Dielectrophoresis (DEP) as a label-free cell separation approach in microdevices has been extensively investigated for a variety of applications. 3D microelectrodes made of conducting-PDMS inherit the merit of volumetric electrodes for generating influential DEP force throughout the entire channel depth and meanwhile, exploit low-cost fabrication process by soft lithography. However, the configuration of conducting-PDMS electrodes is limited to being embedded in sidewall of flow chamber, which leads to rather low flow rate and difficulties in extension of the flow rate. We previously reported a more effective configuration with 3D interdigitated electrodes made of silicon that assist cell sliding along solid tracks, yet such device requires expensive silicon dry etching and, moreover, the track appears to be patterned with non-straight and wavy outline, which not only hinders the flow rate but also allows cell sliding to occur only along its downstream side. Here we demonstrate low-cost silver-PDMS electrode-track featuring ideally straight outline that induces rather uniform drag to drive smooth cell sliding. Such design achieves live and dead cell separation at flow rate twice as that of silicon tracks with cell loading concentration 10 times higher. It also fully utilizes the track to enable cell sliding on both of the up- and down-stream sides. Notably, we also demonstrate that this track is expandable to be V-shape for more advanced bidirectional cell sliding, which is showcased here by tumor cells separation from lymphocytes at 1.2 mL/h. Such results greatly enhance the throughput as compared to the state-of-art conducting-PDMS based cell separator.

Practical significance in terms of the long-term effective application of photocatalytic coatings is greatly challenged by its easy pollution and poor self-cleaning performance. In this paper, a self-cleaning photocatalytic WO 3 -TiO 2 nanorod (MWT) /PDMS building coating (MWT coating) was prepared by spraying methods. The surface hierarchical structure fabricated by MWT and PDMS was a crux to construct a superhydrophobic surface, which endowed MWT coating with self-cleaning performance. Besides, the MWT coating exhibited prominent durability and antifouling property after 450 d practical application of the external wall. The excellent self-cleaning property of the coating was confirmed by the removal and resistance to the adhesion of powder particles. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic properties of MWT endowed MWT coating with the ability to degrade organic pollutants on the surface. The color difference of the coating polluted by methyl red was only 1.18 and 4.77 after 24 h UV and visible irradiation, respectively. This mutual benefit effect of self-cleaning and photocatalysis was also reflected in the degradation of NO. In the first five cycles, the degradation efficiency of NO decreased by 4.74% gradually under visible light due to the adhesion of oxidation products, and most of the MWT on the coating surface was regenerated after flushing, the PCD efficiency increased by 3.71%. Furthermore, after 30 days of outdoor weathering test, the PCD efficiency of MWT coating decreased by 11.74% and 12.05% under UV and visible light, respectively, which lays a foundation for the long-term effectiveness of the MWT coating in the process of use.

A novel multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mixed matrix pervaporation membrane with a dipping amount of 2% was successfully fabricated and characterized. The presence of MWCNTs provided two more transport channels in PV process, greatly improving the separation performance of the membrane for aromatic compounds. The maximum permeation fluxes in MWCNTs/PDMS of methyl salicylate (MetSa), linalool and β-Ionone were1.25, 1.28 and 0.075 g·m −2 ·h −1 , respectively, at 30 °C in an aromatic-aqueous model system, which were 19.04%, 23.07% and 50% higher than those in a pure PDMS membrane. The pervaporation of MetSa and linalool was improved by the presence of β-Ionone; however, that of MetSa was competitively weakened by linalool. Furthermore, the performance of MWCNTs/PDMS for recovery of VOCs from real brewed tea was investigated. The recovery rates of linalool, MetSa and β-Ionone were 85.80%, 90.84% and 83.40%, after treatment at 30 °C for 6 h, and the concentrations on the permeation side were as high as 3.53 mg·L −1 , 4.47 mg·L −1 and 72.41 mg·L −1 , which showed good application prospects of MWCNTs/PDMS membrane in aroma recovery by pervaporation technology.

Superhydrophobic coatings hold considerable promise for safeguarding metals against corrosion. However, realizing coatings with excellent superhydrophobicity, mechanical strength and corrosion resistance remains a great challenge. In this study, a robust superhydrophobic surface was achieved through the laser processing of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, resulting in a water contact angle (WCA) of approximately 165°. Notably, the coating demonstrated outstanding abrasion resistance in sandpaper abrasion, steel wool abrasion, and falling sand tests. The friction coefficient of the coating is only 0.25. In addition, the robust superhydrophobic coating also has good anti-corrosion. The lowest-frequency impedance value of the composite coatings increases seven orders of magnitude compared with that of carbon steel, and the corrosion inhibition efficiency ( η ) is 99.83 %. The outstanding corrosion resistance is primarily ascribed to the formation of a dual synergistic barrier by PDMS-MWCNTs, providing effective protection for carbon steel.

The ultrashort and controllable membrane-forming process is highly required in large-scale production of PDMS membrane. To shorten the cross-linking time, an UV-induced ring-opening polymerization of the epoxide groups was introduced to the preparation of PDMS membranes. PDMS was firstly functionalized with epoxide groups, providing the possibility of being cross-linked under UV irradiation. With this strategy, the membrane curing was finished within 200 s, hence shortened by two orders of magnitude in comparison with the conventional thermal-driven method. Meanwhile, the cationic photoinitiation of epoxide groups can be achieved without oxygen inhibition in an open-air environment. Moreover, the viscosity of the coating solution in the groove is kept constant when protected from light, thus meeting the requirement of the coatability. When applied to the pervaporation of a 1.5 wt% 1-butanol/water solution at 55 °C, the measured 1-butanol separation factor was 45 and the total flux was 1119 g m −2 h −1 . This novel strategy shows a great prospect in the continuous preparation of membrane.

The acquisition of a robust plasmonic substrate with both appreciable molecule anchoring and quantitative detection features is a prerequisite for the reliable adhibition of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. Herein, an innovative sophisticated SERS substrate was proposed by spin-coating titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) onto a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film followed by the modification of triangular silver (Ag) nanoplates through in-situ reduction. The absence of organic surfactants during this process rendered the substrate great opportunity in effectively enriching molecules and the assembly of TiO 2 and Ag made it a reusable and sensitive SERS platform. After a recyclable monitoring of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) with different concentrations was carried out by reusing the hybrid substrate for 8 cycles, a limit of detection as low as 1.58 × 10 −9 M was achieved. The distinctive intrinsic Raman signal from PDMS matrix was further verified to successfully correct the poor detection linearity by serving as internal standard and the coefficient of linear correlation (R 2 ) was improved from 0.967 to 0.997. In this regard, the as-prepared multifunctional PDMS/TiO 2 /Ag hybrid substrate with simulation-estimated electromagnetic “hot spots” exhibited remarkable quantitative recyclable detection performance.

Coatings with anti-icing performance possess hydrophobicity and low ice adhesion strength, which delay ice formation and make ice removal easier. In this paper, the anti-icing performance of nano/microsilica particle-filled amino-terminated PDMS (A-PDMS)-modified epoxy coatings was investigated. In the process, the influence of the addition of A-PDMS on the hydrophobicity and ice adhesion strength was investigated. Furthermore, the influences of various weight ratios of nanosilica/microsilica (Rn/m) on the hydrophobicity and ice adhesion strength of the coating were investigated. Hydrophobicity was evaluated by contact angle (CA) and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) tests. Ice adhesion strength was measured by a centrifugal adhesion test. The addition of A-PDMS markedly increased hydrophobicity and decreased ice adhesion. The size combination of particles obviously affects hydrophobicity but has little effect on ice adhesion. Finally, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to reveal the anti-icing mechanism of the coatings.Keywords:wettability;superhydrophobicity;anti-icing;icephobicity;epoxy;silica

Uniform zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were synthesized then dispersed into a rubbery polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to prepare ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membranes. The performance of the ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membrane was evaluated in ethanol-water and aromatic-water model systems. The ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membranes, loaded with 6 wt% of the nanoparticles, separated of ethanol and the characteristic compounds in blackberry juice, linalool, benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate more effectively than a pure PDMS membrane. Based on these results, a ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membrane was used to separate the volatile aromatic compounds (VACs) from natural blackberry juice. The total volatile aromatic compounds in the blackberry juice decreased significantly after pervaporation treatment. The recovery of linalool, benzaldehyde and ethyl acetate at 50 °C were 93.8%, 92.1% and 75.2%, confirming the high performance of ZIF-8/PDMS hybrid membrane.

Currently, there is strong interest in carbon capture and absorption as a means of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and combating climate change. Unfortunately, the current and traditional methods to achieve such goals are not economical, because they require a huge absorption–desorption plant with high investment and operating costs and high recycle rates of chemical absorbers. In this paper, we propose a novel CO2 capture method combining dimethyl carbonate as a physical solvent and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/TiO2 nanocomposite as a desorption membrane. The effects of TiO2 concentration, feed temperature, and permeate pressure on the pervaporation process for CO2 capture were studied. Results showed that the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles (up to 5 wt %) resulted in 3.61 kg/m2·h flux and 44.68 selectivity of the membrane. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles in the PDMS membrane not only increased the performance of membrane’s but also reduced (about 72%) energy consumption. To corroborate our experimental findings, a simple simulation was conducted by Gaussian 09. The modeling results demonstrated that the incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles to the PDMS led to favorable absorption of CO2 compared with the composite one. These results indicate a novel and promising method to capture CO2 effectively and economically for industrial purposes.

In this work, micro-nanostructure polydimethylsiloxane/silicon dioxide (PDMS/SiO 2 ) composite coatings were fabricated on the surface of magnesium alloys with two different sizes of SiO 2 nanoparticles by a simple painting method. The effects of the proportion of 40 nm and 50–250 nm SiO 2 on the wettability, wear and corrosion performance of the composite coatings were investigated. The morphology, composition, water contact angles (WCAs), wear and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), the contact angle meter, sandpaper-weight device and electrochemical workstation, respectively. And the mechanical and thermal stability were also respectively obtained by finger-wipe, knife-scratch tests and thermogravimetry. It is found that the PDMS/SiO 2 composite coatings fabricated under optimized parameters are stable and superhydrophobic (SH) ones and their WCAs can maintain at a high level (138°–150° and 133°–153°) under 50 abrasion cycles with sandpaper. The composite coatings exhibit good resistance to knife damaging and finger touching. The electrochemical experiments show that the robust coatings can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. It is rationally expected that the results can provide an informative reference to the fabrication of wear-resistant super-hydrophobic composites on magnesium alloys.

The disadvantages such as swelling after absorbing water and flammability restrict the widespread applications of lignocellulose composites (LC). Herein, a facile and effective method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces with flame retardancy on LC has been investigated by coating polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and stearic acid (STA) modified kaolin (KL) particles. The as-prepared coatings on the LC exhibited a good repellency to water (a contact angle = 156°). Owing to the excellent flame retardancy of kaolin particles, the LC coated with PDMS@STA-KL displayed a good flame retardancy during limiting oxygen index and cone calorimeter tests. After the coating treatment, the limiting oxygen index value of the LC increased to 41.0. Cone calorimetry results indicated that the ignition time of the LC coated with PDMS@STA-KL increased by 40 s compared with that of uncoated LC. Moreover, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and the total heat release (THR) of LC coated with PDMS@STA-KL reduced by 18.7% and 19.2% compared with those of uncoated LC, respectively. This LC coating with improved water repellency and flame retardancy can be considered as a potential alternative to protect the lignocellulose composite. Keywords:lignocellulose composites;kaolin;PDMS;superhydrophobic;flame retardancy

In the present study, high thermally conductive and electrically insulated polymer composites containing modified dense graphene foam (MGF) and modified hexagonal boron nitride (M-h-BN) via polydopamine (PDA) coating and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) grafting were manufactured and studied. Due to the double percolated networks built by MGF and M-h-BN, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix composite has high thermal conductivity of 23.45Wm −1 K −1 and 2.11Wm −1 K −1 in in-plane and out-of-plane directions, respectively. In addition, an insulated layer of M-h-BN/PDMS can be introduced onto both sides of composite sample with the help of infiltration technique, which results in a high breakdown strength of 4.5 kV/mm. Owing to the excellent comprehensive properties, the M-h-BN/MGF/PDMS composite has a promising application in heat management field of the microelectronic industry.
