Developing a strategy to tailor the morphology and sensing properties of CuO nanosheets array for low-temperature, ppb-level selective Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection is of great significance as it represents a key step toward addressing challenges related to air quality improvement, human health protection, and environmental sustainability. In this work, CuO nanosheets were synthesized via a seed-induced hydrothermal in-situ method, which lead to a small thickness of 16.72 nm, and a high concentration of oxygen vacancies. The as-prepared CuO nanosheets exhibited a high response of 4.65 with short response and recovery times of 59 s and 72 s, respectively, toward 100 ppb NO2 at 75℃. The sensing mechanism was investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate the selectivity of NO2 over interfering gases. The in-situ grown CuO nanosheets (comparable to the Debye length) provided expanded reaction interfaces and efficient electron transport channels upon exposure to NO2, which facilitated enhanced interactions between the gas molecules and active sites, improving the sensing response. Moreover, the high concentration of oxygen vacancies acted as reactive centers that effectively reduced the reaction energy barrier, enabling ppb-level, highly sensitive, and selective NO2 detection at low operating temperatures. Overall, this work provides a new material for gas sensing, which promises advancements in high-performance, low-temperature NO2 sensors

Catalytic hydrolysis of ammonia borane presents a promising pathway for hydrogen production. Herein, pyroligneous acid, a byproduct of biomass pyrolysis, was employed for the green synthesis of a NiO–Co 3 O 4 –CuO microparticle catalyst, and the catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution via ammonia borane hydrolysis was evaluated. The synergistic effects among CuO, NiO and Co 3 O 4 were found to significantly enhance catalytic activity. The porous structure of the catalyst facilitated the catalytic reaction. The optimized green-synthesized NiO–Co 3 O 4 –CuO catalyst demonstrated exceptional hydrogen production efficiency of 1153 mL⋅g −1 ⋅min −1 , validating the advantages of plant-derived extracts as both reducing and stabilizing agents in catalyst preparation. These findings provide critical insights for designing high-performance oxide catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis. With its cost-effectiveness and superior catalytic performance, the NiO–Co 3 O 4 –CuO catalyst emerges as a prime candidate for practical hydrogen production applications. Furthermore, this research highlights the substantial potential of environment friendly synthesis approaches in developing advanced energy conversion materials.

The dynamic reaction process of HCHO, encompassing its adsorption onto the surface of CuO nanosheets, subsequent oxidation to formic acid, and further oxidation to carbon dioxide, was elucidated using in-situ infrared spectroscopy and Gibbs free energy calculations. • Surface-induced preparation facilitates the formation of high-energy (110) crystal planes and (20−2) twin defects in CuO nanosheets, which synergistically enhance their performance for ultra-sensitive formaldehyde detection. • The CuO nanosheet sensor exhibits an extremely low detection limit of 0.1 ppb, along with rapid response and recovery times, enabling long-term and continuous detection. Long-term exposure to an environment above the formaldehyde threshold poses a serious threat to human health. In this study, by adjusting the concentration of the surfactant polyvinylpyrrolidone, CuO nanosheets with high-energy crystal planes (110, 20−2) twinning defect structures were successfully prepared for the first time. Through operando infrared and theoretical calculation of Gibbs free energy and adsorption energy, the dynamic process of HCHO adsorption on the surface of CuO, oxidation to formic acid and ultimately to carbon dioxide was revealed for the first time. The results of the gas sensitivity test show that the response value of the CP-4 sensor to formaldehyde reaches 129.95 (5 ppm) at the low operating temperature (100 °C), with a detection limit as low as 8.4 ppb. The response/recovery time were 6 s/14 s. This sensor demonstrated excellent stability during 50 cycles and 90 days of continuous operation. Its outstanding performance stems from the fact that high-energy crystal planes increase the active sites for oxygen adsorption, and twinning defects accelerate electron transfer. The examination system based on the STM-32 platform verified the feasibility of practical application. This study provides a new strategy for optimizing the performance of CuO-based HCHO sensors, which has significant guiding significance for the development of high-performance semiconductor gas sensors. Widespread nitrate contamination in water challenges both aquatic ecosystems and drinking water safety, and the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (eNRA) presents a promising sustainable way to convert pollutants to value-added products. However, most existing eNRA systems operate efficiently only under highly alkaline and concentrated conditions that are incompatible with real wastewater. Here, we report a hollow heterostructured Co3O4/CuO catalyst which permits efficient eNRA in neutral aqueous media over a wide range of environmentally relevant nitrate concentrations (1-250 mM). The catalyst achieves NH3 Faradaic efficiencies above 97% in the 10-250 mM nitrate range and maintains 86% even at 1 mM nitrate. Furthermore, the catalyst showed excellent stability over 100 hours of continuous operation. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis suggests that the hollow architecture creates a spatially confined microenvironment that accelerates the hydrogenation of NOx intermediates toward NH₃, and density functional theory calculations indicate the ensemble effect of Co3O4/CuO interface in reducing the free-energy changes of key nitrate reduction steps. This work highlights a structure engineering strategy in electrocatalysts for efficient nitrate remediation and wastewater treatment.

Abstract Selective detection of trace (weakly reducing) dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in highly humid exhaled breath using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors, with the presence of strong reducing H2S interference gas, is essential for the early diagnosis of hepatic diseases. However, it remains a big challenge in principle. Herein, a bilayer MOS sensor with a Pd–WO3 sensing film and a CuO/Al2O3 filtering overlayer was proposed. The temperature-dependent H2S catalytic oxidation experiment suggests that CuO could effectively filter H2S even under room temperature. Dispersing the CuO particles into insulative Al2O3 carrier could not only selectively remove H2S without significant consumption of DMS but also isolate the underlying Pd–WO3 sensing layer’s response signal from interference caused by that of CuO. By adding the CuO/Al2O3 1:9 filtering overlayer, the response ratio of DMS to H2S was significantly enhanced from 3.3 to 50.4, furthermore, an ultrahigh response (701.3) to 10 ppm DMS, and a low limit of detection of 10 ppb under 90% RH were achieved, which promises the future breath disease diagnosis.

With the advancement of automotive intelligence and electrification, ethylene glycol (EG), as a critical component in antifreeze and coolant systems, has gained increasing industrial significance. However, the volatile nature of EG poses potential health hazards, making the development of high-performance EG gas sensors an urgent priority. In this study, a CuO-In(OH) 3 Type II p-n heterojunction was directly fabricated through a solvothermal method followed by 200°C annealing. The developed CuO-In(OH)₃-based gas sensor demonstrates exceptional EG sensing performance, exhibiting a response magnitude of 21.3 toward 50 ppm EG at 95°C – 7.9 times higher than that of pure CuO (2.7). Notably, the operating temperature was reduced from 120°C (pristine CuO) to 95°C while maintaining excellent repeatability (6 cyclic tests) and long-term stability (26-day continuous operation). The first engineered heterojunction, characterized by its nanoflower-cube hierarchical architecture, not only provides a novel strategy for designing efficient EG gas sensors but also demonstrates promising potential in environmental safety assurance.

Transition-metal oxide (MxOy)-based persulfate (PDS) activation processes have demonstrated enormous potential for pollutant degradation in water purification. However, the mechanistic insight of PDS activation by a MxOy catalyst concerning the mediate role of the organic substrate remains obscure. Here, we demonstrated that the in situ-formed phenoxyl radical on the CuO surface can trigger efficient persulfate activation for phenol degradation. The formation of the phenoxyl radical was an inner-sphere process, which involved the successive steps of chemisorption through surface hydroxyl group substitution and the subsequent spontaneous electron transfer reaction from adsorbed phenol to CuO. The organic substrate phenol can be oxidized by the PDS molecule and surface-bound SO4•– through the nonradical and free-radical pathways, respectively. Such a unique “half-radical” mechanism resulted in an extraordinarily high PDS utilization efficiency of 188.9%. More importantly, a general rule for phenoxyl radical formation was concluded; it can be formed in the cases of organic substrates with a Hammett constant σ+ lower than −0.02 and metal ion of a 3d subshell between half-filled and fully filled. This study clarifies the mediate role of the organic substrate for interfacial PDS activation on MxOy and also gives new insights into the rational design of a highly efficient MxOy catalyst for selective phenolic/aniline pollutant degradation in wastewater.

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is a highly toxic, corrosive and flammable gas. Therefore, real-time and low-power monitoring under room temperature conditions is of great significance. However, room-temperature chemical resistance sensors usually have weak signal outputs and are susceptible to humidity and coexisting gases, which remain the main challenges in practical applications. To address these issues, we developed a heterojunction-assisted, phase-change-based sensing platform. Through a two-step solvothermal method, a chemical resistance sensor based on flower-like In 2 O 3 was constructed, with uniformly covered highly dispersed CuO nanoclusters on the surface. The optimized 4.5 wt% CuO/In 2 O 3 composite exhibits an exceptional response (18,108) to 10 ppm H 2 S at 25°C, along with a detection limit as low as 10 ppb and a rapid response time of 4 s. Notably, the sensor maintains a robust response of 603 even at 80% relative humidity and demonstrates outstanding selectivity against CO and NH 3 (10 ppm) as well as typical volatile organic compounds (1000 ppm). This remarkable performance arises from a dual sensitization mechanism: the p-n junction establishes a high-resistance baseline via interfacial charge redistribution, while H₂S exposure triggers an in-situ CuO→CuS phase transition that collapses the junction barrier and produces a pronounced resistance drop. Density functional theory calculations further corroborate preferential H 2 S adsorption and strong Cu-S bond formation, supporting the proposed chemical-switching pathway. These results highlight a heterojunction-assisted phase-transition strategy for reliable, low-power, and humidity-tolerant H 2 S monitoring under practical hazardous conditions.

In this work, the energetic Al/CuO nano-thermite is chosen as a promising additive to improve the reaction characteristic of μAl powder in heated steam at 600–900°C. The ignition temperature, ignition delay time, and combustion efficiency were experimentally measured. After all the reaction products were collected, the surface morphologies and phase compositions were analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy and an X-ray diffraction. Results show that the addition of Al/CuO nano-thermite to μAl powder, the corresponding ignition temperature, and ignition delay time drop considerably. Meanwhile, they also emerge a significant decreasing trend as the furnace temperature increases. At 900°C, the μAl-12 wt%Al/CuO sample exhibits the lowest ignition temperature of approximately 100°C and the shortest delay time of 9.4 s. In addition, the combustion efficiencies of μAl powder without addition of Al/CuO are quite low at 700°C and 800°C, less than 10%, while adding various contents of Al/CuO nano-thermite significantly increase its efficiency. However, at 900°C, the combustion efficiency of μAl-Al/CuO sample is lower than that of μAl powder without the addition of Al/CuO. Combustion product analysis suggests that the formation of CuAl2 layer on the μAl particle surface blocks the interaction of the fresh Al and surrounding water molecules. The relationship between the above parameters associated with reaction characteristics and the product characterization was discussed to reveal the complicated combustion mechanism of μAl-Al/CuO powder in steam.

A novel CuO-Chrysotile thin membrane catalyst was prepared by simple impregnation-calcination route, which provided new insights of catalytic membranes by natural mineral fiber for the degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater treatment . Through intermittent and continuous catalytic degradation experiments, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) was efficiently activated by the membrane to degrade p-nitrophenol (PNP), and the effects of experimental parameters (including initial solution pH value, PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, membrane mass and flow rate) on PNP degradation were systematically studied. The results showed that the catalytic membrane had great catalytic performance and long-term stability, it could completely degrade 10 mg/L of PNP within 60 min and its degradation ratio could remain above 90 % after 5 cycles. Meanwhile, it was worth noting that 0.15 g of CuO-Chrysotile catalytic membrane used as fixed bed could continuously degrade 12.5 L of PNP solution with gratifying performance, which proved that the catalytic membrane had convenient use method and great application effect. The mechanism study found that 1 O 2 produced in this process played a key role in the degradation of PNP. From the aspects of manufacturing cost, catalytic performance and service life, the novel CuO-Chrysotile catalytic membrane has excellent industrial application potential.

Copper oxide (CuO) and copper (Cu) have been viewed as the prospective pseudocapacitive electrode materials for supercapacitors. Nevertheless, the poor electron transfer capacity, loading amount, and cycling stability limit their wide applications, which can be addressed by developing the CuO based heterojunction on conductive carbons. Here, a CuO/Cu@C comprising CuO/Cu nanoflowers and chitosan-derived N -doped porous carbon was compounded by simple mechanical mixing, freeze-drying, and carbonization. The composite heated at 700 °C exhibited a high specific capacitance of 2479F/g at 0.5 A/g and excellent cycling stability with capacitance retention of 82.43 % after 10 000 charge–discharge cycles. In addition, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC), i.e., CuO/Cu@C-700//AC assembled by CuO/Cu@C (as a positive electrode) and activated carbon (AC, as a negative electrode) displayed a great energy density of 76.87 W h kg −1 at 374.5 W kg −1 and kept as high as 25.83 W h kg −1 even at 14998 W kg −1 . Our work provides a new pathway to preparing transition metal oxide-based electrode materials with distinguished electrochemical performances.

To facilitate the electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) to fuels and valuable chemicals, the development of active, low cost, and selective catalysts is crucial. We report a novel ECR catalyst consisting of CuO nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 1.4 to 3.3 nm anchored on Cu metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) nanosheets obtained through a one-step facile solvothermal method. The nanocomposites provide multiple sites for efficient ambient ECR, delivering an average C 2 H 4 faradaic efficiency (FE) of ~50.0% at –1.1 V (referred to the reversible hydrogen electrode) in 0.1 mol/L aqueous KHCO 3 using a two-compartment cell, in stark contrast to a C 2 H 4 FE of 25.5% and 37.6% over individual CuO and Cu-MOF respectively, also surpassing most newly reported Cu-based materials under similar cathodic voltages. The C 2 H 4 FE remains at over 45.0% even after 10.0 h of successive polarization. Also, a ~7.0 mA cm −2 C 2 H 4 partial geometric current density and 27.7% half-cell C 2 H 4 power conversion efficiency are achieved. The good electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to the interface between CuO and Cu-MOF, with accessible metallic moieties and the unique two-dimensional structure of the Cu-MOF enhancing the adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. This finding offers a simple avenue to upgrading CO 2 to value-added hydrocarbons by rational design of MOF-based composites.
