waste BF and CS (BF/CSA). This material is low-cost, eco-friendly, and recyclable. In particular, the BF/CSA-2 exhibited excellent mechanical strength and strong acid resistance. It effectively adsorbed Cr(VI) at pH=2 and Cu(II) at pH=5, achieving removal efficiencies of 94% and 85%, respectively. The corresponding maximum adsorption capacities were 162.10 and 138.97 mg/g. BF/CSA-2 exhibited a high removal efficiency (>70 %) after five consecutive reuse cycles. The chemisorption mechanism was confirmed through adsorption isotherms and kinetic analysis. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed adsorption energies of −196.473 and −121.964 kcal/mol for Cr(VI) and Cu(II), respectively, on BF/CSA-2. Based on experimental characterization and theoretical calculations, the removal mechanism involves complexation, electrostatic attraction, and reduction. This study presents a promising advancement toward the development of scalable and sustainable biomass-based aerogels for water purification.

The heavy metals discharged from electroplating wastewater, represented as copper and chromium ions, is harmful to aquatic lives and human beings, and will break the ecological balance. In this work, magnetic hybrid porous structure adsorbent of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -UiO-66-EDTA is prepared for recycling copper and chromium ions. The adsorbent exhibits a maximum adsorption capacity of 212.10 mg/g for Cu(II) and 118.10 mg/g for Cr(VI). Notably, it shows excellent regenerability of 87.12% after 5 cycles. The adsorption of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -UiO-66-EDTA follows the pseudo-second-order model, where chemical adsorption is dominant and it occurs spontaneously and exothermally. Based on XRD, FTIR, XPS, and DFT calculations, the adsorption mechanisms are driven by electrostatic attraction, chelation, and redox reactions. This work provides a novel and promising strategy for designing highly efficient adsorbents, paving the way for more effective treatments of electroplating wastewater contaminated with Cu(II) and Cr(VI).

The development of green primary explosives has become a “holy grail” of energetic materials research. Cu-based 5-nitrotetrazolate is considered one of the most promising candidates due to its excellent blasting power and environmentally benign nature. However, synthesizing Cu-based 5-nitrotetrazolate controllably and securely remains highly challenging. Herein, room-temperature anodization of metallic Cu and a Cu(I)–imidazole nanowire array on copper substrates in a sodium 5-nitrotetrazolate electrolyte leads to in situ electrosynthesis of Cu(I) 5-nitrotetrazolate (DBX-1, CuNT) and its analogue, Cu(II) 5-nitrotetrazolate [Cu(NT)2], respectively. Both obtained CuNT and Cu(NT)2 films demonstrate remarkable energy output and good laser-induced ignition performance. The thermal stability (Tp = 291 °C) and electrostatic safety (E50 = 2.54 mJ) of CuNT proved to be superior to those of Cu(NT)2 (Tp = 257 °C, and E50 = 0.57 mJ). Remarkably, this study provides an exciting new method for the rational design and development of Cu-based 5-nitrotetrazolate as a primary explosive for advanced initiating applications.

The excessive accumulation of toxic copper species makes it imperative to develop smart dual-functional materials for the simultaneous removal and detection of Cu(II) in drinking water. In this work, novel core–shell NH2-MIL-101(Al)@ZIF-8 nanoflowers were successfully fabricated via an internal extended growth mode under the regulation of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to achieve this goal. Benefiting from the specific affinity of imidazole nitrogen in ZIF-8 toward Cu(II), the resultant NH2-MIL-101(Al)@ZIF-8 shows high adsorption capacity (526.74 mg g−1). Moreover, the fluorescence of NH2-MIL-101(Al) shows a Cu(II)-dependent change, causing this composite to possess superior selective/sensitive detection with a broad linear range (1.5–625 μM) and a low detection limit (0.17 μM) for Cu(II). Specifically, the hybrid MOF@MOF structure provides greater sensitivity as compared to the individual constituent (pristine NH2-MIL-101(Al)) and the mixed state, which is ascribed to the rational optimization of the smart adsorbent based on the following two aspects. (i) The synergistic effect of the core–shell nanostructure improves the preconcentration ability at the interface between single MOFs. (ii) The existence of the three-dimensional hierarchical nanoflower architecture (structure optimization) accelerates the mass transport and sculpts the final composite with enhanced adsorption and detection ability. These indicate that the smart NH2-MIL-101(Al)@ZIF-8 nanoflower could be an excellent candidate for the synchronous remediation and selective detection of Cu(II) in aqueous systems, which could be potentially useful in wastewater treatment and water quality monitoring.

Rationally designed and synthesized Schiff base sensor CMTAH containing coumarin fluorophores by the coupling of coumarin aldehyde and thiophene-2-carbohydrazide and acts as differentially selective chemosensor via colorimetric/ratiometric responses to Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions with fluorescence switchable strategy in aqueous media . Variation in absorption and emission spectra of CMTAH with different metal cations in aqueous media reveal high-affinity binding to Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions over other coexisting cations. Moreover, the spectrometric titrations and Job's plot curves substantiated the stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 for Cu(II)/Zn(II) complexes formation with low detection limits of 141 nM and 72 nM, respectively. Particularly, the responding mechanism of CMTAH toward Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions was investigated by density functional theory calculations. Notably, the molecular logic gates were established with the combination of CMTAH for the intelligentialized recognition of Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions. Additionally, the compatibility and permeability of CMTAH were attributed to Schiff base group, which exhibited remarkable responding and bioimaging in living cells and zebrafish. Notably, CMTAH could be used to image in Drosophila larvae with a clearly visible profile of internal organs and effectively capture Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions in living Drosophila larvae, which lay the foundation of sensors in the field of Drosophila biological imaging research.

Due to its small size, large specific surface area and hydrophobicity, microplastics, and the adsorbed contaminants may together cause potential negative effects on ecosystems and human beings. In this study, kinetics and size effects on adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) onto PE, PP and PET microplastic particles were explored. Results indicated that the PE and PET microplastics have the higher adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) than that for PP microplastic. The adsorption capacity was affected by microplastic types and metal species. Among the three metals, Pb(II) had the largest adsorption amount on microplastic particles, especially on PET particles. Moreover, the adsorption capacities of microplastics increase with the decrease of particle size. The metal adsorption capacity of <0.9 mm microplastics is greater than that of 0.9–2 mm and 2–5 mm microplastics. The size effect on metal adsorption was largest for PE microplastic. More attention should be paid in case of the coexistence of heavy metals and tiny PE and PET microplastics in the environment.
