Visible light-driven photo-oxidation reactions hold significant potential for the treatment of gaseous pollutants. However, the weak internal electric field of carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) leads to sluggish migration of photogenerated carriers, while inefficient electron-hole pair separation further limits the overall photo-oxidation efficiency. In this study, nitrogen-vacancy (Nv) rich crystalline (Cs)/amorphous g-C 3 N 4 was synthesized using a two-step calcination method. The increased crystallinity facilitates faster carrier migration, broadens the potential difference between the crystalline and amorphous regions, and enhances the piezoelectric response. On the other hand, the incorporation of nitrogen vacancies (Nv) introduces asymmetry, generating a dipole field that significantly improves the efficiency of electron-hole pair separation. Moreover, the presence of NV improves the adsorption and activation of O 2 molecules, promoting the photo-oxidation of adsorbed NO via the generation of single linear oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). The resulting material, Cs-Nv-630, demonstrated excellent oxidative NO removal efficiency, achieving a removal rate of 95.3 % under visible light irradiation. This study highlights a novel strategy for enhancing photo-oxidation activity through structural engineering, leveraging crystallinity and dipole fields to optimize carrier migration and complexation.

The development of new technologies for removal of NO and chlorobenzene in complex flue gas situations at low temperature is a complex and demanding task. Here, the synergistic removal of NO and chlorobenzene was achieved through catalysis assisted dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) mechanism under different conditions. The experimental results suggested that the increase of specific energy density (SED) and the loading of CeO 2 strengthened the treatment of NO and chlorobenzene. A higher degradation efficiency of NO and a lower production rate of NO 2 were achieved after the introduction of chlorobenzene. The removal of chlorobenzene could also be benefited from this process, and the introduction of NO promoted CO 2 selectivity of chlorobenzene. The XPS and H 2 -TPR analyses confirmed that the reaction between chlorobenzene and NO occurred by the assistance of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox cycle as well as the consumption and regeneration of chemically adsorbed oxygen. During the reaction, the oxygen vacancies (OVs) caused by plasma etching promote the redox cycle and alleviate the catalyst poisoning caused by chloride ions (Cl − ). Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of the resulting byproducts revealed phenol as the most significant intermediate in chlorobenzene degradation, while acetaldehyde emerged as the major product resulting from ring-opening processes of chlorobenzene. Utilizing chlorobenzene from flue gas subtly, this method presents a more sustainable alternative for NO reduction, showing promise for addressing industrial emission challenges. Graphical

High entropy oxides (HEOs) have excellent light absorption performance, abundant active sites, and good photocatalytic stability, but there is currently little research on their photocatalytic activity for NOx. This work prepared (BiCoNiCuMn)Ox by a two-step solid-state grinding and high-temperature calcination method, and its photocatalytic NO removal efficiency reached 55%. However, the catalyst is significantly deactivated during the cyclic reaction process. In order to further investigate the deactivation mechanism, a series of comprehensive characterization techniques were employed in this study, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT). The research results indicate that the nitrate (NO3–) generated during the reaction process is the main factor leading to the deactivation of (BiCoNiCuMn)Ox. The accumulation of nitrate ions (NO3–) on the surface of the catalyst leads to the formation of an insulating layer, which hinders the performance of the catalyst. This study not only provides important insights into the deactivation mechanism of the (BiCoNiCuMn)Ox photocatalyst, but also establishes a theoretical framework for the practical application of high entropy oxides in environmental remediation.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a celebrated signaling molecule involved in diverse vital physiological and pathophysiological processes. Thus, rapid detection of NO in situ is quite significant due to its large diffusion and short half-time. Herein, a new water-soluble conjugated polymer (PBFB-PDA-NMe3+) with an o-diaminophenyl group in the side chain is designed and synthesized as a fluorescence probe for ultrarapid and sensitive detection of endogenous NO via photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. In the presence of NO, NO can be specifically trapped by o-diaminophenyl group and react with it to form benzotriazole derivative, which leads to the PET being inhibited. The fluorescence of probe thus significantly turns on. Most importantly, the assay is completed within 1 min without further treatments. Furthermore, this probe can rapidly image intracellular NO in A549 cell and S. aureus bacteria only incubating for 15 min. In addition, this probe is highly selective, which can clearly discriminate NO from other reactive species such as NO3–, NO, H2O2, •OH, GSH, cysteine, and ascorbic acid. Hence, this probe with good water-solubility demonstrates the ultra rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of endogenous NO, which is advantageous to investigate NO-related biological processes.

In the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, vascular scaffold materials play an extremely important role. The appropriate substrate chemistries and 15 dynes/cm 2 physiological fluid shear stress (FSS) are both required to ensure normal physiological activity of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The present study reported the collective influence of substrate chemistries and FSS on HUVECs in the sense of its biological functions. The CH 3 , NH 2 , and OH functional groups were adopted to offer a variety of substrate chemistries on glass slides by the technology of self-assembled monolayers, whereas FSS was generated by a parallel-plate fluid flow system. Substrate chemistries on its own by no means had noticeable effects on eNOS, ATP, NO, and PGI 2 expressions, while FSS stimuli enhanced their production. While substrate chemistries, as well as FSS, were both exerted, the releases of ATP, NO, and PGI 2 were dependent on substrate chemistries. Study of F-actin organization and focal adhesions (FAs) formation of HUVECs before FSS exposure proves that F-action organization and FAs formation followed similar chemistry-dependence. Hereby proposed a feasible mechanism, that is, the F-actin organization and FAs formation of HUVECs are controlled by substrate chemistries, further advancing the modulation of FSS-triggered responses of HUVECs.

Oxidative stress and fibrosis are core drivers of post-myocardial infarction dysfunction. Conventional therapies predominantly address either acute oxidative damage or chronic fibrosis, lacking strategies that concurrently target the two interconnected processes. Here, a microenvironment-responsive nanomedicine delivering nitric oxide (NO) and curcumin specifically to the infarcted heart is presented (named C@Si-NM). Constructed from glutathione-sensitive cyclic nitrate-trimethylene carbonate-polyethylene glycol block copolymer micelles crosslinked with silica, the system releases both NO and the encapsulated curcumin upon encountering elevated glutathione levels at the infarction site. In cardiomyocytes, NO suppresses the opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore, inhibiting the release of reactive oxygen species, while curcumin directly acts as an antioxidant. In fibroblasts, NO inhibits the TGF-β/Smad pathway and curcumin downregulates the production of TGF-β, jointly suppressing fibrosis. The combined nanomedicine C@Si-NM significantly improved cardiac function in a rat model of MI after four weeks of treatment, resulting in an ejection fraction of 74 %. This value approached the normal range of 81 % and was superior to the outcomes observed with NO monotherapy at 62 % or curcumin monotherapy at 63 %. This strategy effectively mitigates both oxidative damage and fibrosis, bridging the gap between acute and chronic therapeutic interventions of myocardial infarction.

, the Cu(I)- and HNO 3 -catalyzed oxidation of 2-chloro-4-(methylsulfonyl)toluene to 2-chloro-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzoic acid has been developed with an excellent yield of 84.2% and a purity of 99.7%. The optimized reaction conditions (160 °C, oxygen pressure 1.5 MPa, HNO 3 concentration 25 wt%, HNO 3 : substrate 0.5:1) use 1.0 mol% CuI as catalyst. The dosage of HNO 3 in the new process is only 25% of the stoichiometric amount and 12.5% of the amount of the traditional process. The NO
x
emission is 5% amount of the traditional process. The oxidation of several additional toluene derivatives with comparable yields demonstrates the generality to these reaction conditions.

Efficient photocatalytic mitigation of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) under ambient conditions remains challenging due to limited charge-carrier separation and poor selectivity in regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS), which often results in undesirable NO 2 accumulation. In this study, bismuth molybdate (Bi 2 MoO 6 ) was employed as a model photocatalyst, on which dual active sites composed of plasmonic metallic Bi nanoparticles and ultrasmall spin-polarized NiO were in situ constructed. Plasmonic Bi enhances visible-light absorption and hot-electron generation via localized surface plasmon resonance, while NiO establishes a spin-selective electron-transfer pathway that facilitates efficient O 2 activation. This cooperative interface suppresses exciton recombination and promotes a superoxide (·O 2 – )-dominated oxidation pathway. Consequently, the optimized Bi-NiO@BMO achieves 77.0% NO removal, 76.7% nitrate selectivity, and minimal NO 2 accumulation (<11 ppb), representing a 9.7-fold enhancement compared with pristine Bi 2 MoO 6 . In practical applications, the PTFE-assisted loading technique allows the material to be fixed onto ceramic foam, achieving an 84% NO removal efficiency and further enhancing photocatalytic performance. Spectroscopic analyses combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the plasmon–spin interaction lowers the free-energy barriers for ·O 2 – formation and deep NO oxidation. This work provides a mechanistic insight into plasmon-spin-regulated ROS generation and offers a rational design strategy of highly selective photocatalysts for environmental NO x abatement.

Overcoming thermoresistance and achieving precise, efficient tumor therapy remain major challenges. Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression and autophagy activation are two major cellular defense mechanisms associated with thermal resistance. However, strategies that target both mechanisms to improve tumor treatment efficacy remain limited. Herein, this study presents a novel type of near-infrared II (NIR-II)-responsive theranostic nanoplatform (IR-820@γ-PGA/Arg NPs, PIRA NPs) that integrates photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), nitric oxide (NO)-mediated gas therapy (GT), and dual-pathway inhibition mechanisms to overcome thermal resistance. The theranostic nanoplatform utilizes a γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) to encapsulate the NIR-II dye IR-820, which forms stable J-aggregates to improve NIR-II fluorescence emission and photothermal conversion efficiency. The nanoplatform adsorbs L-arginine (Arg) and releases NO under 808 nm laser excitation, exhibiting excellent photothermal properties and NIR-II fluorescence emission for precise tumor treatment. PIRA NPs overcome photothermal resistance via two pathways: suppressing HSP70-mediated thermoresistance and disrupting the autophagy-lysosomal degradation pathway (LC3B/p62 axis) through Arg-derived NO generation. This dual-pathway blockade effectively neutralizes tumor defenses, achieving a 92.7% tumor inhibition rate with minimal systemic toxicity. The γ-PGA framework enhances the stability of J-aggregates and their biocompatibility, further improving therapeutic efficacy. This work provides a versatile nanotherapeutic platform based on a promising strategy for reversing thermoresistance and achieving highly efficient cancer therapy.

Elucidating the impacts of gaseous pollutants on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation mechanisms is critical for developing effective PM2.5 mitigation strategies. However, the combined effects of NOx (NOx = NO2 + NO) and SO2 on SOA compositions under complex photochemical conditions remain mechanistically unresolved. Here, we investigated the individual roles of NO2/NO and their combined effects with SO2 on β-myrcene photooxidation. Our results showed that NO2 enhanced the SOA yield and the O:C ratio through oxidant amplification, whereas NO suppressed nucleation and oxidation states of products but facilitated particle size growth via organic nitrate partitioning. SO2 exhibited significant synergistic effects with both NO2 and NO, facilitating particle formation and growth processes. The newly built vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser photoionization aerosol mass spectrometer enabled the observation of a series of new compounds (i.e., organic peroxides, organic nitrate, and organosulfates) and identified new mechanisms of SOA formation. Notably, a novel compound with a molecular weight of 287 was characterized to be a nitrogen- and sulfur-containing species. These findings highlight the critical roles of pollutants in particle formation in environmental processes and provide key scientific support for regional air quality management and climate change mitigation.

Conventional sensing of nitrogen oxide (NO) is based on charge transfer reactions that occur exclusively at the triple-phase boundaries (solid electrolyte/sensing electrode/NO, TPBs). Here, an interface-engineered strategy is proposed to overcome this limitation by constructing a bidirectional mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) architecture. By modifying a porous YSZ scaffold with NiO to introduce an electron-conducting phase, a mixed conductive heterogeneous porous framework, NiO-YSZ, was formed. Subsequently, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) active sensing phase was incorporated into this framework via an impregnation method, ultimately resulting in a 3D composite sensing electrode (LSCF-NiO-YSZ) that possesses both ionic and electronic conductivity. This design expands the active site region beyond TPBs and enables more efficient charge transfer. The influence of YSZ/NiO mass ratios was systematically examined, and sensors based on NiO-modified YSZ exhibited markedly higher response values and improved sensitivity compared to pristine YSZ. The optimal composition (YSZ/NiO = 5:5) delivered a sensitivity of 10.29 °·decade −1 with excellent reproducibility and selectivity at 500°C and 0.1 Hz. These results highlight interface conduction engineering as an effective route for achieving high-performance impedancemetric NO sensors.
