Protic salt-based nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon for simultaneous electrochemical detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Danfeng Qin,Ruiyu Xu,Hangjia Shen,Xamxikamar Mamat,Le Wang,Shanshuang Gao,Ying Wang,Nuerbiya Yalikun,Thomas Wagberg,Shiguo Zhang,Qunhui yuan,Yongtao Li,Guangzhi Hu

Nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon (NMC) derived from a single small-molecule protic salt (p-phenylenediamine bisulfate) is used for sensing toxic heavy metal ions. Using Nafion, bismuth and NMC to anchor the glassy carbon electrode surface, the fabricate electrode shows high sensitivity for detecting Cd(II) and Pb(II). The limits of detection (S/N = 3) are estimated to be 0.3 μg L−1 for Cd(II) and 0.4 μg L−1 for Pb(II), respectively, which are 10 and 25 times lower than the maximum acceptable content for drinking water recommended by the WHO. Furthermore, the sensor is successfully used to analyze Cd(II) and Pb(II) in tap-water with high anti-interference capability and good recovery.

PB@Co3O4 nanoparticles as both oxidase and peroxidase mimics and their application for colorimetric detection of glutathione

Wenshu Yang,Jinhui Hao,Zhe Zhang,Bailin Zhang

Co3O4-modified Prussian blue (PB) nanocubes (PB@Co3O4) were prepared by a simple water-bath method with CoCl2 as the Co source. TEM, SEM, XRD and XPS results indicated the uniform distribution of island-like spinel-phase Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surfaces of the PB nanocubes (∼200 nm). The PB@Co3O4 NPs exhibited both intrinsic oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities and were observed to rapidly oxidize the peroxidase substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with or without hydrogen peroxide at acidic pH values. In contrast, PB nanocubes or Co3O4 NPs alone could not efficiently oxidize TMB without H2O2. The enzyme-like activity of PB@Co3O4 NPs was also influenced by the working pH and temperature. Based on the oxidase-like activity of PB@Co3O4 NPs, a facile colorimetric biosensor for detection of glutathione was successfully fabricated, and displayed a linear range of 0.1 to 10 μM (R = 0.9740) and limit of detection of 0.021 μM (S/N = 3). These results demonstrate the potential applications of PB@Co3O4 NPs in bioanalysis and biodetection.

Influence of complexing agent on the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions by modified mesoporous SiO2

Yu Liu,Zimo Lou,Yue Sun,Xiaoxin Zhou,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

In this study, SiO 2 -EDTA was prepared by silanization reaction between N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl) ethylenediamine triacetic acid, trisodium salt (EDTA-silane) and hydroxyl groups for enhanced removal of Pb(II), Pb(II)-Cit (the clathrate generated by Pb(II) and trisodium citrate dehydrate(Cit)) and Pb(II)-EDTA(20%) from aqueous solutions. SiO 2 -EDTA composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, EDX-mapping, FTIR, XPS and TGA analyses. The influence of solution pH, initial concentration, contact time and co-existing interferents were also studied. Results demonstrated that the composite successfully adsorbed 147.52, 107.65 and 124.18 mg g −1 of Pb(II), Pb(II)-Cit, and Pb(II)-EDTA (20%), respectively with the initial Pb(II) concentration of 100 mg L −1 . Kinetics study revealed that the adsorption rate was significantly high at the beginning and then reached to equilibrium within 1.0 h. Moreover, Pb(II) adsorption capacities were found to considerably affected by co-existing cations and not inhibited by natural organic matter (NOM). Characterization analyses confirmed that EDTA was successfully assembled on SiO 2 which had been used as a supporting matrix due to its huge specific surface area. Findings from this study suggested that the present composite could be considered as a promising adsorbent for large scale treatment of wastewater containing elevated Pb(II) concentration.

Electrochemical Detection of Pb(II) Ions in Aqueous Solution by Carbon Nanospheres Modified Boron-Doped Diamond Electrode

Wang Nan,Li Jiaqi,Ma Yitian,Xu Ahua,Tao Huajin,Huang Baoyu,Hao Song,Liao Jianjun,Lin Shiwei,Tang Yipeng,Hou Ying,Bian Chao,Li Xiaogan

In this paper, a sensor using carbon nanospheres modified boron-doped diamond (CNs/BDD) electrode for detecting heavy metal ions rapidly in aqueous solution is studied. The CNs/BDD electrode is characterized systematically by techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical properties of the CNs/BDD electrode, BDD electrode and Au electrode are compared by cyclic voltammetry. It is found that the CNs/BDD electrode has more negative hydrogen evolution potential, a wider potential window and a larger effective electrode area, which is conducive to the accurate detection of heavy metal ions. The square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) is applied to assess and quantify the sensing capability of the CNs/BDD electrode. The effects of deposition potential, deposition time and other experimental parameters on the detection performance are studied. Under the optimal experimental conditions, CNs/BDD electrodes exhibit remarkable detection capabilities for lead (Pb(II) ions, in which a linear relationship within the concentration range from 1 to 140 µg/L with a 0.9994 correlation coefficient is obtained. Meanwhile, it has excellent repeatability with a low relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.57%, and the achieved actual limit of detection (LOD) reaches 0.01 µg/L. In addition, the interference experiment results show that except for Cd(II) ions and Cu(II) ions, other common ions in water have little interference to Pb(II) ion detection. The Pb(II) ions recovery rates are 89.1–115.7% in the real water samples. Experimental analysis indicates that the CNs/BDD electrode possesses the advantages of low detection limit, short detection time, and simple experimental equipment, which meets the requirements of Pb(II) ions field detection.

Design and Characterization of Concave Hollow Double-Layer Nanospheres for Efficient Cd(II) and Pb(II) Adsorption

Fangfen Jing,Xin Xu,Weiwei Lu,Mingzhu Jin,Xinyang He,Rongtai Yu

Polymer-based adsorbents have emerged as promising candidates for heavy-metal remediation due to their tailorable porosity and multifunctional surfaces, yet challenges persist in achieving both structural precision and adsorption efficiency. Here, we report a concave hollow double-layer nanosphere (CHDN) synthesized through a facile self-assembly strategy engineered for selective capture of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. Comprehensive characterization via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the hierarchical architecture with abundant amino/hydroxyl moieties. The CHDN demonstrated exceptional adsorption capacities of 198.40 mg/g for Cd(II) and 60.34 mg/g for Pb(II), outperforming conventional adsorbents. Isotherm analysis revealed Cd(II) adsorption followed the Sips model (R2 > 0.99), while Pb(II) adhered to the Langmuir model, suggesting monolayer and heterogeneous binding mechanisms, respectively. Kinetic studies further corroborated chemisorption dominance through pseudo-second-order fitting for Cd(II) and Elovich compatibility for Pb(II). We propose a synergistic mechanism involving ligand complexation and ion exchange, facilitated by the dual functionality of surface groups and structural advantages of the concave architecture. This work provides a blueprint for designing spatially engineered polymers for environmental remediation.

Prodigiosin Loaded SN-PB@PG NPs-Based Multimodal Therapy for the Healing of Bacterial Infected Chronic Wounds

Zhou Wu,Li Chang,Changling Li,Pengxiang Xu,Liuying Liu,Aidi Tong,Yilong Li,Chunyi Tong,Bin Liu

Healing of infected chronic wounds faces dual challenges: persistent inflammation and impaired angiogenesis. To address these, SN-PB@PG nanocomplexes were prepared by hybridisation of nitroprusside (SNP) with Prussian blue (SN-PB NPs) and loaded with prodigiosin (PG). Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, SN-PB NPs generated mild hyperthermia, facilitating the release of nitric oxide (NO) and PG to combat bacterial biofilms and multidrug-resistant pathogens. The in vivo assay using diabetic infected wounds demonstrated that SN-PB@PG NPs with NIR reduced the wound area to 10.6% by the 11th day, which is superior to that of control group (29.6%). In the flap transplantation experiments, the data showed SN-PB@PG NPs with NIR group only have a necrobiosis of 3.8% of flaps on the 8th day, which is superior to 31.3% of the control group. Additionally, the release of NO promoted vascular regeneration by up-regulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (CD31), and regenerated sarcomeric tissue by down-regulating MMP-9. The results indicated that the combination of SN-PB@PG NPs with gas and photothermal therapy exerted a combined antibacterial and wound healing effect. Compared to traditional clinical methods such as surgical debridement and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, this new strategy efficiently addresses issues of infection and healing, which is convenient for clinical application.

Preparation of magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres for enhanced adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Xueling Liu,Yajing Wang,Xiaofen Wu,Yi Wang,Guozhi Fan,Yanjun Huang,Lei Zhang

In this study, magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres (MDCM) were prepared by reverse emulsion-double crosslinking method (carbodiimide followed by glutaraldehyde) for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The obtained magnetic adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, VSM, BET, and 13 C NMR. The effects of the pH, contact time, initial concentration, and competitive metal cations (Na(I), Ca(II), or Mg(II)) on Pb(II) adsorption were investigated. The results revealed that MDCM exhibited high removal performance over a wide pH range and in the presence of competitive metal cations. The maximum adsorption capacity of MDCM for Pb(II) is 214.63 mg g −1 at pH 3, which is higher than most recently reported magnetic adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms can be described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. In addition, MDCM is easy to regenerate and can be reused five cycles with high adsorption capacity. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed by FTIR and XPS analysis. Overall, MDCM has practical application potential in removing Pb(II) from contaminated wastewater due to its high adsorption efficiency, good reusability, and convenient magnetic separation.

Synergistic effects of microplastic stability and adsorption rate on co-transport of microplastics and Pb under surfactant

Juehao Ai,Bowen Du,Xiaolong Gao,Jiachang Qiao,Shi Zhou,Xianqiang Yin,Yanji Jiang,Jun Wang,Yajie Zuo,Huimin Sun

The emergence of microplastics (MPs) and their coexistence with heavy metal contaminants pose potential risks to the safety of the subsurface environment and public health. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the co-transport of MPs (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)) with the heavy metal Pb(II) under the surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)). In this study, column experiments were performed to investigate the co-transport of MPs and Pb(II) under surfactants. The co-transport mechanism of MPs with Pb(II) under surfactant was revealed by MPs stability and batch adsorption experiments. Experimental results showed that the presence of Pb(II) did not influence the mobility of MPs under CTAB and SDBS; however, MPs can affect the mobility of Pb(II). Specifically, under CTAB, the MPs increased the recovery rate of Pb(II) from 86% to 87.55%–97.55%. However, under SDBS, the high mobility of PS, PE, and PP inhibited the transport of Pb(II), and the recoveries of Pb(II) decreased from 79% to 57.53%–70.96%. The low mobility of PTFE and PMMA slightly promoted the transport of Pb(II). This could be attributed to two reasons. One aspect is the adsorption rate of Pb(II) by MPs, which plays a pivotal role in influencing the transport tendency of Pb(II) with MPs. Another aspect is the MPs stability, as greater stability enhances their dispersity and accelerates the adsorption rate of Pb(II), thereby facilitating the co-transport of Pb(II) with MPs. This study could provide valuable insights for assessing the transport and environmental impact of MPs and heavy metals in the presence of surfactants.

Lattice stabilization and strain homogenization in Sn-Pb bottom subcells enable stable all-perovskite tandems solar cells

Bai Yang,Meng Yuanyuan,Yang Ming,Tian Ruijia,Wang Jingnan,Jiao Boxin,Pan Haibin,Gao Jiangwei,Wang Yaohua,Sun Kexuan,Zhou Shujing,Lu Xiaoyi,Song Zhenhua,Liu Chang,Ge Ziyi

All-perovskite tandem solar cells (PTSCs) offer a promising approach to surpass the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit, driven by efficiently reducing thermalization and transmission losses. However, the efficiency and stability of the narrow-bandgap (NBG) subcells, which are essential for PTSC performance, remain severely constrained by challenges such as lattice instability, strain accumulation and halide migration under illumination. This study introduces a rigid sulfonate-based molecule, sodium naphthalene-1,3,6-trisulfonate (NTS), into tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskites, where it strengthens the Sn-I bond through Sn-trisulfonate coordination and reduces light-induced dynamic lattice distortions via the rigid NTS backbone. These molecular interactions alleviate strain heterogeneity within the lattice and homogenize the Sn-Pb compositional gradient, thereby enhancing the structural integrity and long-term stability of Sn-Pb perovskites under operational conditions. As a result, Sn-Pb single-junction perovskite solar cells (PSCs) achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.2%. When integrated into a tandem configuration, the device attains an impressive PCE of 29.6% (certified PCE of 29.2%, one of the highest certified efficiencies to date), with 93.1% of the initial efficiency retained after 700 h of continuous operation. By stabilizing the lattice structure, this work lays a solid foundation for achieving both high efficiency and long-term durability in next-generation perovskite photovoltaics.

Asymmetrical Bullet-Shaped imprinted nanomotors for enhanced selective Pb(II) Removal: On-the-Move recognition and Capturing

Jinxin Liu,Pan Wang,Hengjia Zhu,Jianming Pan

Conventional heavy metal adsorbents are limited by passive mass transfer mechanisms that constrain separation efficiency in practical applications. Herein, we report a novel approach integrating autonomous nanomotor propulsion with selective molecular recognition for enhanced Pb(II) removal. Bullet-shaped Janus nanomotor adsorbents (JSNMs@IIPs) were synthesized through asymmetric emulsion templating, featuring silver nanoparticle-catalyzed propulsion chambers and ion-imprinted polymer recognition shells. Under H 2 O 2 fuel (10.0 wt%), JSNMs@IIPs exhibited controlled autonomous motion (23.1μm s −1 ) that delivered significant kinetic enhancement with 265 % faster adsorption rates compared to static systems. The JSNMs@IIPs achieved maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity (158.5 mg g −1 at 318 K) while maintaining high selectivity (k = 16.8–61.3) against competing metal ions and excellent regenerability (93 % capacity retention over seven cycles). XPS analysis revealed coordination-based adsorption through Pb-N interaction formation within pre-organized imprinted cavities, while autonomous motion enhanced mass transfer through active convection. This work establishes motion-enhanced molecular recognition for advanced separation technologies, demonstrating that nanomotor propulsion can simultaneously improve kinetics and maintain selectivity in complex separation challenges.

Decoupling photothermal-mechanical degradation through lattice-stabilizing networks in Sn–Pb perovskites and all-perovskite tandem solar cells

Pan Haibin,Bai Yang,Sun Kexuan,Yang Ming,Tian Ruijia,Meng Yuanyuan,Gao Jiangwei,Wang Yaohua,Wang Jingnan,Zhou Shujing,Song Zhenhua,Xiaoyi Lu,Liu Chang,Ge Ziyi

All-perovskite tandem solar cells (PTSCs) demonstrate exceptional potential to surpass the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) theoretical limit. However, practical implementation faces critical challenges due to a self-reinforcing photothermal-mechanical degradation mechanism originating from multiscale physical couplings. In this study, a multifunctional polyamine ligand triphenyltriamine thiophosphate (TPTA) was introduced into the tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite solution system to establish an I-Sn-N coordination-mediated lattice stabilization framework, and the photothermal-mechanical coupling path was cut off from multiple aspects such as suppressing periodic oscillations and regulating stress. Consequently, single-junction Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs) achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.4% and retaining 94.9% of initial performance after 950 hours of maximum power point (MPP) tracking. When the device is integrated into the 2-terminal (2 T) tandem architecture, its PCE reaches a significant level of 29.6 % (certified PCE of 28.9%), and 93.4% of the initial efficiency can be maintained after 900 hours continuous operation.

Portable electrochemical detection of lactate in Sepsis serum based on PB@PDA/LOX modified screen printed carbon electrodes

Wei Wang,Yi Zheng,Ran Xia,uqiao Cheng,Shunan Lv,Nuo Xu,Xueyin Shi,Haiying Ji,Weiwei Li

Sepsis induces excessive inflammation and immune dysfunction via infection, often progressing to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Serum lactate is a key biomarker for evaluating tissue perfusion, oxygen metabolism, and prognosis in sepsis, making rapid, accurate, and portable lactate detection critical for sepsis management. To address this, we developed a portable screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with a PB@PDA/LOX composite. PB nanoparticles enhance electrocatalysis to accelerate electron transfer and reduce oxidation overpotential, enabling the sensor to exhibit a linear response (2–1000 μmol/L, LOD = 1.195 μM) that matches lactate levels in pretreated sepsis serum; its low oxidation potential (~0.1 V vs. Ag/AgCl) also avoids interference from coexisting substances. Glutaraldehyde (via dual-terminal aldehyde bridging) immobilizes LOX, while PDA forms a stable “substrate-PB-PDA-LOX” structure-this provides a biomimetic microenvironment to prevent LOX inactivation, reduces non-specific protein adsorption, and extends detection lifetime. The mass-produced SPCE (1 cm × 2 cm, low cost) integrates with compact detectors for “drop-and-detect” functionality, with detection time < 5 min. Via multi-component synergy, this modified electrode overcomes limitations of existing sensors (stability, sensitivity, anti-interference, portability) and offers an efficient lactate detection tool for sepsis patient assessment and animal model mechanism studies.
