Palladium Nanoparticles Embedded Nutshell-like Bi2WO6 as an Efficient and Stable Visible-Light-Responsive Photocatalysts for NO Removal

Wei Zhang,Jie Zhao,Ahmed A. Allam,Yue Xin,Jingqi Lin,Ting Gao,Jamaan S. Ajarem,Ximing Li,Chuanyi Wang,Detlef W. Bahnemann

Bi2WO6 is a promising photocatalyst for NOx removal, owing to its wide solar light absorption and specific photoelectric properties. Nevertheless, enhancing its efficiency remains a major concern. Palladium proves to be a good co-catalyst for semiconductor materials, but how the combination of Pd and bismuth tungstate affects the efficiency of NO removal and relevant process is still vague. In this work, nutshell-like bismuth tungstate was synthesized using a hydrothermal method, followed by photo-depositing Pd nanoparticles with different contents. The obtained photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area analyzer (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Among the prepared photocatalysts, Bi2WO6 deposited with 1 wt % Pd shows the best photocatalytic activity with a NO removal efficiency of 58%, which is 2.9 times that of the Bi2WO6 under the same conditions. The enhanced photocatalytic activities were attributed to the comprehensive effects of the high efficiency in separating electrons and holes, improvement in invisible light utilization and BET specific surface areas of Pd–Bi2WO6 nanocomposites. More importantly, it was found that NO2 is the main product over Bi2WO6, whereas the conversion of NO to NO3– (an environmentally friendly product) is dominant over Pd-modified Bi2WO6 due to the enhanced separation of electrons and holes. Active species capture experiments show that photo-generated holes (h+) and •O2– play an important role in NO removal. The present work provides new insights into the role of Pd cocatalysts in NO removal.

A Zn-MOF-GOx-based Cascade Nanoreactor Promotes Diabetic Infected Wound Healing by NO Release and Microenvironment Regulation

Guangli Xiang,Bingjie Wang,Wenshang Zhang,Yu Dong,Jiaojiao Tao,Aijia Zhang,Rui Chen,Tianze Jiang,Xia Zhao

Diabetic wound healing is a great clinical challenge due to the microenvironment of hyperglycemia and high pH value, bacterial infection and persistent inflammation. Here, we develop a cascade nanoreactor hydrogel (Arg@Zn-MOF-GOx Gel, AZG-Gel) with arginine (Arg) loaded Zinc metal organic framework (Zn-MOF) and glucose oxidase (GOx) based on chondroitin sulfate (CS) and Pluronic (F127) to accelerate diabetic infected wound healing. GOx in AZG-Gel was triggered by hyperglycemic environment to reduce local glucose and pH, and simultaneously produced hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to enable Arg to release nitric oxide (NO) for inflammation regulation, providing a suitable microenvironment for wound healing. Zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) released from acid-responsive Zn-MOF significantly inhibited the proliferation and biofilm formation of S.aureus and E.coli . AZG-Gel significantly accelerated diabetic infected wound healing by down-regulating pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6, up-regulating anti-inflammatory factor IL-4, promoting angiogenesis and collagen deposition in vivo . Collectively, our nanoreactor cascade strategy combining “endogenous improvement (reducing glucose and pH)” with “exogenous resistance (anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory)” provides a new idea for promoting diabetic infected wound healing by addressing both symptoms and root causes. Statement of Significance A cascade nanoreactor (AZG-Gel) is constructed to solve three key problems in diabetic wound healing, namely, hyperglycemia and high pH microenvironment, bacterial infection and persistent inflammation. Local glucose and pH levels are reduced by GOx to provide a suitable microenvironment for wound healing. The release of Zn 2+ significantly inhibits bacterial proliferation and biofilm formation, and NO reduces wound inflammation and promotes angiogenesis. The pH change when AZG-Gel is applied to wounds is expected to enable the visualization of wound healing to guide the treatment of diabetic wound. Our strategy of “endogenous improvement (reducing glucose and pH)” combined with “exogenous resistance (anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory)” provides a new way for promoting diabetic wound healing.

Constructing a catalytical NO-generation coating on a polyurethane surface to enhance hemocompatibility and promote endothelial cell growth

Yan Ji,Changpeng Zuo,Jie Chen,Qiuyang Zhang,Yuchi Sun,Qingping Xiong,Changjiang Pan

Polyurethanes (PU) is widely applied in the blood-contact biomaterials. However, its biocompatibility still cannot meet the requirements for long-term service. In this work, a polydopamine (PDA) layer was first prepared on the PU surface, and then an anticoagulant polymer with an endothelial glycosaminoglycan-mimicking structure capable of catalyzing the release of nitric oxide (NO) gas molecules 6-arm-poly (ethy1ene glycol)-Heparin-Selenocystamine (PEG-Hep-SeCA) was grafted on the PDA-modified PU surface to construct a bioactive coating with the capacity to catalyze the release of NO from the endogenous donors. The findings indicated that the modified PU surfaces had excellent hydrophilicity, selective albumin adsorption as well as good blood compatibility and endothelial cell growth properties. The hemocompatibility and endothelial cell growth were further significantly improved in the case of catalytic NO generation. Therefore, the surface modification strategy of this study can significantly improve the biocompatibility of PU and thus lay the foundation for future clinical applications of medical polyurethane.

Sensing mechanism of the zirconia-based highly selective NO sensor by using a plate-like Cr2O3 sensing electrode

Han Jin,Youju Huang,Jiawen Jian

Plate-like Cr 2 O 3 has been proved to be highly selective in sensing of nitric oxide (NO), while the sensing response of irregular shape and cubic-like Cr 2 O 3 toward NO was significantly interfered by hydrocarbons (HCs), e.g. C 3 H 6 . In this paper, sensing mechanism of the plate-like Cr 2 O 3 for selective sensing of NO (against HCs) was studied via crystallographic phase analysis, lattice fringes investigation and evaluation of the catalytic activity (gas-phase catalytic activity & electrochemical catalytic activity). The Cr 2 O 3 samples with plate-like, irregular shape and cubic-like microstructures have been confirmed to be the same crystallographic phase through XRD measurements, however, significant difference in the lattice fringes of these Cr 2 O 3 samples were observed via high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) & selected-area electron diffraction (SAED). The comparison results of catalytic activity for plate-like, irregular shape and cubic-like Cr 2 O 3 indicated that the unique selectivity for the plate-like Cr 2 O 3 was mainly caused by the electrochemical reaction specifically toward NO, which occurred near the interface between plate-like Cr 2 O 3 and zirconia-based electrolyte.

Effect of rutile TiO2 on the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4/brookite-TiO2-xNy photocatalyst for NO decomposition

Huihui Li,Xiaoyong Wu,Shu Yin,Kenichi Katsumata,Yuhua Wang

Novel g-C 3 N 4 /rutile-brookite TiO 2-x N y composite photocatalysts were fabricated through a facile solvothermal approach. The effect of rutile phase TiO 2 with brookite TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 on the photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 /nitrogen-doped TiO 2 composite was studied. The photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst was evaluated by measuring the degradation of NO gas under visible and UV light irradiation. It is suggested that g-C 3 N 4 /rutile-brookite TiO 2-x N y forms a Z-scheme photocatalytic system, which shows improvement on the photocatalytic activity than that of g-C 3 N 4 /single brookite TiO 2-x N y . By importing rutile phase TiO 2-x N y , the photogenerated electrons can efficiently transfer from rutile TiO 2 to g-C 3 N 4 , which results in the separation of electron and hole pairs, enhancing the photocatalytic ability. However, single brookite TiO 2-x N y can not remove the photogenerated electrons efficiently and the photocatalytic performances of composites decrease with g-C 3 N 4 amount increase.

NO catalytic oxidation over an ultra-large surface area LaMnO3+δ perovskite synthesized by an acid-etching method

Baohuai Zhao,Rui Ran,Li Sun,Xingguo Guo,Xiaodong Wu,Duan Weng

The perovskite oxides LaMnO3+δ were prepared by a citrate method and then etched by acid solution with different times. After etching, the perovskite structures of all the catalysts remained, the surface area enlarged apparently, and the NO catalytic oxidation activities were obviously promoted by increasing the etching time. Long-term experiments revealed the acceptable stability of the etched catalysts. The favorable activities of the etched LaMnO3+δ catalysts were mainly due to their high specific surface area, abundant activated oxygen species and vacancies, as well as the higher valence state of Mn ions resulting from the loss of La3+ in the perovskite structure.

Nb-modified Mn/Ce/Ti catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 at low temperature

Baohuai Zhao,Rui Ran,Xingguo Guo,Li Cao,Tengfei Xu,Ze Chen,Xiaodong Wu,Zhichun Si,Duan Weng

Mn/Ce/Ti and Mn/Ce/Nb/Ti catalysts were synthesized using a precipitation method and their catalytic activities for NO selective reduction with NH 3 at low temperatures were evaluated. Nb doping not only improved the activity of the catalyst over a wide temperature range but also restricted the generation of NO 2 and N 2 O. The Mn/Ce/Nb/Ti catalyst displayed 100% NO conversion from 150 to 250   °C and >90% N 2 selectivity below 250   °C. The specific surface area of the catalyst was increased and its surface acidity was strengthened after Nb doping. Moreover, Nb doping increased the NO oxidation ability and lowered the NH 3 oxidation activity of the catalyst. All the above factors contributed to enhancing the overall NH 3 -SCR performance of the Mn/Ce/Nb/Ti catalyst compared with that of the Mn/Ce/Ti one. The long-term stability and resistance to H 2 O and SO 2 of the Mn/Ce/Nb/Ti catalyst were also evaluated.

Preparation of a Mitochondria-targeted and NO-Releasing Nanoplatform and its Enhanced Pro-Apoptotic Effect on Cancer Cells

Jiangsheng Xu,Fang Zeng,Hao Wu,Caiping Hu,Changmin Yu,Shuizhu Wu

The therapeutic applications of exogenous nitric oxide are usually limited by its short half-life and its vulnerability to many biological substances, thus straightforward and precise spatiotemporal control of NO delivery may be critical to its therapeutic effects. Herein, the mitochondria-targeted and photoresponsive NO-releasing nanosystem is demonstrated as a new approach for cancer treatment. The nanosystem is fabricated by covalently incorporating a NO photo-donor and a mitochondria targeting ligand onto carbon-dots; accordingly, multi-functionalities (mitochondria-targeting, light-enhanced efficient NO-releasing, and cell imaging) are achieved. The in vitro NO release profiles for the nanosystem show that the duration of NO release from the present C-dot-based nanosystem containing immobilized SNO can be extended up to 8 hours or more. Upon cellular internalization, the nanosystem can target mitochondria and release NO. The action of the nanosystem on three cancer cell lines is evaluated; it is found that the targeted NO-releasing system can cause high cytotoxicity towards the cancer cells by specifically damaging their mitochondria. Additionally, light irradiation can amplify the cell apoptosis by enhancing NO release. These observations demonstrate that incorporating mitochondria-targeting ligand onto a NO-releasing system can enhance its pro-apoptosis action, thereby providing new insights for exploiting NO in cancer therapy.

Insights into the sunlight-Induced photodegradation mechanisms of methamphetamine in surface water driven by NO₃⁻, HCO₃⁻ and Fe3+

Lijuan Luo,Junhui Wu,Xueting Yuan,Xinyan Li,Bi Huang,Shanshan Chen,Jiewei Deng,Tiangang Luan

Psychoactive substances abuse is a global issue, with the methamphetamine (METH) being the most used and produced illicit substance in recent years. METH has been recognized as emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Research on the removal of METH from surface water is still lacking in-depth exploration. The effects of key aqueous environmental factors on the photodegradation of METH were investigated in this study. NO₃ ⁻ , Fe 3+ and dissolved organic matter (DOM) enhanced the photodegradation of METH, respectively, with degradation rates increasing as their concentrations increased. When HCO₃ ⁻ coexisted with NO₃ ⁻ , it exhibited dual effects on METH photodegradation: low concentrations inhibited the process, whereas high concentrations promoted it. The primary photodegradation products of METH, such as OH-METH, (OH) 2 -METH, AMP and NO 2 -OH-METH, were identified. The latter two compounds were newly discovered in this study. The mechanism of NO₃ ⁻ , HCO₃ ⁻ and Fe 3+ accelerating the photodegradation of METH in water was proposed to proceed via the generation of hydroxyl radical (HO∙), leading to the oxidation of METH, along with the involvement of nitro radical (∙NO 2 ) and carbonate radical (CO 3 •- ).

Discovery of NO Donor-Aurovertin Hybrids as Dual Ferroptosis and Apoptosis Inducers for Treating Triple Negative Breast Cancer

Lie-Feng Ma,Li−Li Xu,Ling-Jie Yuan,Xi Yang,Rui Wu,Shu-Min Bao,Yi-Li Chen,Hong-Liang Duan,Luo Fang,Hua-Jun Zhao,Zha-Jun Zhan

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly lethal malignancy, and its clinical management encounters severe challenges due to its high metastatic propensity and the absence of effective therapeutic targets. To improve druggability of aurovertin B (AVB), a natural polyketide with a significant antiproliferative effect on TNBC, a series of NO donor/AVB hybrids were synthesized and tested for bioactivities. Among them, compound 4d significantly inhibited the proliferation and metastasis of TNBC in vitro and in vivo with better safety than that of AVB. The structure−activity relationship analysis suggested that the types of NO donor and the linkers had considerable effects on the activities. Mechanistic investigations unveiled that 4d induced apoptosis and ferroptosis by the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and the down-regulation of GPX4, respectively. The antimetastatic effect of 4d was associated with the upregulation of DUSP1. Overall, these compelling results underscore the tremendous potential of 4d for treating TNBC.

A near-infrared triggered multi-functional indocyanine green nanocomposite with NO gas release function inducing improved photothermal therapy

Le Guo,Yi Zhou,Jiayi Ding,Jiabao Xiong,Lijun Zhu,Siyiti Amuti,Chi Zhang,Zhong Du,Xueliang Zhang,Biao Dong,Nuernisha Alifu

The integration of photothermal and near-infrared (NIR) imaging capabilities of indocyanine green (ICG) small molecules has attracted considerable attention in tumor diagnosis and treatment. However, the abnormal upregulation of cellular heat shock proteins (HSPs) induced by photothermal therapy (PTT) enhances cellular heat resistance, thereby severely affecting the efficacy of PTT. In this study, to address the impact of HSPs on the efficacy of PTT while obtaining high-quality NIR fluorescence imaging in the NIR region, we designed a targeted peptide@ICG nanofluorescent probe encapsulated in liposomes. The introduced cRGD targeting peptide not only possesses tumor-targeting capabilities but also features LA as the last amino acid in the targeting peptide, which can generate nitric oxide (NO) under reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggering. It can happen under 808 nm single-light source NIR light, and the guanidine group in the peptide decomposes and combines with singlet oxygen molecules to generate NO gas molecules, thereby exerting an elevated photothermal effect by inhibiting the expression of HSP70. In addition, the nanoprobes enable deep imaging and treatment of glioma in situ and can be combined with a laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) system for multimodal imaging. This composite probe demonstrates synergistic tumor therapeutic effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT), PTT, and gas therapy, offering a promising strategy for cancer treatment.

Surface microstructure regulation of a novel N-CQDs /C3N4/Bi2WO6 self-cleaning synergistic photocatalytic degradation of NO coating

Yanhui Niu,Wenshuo Zhang,Huiyun Xia,Ningning Li,Lifang Song,Xu Li,Liying Cui

As well known, the apparent structure and chemical composition of self-cleaning photocatalytic coatings are crucial for their application. In this study, C 3 N 4 with a large specific surface area was introduced into N-CQDs/Bi 2 WO 6 to construct a highly catalytic active catalyst (CBW-0.5), which continuously degraded 57.7 % of NO. A robust self-cleaning photocatalytic coating (CCBW-B) was prepared by firmly bonding CBW-0.5 to the substrate through a layered spraying process. CBW-0.5 endowed CCBW-B with high catalytic activity, maintaining a degradation rate of 64.9 % for NO, and most of the surface organic dye contamination was degraded after 36 h. Due to the appropriate arrangement of low surface energy substances and micro/nano particles on the surface, CCBW-B with a graded cross network on the surface has contact angles (CA) of 156°/145° for water/olive oil, respectively. The influence of each component of CCBW-B on its photocatalytic and liquid repellent ability was studied, and the patterns for the differences in coating performance due to the changes in surface roughness structure caused by different layer distributions was discussed. In addition, the mechanism for the excellent performance of CCBW-B was explored using SEM, specific surface area, and the theory of the generation and distribution of air pockets. Finally, the durability and self-cleaning ability of CCBW-B were tested, and the synergistic mechanism of self-cleaning and photocatalysis was also provided.
