Nanobrick wall hybrid coating with super oxygen barrier properties were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film using a quadlayer (QL) assembly of polyelectrolytes and nanoplateles. A quadlayer assembly consists of three repeat units of polyacrylic acid (PAA), poly (dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and layered α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). PDDA with positive charges can assemble alternatively with both α-ZrP and PAA with negative charges to form nanobrick wall architectures on the surface of PET film via the electrostatic interaction. The lamellar structure of α-ZrP platelets and the dense QL assembly coating can greatly reduce the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of PET film. Compared to pristine PET film, the OTR of PET (QL)19is reduced from 57 to 0.87 cc/m2/day. Moreover, even with 19 QLs coating, PET (QL)19composite film is still with an optical transparency higher than 90% and a haze lower than 10%. Therefore, the transparent PET (QL)ncomposite films with super oxygen barrier properties show great potential application in food packaging and flexible electronic packaging. Keywords:nanobrick;electrostatic interaction;oxygen barrier;packaging applications

To address the compatibility challenges between polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), a long-chain-branched polypropylene compatibilizer featuring ester groups (LCB-PP-E) was synthesized from PP and pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA), facilitated by the initiator dicumyl peroxide. The structure of LCB-PP-E was characterized by using infrared spectroscopy, rheology, and melt flow index analysis, while potential reaction mechanisms were discussed. The morphology of the blend was examined by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The effects of LCB-PP-E on the thermodynamic and crystallization behavior of PP/PET blends were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarizing microscopy. LCB-PP-E sampled at the reaction peak point exhibited a longer branched PP chain compared to that of LCB-PP-E obtained at the balance torque, facilitating better entanglement with PP macromolecules. Furthermore, the ester groups on LCB-PP-E engaged in transesterification reactions with the ester groups on the PET chains. The combined effects of these interactions effectively reduced the interfacial tension between the two phases, resulting in a decreased size of the dispersed PET phase and a more uniform distribution. Additionally, the introduction of LCB-PP-E significantly narrowed the crystallization and glass transition temperature difference between the phases. The enhanced compatibility led to an increase in elongation at break, demonstrating a transition of the blend from a brittle material to a ductile material. This compatibilization system shows substantial potential for high-quality applications in PP/PET recycled plastics.

Steric stabilization and lubrication give loop polymer brushes enhanced antifouling properties. In the study, linear zwitterionic poly(NMASMCMS) brushes were first constructed on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) surface through surface-initiated reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization. The tethered linear brushes on sheets were then thiolated with ethanolamine, followed by oxidation to form loop brushes. The chain-end closure strategy to form loop brushes is facile, with a high transformation rate. The physical and chemical structures were characterized by the water contact angle (WCA), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Loop brush grafted sheets (PET-L) exhibited better lubricity than linear brush grafted sheets (PET-B) due to the rigidity of loop brush structures. The two brushes exhibited good antifouling and hemocompatible properties on low protein adsorption, bacteria adhesion, platelet adhesion, and hemolysis. In comparison, loop brushes performed with antifouling properties superior to those of linear brushes.

To fabricate recyclable catalytic materials with high catalytic activity, Se4+@TiO2photocatalytic materials were synthesized by the sol–gel method. By introducing free radicals on the surface of polyester (PET) fabrics through plasma technology, Se4+@TiO2/PET composite photocatalytic materials with high photocatalytic activity were prepared. The surface morphology, crystal structure, chemical composition, and photocatalytic performance were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–Vis), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), respectively. The photocatalytic degradation performance was determined by assessing the degradation of azo dye methyl orange under simulated solar irradiation. The results demonstrated that Se4+@TiO2/PET exhibited a superior degradation rate of methyl orange, reaching up to 81% under simulated sunlight. The PL spectra indicated that the electron–hole pair separation rate of Se4+@TiO2/PET was higher than that of TiO2/PET. Furthermore, UV–Vis spectroscopy demonstrated that the relative forbidden band gap of Se4+@TiO2/PET was determined to be 2.9 eV. The band gap of Se4+@TiO2/PET was narrower, and the absorption threshold shifted toward the visible region, indicating a possible increase in its catalytic activity in simulated solar irradiation. In addition, the antibacterial properties of Se4+@TiO2/PET were subsequently investigated, achieving 99.99% and 98.47% inhibition againstS. aureusandE. coli, respectively.

With numerous PET plastics being discarded, mankind is faced with serious environmental challenges. Innovative upcycling strategy to convert waste PET into functional materials is receiving attention. Meanwhile, water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly way for hydrogen production, but is limited by expensive catalysts. RuO 2 , as a potential alternative catalyst, is insufficient in stability and activity. Accordingly, we propose a novel OER catalyst (Ru x Mn 1.2 Co 0.8 O y ) converted from waste PET plastics via a bimetallic-MOF pathway, which partially retains the stacked nanorods structure and forms Mn,Co-doped RuO 2 with decreased particle size. The Ru x Mn 1.2 Co 0.8 O y delivers an overpotential of 214 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and operates stably over 500 h; moreover, the method is generalizable to diverse PET plastics. Theoretical calculations reveal the Ru sites adjacent to Mn- and Co-doped sites have low overpotential and favorable activity. This work provides a strategy for the high-value recycling of plastics resources and the development of OER electrocatalyst.

The widespread use of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has led to severe environmental pollution and significant resource depletion. The depolymerization of waste PET into bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) offers considerable potential for chemical recycling. Although conventional glycolysis faces challenges such as low degradation efficiency and high energy requirements, an efficient catalytic method was developed herein to convert postconsumer PET into BHET under milder conditions. The incorporation of the cosolvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) into the reaction system reduced the degradation temperature to 150 °C, significantly lower than the temperature observed without cosolvents, which exceeded 190 °C. Under optimized conditions, the combination of a metal catalyst and the organic nitrogen heterocycle 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) enabled complete depolymerization of PET within 90 min, yielding BHET at 80.11%. In addition, the recrystallized product was repolymerized into PET, enabling closed-loop resource recycling. Life cycle assessment (LCA) indicates that this closed-loop approach is not only technically feasible but also environmentally beneficial, reducing energy consumption by approximately 64.54% and greenhouse gas emissions by 37.32%. This strategy offers a practical low-carbon solution for the sustainable recycling of waste PET.

Multifunctional fabrics for thermal management are becoming increasingly essential in a wide range of application scenarios. However, existing thermal management fabrics exhibit insufficient performance and shortcomings in environmental tolerance. The main challenge lies in the interactions between multiple protective additives, which often lead to detrimental effects on functionality and mechanical properties. This study innovatively develops a multifunctional protective PET fabric (PET/APTES-PSA@Cu-2) by utilizing γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and phosphorous acid (PSA) to incorporate copper particles into the fabric. This design not only achieves thermal management but also integrates sensing, fire safety, and multiple protective functions. The PET/APTES-PSA@Cu-2 fabric demonstrates excellent electrothermal performance at −60 °C, reaching a peak temperature of 22 °C at 0.4 V. At 422 °C, the fabric achieves a high-temperature insulation efficiency of 248 %. The fabric combines mechanical reinforcement and protective functions, including enhanced tensile strength, abrasion resistance, antibacterial properties, and room-temperature self-healing capabilities. It also exhibits excellent flame-retardant performance, with a 46.56 % reduction in peak heat release rate and a 70.17 % decrease in average effective heat of combustion. Notably, it significantly reduces the smoke toxicity of phosphorus-based flame-retardant PET fabrics (CO production is reduced by 132.43 %, aldehydes are nearly eliminated, and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are significantly decreased). Additionally, PET/APTES-PSA@Cu-2 exhibits excellent sensing capabilities, effectively enabling joint health monitoring and thermotherapy. This study provides an effective approach for developing multifunctional protective fabrics with broad application prospects in fields such as firefighting, military equipment, aerospace, and high-performance sportswear.

In order to avoid potential environmental and safety problems caused by conventional flame retardants , we synthesized the flame-retardant-element-free copolyesters via chemically incorporating the structural units of bisphenol A and bisphenol F into the PET main chain via melt polymerization, respectively. The chemical structures of resulting copolyesters were confirmed by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Interestingly, though there exists only a small structural difference between bisphenol A and bisphenol F, those two kinds of copolyesters show different thermal stabilities, pyrolysis behaviours and flame retardant performances. Pyrolysis-GC/MS tests were performed to investigate the pyrolysis mechanism of the copolyesters, and the results showed that the “Ar–CH 2 –Ar” structure units (bisphenol F) would lead to rearrangement reactions at high temperature, ultimately forming the phenanthrene ring structures; whereas “Ar–C(CH 3 ) 2 −Ar” structure units (bisphenol A) could not. The corresponding specific pyrolysis processes are proposed. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicated that these rearrangement reactions would most likely occur in the solid state of the copolyesters and made them have high residues. Cone calorimeter measurements, LOI and vertical UL-94 tests were used to characterize the flame-retardant properties of the copolyesters, and the results proved that the copolyesters containing bisphenol F had better flame retardancy, more char formation and less melt drippings than those containing bisphenol A due to the rearrangement reactions.

Coupling the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with PET-derived ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) offers an energy-saving route for hydrogen production and plastic upcycling. However, Pt-based bifunctional catalysts are limited by inefficient Pt utilization, nonideal H* adsorption, and anodic oxidation-induced deactivation. Here, we report an oxygen-deficient D-Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF catalyst prepared by dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment and integrated with an alternating-pulse electrolysis strategy. Plasma treatment introduces abundant oxygen vacancies and promotes electron transfer from Ni to Pt, downshifting the Pt d-band center and optimizing H* adsorption. The optimized catalyst requires only 12 mV to reach 10 mA cm–2 for HER and delivers a Pt mass activity of 3.23 A mg–1Pt at –0.1 V vs RHE, which is 64.6 and 1.68 times higher than those of Pt/C and untreated Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF, respectively. In an HER||EGOR electrolyzer, D-Pt-Ni(OH)2/NF achieves 100 mA cm–2 at 0.96 V using PET hydrolysate. Alternating-pulse electrolysis suppresses Pt oxidation and enables stable 100 h operation in a membrane-free flow electrolyzer, with >90% Faradaic efficiency for glycolic acid and nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency for H2. Techno-economic analysis indicates a net profit of $1080.1 per ton of PET processed. This work demonstrates a catalyst–electrolysis co-engineering strategy that links plasma-induced electronic modulation with durable plastic valorization-assisted hydrogen production.

Neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy arises from unconjugated bilirubin deposition in the brain. Conventional tests are limited: serum bilirubin does not reflect intracerebral load, and MRI T1 changes are late and confounded by myelination. We evaluated whether 18 F-FDG PET detects early metabolic abnormalities and monitor progression. Twelve Sprague–Dawley rat were randomly assigned to bilirubin-exposed or control groups. The bilirubin-exposed group received intraperitoneal bilirubin from postnatal day 3. 18 F-FDG PET/CT was performed on days 7 and 21, and regional standardized uptake values and cerebellum-normalized SUV ratios were quantified. Serum bilirubin, histology, immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR were assessed in parallel. The model showed elevated serum bilirubin ( p < 0.001) and neuronal injury. On day 7, PET revealed regional hypermetabolism in hippocampus and thalamus ( p < 0.01), coinciding with increased IL-6 (cortex, thalamus) and TNF-α (thalamus). By day 21, widespread hypometabolism involved cortex, basal ganglia, hippocampus, thalamus, and brainstem ( p < 0.001), with only residual thalamic IL-6. GFAP indicated persistent astrocytic activation, whereas MAP2 and NeuN were largely preserved. The SUV ratio analysis showed a pattern consistent with the SUV-based findings. 18 F-FDG PET detected age-dependent metabolic alterations in bilirubin encephalopathy and may be useful for early detection and longitudinal monitoring.

Thermal insulation materials play a critical role in enabling energy conservation and sustainable development. While emerging micro-nanofiber-based porous insulation materials have attracted significant attention due to their remarkably lower thermal conductivity compared to traditional counterparts, their widespread application has been hindered by complex manufacturing processes and high costs. This study pioneers a novel pathway to address these challenges through the high-value transformation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into cost-effective, high-performance materials. To overcome the difficulty of controllably constructing micropores within aerogels, we developed an innovative approach combining electrospinning with vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS), optimized via response surface methodology (RSM) to precisely engineer nano-pores on fiber surfaces. This strategy successfully produced recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET)/chitosan (CS) composite aerogels featuring a hierarchical “macro–meso–micro” porous architecture. Furthermore, by uniquely regulating tert-butanol concentration to control ice crystal dimensions, we constructed aerogels with a distinctive “dense-sparse-dense” gradient structure. The resulting material demonstrates exceptional comprehensive performance, with outstanding thermal insulation properties exhibiting an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.040 W/(m K). This work, therefore, holds dual significance: it offers a viable solution for sustainable waste management and establishes a robust theoretical and technical foundation for the development of high-performance aerogels with customizable hierarchical and gradient structures. Fluoride-containing wastewater has posed severe threats to the ecological environment and human health. Current mainstream treatment technologies still suffer from difficulties in the deep purification of low-concentration fluoride, poor adaptability to complex actual wastewater, and high treatment costs. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly and cost-effective functional materials is a critical approach to achieve efficient treatment of such wastewater. This study addresses this need by synthesizing a lanthanum-based metal-organic framework (La-MOF) adsorbent through hydrothermal method by using terephthalic acid derived from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics as organic ligand. The synthesized La-MOF exhibited stable fluoride ions removal performance across a wide pH range, achieving 90% removal efficiency and maximum adsorption capacity of 52.0 mg/g at optimal pH 4. The adsorption process of fluoride ions by La-MOF was accurately represented by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetics obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that elevated temperatures were conducive to the adsorption of fluoride ions. Competitive ion experiments show that PO 4 3− , HCO 3 − , ciprofloxacin, and tetracycline have a certain impact on the removal of fluoride ions when their concentrations exceed 20 mg/L. Besides, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and coordination are the primary mechanisms for fluoride removal. Life cycle assessment shows that using PET as a synthetic material for La-MOF reduces the environmental footprint of waste plastics and also lowers the cost of synthetic materials. Fixed-bed column dynamic tests with real wastewater demonstrated that La-MOF maintained good treatment efficiency over five cycles. The results indicate that the La-MOF not only exhibits excellent removal performance toward low-concentration fluoride, but also achieves the synergistic treatment goal of “treating waste with waste”, demonstrating a very broad application prospect.
