The Mg-5.0 wt%Ni-2.3 wt%V nanocomposite has been produced through reducing NiCl 2 with the Mg-V nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by hydrogen plasma metal reaction (HPMR) approach. The in situ formed Ni and V particles of about 15 nm uniformly decorate on the surface of Mg NPs. The Ni NPs transform into Mg 2 Ni while the V NPs remain unchanged after first hydrogen absorption and desorption cycle at 673 K. They show synergistic catalytic effects on the hydrogen storage properties of Mg-Ni-V nanocomposite. The nanocomposite can absorb 4.6 wt% H 2 within 30 min at 473 K and desorb 5.2 wt% H 2 within 10 min at 623 K. The activation energies of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation processes are decreased to 52.8 and 85.1 kJ per mol H 2 , lower than those of the Mg-5.4 wt%Ni nanocomposite of 63.2 and 89.3 kJ per mol H 2 . The enhanced hydrogen storage performances of the Mg-Ni-V nanocomposite are mainly attributed to the synergistic catalytic effects of the Mg 2 Ni and V catalysts, and the nanosize effect of Mg NPs on the decrease of the hydrogen diffusion distance.

Developing highly active and stable electrocatalysts from earth-abundant elements are imperative for the large-scalable production of hydrogen. Herein, the three dimensional amorphous NiCoS x O y nanosheets arrays directly grow on Ni foam (NiCoS x O y NSs/NF) through a facile one-step electrodeposition is firstly reported. The special in-situ grown 3D nanosheets arrays, largely exposed active sites and enhanced electrical conductivity enable the resultant NiCoS 0.14 O 3.25 NSs/NF to possess remarkable electrocatalytic performance and stability towards water splitting in 1 M KOH. Specifically, the introduction of S ligand into the hydroxides through a straightforward and convenient electrodeposition method boost the robust composition and comprehensive activity of the NiCoS x O y NSs. Such binder-free, easily prepared NiCoS 0.14 O 3.25 NSs/NF electrode requires the overpotential of 250 mV and 170 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. When functionalizing as two identical cathode and anode in an alkaline electrolyzer, NiCoS 0.14 O 3.25 NSs/NF displays the efficient and robust property on both OER and HER. Remarkably, serving as bifunctional electrode in alkaline electrolyzer, it only needs 1.64 V to reach the current density of 20 mA cm −2 . This study provides a valuable guideline to synthesize non-noble and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts using a time-saving but facile electrochemical method.

This study investigates the application of the Ni 2 La 1 bimetallic basic carbonate catalyst in ozone decomposition, which demonstrates excellent catalytic activity under both low-humidity and high-humidity conditions (90 % relative humidity). The catalyst was synthesized via a co-precipitation method, with the Ni/La molar ratio (Ni:La = 2:1) optimized to enhance its structural and functional properties. This optimization endowed the Ni 2 La 1 catalyst with a more developed layered structure, providing an increased number of surface active sites, which significantly improved its catalytic activity and stability. The results indicate that the Ni 2 La 1 catalyst achieves an ozone decomposition conversion efficiency exceeding 90 % under high-humidity conditions and maintains stable catalytic performance over a continuous operation period of 48 hours. Mechanistic studies further reveal that tribridged hydroxyl groups serve as the primary active sites and play a crucial role in the ozone decomposition reaction. Additionally, the Ni 2 La 1 catalyst exhibits a unique hydroxyl regeneration mechanism, where strong interactions with water molecules facilitate the continuous regeneration of tribridged hydroxyl groups, thereby ensuring stability and sustained catalytic activity in humid environments. This research provides a new pathway for the application of Ni-La bimetallic basic carbonate catalysts in environmental catalysis and green chemical reactions. In particular, it offers robust theoretical support and practical insights for ozone mitigation technologies under high-humidity conditions.

This study reports a strategy for constructing highly efficient single-atom photocatalysts through the formation of Ni–N chemical bonds. By anchoring Ni single atoms on nitrogen-doped ZnIn2S4 (N-ZIS), we created a localized charge region that enables directed interfacial charge transfer. The newly formed Ni–N bond plays dual roles of significantly enhancing charge carrier separation and prolonging their lifetime, and serving as an efficient electron transfer pathway from N trap states to Ni active sites. Combined experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the unique stabilizing effect of single Ni atoms in the N-ZIS matrix and elucidate the charge transfer mechanism through Ni–N bridges. The optimized 5%Ni–N30-ZIS photocatalyst exhibits exceptional hydrogen evolution performance, surpassing most previously reported ZIS-based systems. This work highlights the crucial importance of precise control over interfacial chemical bonding at the molecular level for achieving efficient spatial charge separation in inorganic photocatalysts, providing insights for the design of high-performance photocatalytic materials.

The semi‑hydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes remains a challenging topic in the purification of polymer monomers. Achieving selective hydrogenation of alkynes requires careful control of alkene adsorption strength on the catalyst surface while avoiding the production of over‑hydrogenated compounds. The reaction is fundamentally influenced by the electronic structure of the metal active sites on the catalyst surface. In this study, Al 2 O 3 -supported Al Ni intermetallic nanoparticles catalysts are synthesized through in situ reduction-doping methods using LiAlH 4 as Al sources. The coordination environment and electronic structure of the active metal Ni are finely tuned while the Al Ni stoichiometric ratio is adjusted. The turnover frequency of AlNi 3 /Al 2 O 3 (16.7 h -1` ) and AlNi/Al 2 O 3 (9.1 h −1 ) are higher than that of the Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (8.6 h −1 ). The optimal AlNi/Al 2 O 3 catalyst with AlNi intermetallic structure exhibits the high styrene selectivity (>90 %) when the phenylacetylene conversion exceeds 99 %. The metal bond between Al and Ni atoms strengthens electronic coupling, resulting in the hybridization of Al p orbital and s orbital with Ni d orbital. The resulting isolated and electron-rich Ni sites (Ni δ- ) are key to achieving high selectivity for styrene. These sites govern the π-adsorption of styrene molecules. Furthermore, the kinetic selectivity advantage of this unique Ni ensemble (AlNi, an intermetallic compound) has been verified. A lower reaction rate and higher activation energy (Ea = 132 kJ·mol −1 ) for hydrogenation of styrene over AlNi/Al 2 O 3 catalyst are observed. Moreover, the high stability of this catalyst and its broad applicability in the hydrogenation of various alkyne compounds provide valuable insights for selective hydrogenation applications of Al-based intermetallic catalysts, enabling the exploration of their properties and applications.

ABSTRACT In order to reduce energy consumption in water electrolysis, it is of great importance to design active and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution, especially based on earth-abundant metal. Here we integrate carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Ni-Ni(OH) 2 heterostructure multifunctional components to design a self-supported 3D CNTs-Ni-Ni(OH) 2 catalyst for HER by composite deposition and subsequent in-situ oxidation . In alkaline solution, this designed CNTs-Ni-Ni(OH) 2 catalyst exhibits 0 mV onset overpotential, and overpotentials of 65 mV and 109 mV at 10 and 50 mA/cm 2 respectively. Electrochemical measurements, characterizations, and simulation results attribute the outstanding performance to the incorporation of CNTs and heterostructure . CNTs induce the formation 3D catalytic surface, enhance electrochemical active surface area , and more importantly weaken the adsorption of H. Moreover, the formation of heterostructure, especially reversible Ni(OH) 2 , supplies active sites and adjusts the adsorption strength of H atom to an optimal value. CNTs and heterostructure synergistically facilitate water adsorption, promote water dissociation, and accelerate H 2 desorption. Significantly, integration of multifunctional components supplies a distinct strategy for development of cost-effective electrocatalyst with outstanding performance.

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an efficient and promising approach to upgrade lignin-derived phenolic compounds for the production of high-quality liquid fuels. In this work, a readily obtained Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP catalyst featuring synergistic catalytic sites of Ni-Ni 3 P and Lewis-Brønsted acid was provided for promoting the HDO performance of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. By regulating the ratio of Zr to P (Zr/P), the catalytic activity of Ni/ZrP was significantly modified. With the optimized catalyst of Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75, guaiacol is completely converted into cyclohexane at a low temperature of 240 °C. Further investigation shows that the synergistic effect of Ni and Ni 3 P, deriving from that Ni acts as metal site to activate hydrogen and Ni 3 P serves as Lewis acid site to adsorb guaiacol substrate, promotes the hydrogenation procedure significantly. Moreover, ZrP support as Lewis acid also demonstrates a synergistic interaction with Brønsted acid site that derives from the P-OH group. The coordination of Lewis-Brønsted acid site significantly improves the deoxygenation procedure. The strong interaction between Ni species and ZrP support accelerates the sequential occurrence of hydrogenation and deoxygenation procedures, thus improving the HDO efficiency. The Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75 can be reused at least six runs without significant activity loss. Moreover, this Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75 is efficient on the upgrading of realistic lignin-oil, with the hydrocarbon content increase from 13.4 % to 93.8 %. Therefore, this work provides a valuable reference for the rational design of bifunctional catalysts in the HDO reactions.

Bioethanol and furanics are currently prevailing additives to fossil-based transportation fuels. With the objective to lift the longstanding limitations of these biofuel additives, this work reports for the first time the synthesis of 2-ethoxy-2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-EO-2-MTHF) as a co-upgraded fuel by reacting ethanol with 2-methylfuran (2-MF). The formation of 2-EO-2-MTHF is achieved through ethanol ethoxylation of 2-MF, enabled by a reverse Ni(OH) x /Ni catalyst under hydrogen pressure. Nickel hydroxide species over the Ni nanoparticles play a crucial role in activating ethanol and polarizing the partially hydrogenated dihydrofuran intermediates, favorably steering the reaction selectively toward the ethoxylation product. The reaction conditions, including pressure and temperature, are systematically optimized to enhance the yield of 2-EO-2-MTHF, and provide a means to beneficially tune the fuel compositions consisting mainly of 2-EO-2-MTHF and 2-MTHF, both are high energy density molecules. Importantly, the reverse Ni(OH) x -Ni catalyst allows a one-pot process to accomplish consecutive partial hydrogenation of 2-MF and ethanol ethoxylation. This work provides a practical strategy for upgrading biomass-derived polar primary fuel molecules into more versatile fuels and chemicals.

To address the growing need for high-performance microwave absorbing materials in modern communication and radar technologies, this study proposes a hierarchical heterostructured engineering strategy to integrate multiple loss mechanisms and optimize electromagnetic wave absorption. The hierarchical heterostructured C/TiO 2 /Ni@C composites were constructed via in situ hydrothermal synthesis combined with high-temperature calcination. The microwave absorption properties of the composite can be tuned by adjusting the MXene doping level and pyrolysis temperature. The TiO 2 /C framework derived from MXene and porous Ni@C microspheres derived from Ni-MOF enhance dielectric losses (interfacial polarization and dipole relaxation). The precipitated Ni magnetic nanoparticles improve magnetic losses. Compared with traditional microwave absorbing materials such as single-phase carbon or metal oxides, the C/TiO 2 /Ni@C-2 composite thermally decomposed at 600 °C exhibits excellent microwave absorption properties with an optimal reflection loss of −57 dB at a thickness of 4.26 mm and a frequency of 7.1 GHz. Upon optimization to a thickness of 2.16 mm, its effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) extends to 5.34 GHz (12.43–17.77 GHz), thereby fully encompassing the Ku band. The exceptional microwave absorption performance is attributed to its distinctive magnetic-dielectric layered architecture, heterointerface synergy, and optimized impedance matching, offering critical insights for designing next-generation broadband microwave absorbers.

Nowadays, semiconductor ionic materials have drawn significant attention for developing new electrolytes in low temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). Here we investigate the effect of nickel doping on ionic conductivity of Sm 2 O 3 as an electrolyte material for low temperature SOFCs. The amount of Ni ion doping has an intense effect on the electrochemical properties and power generation . An optimized composition of 10 mol% nickel doped samarium oxide (10NSO) as an electrolyte in the fuel cell has a high open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.09 V and a notable power output of 1080 mW cm −2 at 520 °C. Further investigation revealed that the 10NSO displays a superior ionic conduction up to 0.26 S cm −1 at 520 °C. Moreover, the cell demonstrates high stability up to 80 h. The high electrochemical property and good stability recommend that the NSO is a favorable candidate for symmetrical SOFC electrolyte .

LaNi 1 − x Co x O 3 ( x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.7, 1.0) perovskite catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and investigated in the catalytic oxidation of NO. LaNi 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 showed the best catalytic activity among all the samples, confirming the potential of LaNi 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 as a cheap and efficient NO oxidation catalyst. The high reactivity of LaNi 0.7 Co 0.3 O 3 was mainly due to the moderate amount of adsorbed NO and O 2 and their moderate adsorption strength on the surface of the catalyst, as determined by the XRD, H 2 -TPR, NO-TPD, O 2 -TPD and XPS studies.

Superhydrophobic, water repellent surfaces have attracted much attention but poor surface mechanical properties have limited their wider practical application. Robust surfaces based on nickel–tungsten carbide composite coatings have been electrodeposited. The surfaces showed superhydrophobicity after being modified by stearic acid. The maximum contact angle of water was 164.3 degrees with a sliding angle close to zero. By controlling the deposition conditions, versatile coatings have been produced and the effects of morphology on wettability are discussed. Coating texture has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The surfaces showed excellent abrasion resistance and water-repellence.
