A novel dopamine-supported Mg( Ca )Al layered double hydroxide composite was synthesized by co-precipitation method. The existence of Ca 2+ and dopamine could promote the capture of uranium on the layered double hydroxides. In batch experiments, the composite exhibited good uranium removal performance, including high adsorption capacity (687.3 mg/g), strong anti-interference and good reusability (the removal percentage was still higher than 90 % after five cycles). At low initial uranium concentration, the uranium removal percentage on the composite exceeded 99.7 % and the residual concentration of uranium in the solution was <0.03 mg/L, reaching the limited standard of the World Health Organization. The studies of adsorption kinetics and isotherm indicated that the uranium adsorption behavior on the composite conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, suggesting that the process was a monolayer adsorption dominated by chemical adsorption. Furthermore, the high-efficiency uranium adsorption on the Mg( Ca )Al layered double hydroxide was mainly attributed to the strong complexation between the active sites (-OH and -NH 2 ) and uranium, the precipitation of interlayer intercalation ions (CO 3 2− and OH − ) to uranium and the ion exchange of Ca 2+ to uranium. Due to these advantages, the dopamine-supported Mg( Ca )Al layered double hydroxide composite is expected to be used as fine adsorbent to remove uranium from wastewater.

Summary Incorporating graphite/graphene into a Mg alloy matrix is a promising approach for developing lightweight heat dissipation materials. However, carbon material is inherently incompatible with Mg because of their distinctly different surface characteristics, resulting in the challenge of composite fabricating and interface controlling. Herein, a new strategy of in situ interfacial modification was proposed to achieve excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties in graphite/Mg composites. A super-nano CaCO 3 interfacial layer was reported in this paper. The detailed interfacial structure, reaction thermodynamics and kinetics, and interface strengthening mechanisms were analyzed and discussed. Several preferential epitaxial relationships of the Mg/CaCO 3 interface were revealed, which are conducive to minimize the interfacial energy, stabilize and strengthen the interface. Moreover, strong ionic bond of graphite/CaCO 3 interface was demonstrated. The strong chemical interface bonding of graphite-Mg via in situ interface modification facilitates both the interfacial cohesion and interfacial thermal conduction, which endows the graphite/Mg composites with superior strength–thermal conductivity synergy.

In this work, the anodized coating was firstly prepared at low voltage on AZ31B Mg alloy , and followed by one-step hydrothermal treatment to produce stearic acid modified CeO 2 coating with superhydrophobic performance. The anodized coating prepared at low voltage combined well with the substrate without obvious micropores and microcracks . The outer stearic acid modified CeO 2 coating with spherical morphology covered the inner anodized coating compactly. The composite coating showed excellent superhydrophobicity (CA=164.7º) and self-cleaning performance. Meanwhile, the corrosion resistance of the substrate coated with the composite coating had been significantly improved. When the composite coating is scratched, the Ce ions might gradually release from the coating and convert into newly formed Ce-based compounds to prevent the further corrosion, exhibiting a self-healing behavior.

Commercially available guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes often exhibit limited mechanical properties or bioactivity, leading to poor performance in repairing bone defects. To surmount this limitation, we developed a Janus structural composite membrane (Mg-MgO/PCL) reinforced by dual Mg (Mg sheets and MgO NPs) by using a combined processing technique involving casting and electrospinning. Results showed that the addition of Mg sheets and MgO NPs enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite membrane for osteogenic space maintenance, specifically tensile strength (from 10.2 ± 1.2 to 50.3 ± 4.5 MPa) and compression force (from 0 to 0.94 ± 0.09 N mm–1), through Mg sheet reinforcement and improved crystallization. The dense cast side of the Janus structure membrane displayed better fibroblast barrier capacity than a single fiber structure; meanwhile, the PCL matrix protected the Mg sheet from severe corrosion due to predeformation. The porous microfibers side supported preosteoblast cell adhesion, enhanced osteogenesis, and angiogenesis in vitro, through the biomimetic extracellular matrix and sustainable Mg2+ release. Furthermore, the Mg-MgO/PCL membrane incorporating 2 wt % MgO NPs exhibited remarkable antimicrobial properties, inducing over 88.75% apoptosis in Staphylococcus aureus. An in vivo experiment using the rat skull defect model (Φ = 5 mm) confirmed that the Mg-MgO/PCL membrane significantly improved new bone formation postsurgery. Collectively, our investigation provides valuable insights into the design of multifunctional membranes for clinical oral GBR application.

Although magnesium alloys have been effectively used in industry, they have weak corrosion resistance. Herein, robust Ni-thiolate coordination polymer Mg(OH) 2 coatings were prepared by an oxidation-hydrolysis-coordination (OHC) strategy to make AZ31 magnesium alloy highly resistant to corrosion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The OHC process includes three steps: I) oxidation of AZ31 to produce AZ31@MgO; II) hydrolysis of MgO to produce Mg(OH) 2 , cation exchange between Mg(OH) 2 and Ni(II) to produce Mg–Ni LDH; III) coordination of Ni(OH) 2 from Mg–Ni LDH by the 1,4-Benzenedithiol (BDT) ligand to produce LDH-BDT coatings. Potentiodynamic polarization, EIS, and in situ SRET in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were used to assess the hybrid coating's anti-corrosion performance. Surprisingly, LDH-BDT coating achieves excellent corrosion inhibition performance (99.9999%) with the i corr of 1.926 × 10 −10 A cm −2 , which is six orders of magnitude lower than that of AZ31 substrate, this is due to the cooperative effect, such as the physical protection provided by thick LDH-BDT coatings and the hydrophobic properties of Ni(II)-BDT coordination polymers. This study provides fresh insight into the fabrication of Mg(OH) 2 -based coatings modified with Ni-thiolate complex to significantly improve Mg alloys' resistance to corrosion.

The combination of polysaccharides can obtain stable, degradable, and environmentally friendly hydrogels, which have broad application prospects in adsorbents assembly. With Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ as crosslinkers, a new pectin/Konjac glucomannan/Ca-Mg composite hydrogel was prepared for phosphate adsorption by the alkali-thermal co-reaction method. Since Mg(OH) 2 can create a suitable pH condition for phosphate adsorption by Ca, Ca and Mg synergistically promoted phosphate adsorption and remained stable in the pH range of 4 to 10. FTIR, SEM-EDS, XRD, XPS , and zero potential analysis corroborated that the hydrogel used Ca and Mg as active sites to trap pollutants by electrostatic adsorption and fix phosphate through complexation to form Mg 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O and CaPO 3 (OH) 2 ·H 2 O. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to separate the recovered phosphate from the hydrogel, and it can be used directly as a fertilizer. By being reused in the soil, it promoted seed germination and seedling growth. This adsorbent has the potential for recovery as a phosphorus-containing organic fertilizer after phosphorus adsorption.

Corrosion susceptibility is a critical obstacle for Mg alloy usage in harsh environments. Bioinspired superhydrophobic surface (SHS) affords a new way to combat corrosion. However, problems, e.g., water vapor condensation and air dissolution, ceaselessly hurdle practical usage of SHS for long-term corrosion inhibition . In this report, targeting the corrosion inhibition of Mg alloy in seawater , a refreshable self-polishing superhydrophobic coating is bound onto AZ31 Mg alloy bridging via a ceramic/paraffin buffer layer to solve the two problems encountered by traditional SHS. Firstly, the liquid paraffin is injected into the porous ceramic structure constructed by micro-arc oxidation (MAO). Then, carbon soot (CS) is grown onto the ceramic/paraffin layer via a combustion method. The internal CS layer is firmly bonded due to the molten paraffin. Meanwhile, the external superhydrophobic CS layer is soft and floppy to perform self-polishing property under dynamic water flow condition. The refreshable feature endows the regeneration of SHS. Using water jet flush (5.8 m/s) and immersion test up to 168 h, Mg alloy covered ceramic layer and carbon soot (MMAO-CS) coating demonstrates excellent stability. Using diatoms as target organisms to illustrate seawater anti-biofouling property, a few diatoms are found on MMAO-CS even after immersion for 10 d due to the low modulus and self-polishing of the external superhydrophobic layer invaded by the water phase and bio-organisms. For prohibiting corrosion in seawater environment, MMAO-CS coating possesses prominent resistance with |Z| 0.01 Hz (2.82 ×10 7 Ω cm 2 ) of 6 orders of magnitude larger than bare AZ31 (42.9 Ω cm 2 ), enabling its potential usage in marine environment.

The application value of silicon-based anodes has not been fully realized due to the ∼ 300% volume expansion and poor electronic conductivity. In present study, mesoporous Si/C (MP-Si/C) composite with nanosized primary particles of 30–50 nm and pore diameter of 20–40 nm was proposed, which displays superior Li storage properties. Firstly, Polyacrylic acid (PAA) was applied to fulfill in-situ carbon coating and inhibit the particle growth of SiO 2 generated from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in stöber reaction. Secondly, Mg gas was introduced to create nano-sized Si with meso -pores and three-dimensional carbon network via the gas-cutting effect. The cycling stability and rate capability were both significantly enhanced with capacity of 671 mAh/g after 400 cycles and 593 mAh/g after 500 cycles at 2 A/g and 4 A/g, respectively, which was highly relevant to the selection of carbon source PAA and its corresponding carbon coating and Mg reduction effect. Moreover, this method bypasses the use of costly nano-silicon, which provides inspiration for the commercialization of silicon-based anodes.

Light-induced degradation (LID) phenomenon is commonly found in optoelectronics devices. Self-healing effect in halide lead perovskite solar cells was investigated since the electrons and holes in the shallow traps could escape easily at room temperature. However, the degradation in the semiconductors could not easily recover at room temperature, and many of them needed annealing at temperatures in the several hundreds, which was not friendly to the integrated optoelectronic semiconductor devices. To solve this problem, in this work, LID effect of photocurrent in p-type Mg-doped gallium nitride thin films was investigated, and deep defect and vacancy traps played a vital role in the LID and healing process. This work provides a contactless way to heal the photocurrent behavior to its initial level, which is desirable in integrated devices.Keywords:Mg-doped gallium nitride;light-induced degradation;photocurrent device;contactless healing

The Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 + x wt% ZnF 2 ( x = 3, 6, 10, 15) composites were prepared by mechanical ball-milling. The effects of ZnF 2 contents on the hydrogen absorption and desorption properties of Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 alloy were investigated by XRD , ICP-OES, TEM, PCT and DSC . The excellent hydriding-dehydriding characteristics of the samples after activation were attributed to the catalytic effect of the MgF 2 and MgZn 2 phases introduced in situ by the addition of ZnF 2 . The Mg 90 Ce 5 Y 5 + 6 wt% ZnF 2 composites exhibit the fastest hydrogen adsorption/desorption kinetics and lower decomposition temperatures. At 360 °C, 4.12 wt% H 2 can be absorbed within 180 s, and completely dehydrogenated within 740 s. In addition, the activation energy of dehydrogenation is reduced to 89.5 kJ/ mol, the optimal dehydrogenation temperature is reduced to 318 °C. It is due to the generation of in situ catalysts that weaken the Mg H bond energy, refine the grain sizes , expand specific surface area and increase hydrogen diffusion paths. However, the improvement of the thermodynamics of the composites is limited, the enthalpy is 75.9 kJ/mol H 2 .

Owing to the increasing global demand for lithium, extraction of lithium from salt lake brine water has received considerable attention. In this study, the magnesium doping to produce Li 1.6 Mg x Mn 1.6-x O 4 (LMMO) was designed to overcome the limitation caused by the loss of Mn due to dissolution. The chemical and morphological properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD results confirmed that the crystal structure of Li 1.6 Mn 1.6 O 4 was retained after Mg-doping. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that LMMO has a flake-shaped structure and the Mg 2+ ions were uniformly distributed in the precursor. The doping of Mg 2+ led to the decrease of Mn 3+ content in the precursor, improving its structural stability. The adsorption capacity of LMMO-6% was 35.6 mg g −1 , which was greater than that of the undoped sample (33.2 mg g −1 ). After the tenth cycle, the dissolution loss of Mn in LMMO-6% was 0.55%, and it is smaller than that for lithium manganese oxide (0.94%). Results confirm that the structural stability was improved compared to undoped adsorbents. Moreover, batch adsorption experiments demonstrated the potential of the HMMO-6% adsorbent to be used for lithium adsorption from real salt lake brine.

Conventional surface coatings exhibit poor self-healing ability, especially under the acid corrosion conditions, which is regarded as a huge challenge for the effective protection of Mg alloy . In this study, a smart self-healing hybrid coating is facilely fabricated, providing an excellent long-term anti-corrosion performance for Mg alloys within the harsh environments. Mesoporous silica (MS) loaded with corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) is grafted onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO), to synthesize GO-based nanomaterials , which can be uniformly dispersed in the epoxy (EP) coating through ring opening reaction and form the covalent bonds . Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) results show that the modulus of the EP-GO-MS-BTA hybrid coating remains at 2.57 × 10 11 Ω cm 2 after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 15 days. In contrast to previously reported works that achieved the self-healing ability in acidity, the current EP-GO-MS-BTA coating represents an ultra-high self-healing efficiency of 1.2 × 10 8 Ω cm 2 h −1 under acid 3.5 wt% NaCl condition (pH = 3). Due to the labyrinth effect, the impermeability of epoxy coating is enhanced by the ameliorative dispersity of GO sheet. In addition, the as-prepared GO-based nanomaterial can be used to load corrosion inhibitor BTA and possess H + ion-responsive release property, leading to an improved corrosion protection . Combining the dual effects of superior GO dispersion and smart self-healing, it will provide a green and convenient synthetic method for constructing self-healing coatings with the excellent anticorrosion resistance.
