A metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), cauliflower-like MIL-100(Cr), has been facilely prepared through simple reflux method for the first time and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM and XPS. The MOFs was found to be useful for the simultaneous and selective electrochemical detection of microgram Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), and Hg(II) in aqueous solution. The detection was performed by the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The MIL-100(Cr) modified electrode showed an excellent selectivity and stability for Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Hg 2+ determinations. The electrochemical properties and applications of the modified electrode were studied. Operational parameters such as pH, deposition potential and deposition time were optimized for the purpose of determination of traces of metal ions .

Graphical Core–shell magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles are functionalized with sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups and employed to capture heavy metal ions in aqueous media. The magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles can be easily separated with an external magnet and possess rapid removal kinetics, high adsorption capacities, and removal efficiencies for Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions from aqueous solution. Core–shell magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles functionalized with sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups were synthesized and employed to capture heavy metal ions in aqueous media. The Fe 3 O 4 cores possess unique magnetic properties for adsorbent separation, and the –SO 3 H and –COOH groups attached to the surface of the carbon shells determine the efficiency of heavy metal ion removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions can be completely and quickly removed by the Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles. The equilibrium was established within 5 min, and the maximum adsorption capacities of the Fe 3 O 4 @C nanoparticles toward Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions were 90.7, 83.1, and 39.7 mg/g, respectively. The removal efficiencies were 96.3, 98.1, and 93.8 % for Pb 2+ , Hg 2+ , and Cd 2+ ions, respectively. This work provides a facile and general approach to synthesize magnetic functional nanocomposites for wastewater treatment.

Mercury (Hg) is the most toxic heavy metal and can lead to severe irreversible injury to human health and serious pollution. It is of great significance to explore precise and facile detection methods for preventing environmental pollution and ecological problems. Herein, silicon-doped carbon dots (Si-CDs) with bright blue emission were fabricated and employed as a fluorescent probe for the quantitative detection of Hg2+. Possessing high photostability and excellent solubility in water, the Si-CDs exhibit an efficient response to Hg2+ by a “on–off” switching strategy. As a sensing probe, Si-CDs exhibit a good linear relationship with Hg2+ in the concentration range of 0.008–0.4 μM with a limit of detection of 33 nM. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to monitor Hg2+ in different real water samples with satisfactory recoveries of 96.2%–99.5%, demonstrating their excellent accuracy and environment tolerance. Notably, the Si-CD powder obtained by lyophilization can visualize latent fingerprints with second-level details. The results serve to underscore how CDs designed for multiple applications in detection can be exploited to provide promising multi-functional fluorescent materials.

Efficient preconcentration is critical for sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of metal ions, but rapid specific enrichment with depressed absorption of interfering ions at the electrode is challenging. Here, we proposed an electric field-induced specific preconcentration to boost the analytical performance of DNA-based electrochemical sensors for Hg2+ detection. As for such preconcentration, a positive external electric field was first used to enrich Hg2+ at an electrode assembled with T-rich DNA, thus boosting T–Hg2+–T recognitions. The following applied inverse electric field strips the nonspecifically absorbed Hg2+ and other interfering ions, thus depressing matrix interferences via self-cleaning. Based on this principle, we designed a portable device to realize programmable control of electric fields; a T–Hg2+–T recognition-based electrochemical sensor was thus fabricated as a model platform to assess the feasibility of electric field-induced preconcentration. The experimental results revealed that such a strategy decreased the time of T–Hg2+–T-based recognition from 60 to 20 min and led to detection with better reproducibility by depressing the influence of free Hg2+ as well as interfering ions. This strategy offered Hg2+ detection limits of 0.01 pM─three-fold better than that without preconcentration─within 22 min. The proposed preconcentration strategy offers a new way to enhance the analytical performance of sensing at the solid–liquid interface.

The poor stability and aqueous-quenching of fluorescence of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) hinder their application in bio-detection and bio-imaging. Herein, through the synergistic effects of polymer surface ligand and silica encapsulation, highly stable and enhanced aqueous fluorescent CsPbBr3-mPEG@SiO2 NCs were synthesized and used as a novel “on–off–on” fluorescent probe for highly sensitive and selective detection of mercury ions (Hg2+) and glutathione (GSH) in aqueous solutions. The effects of the methoxypolyethylene glycol amine (mPEG-NH2) ligand and silica encapsulation on the stability and aqueous fluorescence of the CsPbBr3 NCs were studied. It indicated that the aqueous fluorescence of perovskite NCs was increased by 2.59 times. The water stability was also greatly improved, with the NCs maintaining 73% of their original fluorescence after storage for 30 days in water. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses further demonstrated that the NCs were successfully passivated by mPEG-NH2 and silica. The fluorescence of the CsPbBr3-mPEG@SiO2 nanocrystals was effectively quenched by Hg2+ which is attributed to the electron transfer process between NCs and Hg2+. Then, through the interaction between Hg2+ and GSH, the restoration of fluorescence for CsPbBr3-mPEG@SiO2 was realized. The “on–off–on” fluorescent probe can be used for the detection of Hg2+ and GSH with a low detection limit of 0.08 nM and 0.19 μM, respectively. It also shows a fast response time and high accuracy for practical sample detection. The simple and sensitive fluorescent probe of CsPbBr3-mPEG@SiO2 shows great potential in environmental and biological sensing.

Multi-component polymers (MCPs) incorporate multiple components into the main chain or pendant group and have special functions. In this work, the small-molecule fluorescent boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY), with ester groups and/or alkoxyl long chains, was synthesized first. Then, this small-molecule BODIPY and the components containing CC bonds (HD and PD) were reacted via the Heck coupling reaction to obtain macromolecular probes that perform different functions. With the help of ester groups and alkoxyl “tail”, polymers MCP1 and MCP2 were soluble in a variety of water-miscible organic solvents. Moreover, MCP3 and MCP4 were completely soluble in water. These macromolecular probes showed sensitive and selective recognition toward Hg2+/Hg+ because of the introduced components (HD and PD) containing CC bonds. After binding to Hg2+/Hg+, MCP1 and MCP2 demonstrated fluorescence quenching and color changes, which allowed the dual-channel specific detection of Hg2+/Hg+. Compared with the probes containing HD, the probes containing PD showed higher sensitivity, and the good recognition ability caused the detection limit to be as low as 0.32 μM, which may be due to the “molecular wire” mechanism. The small-molecule components with different functional groups were polymerized into fluorescent polymer materials. This methodology endows the polymer probe with good solubility and high sensitivity, and the as-prepared polymers could sense metal ions in aqueous environments.

Mercury detection remains an important task because of its high toxicity. Herein a new dual-signal probe based on a boric acid (BA)-functionalized lanthanide metal–organic framework (BA-Eu-MOF) was developed for the detection of Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ ions for the first time. The BA-Eu-MOF was synthesized by coordination of Eu3+ with 5-boronobezene-1, 3-dicarboxylic acid (5-bop) through a one-pot method. The 5-bop ligand not only acted as the “antenna” to sensitize the luminescence of Eu3+ but also provided reaction sites for Hg2+ and CH3Hg+. Owing to the electron-withdrawing effect of the BA group, the “antenna” effect of the ligand was passivating and the BA-Eu-MOF showed weak red emission in water. Upon addition of Hg2+ or CH3Hg+ into the system, a transmetalation reaction took place, i.e., BA groups were replaced by Hg2+ or CH3Hg+; therefore, the “antenna” effect of the ligand was triggered, leading to the enhancement of red emission. As Hg2+ or CH3Hg+ concentration increased, the red emission was gradually enhanced, and the color change was also observed with the naked eye under 365 nm ultraviolet light. Owing to the porous characteristics and the surface effect of the MOF, as well as the unique transmetalation reaction between the BA group and Hg2+ or CH3Hg+, the developed nanoprobe showed excellent characteristics for simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and CH3Hg+, such as simple preparation, convenient operation, “turn-on” signal output, high sensitivity, and selectivity. The unique features of the BA-Eu-MOF make it an attractive probe for monitoring Hg2+ and CH3Hg+.

It is urgent and important to detect heavy metals in environments. In this work, novel reaction-based fluorescent probes were obtained by Schiff base reaction. The probes with Schiff base moiety (-C=N-) undergo irreversible hydrolysis in the presence of Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ . They exhibit perfect high selectivity and sensitivity to Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ ions. Upon the addition of Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ , fluorescence intensity of the probes increased notably. And the color of the probe changes from brown to bright green under UV light, which can realize “naked eye” detection. In addition, Schiff base group was introduced into polyurethane chain through condensation polymerization reaction . As expected, the fluorescent polyurethane probe (P2) maintained the detection performance of its original small molecules (BSD). Even more P2 showed a more sensitive detection effect than BSD, and the detection limits of P2 for Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ reach 0.19 μM and 0.21 μM, respectively. It indicates that Reaction-based probes could be a useful tool for the detection of Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ .

Here, we proposed a novel dual-channel biosensor for rapid and sensitive detection of Hg 2+ . Compared with the previous biosensors, the [email protected] /graphene-upconversion ( [email protected] ) was prepared via a facile method and acted as a versatile signal indicator that can simultaneously readout surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and fluorescence signals for Hg 2+ detection. In this strategy, the core shell magnetite colloid nanocrystal clusters-polymethacrylic acid magnetic beads (MCNCs/PMAA MBs) were synthesized and conjugated with aptamer to specific capture the Hg 2+ . The dual-channel biosensor was thus fabricated by immobilizing the [email protected] onto the surface of MBs through the complementary pairing of aptamer and complementary DNA (cDNA). Upon Hg 2+ incubation, Hg 2+ preferably bound to the MBs-aptamer, resulting in the subsequent release of preloaded [email protected] into supernatants. Under magnetic attraction, the MBs-aptamer was accumulated immediately, resulting in the concentration of Hg 2+ become homodromous proportional to the dual channel intensity of the supernatants. Under the optimized conditions, the dual channel biosensor achieved excellent performances for Hg 2+ with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.33 and 1 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, the feasibility of the biosensor to qualify Hg 2+ was also established in spiked tap water and milk samples. This strategy may provide a bridge between a highly sensitive fluorescence assay and a rapid SERS assay, it can broaden the applicability of Hg 2+ detection, which can be easy to detect Hg 2+ in real samples by coupling with SERS or fluorescence assay.

The solvated mercuric ion (Hg 2+ ) from industrial pollutants are highly toxic to the ecological environment and human health. Driven by urgent need for the selective and sensitive detection of Hg 2+ , a magnetic relaxation switching (MRS) based on Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) was designed. Practically, the concentrations of Hg 2+ in industrial pollutant is usually much higher than the detection range. Thus, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 NPs to enable the visual detection of [email protected] 3 O 4 NPs. The presence of Hg 2+ in sample can specifically cause the aggregation of [email protected] 3 O 4 -aptamers NPs through T-Hg 2+ -T base pairs, leading to the change in transverse relaxation time T 2 value of detection solution. The MRS sensor showed excellent response for Hg 2+ ions in the range of 10 nM-100 nM and 100 nM to 5 μM. A highly sensitive and selective measurement of Hg 2+ was obtained with a limit of detection of 2.7 nM. Noticeably, the visual detection can qualitatively analyze the Hg 2+ beyond 5 μM by naked eye without advanced instrumentation and skilled operators.

Background Recently, headspace single-drop microextraction (HS-SDME) has attracted some attention for developing sensitive and selective colorimetric assays due to its excellent capability to reduce matrix interference and enrich analytes. However, the single droplet limits direct visual observation of color change and its quantitative measurement suffers from reduced optical path length. Therefore, amplifying the detection signals in both volume and intensity is an important and challenging task for improving the sensitivity, stability, and accuracy of such colorimetric analysis . Results In this study, a "headspace-nanoenzyme" (HS-NE) strategy was proposed that successfully addressed these challenges and enabled the colorimetric and fluorescent dual-mode detection of trace Hg 2+ . Atomic Hg 0 , generated via chemical vapor generation (CVG), underwent headspace reaction with AuNPs droplet to form Au@HgNPs, thus catalyzing the oxidation of o -phenylenediamine (OPD) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . The absorbance and fluorescence intensity of oxidized OPD were proportion to the concentration of Hg 2+ in the sample solution. Due to the greatly enhanced peroxidase-like activity by Au@HgNPs, the limit of detection was as low as 0.98 nM and 0.21 nM for the colorimetric and fluorescent modes, respectively. The applicability of this assay was further demonstrated with determination of Hg 2+ in real environmental and biological samples. Moreover, a convenient and cost-effective paper-based sensing platform was fabricated for rapid on-site detection of Hg 2+ . Significance and novelty This novel HS-NE strategy combines HS-SDME and nanoenzyme-based sensing to achieve dual effects of eliminating matrix interference and amplifying the measurement signal, resulting in improved accuracy, enhanced stability, high sensitivity, and exceptional selectivity , with great potential for on-site determination of trace Hg 2+ .

Herein, imidazolium salt incorporated poly(N-vinylimidazole-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) was developed for adsorption of Congo Red (CR) and Hg2+ from aqueous solution. By the introduction of N-vinylimidazole and p-dichloroxylene on the skeletons, this polymer contained not only ionized imidazole moieties but also plenty of mesopores, endowing the polymer with excellent adsorption of CR and Hg2+. The maximum capacity at 298 K reached 503.0 and 240.0 mg/g, respectively. The Langmuir model described the equilibrium data well, and a chemical interaction in forms of electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and chelating interaction was involved in the adsorption with adsorption enthalpies of 9.99 and 17.28 kJ/mol, respectively. The adsorption was a fast process, and less than 20 min was sufficient to attain the equilibrium with pseudo-second-order rate constants of 4.003 × 10–3 and 9.830 × 10–4 g/(mg·min), respectively.
