Adhesive hydrogel releases protocatechualdehyde-Fe3+ complex to promote three healing stages for accelerated therapy of oral ulcers

Yue Wang,Ziyi Pan,Jing Cui,Xu Zhang,Daowei Li,Hongchen Sun,Bai Yang,Yunfeng Li

ABSTRACT Oral ulcers can significantly reduce the life quality of patients and even lead to malignant transformations. Local treatments using topical agents are often ineffective because of the wet and dynamic environment of the oral cavity. Current clinical treatments for oral ulcers, such as corticosteroids, have limitations and side effects for long-term usage. Here, we develop adhesive hydrogel patches (AHPs) that effectively promote the healing of oral ulcers in a rat model. The AHPs are comprised of the quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan, aldehyde-functionalized hyaluronic acid, and a tridentate complex of protocatechualdehyde and Fe 3+ (PF). The AHPs exhibit tunable mechanical properties, self-healing ability, and wet adhesion on the oral mucosa. Through controlling the formula of the AHPs, PF released from the AHPs in a temporal manner. We further show that the AHPs have good biocompatibility and the capability to heal oral ulcers rapidly. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments indicate that the PF released from AHPs facilitated ulcer healing by suppressing inflammation, promoting macrophage polarization, enhancing cell proliferation, and inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition involving inflammation, proliferation, and maturation stages. This study provides insights into the healing of oral ulcers and presents an effective therapeutic biomaterial for the treatment of oral ulcers. Statement of significance By addressing the challenges associated with current clinical treatments for oral ulcers, the development of adhesive hydrogel patches (AHPs) presents an effective approach. These AHPs possess unique properties, such as tunable mechanical characteristics, self-healing ability, and strong adhesion to the mucosa. Through controlled release of protocatechualdehyde-Fe 3+ complex, the AHPs facilitate the healing process by suppressing inflammation, promoting cell proliferation, and inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The study not only provides valuable insights into the healing mechanisms of oral ulcers but also introduces a promising therapeutic biomaterial. This work holds significant scientific interest and demonstrates the potential to greatly improve the treatment outcomes and quality of life for individuals suffering from oral ulcers.

All-aerosol-jet-printed Fe3+ modified bilayers polyaniline flexible room temperature sensor with enhanced ammonia sensing properties

Shiji Liu,Liang Shuai,Qian Zhu,Lei Cao,Feng Gu,Lanlan Fan,Shixian Xiong

The rapid advancement of human-machine interaction (HMI), the Internet of Things (IoTs), and artificial intelligence (AI) has imposed greater demands on the ambient temperature wearable performance of sensors. In this study, the Fe 3+ modified bilayers polyaniline (PANI) flexible room temperature ammonia sensor is prepared by all-aerosol-jet-printed. The increased protonation degree of the PANI film produced by this method was elucidated through analysis of aerosol microdroplet evaporation behavior, while the improved ammonia sensing performance of the PANI/Fe 3+ dendritic structure was explained using soft and hard acid-base theory. Gas sensing tests demonstrated that the PANI/Fe 3+ sensor exhibited high sensitivity to ammonia (776 % at 55 ppm), a wide detection range (547 ppb-547 ppm), as well as excellent selectivity, flexibility, and cyclic stability. These results underscore its potential for application in ambient temperature wearable fields.

A sensitive sensor based on carbon dots for the determination of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid in foods

Qian Du,Xiaoyu Zhao,Xiping Mei,Yaqin Zhao,Chuan Dong,Junfen Li

To develop a feasible, sensitive, and essential sensor is important for the identification of Fe3+ ions and ascorbic acid (AA). Herein, highly fluorescent heteroatom co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) with a quantum yield (QY) of 24.6% were synthesized, using hydrothermal treatment of L-cysteine (Cys) and 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid (ANSA). The fluorescence emission of the as-prepared N,S-CDs was quenched strongly by Fe3+ ions, and this was further recovered by the reduction effect of AA on Fe3+. Based on this, continuous fluorescence sensing of Fe3+ and AA with an “on-off-on” style was developed. The detection of Fe3+ and AA were in relatively wider linear ranges of 5.00–105 μmol L−1 and 4.97–54.8 μmol L−1, with a detection limit of 0.10 μmol L−1 and 2.4 nmol L−1 (S/N = 3), respectively. Then, the N,S-CDs were successfully used to measure Fe3+ ions and AA in some daily food samples, and this method exhibited some advantages over most other reported techniques in the term of response speed, quantum yield, and detection limit.

Graphical The P-CDs were synthesized using Hedyotis Diffusa Willd by using a hydrothermal method of which the morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties were characterized. The P -doped CDs showed effective antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . The P-CDs exhibited sensitive response to Fe 3+ in a broad linear range from 0.001 µM to 0.01 µM with a limit of detection of 4.43 × 10 −3 µM. In this research, P-CDs were compounded based on Hedyotis Diffusa Willd by using a hydrothermal method of which the morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties were characterized. The P-doped CDs exhibited effective antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Strong electrostatic interactions between negatively charged bacteria and positively charged P-CDs, and the production of H 2 O 2 by P-CDs were thought to be responsible for bacterial death. Moreover, the P-CDs showed a remarkable fluorescent property with an excellent scope for detecting metal ion. The P-CDs exhibited sensitive response to Fe 3+ in a broad linear range from 0.001 µM to 0.01 µM with a limit of detection of 4.43 × 10 −3 µM. This study developed an affordable and environmentally friendly carbon dot as a valid antibacterial agent and an effective fluorescent sensor.

MoO2-enhanced Fe-loaded biochar promotes Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling for activation of peroxydisulfate to degrade organic pollutants

Binbin Wu,Zheng Wang,Yannan Jia,Nannan Xu,Lisha Liao,Chenyue Zhang,Zhiwei Wang,Yuanxiang Shan,Wanting Feng,Hongqin Xue

Biochar loaded with bimetallic Fe/Mo (Fe/Mo-BC) was prepared as a cost-effective catalyst for the degradation of organic matter by activated peroxydisulfate, in which MoO 2 was used as a co-catalyst to enhance Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling. The tetracycline-degradation efficiency of the system reached 74.49 % within 10 min, and it showed high removal rates over a wide pH range (3–9). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses showed that 1 O 2 , •OH, O 2 • - , and SO 4 • − produced by the Fe/Mo-BC/PDS system are involved in tetracycline degradation, with 1 O 2 and •OH being the dominant active substances. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Mo(IV) reduces Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and oxidizes itself to Mo(VI). In addition, the Fe/Mo-BC remained stable and could be recycled three times, indicating the feasibility of this system for practical applications. The possible pathways of TC degradation by this system were investigated by LC-MS and DFT calculations. Thus, the present study provides a feasible strategy for the use of biochar-loaded bimetallic materials and PDS for the degradation of organic matter.

Ozone/percarbonate-Fe3+ conditioning enhanced pressurized electro-osmotic dewatering (PEOD) of waste activated sludge: Feasibility and mechanisms

Shuting Zhang,Shuxin Li,Dongqin Yuan,Qiaoyun Gao,Yili Wang,Daxin Zhang

Pressurized electro-osmotic dewatering (PEOD) process is an emerging technology for high-efficiency solid-liquid separation of sludge and has garnered extensive interest. This study proposed a novel sequential conditioning process based on ozone (O 3 )/percarbonate (SPC) treatment followed by Fe 3+ coagulation, namely O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ conditioning, to improve the performance of PEOD. The optimal operating conditions and the related dewatering performance of O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ conditioning-PEOD process were investigated to verify the feasibility. The mechanisms of the O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ conditioning on improving PEOD process were also discussed from the enhancement of the water/filtrate flow in pores. The results showed that 53.44 % water content and 0.95 g/g dry solid (DS) of bound water in dewatered sludge cake were attained in the O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ conditioning-PEOD process with optimal O 3 aeration time of 12 min, SPC dosage of 0.0610 g/g DS and Fe 3+ dosage of 0.0310 g/g DS for sludge conditioning then 346 kPa mechanical pressure and 40 V voltage for dewatering. During the O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ conditioning-PEOD process, the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix was disintegrated, and the inner EPS migrated to the outside along with water. The values of α-helix/(β-sheet + random coil) adjusted by O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ conditioning process decreased to 7.38 and 5.12 in slime and LB-EPS, respectively, and these changes transformed to expose more hydrophobic sites. After conditioning, the proportion of protein-N decreased drastically from 81.67 % to 62.34 %, while the proportion of inorganic-N increased significantly from 18.33 % to 37.66 %, indicating that partial protein-N in EPS altered to inorganic-N. The enhancement of PEOD by the O 3 /SPC-Fe 3+ process can be attributed to the EPS hydrophobicity transformation and the degradation/mineralization of EPS by oxidation of generated ·OH. The former triggered the reduction of water/filtrate viscosity within the interfacial region of pores. The latter provoked the decrease of bulk viscosity of water/filtrate within the pores. These two effects relieved the viscous resistance to water/filtrate flow within pores and promoted dewatering.

Ultrafast thermal responsive, shape memory and solvent-driven Fe3+-alginate/poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) based hydrogel actuator

Hongcai Wang,Xiuqiong Chen,Yanan Bu,Ting Wu,Huiqiong Yan,Qiang Lin

In recent years, Stimulus-responsive hydrogels have been extensively researched in the field of actuators due to their capacity to undergo significant deformation in response to various external stimuli. However, it is difficult for the existing hydrogel actuators to meet the requirements of simple preparation, fast response speed and shape memory function, which greatly limits their further application. In the present study, a multi-functional Fe3+-sodium alginate/poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogel with ultrafast thermal response, shape memory function and solvent drive was prepared via a simple method. The creation of Fe3+-carboxylate coordination within the hydrogel network, coupled with ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation, was employed to achieve shape memory properties. Moreover, the local gradient of the hydrogel could be precisely programmed by manipulating the UV irradiation time and position. As a result, the obtained gradient hydrogels possessed excellent temperature driving and solvent driving properties, which could not only carry out 4 s fast grasp of objects in 70 ℃ water, but also achieve 2D to 3D complex deformation in methanol aqueous solution. This work provided a new manufacturing method and application prospect for the development of novel intelligent hydrogel actuators

Tongue-inspired gelatin/poly(acrylate-co-acrylamide)-Fe3+ organic hydrogel with tunable mechanical, electrical, and sensory properties

Yuwei Chen,Ziyu Chang,Ying Liu,Xuan Wan,Tianyu Wang,Zhehao Zhou,Guangli Li

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as one of the most promising candidates for the next generation of wearable soft electronics. However, they face limitations during practical implementation owing to their unbalanced overall properties. In this study, we present a dynamic cross-linked gelatin/poly(acrylic acid- co -acrylamide) (G x P y Fe z ) hydrogel with tunable mechanical strength, self-healing, freezing resistance, electrical conductivity , and high sensitivity, which was prepared by incorporating Fe 3+ ions. The hydrogel was prepared based on the tongue, in which gelatin/poly(acrylic acid- co -acrylamide) and Fe 3+ ions mimic the connective tissue and receptor cells of the human tongue. The synergistic effect of reversible crosslinking, along with the modulation of rigid and flexible components enabled tunable flexible structures that exhibit excellent mechanical properties such as elongation at break (569 %) and toughness (8.82 MJ m −3 ). Notably, the G 2 P 3 Fe 0.1 hydrogel exhibited remarkable self-healing ability, even at room temperature, while maintaining a good freezing resistance. Furthermore, the G 2 P 3 Fe 0.1 demonstrated fast response characteristics along with a high sensitivity (GF = 2.75). Consequently, it could be assembled into sensors capable of effectively detecting various movements of the human body; it serves as an electronic skin that responds to diverse external stimuli and monitors underwater motion signals. This study provides new insights into the design of conductive hydrogels with tunable overall properties that can be modified to suit specific application scenarios.

Triple Effects of Fe3+ for the Integration of Mechanical Robustness, Reprocessability, and Unprecedented Thermal Stability into Polydimethylsiloxane

Ronghao Li,Junping Zheng

Despite the solution of the recycling difficulty of traditional thermosetting polymers including polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with the development of vitrimers, addressing the trade-off among the mechanical, reprocessing, and thermal properties of PDMS remains a scientific challenge. Herein, a novel “one-stone-for-three-birds” structural design strategy based on the triple effects of Fe3+ including coordination cross-linking for reinforcement and toughening, catalytic effect on silyl ether exchange for reprocessing, and free radical quenching for thermal stabilization is reported, realizing the integration of mechanical robustness, reprocessability, and unprecedentedly high thermal stability in PDMS for the first time. The PDMS vitrimer in this work exhibits the highest thermal stability among the reported PDMS vitrimers, comparable to commercial PDMS. To elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms of the triple effects of Fe3+ in PDMS, multiple characterizations have been performed from the microscopic structure to the macroscopic mechanical, reprocessing, and thermal performances both theoretically and experimentally.

The reaction mechanism of p-hydroxystyryl-substituted BODIPY with ABTS•+ and Fe3+ in solutions and in liposomes

Qinhai Xu,Kang Li,Peng Wang

The reaction mechanism of p -hydroxystyryl-substituted BODIPY (BOH) with two oxidative cations, namely ABTS •+ and Fe 3+ , was investigated in a water–ethanol mixed solution and in liposome suspensions, respectively, using different spectroscopic methods. In solution, the oxidation of BOH (with orange fluorescence) by the two cations occurred at the ethylene group (C C) locating between the dipyrrole and phenol groups and resulted in conjugation-truncated products exhibiting characteristic green fluorescence emission. In heterogeneous small unilamellar vesicles (SUV), water soluble ABTS •+ was evidenced to oxidize BOH embedded in the lipid bilayers of SUV, while Fe 3+ did not. The lack of reaction between Fe 3+ and BOH was attributed to the complexation between Fe 3+ and the phenolic hydroxyl group of BOH on the surface of the SUV. The reaction kinetics results indicated that, in homogeneous solution, the oxidation rate of Fe 3+ was three orders of magnitude slower than that of ABTS •+ for BOH. The location and orientation of BOH within the SUV were discussed based on the reaction phenomena. BOH could be as a good antioxidant fluorescent prober for ABTS •+ detection with a detection limit of 1.5 * 10 −7  M and a linear rang of 0–4.93 μM. What’s more, the amphiphilic BOH dispersed in the round GUV (BOH + GUV) could show the bright red fluorescence. This research suggests the significant potential of BOH as an antioxidant fluorescent probe for in situ bioimaging.

Nanoparticles loaded with β-Lapachone and Fe3+ exhibit enhanced chemodynamic therapy by producing H2O2 through cascaded amplification

Yibo Yang,Jia Zhang,Shihe Liu,Xin Zhang,Zhimin Bai,Shuai Wang,Kun Li,Ming Shi,Zhiwei Liu,Jidong Wang,Jian Li

The rapid, irreversible change of active Fe2+ to inactive Fe3+ after the Fenton reaction occurring reduces the chemodynamic therapeutic (CDT) effect. Therefore, manipulation of the tumor microenvironment to provide sufficient hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) while maintaining metal ion catalyst activity is critical for effective CDT. Here, β-Lapachone (LPC) was loaded by mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and coated with polydopamine (PDA) to further chelate Fe3+ and link aptamer AS1411, and a pH-controlled released, chemotherapy-photothermal therapy (PTT)-enhanced CDT-small molecule therapy combination drug delivery system with passive and active tumor targeting was engineered (designated as β-LPC@MSN@PDA/Fe3+-AS1411, LMPFA). The results showed that LFMPA nanoparticles massively accumulated in tumor tissues to achieve tumor targeting through AS1411 mediating and enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Subsequently, PDA released Fe3+ and LPC through acid response to exhibited CDT and chemotherapeutic therapy. Meanwhile, the photothermal effect of PDA promoted the release of LPC from the pores of MSN. LPC exerted chemotherapy effect and cyclically producing of H2O2 by the catalysis of NQO1, which enhanced the CDT activated by Fe3+. In addition, while serving as a targeted ligand, AS1411 could also exhibit a small molecule therapeutic effect by binding to nucleoli of tumor cells. This unique nano delivery system achieved the combination of chemotherapy, PTT, enhanced CDT and small molecule therapy, and fought against malignant tumors synergistically through multi-target and multi-dimension.

Surfactant-regulated self-assembly of copper nanoclusters into high fluorescent micron-scale hexagonal plates for Fe3+ detection

Chong Liu,Zhicheng Wang,Na Zhang,Yue Li,Shulin Li,Xia Xin

The precise synthesis and self-assembly of metal nanoclusters (NCs) featuring customized morphologies and structures, represent a crucial step in the exploration of structure-property relationships and the discovery of new functionalities. This study presents a strategy to induce the self-assembly of copper nanoclusters ( Cu-NCs , Cu 4 I 4 (PPh 3 ) 4 ) into stable and highly fluorescent regular micron level hexagonal plates by nonionic surfactant Tyloxapol and mixed solvent (DMSO/H₂O). The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior markedly enhanced the fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime of Ty-Cu-NCs , from 0.57 % and 68.6 ns to 22.60 % and 2.8 μs, representing a ∼40-fold improvement in both. Kinetic studies of the assembly process have revealed a sequence involving nucleation, aggregation, oriented growth and subsequent size enlargement. When varying the types of surfactants, the formation of Ty-Cu-NCs assembly with different morphologies was observed which indicated the unique role of Tyloxapol in directing the formation of hexagonal plates. It is noteworthy that the Ty-Cu-NCs assembly exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe³⁺ ions, with a detection limit of 1.51 μM, which is considerably lower than the maximum permissible concentration of Fe³⁺ in tap water as per health standards. The combination of high fluorescence properties and selective ion detection capabilities renders these Ty-Cu-NCs assembly promising candidates for applications in ion sensing and anti-counterfeiting technologies.
