Sericin has great potentials in biomedical applications for its good reactive activity, biocompatibility and biodegradability . However, the undesirable mechanical performance limits its application. Here, we developed a green, facile and economic approach to prepare sericin/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend film. Further, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in situ on the surface of sericin/PVA film via UV-assisted green synthesis method. Mechanical performance, swelling, mass losing and water retention tests showed the blend film had good mechanical performance, hygroscopicity, water retention capacity and low mass losing ratio. Scanning electron microscopy, fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the blending of PVA and sericin promoted the formation of hydrogen bond network between sericin and PVA, thus enhanced the mechanical performance and the stability of sericin, as well as the hygroscopicity and water retention capacity. UV irradiation and AgNPs modification did not affect the inner crystalline structure of sericin/PVA blend film. The inhibition zone and bacteria growth curve assay suggested AgNPs-sericin/PVA film had good antibacterial activities against E. coli and S. aureus . This novel AgNPs-sericin/PVA film shows great potentials in biomedical materials such as wound dressing and skin tissue engineering.

Uncontrolled hemorrhage is the main cause of death in many situations. Substantial efforts have been focused on developing more efficient hemostatic agents. Meanwhile, their safety is also critical for their application. Chitosan is an attractive natural polymer and has been widely investigated for hemostatic application. This study sought to incorporate poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) components and fabricate them into monodisperse millimeter-sized spheres to improve efficiency and safety. Chitosan–PVA spheres were fabricated by electrospraying and ionotropic gelation. The millimeter-sized spheres were obtained by adjusting the electrospraying parameters, including applied voltage, working distance, feed rate, polymer solution and component content. The morphology, chemical structure and thermostability of the spheres were characterized by variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (VP-SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These spheres showed narrow size distribution and good biocompatibility. The hemostatic effect was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo using a blood coagulation timing experiment and a rat liver hemorrhaging model, and chitosan50–PVA50 spheres showed the best effect. PVA contributed to the high swelling degree of the spheres and the enhanced hemostatic effect. These spheres also significantly reduced thromboembolus formation in controlling femoral artery bleeding compared with chitosan powder, providing an efficient and safe hemostasis agent.

A major deficiency of the traditional Fenton technology in practical application is the production of a large amount of sludge. In this paper, we first synthesized a kind of magnetic alginate/PVA hydrogel microspheres by inverse emulsion method along with coprecipitation method. Through the cross-linking action of iron ions , sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol formed a stable interpenetrating network structure, in which the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were stably wrapped. After drying, a novel alginate/PVA hydrogel-supported magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles were obtained. FTIR,XRD,SEM and EDS were used to confirm the composition and structure of the composite material. Furthermore, the resultant alginate/PVA hydrogel-supported Fe 3 O 4 particles perform excellent broad-spectrum catalytic activity for Fenton degradation of organic dyes. Especially, compared with the classical Fenton catalyst, the double-crosslinked structure in the alginate/PVA hydrogel endows the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles with high stability and recyclability. After reuse for six times, the mass loss of the composite material is only 10 %, which can avoid the generation of iron sludge in Fenton-like reaction to the greatest extent.

Pathogenic microorganisms posed perniciousness for postharvest fruits and vegetables, as well as brought potential risks for human health. In this work, pullulan/polyvinyl alcohol (PUL/PVA) nanofibers incorporated with thymol-loaded porphyrin metal-organic framework nanoparticles ( [email protected] NPs) were developed for antibacterial food packaging. PCN-224 MOFs not only act as thymol loading carriers but also highly produce singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) with bactericidal activity . PUL/PVA nanofiber was a promising sustainable substrate because of its good flexibility, biocompatibility and biodegradability . The loading capacity of PCN-224 for thymol was about 20%. The [email protected] /PUL/PVA nanofibers exhibited synergistic antibacterial activities against E. coli (~99%) and S. aureus (~98%) under light irradiation . The cell viability assays and fruit preservation study demonstrated good biosafety of the polymeric film. The results suggested that this novel nanofiber has potential application prospects for food packaging.

Wearable rehabilitation monitoring requires soft strain sensors with mechanical robustness, stable electromechanical responses, and intelligent motion recognition capability. Here, we report a poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyacrylamide (PVA/PAM) double−network hydrogel strain sensor for rehabilitation−oriented wearable monitoring. The hydrogel was prepared by ultraviolet ray (UV)−initiated acrylamide polymerization followed by freeze−thaw−induced PVA crystallization, forming a covalent PAM network interpenetrated with a physically crosslinked PVA network. The resulting hydrogel possessed a compact porous structure, improved stretchability, and stable deformation recovery. The optimized sensor exhibited a tensile strength of approximately 0.52 MPa, an elongation at break of approximately 480%, a response time of 0.12 s, and a recovery time of 0.17 s. It generated repeatable resistance signals under cyclic strain, finger bending, wrist motion, and grip training. Furthermore, the sensor enabled morse−code information transmission and support vector machine (SVM)−based recognition of rehabilitation−related hand states, including straight, bend, and clench. This work provides a soft hydrogel sensing platform for real−time rehabilitation−oriented hand motion, while morse−code encoding provides auxiliary assistance and an emergency communication function.

Stretchable wearable electronics urgently require safe, flexible, and high-energy–density storage solutions. Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) show great promise due to their inherent safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, their large-scale practical implementation is hindered by unconstrained Zn dendrite growth and undesirable parasitic reactions occurring on Zn anodes. To mitigate these limitations, we developed a composite gel electrolyte based on thermoplastic polyurethane and polyvinyl alcohol (TPU/PVA). The semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) formed between TPU and PVA synergistically enhances both mechanical robustness and ionic transport. The electrolyte exhibits high ionic conductivity (42.7 mS cm −1 ) and Zn 2+ transference number (0.83). Its mechanical toughness suppresses dendrite growth, while polar groups promote uniform Zn deposition via solvation regulation. The Zn//Zn symmetric cell achieves stable cycling for more than 2500 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 , and runs for 2400 h at −20 °C. For the Zn//MnO 2 full cell, it delivers a specific capacity of 172 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 , and retains 95.8% of its initial capacity after 2000 cycles. Flexible pouch cells based on TPU/PVA also display stable performance under bending, highlighting their potential for flexible electronics. This work offers a viable electrolyte design strategy for high-performance, safe, and flexible zinc-ion batteries.

Electromagnetic waves endanger precision instruments and human health, driving the demand for multifunctional flexible transparent conductive films (FTCFs) with integrated electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and electric heating to ensure reliable microelectronic performance in extreme environments beyond conventional materials’ limits. However, current FTCFs based on carbon nanomaterials, metal nanowires, or 2D materials still suffer from insufficient oxidation resistance, weak adhesion to substrates, and performance degradation under complex conditions, limiting their practical deployment. To address these, we designed the films, which involved constructing silver nanowire/carbon nanotubes/silver nanoparticle (AgNW/CNT@Ag) conductive networks on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) via spray and spin coating, followed by transferring them into glycerol-modified, sodium alginate (SA)-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite layers. This structure leverages AgNPs grafted on CNTs, forming resistor-capacitor-like configurations to enhance EMI shielding via improved electromagnetic wave absorption. The embedded design, combined with CNT coverage over AgNW, strengthens the adhesion and oxidation resistance by blocking oxygen. Additionally, SA-induced surface wrinkles boost conductivity and wave reflection, while the conductive network enables efficient Joule heating. The resulting film exhibits performance: 9.46 Ω/sq sheet resistance @ 57.7% transmittance, a figure-of-merit (FoM) of 6.31, an EMI shielding effectiveness of 31.42 dB, a saturation temperature of 93.1 °C at 6 V, a relative resistance change (RRC) of 0.92 after 60 oxidation cycles, and an RRC of 0.36 after 1000 bending cycles. This work provides a promising structural design and material strategy for FTCFs, advancing their commercialization in multifunctional electronic applications.

Humidity-responsive actuators are crucial for next-generation wireless microdevices. However, conventional polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based bilayer actuators face challenges such as high actuation thresholds, poor interfacial stability, and a trade-off between robustness and sensitivity. To address these issues, we develop a novel bilayer actuator by integrating a dynamic boric acid (BA)-crosslinked network with an Fe 3+ -coordinated PVA framework. This design constructs a coordination-covalent dual network at the interface: Fe 3+ chelation enhances interlayer adhesion, while the dynamic borate ester bonds regulate PVA crystallization and swelling. The optimized actuator (PFB-5) exhibits exceptional performance, including rapid bending (≈90° within 30 s) under a subtle humidity gradient (contact angle difference ≈21°, RH ≈ 70%), and improved mechanical properties. This “weak gradient–strong response” characteristic enables the actuator to mimic biological motions, such as butterfly wing flapping and pinecone scale opening/closing, demonstrating its potential for bio-inspired soft robotics. Combined with a scalable fabrication strategy, this design offers a promising approach for advanced applications in soft robotics, wearable devices, and MEMS.

Introduced MXene quantum dots (MQDs) as ion-selective fillers to PVA hydrogel created ion transport asymmetry through selective ion interactions. • MQDs–PVA mechanoionic generator achieved 5.5 mA current, 0.81 V voltage, and 0.937 W m −2 power density, well balanced and stable electrical performances. • A 4 × 4 self-powered pressure-sensing array integrated with temporal convolutional network enabled 96.68% handwriting recognition accuracy. Mechanoionic generators based on ionically conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising candidates for self-powered sensing applications, but with limited electrical performances due to insufficient ion-transport asymmetry. Herein, MXene quantum dots (MQDs) as ion-selective nanofillers are introduced into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to regulate ion transport for mechanoionic performance enhancement. Owing to the hydrothermally prepared MQDs with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, the nanoscaled particles are interacting with selected ions and tailoring steric hindrance to diffusion. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies reveal that the MQDs exhibit strong adsorption toward Li + but repulsive to Cl − , thereby amplifying the intrinsic diffusion difference between cations and anions under compressive strain. As the result, the MQDs-PVA mechanoionic generator offers short-circuit current of 5.5 mA, open-circuit voltage of 0.81 V, and maximum power density of 0.937 W m −2 , outperforming the MXene-based counterpart and the most reported piezoionic systems in literature. Furthermore, a 4 × 4 self-powered pressure-sensing array is constructed and integrated with a temporal convolutional network (TCN), which enables handwriting authentication at minimum sample rate. This study has paved the ways to build high performance mechanoionic generators for practical applications.

Dual-crosslinked PVA/PEG films suppress PEG leakage via interpenetrating network. • Synergistic enhancement of mechanical strength and cycling reliability. • Maintained high phase-change enthalpy with reduced crosslinker content. • Effective as external thermal buffers for food temperature maintenance. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), a widely used phase-change material, offers high latent heat but suffers from leakage during the solid-liquid transition. To address this issue, phase-change composite films were fabricated by solution casting using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the matrix and PEG6000 as the energy storage component. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and formaldehyde were used as single crosslinkers, and a dual-crosslinking system combining both agents was further constructed. The effects of single and dual-crosslinking strategies on the overall film performance were systematically compared. TEOS formed an inorganic Si-O-Si network by sol-gel reaction, while formaldehyde constructed an organic network through acetalization with PVA hydroxyl groups. The combination of these two networks formed a complementary organic-inorganic dual-network structure, which restricted PEG chain mobility and enhanced the structural stability of the films. Compared with the uncrosslinked film, the tensile strength and elongation at break of the dual-crosslinked film increased by 60.2% and 122.1%, respectively. After 50 thermal cycles, it showed only a 1.4 J/g loss in phase-change enthalpy, while the leakage ratio remained below 7% after 50 heating-cooling cycles. Notably, this balanced mechanical and thermal performance was achieved with approximately 50% less crosslinker than that used in the single-crosslinked systems. These results demonstrate a low-crosslinker-content strategy for developing flexible external thermal-buffering layers for short-term food-temperature maintenance. A covalently crosslinked PVA-pCD 2:1 interpenetrating hydrogel network is developed. • The PVA-pCD 2:1 hydrogel enables non‑enzymatic, highly selective sweat cholesterol detection. • The PVA-pCD 2:1 hydrogel exhibits stable strain-sensing performance. • A wireless dual-mode sensing device integrated with smartphone readout is developed for personalized health management. The increasing prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases has highlighted the demand for non-invasive and convenient cholesterol monitoring technologies. However, conventional detection methods are limited by bulky instruments and poor enzyme stability, hindering their application in daily monitoring. This study presents a novel multifunctional hydrogel based on a covalently crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-polycyclodextrin 2:1 (PVA-pCD 2:1 ) network, which combines excellent mechanical sensing performance with non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of sweat cholesterol. The citrate-crosslinked interpenetrating network endows the hydrogel with desirable mechanical properties (tensile strength: 1.2 MPa), while the excellent strain-responsive behavior ( GF = 4.35) enables motion monitoring. More importantly, the hydrogel achieves highly selective and sensitive cholesterol detection in sweat, with a sensitivity of 0.15 μA·μM −1 ·cm −2 , a linear range of 0–100 μM, and a detection limit of 0.296 μM. A wearable sensor based on this hydrogel is developed, which integrates simultaneous monitoring of sweat biomarkers and mechanical signals. Data are wirelessly transmitted to a smartphone featuring dual modules for cholesterol and mechanical sensing, providing an innovative platform for personalized health management.

Hydrogels, as a class of functional material, have been used in various fields such as flexible sensors, actuators, and energy devices. Nevertheless, their practical application is often hampered by the poor mechanical properties and susceptibility to dehydration. In this work, using hygroscopic salt lithium nitrate trihydrate (LNH) as the phase-change material, PVA/PAM/LNH salt hydrogels were prepared in a mixture of water and glycerol. The mechanical performance of the hydrogels reached to 326 kPa from 31.5 kPa after the crystallization triggered by crystal seed at room temperature. Since phase transition triggered by crystal seed primarily occurs at the hydrogel surface, the surface contains a higher concentration of LNH crystals, forming an inhomogeneous structure. The composite hydrogel exhibits reversible adhesion, higher water retention ability enabling it to maintain long-term flexibility at low relative humidity. Moreover, the abundant Li + ions present in the gel enable high conductivity, humidity sensitivity and contribute to the piezoelectric and piezoresistive capabilities.
