Fabrication of a self-healing hydrophobic ODA@(PDA@(PMO@ODA))/ epoxy resin coating and its long-term protection performance

Yuhua Dong,Yuqin Sun,Jiaqi Yu,Chunmeng Huang,Yutong Xie

Successfully constructed multi-level nano-spheres of ODA@PDA@PMO@ODA with 155° of WCA. • Mechanical grinding temporarily enhances hydrophobicity. • Mechanical grinding damages the long-term barrier performance of the coating. This study aims to simultaneously enhance the hydrophobicity and mechanical durability of coatings through a hierarchical structure design. Periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) particles were first encapsulated with octadecylamine (ODA) via a facile one-pot synthesis. Subsequently, a polydopamine (PDA) layer was deposited on the surface, followed by further grafting of ODA, yielding a hierarchical papillary microstructure superhydrophobic quaternary nanoparticles designated as ODA@PDA@PMO@ODA. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated a PDA encapsulation rate of 15% and an ODA grafting rate of 12%. Epoxy resin coatings incorporated with these nanoparticles exhibited water-repellent properties, demonstrating a static water contact angle (WCA) greater than 100°. The effects of mechanical grinding and thermal self-healing on the protection performance of the coatings were investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Investigation into the performance evolution during the mechanical grinding-self-healing process showed that while grinding temporarily increased surface roughness and hydrophobicity, the introduced macroscopic defects acted as channels for corrosive media penetration, significantly compromising the long-term barrier properties. However, the healing process via heating partially restored performance of the coating, yielding better protection than the unhealed ground coating. Compared with the ground coating, the non-ground intact coating surface exhibits more outstanding and long-lasting protection performance, maintaining a single capacitive arc in Nyquist plots and a high impedance modulus of 10¹⁰ Ω·cm² throughout 60 days of immersion. This exceptional long-term stability is attributed to the synergistic effect of the inherent hydrophobicity of coating and the corrosion inhibition provided by ODA. This work underscores the critical role of surface integrity in the long-term durability of coatings and provides new strategies and a theoretical basis for developing intelligent protective coatings with both high hydrophobicity and high reliability. In Situ Growth of PDA Layer on PEI Film: Enhanced Dielectric Energy Storage Performance and Its High-Temperature Limitation

Weiwei Cui,Yajuan Hou,Xiangwen Peng,Wenshuang Liang,Xin Chen,Xinyu Niu,Wei Deng

To improve the insulation and energy-storage performance of polyetherimide (PEI) films, surface-modified PEI/polydopamine (PDA) films were fabricated via in situ polymerization of dopamine. This study explores the influence of the PDA layer on the wide-temperature dielectric and energy-storage properties of PEI. The self-growth process of the PDA layer promotes the rearrangement of PEI molecular chains and enhances the films' mechanical properties. Its Coulomb blockade characteristics effectively suppress the injection of electrode carriers and improve the breakdown strength. The modified films present enhanced room-temperature performance. The breakdown strength reaches 647.2 kV/mm, which is 64% higher than that of pure PEI films. The discharge energy density ( U d ) reaches 9.51 J/cm 3 , 326% higher than that of pure PEI films. The corona resistance time is extended to 2.3 times that of pure PEI films. At 150°C, the dielectric loss at 1 kHz increases from 0.0095 to 0.019. The film maintains U d of 2.54 J/cm 3 but shows discharge efficiency of only 34.2%. This study clarifies the enhancement of the PDA layer on the room-temperature performance of PEI films and inherent limitations in high-temperature energy storage. It provides an important experimental basis for the design of PEI films modified for wide-temperature energy storage.

Novel Electrochemical Sensor Based on PDA/MXene/MWCNTs/NiCo2O4 Nanocomposites for Rapid, Sensitive, and Selective Detection of Aflatoxin B1

Shen Jinhui,Liu Juan,Yang Siyi,Yao Xin,Fa Huanbao,Hou Changjun,Yang Mei

This work established a novel nucleic acid aptamer sensor for the sensitive and selective detection of AFB1 (Aflatoxin B1), which has important implication for food safety. In a word, we synthesized MXene/MWCNTs/NiCo 2 O 4 composite nanomaterials to improve the sensitivity of the aptamer sensor. The surface of the composite nanomaterials was modified with PDA (poly dopamine) in order to immobilize the NH 2 -cDNA-aptamer complex on the electrode surface by the Schiff base reaction. Characterization of MXene/MWCNTs/NiCo 2 O 4 nanocomposites was carried by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Meanwhile, 4-carboxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl free radical (TEMPO-COOH) was used as an electrochemical signal to detect AFB1. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical DPV signal decreased with increasing AFB1 concentration, ranging from 2.5 to 200 ng/mL, and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) at 1.890 ng/mL (S/N = 3). In addition, the ensemble sensor showed great reproducibility, stability, and selectivity, which has been successfully applied to the determination of AFB1 in maize flour and maize residue samples with recoveries in the 92.2 ~ 109.8% range. Compared to other detection methods for AFB1, this approach afforded comparable detection limits and detection ranges, in reduced analysis time (within 5 min). Thus, a time-saving, sensitive, and selective approach was achieved for the rapid determination of AFB1 in food.

Construction of a biomimetic core-shell PDA@Lac bioreactor from intracellular laccase as a nano-confined biocatalyst for decolorization

Hongqing Bo,Ziyan Zhang,Zhonglin Chen,Wenrui Qiao,Siyi Jing,Tongtong Dou,Tian Tian,Ming Zhang,Weichuan Qiao

Enzymes immobilized on the surface of the carriers are difficult to maintain their conformation and high activity due to the influence of the external harsh environments. A biomimetic core-shell [email protected] bioreactor was constructed by depositing polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of the recombinant Escherichia coli with CotA laccase gene, and releasing intracellular laccase into the PDA shell using ultrasound to break the cell wall of the bacteria. The bioreactor provided a nano-confined environment for the laccase and accelerated the mass and electron transfer in the volume-confined space, with a 2.77-fold increase in Km compared with the free laccase. Since there was no barrier of the cell wall, the crystal violet dye can enter the bioreactor to participate in the enzymatic reaction. As a result, [email protected] achieved excellent decolorization performance even without ABTS as an electron mediator. Moreover, the cytoplasmic solution retained in the PDA shell promoted the enzyme's tolerance to pH, temperature and harsh environments. In addition to PDA encapsulation, carbonyl and –NH 2 groups of PDA were bound covalently with –NH 2 and –COOH on the laccase in the [email protected] , resulting in an extremely high laccase loading of 817.59 mg/g. Also, the relative activity of the bioreactor maintained approximately 75% after 10 cycles of reuse. In addition, the protection of the PDA shell increased the resistance of laccase to UV irradiation. This work provides a novel method of laccase immobilization for application in wastewater treatment.

Strong, self-healing, shape memory PAA-PANI/PVA/PDA/AOP conductive hydrogels with interpenetrating network and hydrogen bond interaction

Liying Wan,Peijie Li,Meiling Yan,Jianhong Wang,Xibao Li

Conductive hydrogels have attracted much attention in soft electronic devices. However, it is still a challenging to be integrated with outstanding mechanical performance, self-healing, shape memory and conductive capability. Herein, we developed a multifunctional conductive hydrogel via interpenetrating network (IPN) and multiple hydrogen bond interaction. Poly (acrylic acid)-polyaniline (PAA-PANI) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) form bones of IPN through chemical and physical double cross-linking. Chemically crosslinking of IPN was obtained by in situ polymerization of acrylic acid and aniline. Physical crosslinking is realized by more multiple hydrogen bonds (N–H···O, O–H···O, O–H···N, N–H···N) interaction among PVA, polydopamine and PF127 diamino oxygen derivatives. PANI forms a conductive path in the IPN to ensure its conductivity. IPN hydrogels with multiple hydrogen bonds has excellent mechanical strength, which is much higher than conventional conductive hydrogels. Moreover, the structure endowed the hydrogel low swelling property, good self-healing and thermal-responsive shape memory effect. The multifunctional IPN conductive hydrogel have potential applications in smart devices including self-healing electronic devices, soft robot, and sensors.

Incorporation of Zr-based metal-organic polyhedron into the PDA/PVDF adsorptive membrane for rapid removal of Cr(VI)

Juan Zhu,Shuang-Bao Li,Bao-Xu Jiang,Yu-Teng Zhang

Zirconium-based metal-organic polyhedra (ZrMOPs) have gained significant attention owing to their well-defined cavities, stability and potential applications. Herein, a novel composite membrane (PDA/ZrT-1-NH 2 /PVDF) was developed by incorporating amino-functionalized ZrMOP (ZrT-1-NH 2 ) into polydopamine (PDA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) cross-linking system. Notably, the cationic ZrT-1-NH 2 cages were immobilized onto the membrane surface by a simple vacuum filtration method, which thus endowed the surface positive charge for the membrane. A pre-prepared composite membrane was used to remove Cr(VI) from the wastewater. The effects of pH, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration, temperature, coexisting ions competition and reusability were investigated in batch experiments. The results revealed the as-prepared composite membrane exhibited high removal efficiency of 96.6 % for Cr(VI) ions within 5 min. In addition, the adsorption rate was very fast, reaching adsorption equilibrium in less than 30 min. Finally, a possible adsorption mechanism was proposed. The adsorption process was dominated by physical adsorption accompanied by a partial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III).

Fenyan Hu,Minting Du,Ruiqi Liang,Wancheng Zhu,Mengke Peng,Hao Xiang,Changhao Wang,Yashao Chen

Magnesium alloy (MgA) with satisfactory biodegradability and excellent mechanical properties has been widely applied in new degradable medical implant materials , especially cardiovascular scaffold materials. However, fast degradation and limited biological activities always restrict the application of MgA. Herein, we have constructed multi-functional inorganic-organic nanocomposites (ZnONRs-PDA/PMPC) onto the surface of micro-arc oxidation pretreated magnesium alloys (MgA-MgO), where ZnO nanorods (ZnONRs) were grown by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method , and polydopamine/poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PDA/PMPC) films were prepared by a co-deposition strategy. The morphology and composition of MgA-MgO-ZnONRs-PDA/PMPC were characterized by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and so on. The MgA-MgO-ZnONRs-PDA/PMPC exhibited good hydrophilic property with a water contact angle of 37.4° and improved the corrosion resistance performance with decreasing the corrosion current density ( i corr ) by 3 orders of magnitude compared with pristine MgA. Moreover, the MgA-MgO-ZnONRs-PDA/PMPC showed good anti-platelet adhesion performance and excellent antibacterial activities with bactericidal rates of 98.1% against S. aureus and 96.2% against E. coli . This work provides an easy and effective method to fabricate a multi-functional nanocomposite with excellent corrosion resistance and biological activities that would facilitate the potential applications of MgA in biomedical fields.

Electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer between Ru-ZnMOF self-enhanced luminophore and a double quencher ZnONF@PDA to detect NSE

Juan Yang,Dongmiao Qin,Na Wang,Yusheng Wu,Kanjun Fang,Biyang Deng

The construction of advanced systems capable of accurately detecting neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is essential for rapidly diagnosing small-cell lung cancer. In this study, an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) resonance energy transfer immunosensor was proposed for the ultra-sensitive detection of NSE. The co-reactants C2O42− and Ru(bpy)32+ were integrated to form a self-enhanced ECL luminophore (Ru-ZnMOF) as the ECL donor. The abundant carboxyl functional groups of Ru-ZnMOF supported antibody 1 via an amidation reaction. Polydopamine-modified zinc dioxide nanoflowers, as ECL acceptors, inhibited Ru-ZnMOF ECL signaling. The linear range of NSE was 10 fg/mL to 100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 3.3 fg/mL (S/N = 3), which is suitably low for determining NSE in real samples.

Electrochemical Sensor Based on Poly-L-Tyrosine/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs Nanocomposites for the Detection of 17β-Estradiol in Wastewater

Miao Guo,Xia Cui,Lu Wang,Ke Yang,Jiameng Xu,Liangwei Yu,Zhimin Luo,Aiguo Zeng,Jia Zhang,Qiang Fu

Achieving direct electrochemical detection of 17β-estradiol (E2) at low concentrations remains a challenge due to the weak electrochemical activity of E2. In this study, we report a simple, cheap and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on nanocomposite for the direct detection of E2 in wastewater. The nanocomposite sensing electrode was developed by electrochemical in situ polymerization. Due to the π–π stacking and hydrogen bonding between poly-L-tyrosine (P(L-tyr)) with E2, we prepared P(L-tyr) electrode based on dopamine-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PDA-CNTs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). Then P(L-tyr)/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs/GCE sensing system was obtained. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of fast electron transfer of AuNCs and the signal amplification effect of PDA-CNTs enables sensitive and direct detection of E2. The results showed that P(L-tyr)/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs/GCE sensor had a linear response to E2 concentration from 0.05 to 10 μmol·l−1 with a detection limit of 7.1 nmol·l−1. Then, the trace amount of E2 in pharmaceutical wastewater samples can be directly detected against several interferences from complex matrix, with recoveries from 91.0 to 107.5%. P(L-tyr)/AuNCs/PDA-CNTs/GCE showed good stability when placed at room temperature. Therefore, it can meet the requirements of the sensitive detection of E2 in complex matrix.

Dynamic control of pentachlorophenol photodegradation process using P25/PDA/BiOBr through regulation of photo-induced active substances and chemiluminescence

Fengjie Chen,Wanchao Yu,Yarui Wang,Silong Wang,Ying Liang,Ling Wang,Yong Liang,Lixia Zhao,Yawei Wang

Photodegradation is a new approach for the removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Photooxidation degradation (using hydroxyl radicals) exhibits better performance to remove PCP than photoreduction degradation, but the former will lead to an increase in the production of toxic by-products such as tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCBQ). Thus, a new strategy is required to enhance PCP photodegradation and simultaneously inhibit toxic intermediates production. Herein, TiO 2 (P25)/polydopamine (PDA)/BiOBr was synthesized and used to photodegrade PCP. Based on the relative position of the CB and VB of P25 and BiOBr, and PDA as an electron transfer mediator, a high number of holes, electrons, and superoxide anions were produced instead of hydroxyl radicals . The photocatalytic activity of P25/PDA/BiOBr exhibited the best performance among as-prepared samples, reaching a k (pcp) value of 0.4 min −1 (20 μM PCP) under UV light irradiation within 10 min. According to chemiluminescence and acute toxicity assays, relative to P25, the toxic intermediates of TCBQ and trichlorohydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (OH-TrCBQ) generation was greatly reduced over P25/PDA/BiOBr, with a lack of toxic product generation during PCP photodegradation process. These findings provide an alternative strategy to achieve greener and more efficient organic pollutant photodegradation.

Preparation of BTA@PDA/PANI microcapsules and anti-corrosion performance of self-healing epoxy coatings on low carbon steel

Yingying Feng,Haiyan Li,Mingjun Zhang,Jiaying Jin,Beiyao Zhang,Yong Wang,Zhike Li

Benzotriazole-loaded polydopamine/polyaniline (BTA@PDA/PANI) microcapsules are prepared vis the combination of a hard template method and in-situ polymerization. The PDA/PANI hollow microspheres are first prepared using SiO 2 as a hard template and etching them with hydrofluoric acid . The BTA corrosion inhibitor is then loaded into the PDA/PANI hollow microspheres to obtain the BTA@PDA/PANI microcapsules. The mean particle size and shell thickness of the synthesized microcapsules are 8.3 and 2.1 µm, respectively. The load capacity of BTA is above 20 wt%. The corrosion resistance of epoxy coatings with different contents and types of microcapsules is compared by saline immersion and electrochemical impedance tests. A scratched coating with 1 wt% BTA@PDA/PANI microcapsules has the best anti-corrosion effect. The synergistic anticorrosion mechanism of BTA, PDA and PANI is revealed and confirmed.

Supercritical Fluid-Assisted Fabrication of PDA-Coated Poly (l-lactic Acid)/Curcumin Microparticles for Chemo-Photothermal Therapy of Osteosarcoma

Zheng Zhao,Shilu Chen,Yao Xiao,Maobin Xie,Wen Yu

After traditional osteosarcoma resection, recurrence of tumor is still a major clinical challenge. The combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy (PTT) has great potential in improving therapeutic effect. However, the studies using polydopamine (PDA) as photothermal transducing agent to improve the anti-cancer activity of curcumin (CM)-loaded poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) microparticles (PLLA/CM) have seldom been investigated. In this study, we reported the synthesis of PDA-coated PLLA/CM microparticles (PDA-PLLA/CM) prepared by PDA coating on the surface of the PLLA/CM microparticles fabricated by solution-enhanced dispersion by supercritical CO2(SEDS) for chemo-photothermal therapy of osteosarcoma. The average particle sizes of PLLA/CM and PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles with a spherical shape were (802.6 ± 8.0) nm and (942.5 ± 39.5) nm, respectively. PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles exhibited pH- and near-infrared (NIR)-responsive release behavior to promote CM release in the drug delivery system. Moreover, PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles displayed good photothermal conversion ability and photothermal stability attributed to PDA coating. Additionally, the results of in vitro anti-cancer experiment showed that 500 μg/mL PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles had good anti-cancer effect on MG-63 cells and no obvious toxicity to MC3T3-E1 cells. After incubation with PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles for 2 days, NIR irradiation treatment improved the anti-cancer activity of PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles obviously and reduced the cell viability of osteosarcoma from 47.4% to 20.6%. These results indicated that PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles possessed a synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy for osteosarcoma. Therefore, this study demonstrated that PDA-PLLA/CM microparticles may be an excellent drug delivery platform for chemo-photothermal therapy of tumors. Keywords:osteosarcoma therapy;microparticles;curcumin;synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy
