Development of multidimensional 0D ZnO/1D MXene/2D MXene nanostructure: Sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting ppb-level NO2 at room temperature

Yan Li,Zi-Ning Li,Xiao-Xue Lian,Jing-wen Liu,Ai-lin Li

The development of highly sensitive and selective gas sensors for detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is imperative for environmental monitoring and industrial safety. Herein, we report a novel multi-dimensional heterostructure, 1D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanofibers were derived from 2D MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) through alkaline treatment, then integrated with 0D ZnO nanoparticles for high-performance NO 2 sensing. The unique architecture synergistically combines the high carrier mobility and abundant surface functional terminals of MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) with tunable semiconducting characteristics of ZnO. Benefiting from enhanced charge transfer at the heterointerfaces and maximized active sites, optimized sensor demonstrates exceptional responses to NO 2 at room temperature, realizing a substantial response value of 64.58% towards 50 ppm NO 2 , significantly surpassing pristine MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Notably, the multi-dimensional composite exhibits an ultra-low limit of detection of 25.14 ppb for NO 2 , which meets the requirements for ppb-level detection. Additionally, the response of sensor to NO 2 (64.58%) significantly exceeds that to other interfering gases at equivalent concentrations, such as NH 3 (0.7%) and trimethylamine (7.3%). Furthermore, during long-term stability testing, the response to NO 2 at equivalent concentrations exhibited only a 4.7% decay over approximately 30 days. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the binding energy of this multi-dimensional structure for NO 2 is 0.5 eV, significantly higher than that for other gas species. Theoretical simulations reveal that improved performance originates from strengthened NO 2 adsorption energy and modulated electron depletion layers at hybrid interface. This work provides viable solution for fabricating advanced gas sensors through multi-dimensional material engineering, demonstrating great potential in real-time air quality analysis.

Oxygen vacancy engineering for enhanced sensing performances: A case of SnO2 nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide hybrids for ultrasensitive ppb-level room-temperature NO2 sensing

Ziying Wang,Tong Zhang,Tianyi Han,Teng Fei,Sen Liu,Geyu Lu

In this paper, SnO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) decorated reduced graphene oxide hybrids with abundant vacancies (designated as SnO 2 -RGO-OVs) have been successfully prepared by a combined hydrothermal synthesis and chemical solution deposition method. It is found that high density SnO 2 NPs with the size of 3–5 nm are uniformly distributed on the surface of RGO nanosheets. Most importantly, SnO 2 -RGO-OVs hybrids exhibit excellent room-temperature NO 2 sensing properties with the low detection limit of 50 ppb. When SnO 2 -RGO-OVs-based sensor was exposed to 1 ppm NO 2 , the response is 3.80 and response time and recovery time are 14 s and 190 s, respectively. These sensing performances are superior to those of most reported room-temperature NO 2 sensors based on RGO-based materials and other materials. The excellent sensing performances of SnO 2 -RGO-OVs hybrids can be attributed to their specific structure, e.g., RGO that could facilitate transferring carriers during sensing progress, and abundant OVs that could facilitate adsorption of more NO 2 molecules onto SnO 2 NPs in SnO 2 -RGO-OVs hybrids.

Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Tetrakis(1-pyrenyl)porphyrins into Microscopic Petals and Flowers with Ultrasensitive Room-Temperature NO2 Sensing in a Broad Humidity Range

Qiqi Sun,Qi Liu,Lei Gong,Chiming Wang,Xia Kong,Chaoyi Yang,Weigang Feng,Dongdong Qi,Fangna Dai,Xiyou Li,Yanli Chen

Graphical Moisture-resistant : Remarkably specific sensors for NO 2 have been developed based on hierarchical self-assembly of porphyrin devices. They are effective sensors over a broad humidity range. A metal free meso -tetrakis(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin H 2 T[(Pyr) 4 ]P ( 1 ) and its cobalt congener CoT[(Pyr) 4 ]P ( 2 ) are firstly fabricated into the hierarchical nanopetals and micro-ball-flowers, respectively, by a simple solution-based method. Unexpectedly highly sensitive, stable, selective and reproducible responses to 50–400 ppb NO 2 gas are obtained at room temperature for the aggregates of both 1 and 2 , within 2 min dynamic exposure period at a broad relative humidity (RH) range of 0%-75%. In particular, the micro-ball-flowers of 2 achieve a sensitivity of 91.4 and 214% ppm −1 at 45% RH and 75% RH, respectively, demonstrating the potentials as chemical sensors operating in real-world atmospheres. Furthermore, the sensitivity of 1 and 2 remains almost unchanged under 0%–75% RH after 6 months. The present work represents one of the best results among organic-based ppb-level NO 2 sensors operating under a broad RH range in terms of sensitivity and stability to humidity variations at room temperature.

A simple fluorescence sensor for the detection of nitrite (NO2−) in real samples using water-dispersible graphite-like carbon nitride (w-g-C3N4) nanomaterials

Jing Chen,Qin Ma,Caihe Wang,Xiaoyan Hu,Yunjing Gao,Huan Wang,Dongdong Qin,Xiaoquan Lu

A novel strategy was developed for the fluorescence detection of nitrite (NO2−) in real samples. The method is based on the reaction of water-dispersible graphite-like carbon nitride (w-g-C3N4) with nitrite (NO2−) in an acidic medium to form a new kind of weak fluorescence species. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) for nitrite (NO2−) detection was determined to be 0.16 nM (S/N = 3), and the relative fluorescence intensity versus logarithm concentration of nitrite (NO2−) showed good linearity in the range from 0 to 58.5 μM with R2 = 0.997. This probe displayed several appealing properties including low-cost, simplicity and convenience, high sensitivity, and excellent selectivity.

Synthesis of uniform-sized spherical monodisperse K2Ba[Ni(NO2)6] via polymer-assisted anti-solvent crystallization method for the enhanced catalytic pyrolysis of HNIW

Fengdan Zhu,Chang Liu,Desheng Yang,Chaofei Bai,Xinlong Zeng,Ziteng Niu,Guoping Li,Yunjun Luo

Nitro complexes (NCs) have been selected as combustion catalysts for propellants due to their synergistic behavior. However, NCs prepared by traditional methods suffer from poor dispersion and irregular shape, which limit their catalytic potential. Hence, a polymer-assisted anti-solvent crystallization (PAASC) strategy was developed to fabricate potassium barium hexanitronickelate (K 2 Ba[Ni(NO 2 ) 6 ], PBHNN) crystals. In this method, emulsion particles created by mixing the solvent with the poor solvent serve as spherical templates. The particle size and monodispersity of PBHNN are controlled by PVP content. With 0.042 mol/L PVP, PBHNN were monodisperse with a particle size of 1.05±0.03 μm, which showed the best catalytic behavior for increasing the exothermic amount of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) by 100.6 %. The high catalytic performance is due to the large specific surface area and improved contact efficiency. The in-situ TG-FTIR-MS test revealed that the procedure of PBHNN enhanced the pyrolysis of HNIW. The N-NO 2 bonds of HNIW are weakened by the strong attraction of metal oxides to electrons, which accelerates the formation of NO 2 . Consequently, increased NO 2 promotes subsequent oxidation reactions and improves the pyrolysis efficiency of individual HNIW. Therefore, the PAASC method is crucial for the fabrication of spherical monodisperse NCs with uniform particle size and high catalytic activity.

Room temperature gas sensor based on porous NiO nanoplates modified with rGO nanosheets and SnO2 nanoparticles for accurate and rapid ppb-level NO2 detection

Haineng Bai,Cheng Feng,Yiru Chen,Yunxiao Du,Yamin Feng,Kuili Liu,Yali Yan,Jia Liu,Baohua Zhang,Jin Wang,Dunjun Chen,Youdou Zheng,Fuqiang Guo

The porous NiO nanoplates modified with rGO nanosheets and SnO 2 nanoparticles are developed for accurate and rapid ppb-level NO 2 detection. The developed SnO 2 /NiO/rGO sensor towards 50 ppm NO 2 gas demonstrates an excellent gas-sensing response of 14.8 at 23 °C, which is 3.03 times that of NiO/rGO sensor (4.89) and 6.49 times that of NiO sensor (2.28), respectively. The developed SnO 2 /NiO/rGO sensor exhibits faster response/recovery speed (12.7/32.8 s @5 ppm), with extra-low theoretical detection limit of 0.15 ppb at room temperature. More fascinatingly, our sensors indicate great sensitivity, outstanding repeatability and long-term stability for longer than 7 weeks. Additionally, it also suggests that 1 °C and 1 % relative humidity have the same effect on the SnO 2 /NiO/rGO sensor signal as approximately 13 ppb and 7.0 ppb NO 2 gas change, respectively. Such excellent properties are mainly attributed to the large surface-to-volume ratio, which provides active sites to NO 2 gas spread, adsorption and diffusion on material surface in redox reaction. Moreover, the ternary heterojunctions formed by NiO, rGO and SnO 2 may serve as highly conductive channels to accelerate carrier transfer and abundant oxygen vacancies to reduce the adsorption energy for O 2 and NO 2 gas, thus further improving performance of the sensors.

Co-modification of ZnO and Pt nanoparticles on porous nanorod-assembled SnO2 hierarchical structure for highly sensitive and selective detection of sub-ppm-level NO2

Yajun Zhao,Yanwei Li,Xuping Li,Qianxi Wang,Guang Sun,Jianliang Cao,Yan Wang

Herein, we propose a ZnO and Pt co-modification strategy to boost the NO 2 sensing performance of SnO 2 . Specifically, a ternary Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composite was prepared by sequentially decorating ZnO and Pt nanoparticles onto a porous nanorod-assembled hierarchical structure (PNRHS) of SnO 2 . The resulting Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composites were characterized using various techniques, and their sensing properties to NO 2 were investigated. The results reveal that after co-modification with ZnO and Pt, the SnO 2 sensor exhibits remarkable performance enhancements in detecting sub-ppm-level NO 2 , including significantly improved sensitivity, superior gas discrimination capability, and accelerated response kinetics. At its optimal working temperature of 140 °C, the optimized Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 sensor demonstrates a response of 105.6–1 ppm NO 2 , approximately 42.2, 7.4, and 7.9 times than that of the pure SnO 2 (2.5 at 120 °C), ZnO/SnO 2 (14.3 at 150 °C), and Pt/SnO 2 (13.3 at 140 °C) sensors, respectively. The enhanced NO 2 sensitivity of the ternary Pt/ZnO/SnO 2 composite sensor is attributed to the synergistic sensitization effects of the ZnO and Pt modifiers, whose underlying mechanisms are discussed.

A novel method for rapid in situ preparation of SnS2/Ti3C2Tx composites via microwave-assisted molten salt etching and room-temperature NO2 gas sensing performance

Jinrong Chuan,Shengzhi Duan,Yumei Li,Linping Liu,Jiyun Gao,Chenhui Liu

Microwave-assisted molten salt etching enables rapid, green preparation of Ti 3 C 2 T x from Ti 3 AlC 2 in 15 min. • In situ sulfidation achieves one-step construction of SnS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunctions. • SnS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x shows a 472% NO 2 response at room temperature, with 39.73 ppb LOD and good stability. • DFT calculations reveal band regulation at heterojunctions, enhancing NO 2 adsorption via p-type channels. MXenes have attracted attention in room-temperature gas sensing due to their high conductivity and tunable surface groups. However, conventional preparation often relies on fluoride-containing etching and stepwise processes, which are not only cumbersome but also hazardous. Herein, a microwave-assisted Lewis acidic molten salt etching strategy was developed to efficiently etch Ti 3 AlC 2 within 15 min, accompanied by the simultaneous in situ growth of Sn nanoparticles on Ti 3 C 2 T x . Subsequent in situ sulfidation formed SnS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunctions. The material exhibits outstanding NO 2 -sensing performance at room temperature: a response of 472% toward 100 ppm NO 2 , together with excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 39.73 ppb. The enhancement is ascribed to the SnS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterointerfaces and abundant adsorption sites derived from the enlarged specific surface area. DFT calculations reveal that band modulation induced by work function differences creates p-type conductive channels, clarifying the sensing mechanism. This study offers a green, rapid fabrication approach for high-performance room-temperature gas sensors. Download: Download high-res image (206KB) Download: Download full-size image

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Acetylene Black-Modified Two-Dimensional Metal–Organic Framework [Cd2(BPDC)2(1,4-bis)2]n/AB for Efficient Detection of NO2–

Si-Mian Liu,Mu-Lan Yao,Xiao Wang,Long Tang,Ji-Jiang Wang,Xiang-Yang Hou

Excessive nitrite poses potential threats to human health, making the convenient and accurate detection of nitrite anions (NO2–) critically important for practical applications. Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted attention in the design and application of electrochemical sensors due to their unique structure. In this work, based on the 2D [Cd2(BPDC)2(1,4-bis)2]n (MOF1, 4,4′-biphenyldi-carboxylic acid = H2BPDC, 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene = 1,4-bis) and acetylene black (AB), a novel electrochemical AB/MOF1/glassy carbon electrode (GCE) sensor is constructed and demonstrated for sensitive detection of NO2– in the solution. The research demonstrates that the AB/MOF1/GCE electrochemical sensor exhibits a wide linear response range (2–200 μM) and a low detection limit (5.7093 × 10–8 M), attributable to the synergistic effect of the selectivity contributed by the 2D MOF1 structure and the enhanced sensitivity provided by the AB. It demonstrated excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and reproducibility and can be successfully used for the detection of nitrite in actual samples with a recovery rate of 95.35–104.94%. This paper provides the synthetic application of electrochemical sensors and an effective detection method for carcinogen NO2– in the environment.

p–p Heterojunction Sensors of p-Cu3Mo2O9 Micro/Nanorods Vertically Grown on p-CuO Layers for Room-Temperature Ultrasensitive and Fast Recoverable Detection of NO2

Bala Ismail Adamu,Attia Falak,Yi Tian,Xinghua Tan,Xiangmin Meng,Peipei Chen,Hanfu Wang,Weiguo Chu

High sensitivity, low limit of detection (LOD), and short response and recovery times at room temperature (RT) are critical for gas sensors. For NO2, different binary metal oxide-based sensors were developed to achieve superior performance at elevated temperatures instead of RT. Herein, we report on CuO@CuO and Cu3Mo2O9@CuO sensors with CuO and Cu3Mo2O9 micro/nanorods vertically aligned on the CuO layers, which were directly fabricated using a facile, low-cost, and catalyst-free chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. Their sensing performance tests revealed that the Cu3Mo2O9@CuO p–p heterojunction sensors exhibited a high response of 160% to 5 ppm NO2, an excellent sensitivity of 50% ppm–1, a low LOD of 2.30 ppb, a short response time of 49 s, and a rapid recovery of 241 s at RT, obviously better than those for CuO@CuO sensors. The superior performance of Cu3Mo2O9@CuO sensors could be attributed to the Schottky heterojunction formed between p-Cu3Mo2O9 micro/nanorods and p-CuO films, the catalytic effect, and the anisotropic nature of Cu3Mo2O9 micro/nanorods. This study not only provides a simple, low-cost, and batchable fabrication method of homo/heterojunction sensors with micro/nanorods vertically aligned on films but also opens an avenue for sensor design by tuning the Schottky barrier height to enhance RT performance.

Dual Improvement in Sensitivity and Humidity Tolerance of a NO2 Sensor Based on 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane Self-Assembled Monolayer-Functionalized SnSe2 for Explosive Photolysis Gas Detection

Xuezheng Guo,Yijie Shi,Peilin Liu,Yanqiao Ding,Bingsheng Du,Chengyao Liang,Wen Niu,Yiling Tan,Yuhui He,Jiangzhao Chen,Xiangshui Miao,Xi Yang,Yong He

Explosives can be analyzed for their content by detecting the photolytic gaseous byproducts. However, to prevent electrostatic sparking, explosives are frequently preserved in conditions with low temperatures and high humidity, impeding the performance of gas detection. Thus, it has become a research priority to develop gas sensors that operate at ambient temperature and high humidity levels in the realm of explosive breakdown gas-phase detection. In this work, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) self-assembled monolayer-functionalized tin diselenide (APTES-SnSe2) nanosheets were synthesized via a facile solution stirring strategy, resulting in a room-temperature NO2 sensor with improved sensitivity and humidity tolerance. The APTES-SnSe2 sensor with moderate functionalization time outperforms the pure SnSe2 sensor in terms of the response value (317.51 vs 110.98%) and response deviation (3.11 vs 24.13%) under humidity interference to 500 ppb NO2. According to density functional theory simulations, the stronger adsorption of terminal amino groups of the APTES molecules to NO2 molecules and stable adsorption energy in the presence of H2O are the causes of the improved sensing capabilities. Practically, the APTES-SnSe2 sensor achieves accurate detection of photolysis gases from trace nitro explosives octogen, pentaerythritol tetranitrate, and trinitrotoluene at room temperature and various humidity levels. This study provides a potential strategy for the construction of gas sensors with high responsiveness and antihumidity capabilities to identify explosive content in harsh environments.

Trace NO2 Sensors Based on Reduced Graphene@Metal Oxide /Oxyhydroxide/ Hydroxychloride with Ultrahigh Sensitivity and Good Selectivity at Room Temperature via Modulation of Nanograin Boundary

Xiaohang Ji,Yang Li

Developing gas sensors with high sensitivity and good selectivity at room temperature is essential for the detection and control of trace toxic gases which pose great threats to human health. Herein, a facile and scalable method is proposed to prepare gas sensitive materials of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)@MOX (MOX = SnO2, Mn3O4, FeOOH, Cu2(OH)3Cl) via electrostatic interactions between rGO and metal ions of lower valence and subsequent nucleation and growth at ~80oC. The rGO@MOX sensors composed of uniformly dispersed MOX on rGO sheets, exhibit significantly higher sensitivity to trace NO2 at room temperature than that based on rGO alone. Remarkably, rGO@Cu2(OH)3Cl presents the state-of-the-art response of 220% to trace NO2 (5 parts per billion) and ultra-low limit of detection of 5.0 parts per trillion. Furthermore, the sensor shows good repeatability, long-term stability and high selectivity as revealed by little change of the response by coexistent interference gases of much higher concentrations. Complex impedance spectroscopy analysis reveals that the excellent response to trace NO2 is ascribed to the modulation of nanograin boundary barrier among rGO@MOX. The work provides an effective approach for constructing high performance sensors to detect trace gases at room temperature.
