Sandwich-like MXene/α-Fe2O3–C–MoS2-PEDOT:PSS/MXene Film Electrodes with Ultrahigh Area Capacitance for Flexible Supercapacitors

Chenglong Li,Shuang Wang,Yinghe Cui,Xiaodong Wang,Zhipeng Yong,Dan Liang,Yue Chi,Zhe Wang

The restacking of the MXene film limits its development to the high energy density of flexible supercapacitors. In order to promote the application of MXene films in portable electronic devices and miniaturized energy storage devices, it is necessary to increase the area capacitance of MXene films for the pursuit of high energy density. The introduction of α-Fe2O3–C–MoS2-PEDOT:PSS (FMP) into MXene significantly increases the area capacitance. Considering the large number of active sites on the surface of MXene and its excellent hydrophilicity, FMP can be well-compounded with MXene, and the accumulation and loss of FMP can be prevented. Meanwhile, it can reduce the performance degradation caused by the accumulation of MXene’s own structure and greatly increase its capacitance value. It is worth mentioning that the MXene/FMP/MXene (M/FMP/M) sandwich structure on the carbon cloth is reasonably designed to show excellent performance. Therefore, the best M/FMP/M electrode could attain a breakthrough in the area capacitance (2700 mF cm–2 and 541 F g–1). At the same time, the electrode maintains a fine rate capability and fabulous flexibility. In addition, the symmetrical supercapacitors also show a significant energy density of 371 μW h cm–2 (12.36 W h·kg–1), making this sandwich structure electrode a promising candidate for high-energy-density devices.

A long cycle life asymmetric supercapacitor based on advanced nickel-sulfide/titanium carbide (MXene) nanohybrid and MXene electrodes

Yangyang Luo,Chenhui Yang,Yapeng Tian,Yi Tang,Xingtian Yin,Wenxiu Que

To enhance rate and cycle performances of nickel sulfide, the two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 , MXene) with good electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability is chosen as 2D supporting matrix for synthesizing nickel sulfide/delaminated Ti 3 C 2 (Ni–S/d-Ti 3 C 2 ) nanohybrids by a solvothermal method . The Ni–S/d-Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrids show a coexistence of Ni 3 S 2 and NiS with the characteristic peak of d-Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets , and have electroactive species-on-sheet structures. The optimal Ni–S/1d-Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrid delivers a high specific capacity of 840.4 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 with enhanced capacity retention of 64.3% at 30 A g −1 and an outstanding cycle performance, which are ascribed to an integration of d-Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets that can act as electric channels to accelerate electrons transport at interface of the nanohybrid during charge-discharge processes. An increased Ni 2+ content and BET surface area also contribute to redox reactions of Ni–S/1d-Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrid electrode. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) fabricated by using the Ni–S/1d-Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrid as positive electrode and d-Ti 3 C 2 film as negative electrode exhibits an energy density of 20.0 Wh kg −1 at 0.5 kW kg −1 and a good cycling stability. Our work provides a favorable ingenuity for synthesizing advanced nickel sulfide-based nanohybrids and an alternative strategy of using 2D MXene as capacitive electrode for high-performance supercapacitors .

Reconstructing 2D MXene into 1D length-tunable aminofunctionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica@MXene/Ni structures for enhanced microwave absorption performance

Yiran Sun,Sikai Dai,Yu Fan,Jiangyu Fang,Xingyue Zhou,Ruoqi Wang,Qixin Zhuang,Jun Qian,Peiyuan Zuo

The application of two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanomaterials in microwave absorption is severely limited due to their excessive conductive pathways caused by self-stacking and an inherent lack of magnetic loss. In this work, we developed length-tunable NPMO@MXene/Ni (PMNi) hybrids through dimensionality engineering and electrostatic self-assembly, converting the structure of MXene from 2D to one-dimensional (1D) configuration and loading them with magnetic nickel (Ni) nanosheets. The hollow, mesoporous structure of the aminofunctionalized periodic mesoporous organosilica (NPMO) matrix and the three-tier hierarchical structure of PMNi generated numerous heterogeneous interfaces, greatly enhancing interfacial polarization and dielectric loss capabilities. Furthermore, the overall electromagnetic parameters were optimized for impedance matching by regulating the NPMO microrod length. The experimental results and radar cross-section simulations revealed that all PMNi magnetic hybrids demonstrated impressive microwave absorption characteristics. Specifically, mainly depending on "2D-to-1D" dimensional reconstruction strategy, the PMNi-600 exhibited an impressive minimum reflection loss of -51.28 dB at a thickness of only 1.7 mm, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.16 GHz. This work presents a novel approach to enhance the microwave absorption performance of MXene-based materials through dimensional reconstruction strategy.

Ultraefficiently Calming Cytokine Storm Using Ti3C2Tx MXene

Tianyi Wang,Xiaoyu Sun,Xin Guo,Jinqiang Zhang,Jian Yang,Shouxuan Tao,Jun Guan,Lin Zhou,Jie Han,Chengyin Wang,Hang Yao,Guoxiu Wang

During the global outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, “cytokine storm” conditions are regarded as the fatal step resulting in most mortality. Hemoperfusion is widely used to remove cytokines from the blood of severely ill patients to prevent uncontrolled inflammation induced by a cytokine storm. This article discoveres, for the first time, that 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene sheet demonstrates an ultrahigh removal capability for typical cytokine interleukin-6. In particular, MXene shows a 13.4 times higher removal efficiency over traditional activated carbon absorbents. Molecular-level investigations reveal that MXene exhibits a strong chemisorption mechanism for immobilizing cytokine interleukin-6 molecules, which is different from activated carbon absorbents. MXene sheet also demonstrates excellent blood compatibility without any deleterious side influence on the composition of human blood. This work can open a new avenue to use MXene sheets as an ultraefficient hemoperfusion absorbent to eliminate the cytokine storm syndrome in treatment of severe COVID-19 patients.

V2CTX MXene Sphere for Aqueous Ion Storage

Xinliang Li,Mian Li,Wenyu Xu,Zhaodong Huang,Guojin Liang,Qi Yang,Qing Huang,Chunyi Zhi

Despite the remarkable ion-hosting capability of MXenes, their electrochemical performance is restricted to the ion shuttle barrier stemming from the capacious surface and the sluggish chemical activity of intrinsic transition metal layers. Herein, we construct a vertically aligned array of V 2 CT X flakes utilizing a carbon sphere template (V 2 CT X @CS), with the interlayer galleries outward facing the external electrolyte, to shorten the diffusion length and mitigate the ion shuttle barrier. Moreover, we leverage the high sensitivity of V 2 CT X flakes to the water–oxygen environment, fully activating the masked active sites of transition metal layers in an aqueous environment via continuous electrochemical scanning. Aqueous V 2 CT X @CS/Zn battery delivers a novel capacity enhancement over 42,000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . After activation, the capacity reaches up to 409 mAh g V 2 CT X − 1 at 0.5 A g −1 and remains at 122 mAh g V 2 CT X − 1 at 18 A g −1 . With a 0.95-V voltage plateau, the energy density of 330.4 Wh kg V 2 CT X − 1 surpasses previous records of aqueous MXene electrodes.

MXene Nanoparticle Lattices Support Chemically Tunable Nanolasing

Honghua Zheng,Chuhan Huang,Yiran Chen,Qinglin Ji,Peng Zhou,Chao Rong,Junhua Tang,Fu-Zhen Xuan,Bowei Zhang,Meng Ding,Danqing Wang,Shikai Deng

Wavelength-tunable nanolasers, critical for manipulating light-matter interactions, are typically achieved by electrical, mechanical, or thermal approaches. Here, we demonstrate a chemical strategy for tunable nanolasing via refractive index (RI) modulation in 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanoparticle (NP) lattices. The Ti 3 C 2 T x colloidal solution is coated into a film and then patterned into NP lattices by nanoimprint and dry etching. Employing these lattices as the distributed feedback (DFB) cavities and dye solutions as the gain medium, we realize room-temperature dual-mode lasing emission at 443 and 452 nm, which correspond to the upper and lower band edges, respectively. Furthermore, the intercalation and deintercalation through solution immersion and thermal annealing are developed to effectively modify the surface terminations and interlayer environment of Ti 3 C 2 T x and shift the RI of cavities. This leads to variations in the resonant wavelength and a 5 nm reversible tuning of the lasing emission. Our work presents a new chemical perspective for applying 2D materials to tunable nanolasers and is promising for applications such as imaging, chem/bio-sensing, and optical display.

CeO2/Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanostructures for Microwave Absorption

Zhiwei Liu,Yan Zhao,Shuang Li,Tianpei Sun,Hansong Liu,Kai Wang,Xiangbao Chen

In this paper, a two-dimensional MXene loaded with CeO2 nanoparticles was successfully synthesized through a simple solvothermal sintering method. The nanocomposite obtained by mixing the CeO2/Ti3C2Tx MXene with paraffin at 30 wt % has a high reflection loss of −47.27 dB at a thickness of 1.9 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of up to 4.22 GHz which is higher than that of a similar absorbing system. By adjusting the composition ratio and the thickness of the system, almost all S, C, X, and Ku bands can be covered. Its excellent performance benefits from the abundant oxygen vacancies brought by CeO2 nanoparticles in which Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions coexist and the rich microinterfaces brought by the CeO2–C–Ti3C2Tx sandwich structure. In addition, CeO2/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites also have high thermal stability. This research extends the thought on the design of high-performance microwave-absorbing materials.

Memristive Effect in Ti3C2Tx (MXene) Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

Aleksandr Aglikov,Olga Volkova,Anna Bondar,Ivan Moskalenko,Alexander Novikov,Ekaterina V. Skorb,Evgeny Smirnov

Graphical MXene flakes were incorporated into polyelectrolyte multilayers and used as active media for memristive devices. The memristors were produced by layer-by-layer assembly through dipping into the corresponding solutions. The current difference between high and low resistive state were measured as two orders of magnitude. DFT calculations were applied to rationalize the observations. The emerging novel class of two-dimensional materials – MХenes – have attracted significant research attention. However, there are only few reports on using the most prominent member of the MXene family, Ti 3 C 2 T x , as an active material for memristive devices within a polyelectrolyte matrix and its deposition on inert electrodes like ITO and Pt. In this study, we systematically investigate Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes synthesized with two classical delamination agents, such as lithium chloride and tetramethylammonium hydroxide, to identify the most suitable candidate for memristive device applications. The characteristics of memristors based on the hybrid structures consisting of MXene−polyelectrolyte multilayers, specifically polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) are explored. The PEI(MXene)/PSS memristor exhibits a voltage threshold (V SET/RESET ) range of 1.5–2.0 V, enabling the transition from a high-resistive state (HRS) to a low-resistive state (LRS), along with a significant current switching ratio of approximately two orders of magnitude. The observed V SET/RESET difference of approximately 4 V is further supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculated redox potential. These findings underscore the potential of polyelectrolyte-based memristors, such as the in PEI−Ti 3 C 2 T x −PSS system, in facilitating the development of highly functional, self-assembled memristive devices with diverse applications.

Multifunctional, Superelastic, and Lightweight MXene/Polyimide Aerogels

Ji Liu,Hao-Bin Zhang,Xi Xie,Rui Yang,Zhangshuo Liu,Yafeng Liu,Zhong-Zhen Yu

2D transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have gained extensive attention recently due to their versatile surface chemistry, layered structure, and intriguing properties. The assembly of MXene sheets into macroscopic architectures is an important approach to harness their extraordinary properties. However, it is difficult to construct a freestanding, mechanically flexible, and 3D framework of MXene sheets owing to their weak intersheet interactions. Herein, an interfacial enhancement strategy to construct multifunctional, superelastic, and lightweight 3D MXene architectures by bridging individual MXene sheets with polyimide macromolecules is developed. The resulting lightweight aerogel exhibits superelasticity with large reversible compressibility, excellent fatigue resistance (1000 cycles at 50% strain), 20% reversible stretchability, and high electrical conductivity of ≈4.0 S m −1 . The outstanding mechanical flexibility and electrical conductivity make the aerogel promising for damping, microwave absorption coating, and flexible strain sensor. More interestingly, an exceptional microwave absorption performance with a maximum reflection loss of −45.4 dB at 9.59 GHz and a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 5.1 GHz are achieved.

Two-dimensional MXene membrane for ethanol dehydration

Yi Wu,Li Ding,Zong Lu,Junjie Deng,Yanying Wei

Two-dimensional MXene membranes have been successfully used in separation technology. With controllable interlayer nanochannels, abundant surface-terminating groups and hydrophilicity, MXene membranes also exhibit the potential in alcohol dehydration. Here, 2-μm-thick MXene membranes stacked by Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets were fabricated and applied in ethanol dehydration for the first time. Effects of the feed ethanol concentration and operating temperature on the ethanol dehydration performance of the MXene membrane were investigated through a pervaporation process. The water/ethanol separation factor of the MXene membrane increased with increasing feed ethanol concentration. Additionally, the MXene membrane exhibited better ethanol dehydration performance at room temperature compared with that at elevated temperature. It gave a water/ethanol separation factor of 135.2 with a total flux of 263.4 g m −2  h −1 at room temperature for the azeotrope dehydration (95% ethanol mixed with 5% water). MXene membranes are promising in applications of pervaporation dehydration and solvent separation.

MXene confined microcapsules for uremic toxins elimination

Xiaomin Ye,Chaoyu Yang,Li Wang,Qihui Fan,Luoran Shang,Fangfu Ye

Adsorbents with high adsorption efficiency and excellent biosafety for biomedical applications are highly required. MXene is a promising candidate owning these advantages, yet pristine MXene faces dilemmas including insufficient utility of surface site as well as limited processibility. Here, we develop MXene-encapsulated porous microcapsules via microfluidics. The microcapsules have a biomass hydrogel shell that provides robust support for MXene in the core, by which the microcapsules are endowed with high MXene dosage and remarkable biosafety. Additionally, the MXene nanoflakes assemble into a three-dimensional network via metal ion-induced gelation, thereby avoiding restacking and significantly improving surface utilization. Moreover, a freeze-pretreatment of the microcapsules during preparation results in the formation of a macroporous structure in the shell, which can facilitate the diffusion of the target molecules. These features, combined with additional magneto-responsiveness rendered by the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles, contribute to prominent performances of the microcapsules in cleaning uremia toxins including creatinine, urea, and uric acid. Thus, it is anticipated that the MXene-encapsulated microcapsules will be promising adsorbents in dialysis-related applications, and the combination of microfluidic encapsulation with metal ion gelation will provide a novel approach for construction of hybrid MXene materials with desired functions.
