In order to inhibit the spoilage of the packaged food , a gas phase controlled-release low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film containing carvacrol loaded with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was prepared and studied in this work. HNTs were etched by 4 mol/L hydrochloric acid to obtain HNT-4M, which increased the carvacrol loading capacity. Then, it was characterized before and after loading with carvacrol by transmission electron microscopy , nitrogen adsorption isotherms, and thermogravimetric analysis . A new LDPE film containing carvacrol adsorbed on HNT-4M was prepared by extrusion, and the physical properties were studied. In addition, the release rate of carvacrol in the film was measured, and the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the film were evaluated. The results showed that the carvacrol load of HNT increased from 6.7% to 24.2% after acid etching. The diffusion coefficient of carvacrol from the active film containing HNT-4 M/carvacrol was 9.546 × 10 -12 cm 2 ·s -1 , which was decreased by 57.3% compared with the films directly adding carvacrol. Moreover, according to the DPPH radical scavenging assay and micro-atmosphere diffusion antibacterial test, it was verified that carvacrol retained its antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity in the new film.

Polyaniline-modified magnetic halloysite nanotube composites (MHNTs@PANI) were evaluated for the first time as an efficient adsorbent for the magnetic micro-solid-phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from beer samples prior to gas chromatography-mass spectrometric detection. MHNTs@PANI were prepared from naturally available material halloysite by coating magnetic HNTs with polyaniline. After characterization, MHNTs@PANI were used to extract fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, benz [a] anthracene, and chrysene via π-π and hydrophobic interaction between PANI and analytes. The effects of the amount of adsorbent, ionic strength, type of eluent, extraction time, and desorption time were investigated. Under optimum conditions, good linearity was obtained for the analytes in the concentration range of 0.05–100 μg L −1 with R 2 between 0.9962 and 0.9991. The limits of detection were in the range of 1.64–14.20 ng L −1 and the spiked recoveries ranged from 78.8 to 114.6%. The proposed method proved to be efficient, rapid, sensitive, and reliable, which has been successfully applied to the determination of PAHs in eight brands of beer samples.

Oil/water emulsion sewage separation in strong corrosive and high-temperature harsh environment is a big challenge for polymer-based filtration membrane system due to the intrinsic defect of polymers. In this work, we demonstrated novel thermally and chemically stable composite membranes consisting of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) intercalated graphene oxide (GO) coating on porous poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) nanofibrous mat, which were prepared by controlled assembly of HNTs intercalated GO (skin layer) onto the surface of electrospun PEN nanofibrous mats (supporting layer) and further mussel-inspired polydopamine coating. Typically, the micro-/nano-rough structure and hydrophilic property of polydopamine contributed to super-hydrophilic and underwater super-oleophobic nature of composite membranes. Therefore, the resulting composite membranes exhibited high preferable rejection ratio (more than 99.0%) and remarkable antifouling performance for various oil/water emulsions. Furthermore, flexible channel control of skin layer by intercalation of HNTs, porous PEN supporting layer, and super-wetting property endowed the composite membranes with high permeate flux (1130.56 L/m 2 h). More importantly, the resulting composite membranes could separate various high-temperature (90 °C), strong corrosive acidic (pH = 1), and basic (pH = 14) oily emulsions with high separation efficiency and excellent reusability, showing promising application for water cleaning and resource recovery.

In this study, a modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous quantification of 16 pesticide residues in three typical vegetable matrices, using amino-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-NQ-62) as a novel cleanup adsorbent. Three modified HNTs, namely HNTs-KH-540, HNTs-KH-792, and HNTs-NQ-62, were synthesized and systematically compared. The results demonstrated that HNTs-NQ-62 yielded lower matrix effects (MEs) values than HNTs-KH-540 and HNTs-KH-792 and exhibited a greater capacity to alleviate matrix interferences. Method validation confirmed that the proposed method achieved favorable linearity, with correlation coefficients ( R 2 ) higher than 0.9989 for all target pesticides. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.02 to 1.5 μg/kg and from 0.06 to 5.0 μg/kg, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries of 80.8%-113.7% were obtained, while the intraday and interday relative standard deviations (RSDs) were below 8.8% and 7.2%, respectively. Comparative tests further revealed that HNTs-NQ-62 performed better than the commercial adsorbent in mitigating MEs to a certain extent. This study indicates that HNTs-NQ-62 holds a great promise as a favorable alternative to conventional QuEChERS cleanup adsorbents and that the developed method provides reliable analytical performance for the quantification of the 16 target pesticides in vegetable matrices.

With the assistance of machine learning (ML), black phosphorene (BP) stabilized by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is used to modify halloysite nanotube (HNT) to obtain highly conductive nanomaterials, HNT/BP-AgNPs, which are morphologically characterized and elementally analyzed. Artificial neural network (ANN) and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) are adopted for the intelligent and rapid analysis of maleic hydrazide (MH). An ultra-portable electrochemical sensor bases on HNT/BP-AgNPs modifying screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE), smartphone and mini-palm potentiostat for detection of MH in the linear range 0.7–55 μM with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3 μM. For comparison, a traditional electrochemical sensor is fabricated by glass carbon electrode (GCE), desktop computer and large electrochemical potentiostat, and the linear range is 0.3–600 μM with low LOD of 0.1 μM. The ultra-portable electrochemical sensor combined with ML for the detection of MH in sweat potato and carrot gain satisfactory recoveries.

In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) loose nanofiltration (NF) hollow fiber membranes were fabricated by constructing ZIF-8 functional layer on the PVDF supporting membranes based on the vacuum-assisted assembly process. The ZIF-8 synthesis was completed in a water system, and the synthesized ZIF-8 suspension was directly added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) aqueous solution system without drying to prepare the casting solution, which could solve the agglomeration and poor dispersion problem of ZIF-8 particles. In addition, the embedded HNTs and the loaded PVA among the ZIF-8 layer could improve the bonding strength between the ZIF-8 layer and the supporting membranes. After constructing ZIF-8 functional layer, the pore size of supporting membranes decreased from more than 300 nm to several nanometers. Furthermore, the water contact angle reduced from 91.1° to 54.2°. Applied to treat dye wastewater, the prepared ZIF-8/PVDF membranes maintained high dye rejection (˃99.0 %) for Congo red (CR), but low salt rejection for NaCl (about 2 %). In addition, the flux could reach 21.6 L m -2 h −1 after continuous filtration 360 min, exhibiting a potential for treating the dye/salt wastewater. In particular, there were no organic solvents used in the work, which provided a promising idea for solvent-free fabrication of loose NF membranes.

Uric acid (UA), a waste product of purine derivatives catabolism, is one of the main culprits of gout. In this paper, a simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous voltammetric detection of UA and the most common purine derivatives like guanine (G) and adenine (A) in human serum and lettuce samples was successfully realized using glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with the water-processable nanotubular composites consisting of both halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes ( f MWCNTs) that were well dispersed by carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). A water-processable HNTs hybrid nanotubes with f MWCNTs were successfully prepared using CMC assist, and the CMC-HNTs- f MWCNTs composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy , cyclic voltammetry and chronocoulometry . CMC-HNTs- f MWCNTs/GCE displayed enhanced electrode stability in water, effective surface area, adhesive property and adsorption capacity, and electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of UA, G and A, which could simultaneously detected three purine derivatives in linear ranges from 1 to 130 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 μM for UA, 0.05 to 9 μM with LOD of 0.018 μM for G, and 0.3 to 25 μM with LOD of 0.19 μM for A, respectively. The as-fabricated sensor displayed high sensitivity, low detection limit, good sensing stability, remarkable feasibility, and satisfactory practicality.

Determining the hydrophilic and hydrophobic antibiotics in milk and related products poses significant challenges due to their polarity differences and trace levels. Herein, we proposed a halloysite nanotubes-based hybrid fluorous monolith (HNTs-PFOTS monolith) as a sorbent for spin-tip solid-phase extraction (SPE). Leveraging the perfluorooctyl groups of the HNTs-PFOTS monolith, antibiotics can be adsorbed through hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions. An analytical method was developed by combining the HNTs-PFOTS monolith-based spin-tip SPE method with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Under optimized conditions, the method exhibited excellent purification capabilities, low detection limits (0.01–0.03 μg/kg), high recoveries (80.0–112.3 %), and satisfactory reproducibility (intra-day RSDs of 0.4–8.8 % and inter-day RSDs of 1.0–10.9 %) for hydrophilic and hydrophobic antibiotics in milk and milk product samples. This study offers a novel approach for developing sorbents targeting antibiotics and provides a new analytical method for determining hydrophilic and hydrophobic antibiotics in food products.
