A ceramic in polymer hybrid solid electrolyte (HSE) based on a poly vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) polymer comprising Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NASICON) ceramic particles was prepared by a simple solution casting method followed by activation in a liquid electrolyte. The prepared HSE exhibits good flexibility, high ionic conductivity of 2.25 × 10−3 S cm−1 at room temperature (RT), and good interface stability. The carbon coated sodium vanadium phosphate (Na3V2(PO4)3/C) cathode was synthesized by the sol-gel method and assembled into batteries with different electrolytes. The batteries based on HSE exhibit better electrochemical performance than that of NASICON ceramic solid electrolytes, which delivers a reversible capacity of 98 mAh · g−1 at 0.2 C and exhibits good capacity retention of 85% after 175 cycles at 0.5 C. Not only does the HSE inherit great flexibility, but also exhibits good interfacial contact with electrodes. The schematic diagram of Na-ion conductivity in ceramic, polymer and HSE was illustrated to demonstrate the sodium ion transport mechanism. The HSE with high ionic conductivity and good flexibility for interfacial contact with electrodes shall provide a designing strategy for different solid-state batteries.

Dry electrode manufacturing methods that do not use NMP can reduce the time and energy required to produce lithium-ion batteries. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a commonly used binder in the dry process. However, there is a lack of research on the effect of dry process parameters on PVDF crystalline types. In our work, the dry process parameters of graphite anode with PVDF as binder are studied, such as the effects of temperature, pressure, and time on the crystallization of PVDF. The effects of powder mixing process and binder content on the performance of dry graphite electrodes are investigated. PVDF processed at 180 °C, 6 MPa, and for 15 min under hot pressing conditions favors the presence of β-crystalline forms. The capacity retention of the prepared electrodes with 10% PVDF loading is superior to that of conventional wet electrodes. Subsequently, reducing PVDF to 5% induces additional cycling stability and rate handling improvements of the dry electrode. Graphical abstract

Various water pollutants, such as endocrine disruptors, dyes, and microorganisms pose significant threats to the ecosystem and human health. However, integrated treatment methods for these pollutants are still scarcely investigated, which greatly impedes the advancement of water treatment technology. In this regard, there is an urgent need for novel combined processing techniques capable of simultaneously removing different types of pollutants from wastewater. Herein, we synthesized a molecularly imprinted MOF/PVDF electrospinning nanofibrous membrane, which is designed for selective adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA), photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB), and efficient inhibition against bacteria in treating wastewater. Firstly, the as-prepared MOF/PVDF molecularly imprinted polymer membrane (MOF/PVDF-MIM) exhibits a higher affinity for BPA compared to other model pollutants attributing to the molecular imprinting effect. The adsorption mechanism was also investigated, indicating that the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model closely match the adsorption process of the MOF/PVDF-MIM on BPA. In addition, the MOF/PVDF-MIM demonstrates excellent photocatalytic performance towards MB, achieving a degradation rate of up to 95.2 % under simulated sunlight irradiation. Moreover, the as-prepared membrane shows enhanced structural stability after several rounds of adsorption-desorption or degradation cycle, with a high adsorption rate of 53.1 % for BPA and a photocatalytic efficiency of 66.6 % for dye pollutants. Finally, it is observed that the as-prepared membrane exhibits excellent bacterial inhibition rates (>99 %) against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In summary, the MOF/PVDF-MIM with outstanding performance in selective adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and bacterial inhibition, can be potentially applied as an ideal filtration membrane for the combined treatments of water processing.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes with sodium alginate (SA) as the “fouled surface” were prepared, in an effort to control irreversible membrane fouling in mimetic sewage treatment processes. The anchored SA layer improved the wetting ability of the PVDF membrane surface and used as a functional antifouling coating to improve the antifouling ability towards organic pollutants. The modified membrane (S-T-0.3) exhibited excellent fouling resistance, with the irreversible fouling ratio (IFR) values of 9%, 1%, 8% and 6% for the pollutant solutions of bovine serum albumin (BSA), SA, humic acid (HA) and mimetic sewage, respectively; while the IFR values of the neat PVDF membrane for all the pollutant solutions were higher than 30%. The fouled surface of the PVDF membrane suppressed the adsorption of hydrophobic pollutants due to the improved hydrophilicity, and prevented hydrophilic pollutants from entering the membrane pores due to hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and counterion effects. The higher water flux recovery ratios were observed because the pollutants were withheld on the modified membrane surface due to the cake layer feature of SA, and could be eliminated by simple flushing, leading to less irreversible fouling. The purpose of this article is to provide a novel and effective antifouling mechanism for the solution of the membrane fouling problem in sewage treatment.

In this contribution, an environmentally friendly electrostatically driven self-assembled layered double hydroxide (LDH)/graphene oxide (GO)/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane was prepared and evaluated. The composite membrane was prepared based on the electrostatic self-assembly between positively charged LDH and negatively charged GO, then above composite was loaded on the PVDF membrane substrate by vacuum suction filtration. The preparation process does not contain organic matter, which was very environmentally friendly. The properties of the composite membrane were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy . The above characterizations showed that the addition of LDH can increase the layer spacing of the GO sheets, the hydrophilicity of the composite membrane, and the removal rates of Cu 2+ and methylene blue (MB). More importantly, the composite membrane has excellent stability in water and maintains a stable removal rate after long-term filtration. And no significant changes occur even after being left in the ultrasonic bath for a while. In general, the LDH/GO/PVDF composite membrane prepared in this study has a great application value and prospect in the water treatment and opens up a new path in improving membrane performance .

In this work, polyethylene glycol grafted graphene (PEG-graphene) was obtained from the amidation reaction between graphene oxide and methoxypolyethylene glycol amine followed by the NaHB 4 reduction and characterized by transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, and thermogravimetric analysis. The PEG-graphene was incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to form novel PEG-graphene/PVDF composites by the solution blending method. The well dispersion of PEG-graphene in the PEG-graphene/PVDF composite was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Based on the results of FTIR, WAXD, differential scanning calorimetry, and XPS, it was found that the presence of PEG-graphene effectively enhanced the electroactive crystalline content of PVDF from 24.6% for the pure PVDF to 90.5% for the PEG-graphene (15 wt.%)/PVDF composite by the interfacial interaction. Moreover, the PEG-graphene (10 wt.%)/PVDF composite near the percolation threshold possessed a much higher dielectric constant of 53.3 compared to the pure PVDF (8.2), and a relatively low dielectric loss of 0.265 at 1000 Hz.

The synthesis of antibiofouling polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes has long been a core pursuit of research community. In this study, MXene nanomaterials intercalated by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were incorporated into the PVDF matrix to fabricate MXene/PVDF composite membranes in the phase inversion process. The characterization results indicated that a DMSO dosage of 40 mL DMSO /g MXene enabled the laminar structure conversion of MXene from multilayer to few-layer, and imparted it with the lowest water contact angle and most negative zeta potential. With a few-layer MXene addition of 1.5 wt%, the resultant composite membrane (FP-1.5) showed a pure water flux of 126.4 L/(m 2 ·h), reaching 2–8 folds of pristine PVDF (PP) membrane and its multilayer rival (MP-1.5), principally due to the optimized membrane morphology as well as increased hydrophilicity and electronegativity. The increased energy barrier of FP-1.5 membrane decreased its biofouling propensity, as verified by the extended Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (XDLVO) theory. The application potential of FP-1.5 membrane was corroborated by its superior antibiofouling performance during both batch and long-term tests. The fabrication strategy of MXene/PVDF composite membranes is expected to lay the foundation for rational design of high-performance MXene-polymer hybrid membrane for sustainable wastewater treatment.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a promising material for piezocatalytic applications due to its exceptional physicochemical properties. However, its practical implementation is fundamentally limited by weak inherent electroactivity. To overcome this limitation, we engineered a highly self-polarized PVDF nanocomposite via water-mediated polarization combined with a multivariate composite design strategy, resulting in markedly enhanced piezocatalytic performance. This hybrid system incorporates rigid electroactive nanofillers within a high-piezoelectric-phase matrix, endowing it with superior electromechanical coupling and catalytic activity. The optimized composite demonstrates remarkable degradation efficiencies of 96.6% for 10 mg L −1 RhB within 10 min and 87.2% for 150 mg L −1 RhB within 2 h, representing an 8.4-fold improvement over commercial PVDF. The material maintains excellent reusability and consistent performance across diverse aqueous environments. Notably, it achieves an unprecedented H 2 O 2 production rate of 1645.8 μmol g −1 · h −1 , surpassing commercial PVDF by nine-fold. This work provides a viable strategy for advancing sustainable environmental remediation and green chemical production.

The photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants has been demonstrated to be both cost-effective and efficient. However, catalysts are prone to loss and migration during use, and recycling them still presents a series of complex and urgent problems. In this work, silver nanoparticles/polyvinylidene fluoride (AgNPs/PVDF) hybrid photocatalytic membrane was prepared in-situ by introducing AgNO₃ into a PVDF casting solution, employing the immersion phase inversion method, and applying UV post-treatment. The membrane exhibits high efficiency in photocatalytically degrading organic compounds, including dyes and antibiotics. Degradation of methylene blue (MB) was found to reach 99.9% within 5 h, and the membrane exhibited excellent cyclic stability over 4 cycles. Photocatalytic degradation of MB was mainly found to be induced by superoxide radicals (·O 2 – ), and the photocatalytic degradation mechanism was explored. The AgNPs/PVDF photocatalytic membrane also demonstrated high antibacterial efficacy against E. coli , impeding bacterial proliferation during application. The highly convenient preparation of photocatalytic membrane offers a new option for efficiently treating wastewater contaminated with organic pollutants. Graphical

In this study a melt conveying device dominated by pulsating elongational flow for inducing β-phase formation in PVDF was developed. The structure and working principles of the new device were introduced in detail. Focusing on flow-induced crystallization, the structure and properties of PVDF/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/tetraphenyl phosphonium chloride (TPPC) films under the pulsating elongational flow were prepared and investigated. 2D-WAXD results demonstrated that this flow promotes the orientation of molecular chains within PVDF/PMMA/TPPC along the extrusion direction. 1D-WAXD and FTIR results confirmed enhanced interactions between both PMMA-PVDF and TPPC-PVDF, promoting increased formation of β-phase. When TPPC content is 1 wt.%, β-phase content reached 83.2%. Piezoelectric tests indicated the films exhibited a piezoelectric coefficient of approximately 22.6 pC/N, generating an open-circuit voltage of 2.64 V and a short-circuit current of 340 nA under an applied pressure of 79.1 kPa. Consequently, pulsating elongational processing enables scalable manufacturing of high-performance PVDF-based piezoelectric films.

A novel polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) cross-linked polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) (PVA-β-CD/PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was prepared via in situ cross-linking in combination with non-solvent induced phase separation. Compared with PVDF/PVA blending membrane, cross-linking solved the issue of interface pores on the membrane surface caused by poor compatibility. And obvious cross-linking polymers were observed inside the membrane, which introduced more hydrophilic hydroxyl groups and thus enhanced the overall hydrophilicity of the membrane. When the PVA/β-CD ratio was 1:2, the cross-linked membrane exhibited better hydrophilicity, the dynamic water contact angle decreased from 74.6° to less than 2.5° in 65s, and the maximum pure water flux of 4561.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 (about 11 times that of PVDF membrane), BSA rejection ratio of 96.7% and a flux recovery rate of 93.5% were obtained. The mean pore size was 0.064 μm, and porosity was 78.44%. It could be concluded that in situ cross-linking simultaneously improved the penetration, separation and antifouling performances of the modified membranes. Our work provides some insights into fabricating high permeable and antifouling PVDF ultrafiltration membranes. Graphical abstract

Herein, excellent UV-absorbing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were fabricated through the pre-irradiation induced graft polymerization method. The PVDF chains irradiated with 60 Co γ -ray were modified with the polymerizable UV absorber 2-[2-hydroxy-5-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]phenyl]-2 H -benzotriazole (RUVA-93). The influences of irradiation dose and monomer concentration on the prepared PVDF-g-PRUVA-93 membranes were investigated, and the optimal condition was eventually obtained. The chemical structures of the films were studied by 1 H-NMR, FTIR, and XRD. UV light transmittance and DSC tests were used to characterize the UV-absorbing performance and thermal property of the PVDF films before and after modification. The results proved that the PRUVA-93 side chains were successfully incorporated into the PVDF main chains and the obtained PVDF- g -PRUVA-93 films possessed remarkable UV-absorbing property. The modified membrane made under the optimized experiment condition could completely block the UV light in the range of 200−387 nm. Additionally, the transmittance of the PVDF- g -PRUVA-93 film could be reduced to 0.04% in 280−320 nm, where the light irradiation could damage polymer materials most seriously.
