Chemiresistive detection of H2 at near room temperature by porous In2O3 nanotubes co-sensitized with La-dopant and Pd-modifier

Xuping Li,Yanwei Li,Xingtang Xu,Xiaohua Wang,Guang Sun,Bo Zhang,Yan Wang,Jianliang Cao

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based hydrogen (H 2 ) sensor that can work at room or near room temperature has attracted an increasing concern owing to its potential application in hydrogen storage and utilization. Herein, a co-sensitization strategy by La doping and Pd decoration is proposed to realize the detection of H 2 at near room temperature (50 °C) on In 2 O 3 porous nanotubes (PNTs). The In 2 O 3 PNTs were prepared via a solvothermal method and then sequentially doped with La 3+ and decorated with Pd nanoparticles via an immersion, freeze-drying and calcination route and a chemical reduction method, respectively. The results of gas-sensing measurements indicated that after a compositional evolution from In 2 O 3 to La-doped In 2 O 3 (La-In 2 O 3 ) and Pd-decorated La-In 2 O 3 (Pd/La-In 2 O 3 ), the fabricated H 2 sensor showed a higher sensitivity at lower operating temperature. At a near room temperature of 50 °C, the response of the best Pd/La-In 2 O 3 sensor to 50 ppm H 2 was as high as 8.34, increasing about 4.85, 1.20 and 1.15 folds compared to the In 2 O 3 (1.72 at 160 °C), La-In 2 O 3 (6.97 at 150 °C) and Pd/In 2 O 3 (7.24 at 80 °C) sensors, respectively. The sensitization effects and mechanism of La dopant and Pd modifier as well as their synergistic effects were discussed in detail.

A label-free photoelectrochemical aptasensor utilizing Ag2S quantum dot-sensitized In2O3/BiOBr heterojunction for β-lactoglobulin detection in milk samples

Meixin Li,Pengfei Yu,Shanshan Li,Mati Ullah Khan,Shuang Liu,Jun Yang,Jiaqi Cui,Ling Kong,Zhiwei Chen

Cow’s milk allergy is a prevalent food allergy, with β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) identified as one of the major allergenic proteins in cow’s milk. The accurate detection of β-Lg is crucial for reducing the risk of allergic reactions. In this study, a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor was developed for the detection of β-Lg in milk, utilizing an In 2 O 3 /BiOBr heterojunction composite material. Sensitization of the heterojunction with Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) enhanced the photosensitivity, leading to a significant increase in photocurrent response. The In 2 O 3 /BiOBr heterojunction improved solar energy utilization and enhanced light absorption across the visible spectrum. The photocurrent signal intensity decreased proportionally with increasing β-Lg concentration due to the specific binding with the aptamer. Under optimized experimental conditions, the PEC aptasensor exhibited a wide linear detection range from 0.001 ng/mL to 100 ng/mL and achieved a detection limit of 2.31 pg/mL. The sensor proved excellent selectivity, stability, reproducibility, and a broad linear range, offering a promising method for β-Lg detection in real milk samples.

Peilin Jia,Dongzhi Zhang,Xingyan Shao,Jieshuo Zhai,Jishun Guo,Zijian Wang,Xinyi Ji

Hydrogen (H 2 ), as a clean energy source, exhibits significant promise in the realm of new energy vehicles. Utilizing hydrogen sensors with rapid response and high selectivity is crucial for monitoring vehicles and preventing hydrogen leakage incidents. In this study, In 2 O 3 nanomaterials were synthesized via a hydrothermal approach and effectively modified with Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles to fabricate high-performance hydrogen sensors. The optimal work temperature for the Ag/Cu–In 2 O 3 sensor is determined to be 300 °C. At this temperature, the sensor exhibited a response of 9.66–100 ppm H 2 , which is four times higher than the pristine In 2 O 3 sensor. Excellent H 2 selectivity and outstanding long-term stability were exhibited by the sensor in typical interference gas environments encountered in new energy vehicles. The significant enhancement in sensor performance is attributed to the electronic and chemical sensitization effects of Ag/Cu bimetals and the synergistic effects of bimetallic modification. Additionally, computational studies based on density functional theory (DFT) further elucidated the reasons for the improved H 2 gas sensing performance of Ag/Cu–In 2 O 3 nanocomposites. The Ag/Cu–In 2 O 3 nanocomposites show great potential for hydrogen detection applications in the sensor field.

Glycerin-assisted assembly of hierarchical In2O3/ZnO micro-flowers with an in-plane folded shell structure for chemiresistive triethylamine detection

Xiaoyu Chen,Zhuo Liu,Shuang Li,Yue Sun,Yuchi Zhang,Yan Xu

Extraordinary behavior of semiconductor metal oxide-based gas sensors is broadly applied in gas supervision, but they usually suffer from high operating temperature , gas cross-sensitivities and response fluctuations, limiting their use in expanding applications. Herein, hierarchical In 2 O 3 /ZnO micro-flower with in-plane folded shells heterostructure was successfully prepared through simple glycerol-assisted solvothermal method followed by a subsequent pyrolysis treatment. The optimized In 2 O 3 /ZnO-0.5 heterostructure with specific In/Zn molar ratio exhibits excellent triethylamine (TEA) sensing capability at 200 ℃, including a high response of 34.87 towards 100 ppm TEA, superb gas selectivity , fast response and recovery time (62 s/33 s) and prolonged cyclic stability, ascribing to the well assembly of the unique In 2 O 3 /ZnO n-n heterojunction with plentiful reactive sites, which markedly promote the absorption of TEA and the surface gas sensitive reaction with oxygen species at the close contacted interface between In 2 O 3 and ZnO. This work demonstrates a stable method for feasible manufacturing of In 2 O 3 /ZnO heterostructure with intriguing multi-level micro-nanostructure for highly sensitive TEA gas sensing application.

Insights into Selective Sensitivity of In2O3-CuO Heterojunction Nanocrystals to CH4 over CO and H2: Experiments and First-Principles Calculations

Shuai Nie,Jing Li,Yunxia He,Xitao Yin

Metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors have demonstrated exceptional potential in gas detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response time, and impressive selectivity for identifying various sorts of gases. However, selectively distinguishing CH4 from those of CO and H2 remains a significant challenge. This difficulty primarily stems from the weakly reducing nature of CH4, which results in a low adsorption response and makes it prone to interference from stronger reducing gases in the surroundings. Herein, we synthesized In2O3-xCuO nanocomposites using a hydrothermal method to explore their gas sensing properties toward CH4, CO, and H2. Characterization tests confirmed the successful preparation of In2O3-xCuO nanocomposites with different In:Cu molar ratios and the formation of a p-n heterojunction. The gas sensing test results indicated that the In2O3-2.1CuO nanocomposites calcined at 500 °C and measured at 350 °C displayed a p-type response for CH4 and an n-type response for CO and H2, allowing for accurate differentiation of CH4 from CO and H2. Moreover, the In2O3-2.1CuO sensor also showed excellent stability and reproducibility across all three gases. First-principles calculations revealed distinct changes in the electronic structure of the In2O3-CuO heterojunction upon adsorption of CH4, CO, and H2, a finding that aligns with empirical evidence. The gas selectivity mechanism was effectively explained by variations in the energy band gap, driven by electrical behavior during the adsorption process. This work suggests a promising approach for developing selective gas sensors capable of detecting weakly reducing gases.

In-situ construction of Au NPs decorated hierarchical In2O3/SnIn4S8 microcubes for enhanced trace NO2 sensing performance at room-temperature

Yuchen Hou,Yongjiao Sun,Yimeng Dong,Bingliang Wang,Zhiyuan Lu,Zihan Wei,Zhaomin Tong,Wendong Zhang,Koichi Suematsu,Jie Hu

A series of Au NPs decorated hierarchical In 2 O 3 /SnIn 4 S 8 microcubes were prepared by in-situ growing SnIn 4 S 8 nanosheets on the surface of In 2 O 3 microcubes and followed by reducing Au NPs on the surface of the hierarchical composite. The gas sensing performance of the sensors based on the as-prepared materials were systematically assessed. And the results showed that coverage of SnIn 4 S 8 and introduction of appropriate amount of Au NPs improved the gas sensing response of In 2 O 3 toward NO 2 at room temperature (RT). In particular, the sensor fabricated with 3 wt% Au NPs decorated In 2 O 3 /SnIn 4 S 8 exhibited excellent selectivity (S NO2 /S other > 12.6), high response (155.65–7 ppm NO 2 ), low theoretical limit of detection (LOD, 21.43 ppb), fast response/recovery time (132/191 s), good anti-interference performance, as well as repeatability and stability. The outstanding sensing performance at RT might be associated with a synergistic effect of heterostructures and the spillover effect of Au NPs, which could enlarge the electron depletion layer and promote the adsorption and dissociation of oxygen and nitrogen dioxide molecules.

A novel and efficient In2O3@RhPt catalyst for solvent-free transfer hydrogenation of TDC to HTDC: Catalytic performance and mechanism

Yaqi Qu,Mengying He,Hualiang An,Xinqiang Zhao,Yanji Wang

Selective hydrogenation of dimethyl toluene-2,4-dicarbamate (TDC) to methyl cyclohexyl-2,4-dicarbamate (HTDC) is an essential intermediate step in the new green route for synthesizing methylcyclohexyl-2,4-diisocyanate (HTDI). Herein, we investigated the synthesis of HTDC from TDC by a solvent-free, mild and safe catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) process using isopropanol as H-donor. Firstly, a bimetallic catalyst In 2 O 3 @RhPt with a high metal dispersion was prepared by one-pot method. The characterization results demonstrated that Rh and Pt atoms formed alloy structure and their interaction led to an electron-rich Pt and an electron-deficient Rh. What’s more, Pt could also stabilize the surface of In 2 O 3 . Then the Rh/Pt ratio was optimized and In 2 O 3 @Rh 49 Pt 51 catalyst was found to show the best catalytic performance: about 99% of TDC conversion and 100% of HTDC selectivity at 80 ℃ and ambient pressure. It was proved by the designed experiments that isopropanol dehydrogenation was the dominant step and the active hydrogen species existed in the form of radicals in the CTH process of TDC to HTDC. Additionally, the synergistic effect in the RhPt alloy boosted the catalytic performance. Finally, the CTH reaction pathway and mechanism was elucidated based on the experimental and DFT calculation results.

Solar energy powered electrochemical reduction of CO2 on In2O3 nanosheets with high energy conversion efficiency at a large current density

Yan Zheng,Pengting Sun,Shuxia Liu,Wenzheng Nie,Huihui Bao,Linglan Men,Qing Li,Zhongti Su,Yangyang Wan,Changlei Xia,Huan Xie

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) to value-added chemicals offers a promising approach to both mitigate CO 2 emission and facilitate renewable energy conversion. We demonstrate a solar energy powered ECO 2 R system operating at a relatively large current density (57 mA cm −2 ) using In 2 O 3 nanosheets (NSs) as the cathode and a commercial perovskite solar cell as the electricity generator, which achieves the high solar to formate energy conversion efficiency of 6.6 %. The significantly enhanced operative current density with a fair solar energy conversion efficiency on In 2 O 3 NSs can be ascribed to their high activity and selectivity for formate production, as well as the fast kinetics for ECO 2 R. The Faradic efficiencies (FEs) of formate In 2 O 3 NSs are all above 93 %, with the partial current density of formate ranging from 2.3 to 342 mA cm −2 in a gas diffusion flow cell, which is among the widest for formate production on In-based catalysts. In-situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory simulations reveal that the exceptional performances of formate production on In 2 O 3 NSs originates from the presence of abundant low coordinated edge sites, which effectively promote the selective adsorption of *OCHO while inhibiting *H adsorption.

UV photosensitized N-CQDs@In2O3 ordered porous film elaborated optical fiber acetone gas sensor with ppb-level at room temperature

Yan-nan Wang,Liyun Qin,Zhenyu Yuan,Jin Li,Fanli Meng

An optical fiber acetone gas sensor based on N-CQDs@In 2 O 3 porous ordered thin film is proposed. The probe adopts the hollow malposition structure (HMS) to excite the evanescent field on the surface of hollow-core fiber (HCF). N-CQDs@In 2 O 3 porous and ordered thin film was formed on the surface of optical fiber after calcining polystyrene (PS) microspheres at high temperature. The experimental results reveal the ultraviolet (UV) sensitization function for the proposed sensor at room temperature . The enhanced sensitivity is 7.1 pm/ppm, which is ∼5.9 times of the spiritual density of unsensitized sensor. In addition, the sensor has a limit of detection (LOD) of 500 ppb and excellent time response characteristics (response time 6.2 s and recovery time 7.1 s). The sensitization mechanism of N-CQDs to In 2 O 3 is explained by the results of the universal density function (DFT). The frontier electron orbital studies show that N-CQDs@In 2 O 3 has more abundant electron clouds. The good moisture resistance enables its stable performance in humid environment. UV sensitization is an effective way to improve the sensitivity of optical fiber gas sensor, which is of great significance for detecting the acetone gas with ultra-low concentration.

Directional transfer of photo-generated charges mediated by cascaded dual defects in ternary photocatalyst ZnS/ZnO-In2O3 with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Fan Gao,Jie Yuan,Xueyan Huang,Rui Lei,Cankun Jiang,Jiandong Zhuang,Ping Liu

The construction of heterojunction is an effective strategy to manipulate the dynamic behaviors of photo-induced charges. It is essential for wide band gap semiconductor to introduce defects reasonably to mediate electronic properties and charge behaviors. Herein, through an in situ etching growing method and thermal treatment, dual defective ternary photocatalyst ZnS/ZnO-In 2 O 3 with porous layered structure and extensive heterojunction interfaces has been prepared for visible light photocatalysis of water splitting. The suitable position of intermediate energy level endows the ternary photocatalyst with the ability of electrons directed flow between the different components, and the transfer mode follows Z-scheme. The cascaded dual defects on ZnO and ZnS synergistically facilitate the efficient separation of photo-generated charges through the intimate interface, and further enhance visible light photocatalysis performance. This work is expected to enlighten the rational design of dual defects for wide bandgap semiconductor.

Zn doped In2O3 microtubes derived from zinc nitrate solution etched MIL-68-In for enhancing NO2 sensing property at room temperature

Yan Jiang,Yuying Xin,Hui Zhao,Xianfa Zhang,Ping Wang,Rui Gao,Yingming Xu,Shan Gao,Xiaoli Cheng,Lihua Huo

The reasonable design and preparation of high-performance sensing materials for detecting NO 2 is of importance to environmental conservation and public health. Herein, porous Zn-doped In 2 O 3 microtubes were fabricated by simple Zn(NO 3 ) 2 solution etching of In-MOF microrods, followed by calcination at 500 ℃ in air. The experiment has confirmed that appropriate amount of Zn introduced into In 2 O 3 can optimize electronic structure, increase the number of oxygen vacancy and efficiently improve NO 2 sensing property. In particular, compared with pristine In 2 O 3 , Zn-In 2 O 3 sensor exhibits excellent selectivity, high response, fast recovery speed (32 s) and lower limit of detection (LOD, 20 ppb) at room temperature. Meanwhile, the Zn-In 2 O 3 sensor also presents outstanding reproducibility, stability and humidity resistance. The excellent gas sensing property is traced to the construction of the hollow and porous structure and the synergistic optimization of Zn doping. This endeavor yields a simple strategy for the design of high-property gas sensing materials.

Oxygen defect-rich In2O3 thin film sensor via in-situ controllable assembly for enhanced detection of Cl2 under low power consumption

Sumin Wang,Rui Gao,Yuanyuan Wu,Ting Li,Ming Zheng,Xianfa Zhang,Yingming Xu,Shan Gao,Xin Zhou,Lihua Huo

Synthesizing a gas-sensitive material for detecting Cl 2 at low temperatures remains a challenge in terms of lowering the operating temperature of the gas sensors. In this paper, a simple hydrothermal method was used to prepare thin film of MIL-68(In) nanoparticles grown in-situ on ceramic tubes and calcined to obtain an oxygen defect-rich In 2 O 3 sensitive thin film. At a low temperature of 50 °C, this In 2 O 3 thin-film sensor can achieve a response of 14.1–5 ppm Cl 2 , with a minimum detectable concentration of 100 ppb. The sensor has a clear advantage in terms of optimal operating temperature. In addition, the optoelectronic properties of the sensor, the types of adsorbed oxygen on the surface and the effect of oxygen defects are investigated in detail, and the density functional theory calculations were used to corroborate the actual characterization results with the theoretical calculation simulation results. It provides an in-depth analysis of the reasons for the excellent sensing performance of the sensor to chlorine.
