Epichlorohydrin-modified chitosan-Schiff base composite (CS/24Cl/ECH) prepared via the one-pot reaction as characterized by Fourier transform Infra-Red spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). Its removal ability of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution was investigated. The adsorption of Pb(II) ions carried out at different initial pH, dose of CS/24-Cl/ECH, contact time and co-existing ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) ions was 170 mg/g. Finally, based on the absorption results, the adsorption of Pb(II) ions was fitted by single-layer Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics model. The absorption mechanism of Pb(II) ions was controlled by chemical coordination Pb(II) ions with the active sites on the surface of CS/24Cl/ECH composite. Also, CS/24Cl/ECH showed excellent recyclable efficiency up to 5 cycle and potential sorbent for other heavy metal ions.

Due to high surface area and large pore volume, nanostructure zinc oxides/its composites have gained a lot of research interests for heavy metal removal from water. Low stability of the ZnO at low and high pH is however a problem. In this work, ZnO@MgO, ZnO and MgO are synthesized via co-precipitation, followed by calcinations. The samples show remarkable removal of Pb(II) from water when compared to commercial samples; the best results is obtained using ZnO@MgO which exhibit adsorption capacity of 250 mg g −1 equivalent to 100% removal capacity. The optimum removal capacity is retained in a wide range of pH (i.e. pH 6–9) at temperature 30 °C. Low adsorption capacity coupled with low stability in acidic condition; a problem associated with ZnO-based adsorbents when it is being used for the removal of heavy metals from water/wastewater; often prevents this system from being practically used; is overcome here. The ZnO@MgO adsorbent shows chemical stability over wide range of pH(2–9). The adsorption is chemisorptive in nature, endothermic and evidently aided by high surface heterogeneity (△H° ˜25 kJ mol-1 and △S°˜110.6 J mol −1 K −1 ). Appreciable adsorption capacity over wide range of pH-value, high recovery and reusability results from nanosphere morphology of the composite sample; all these novel properties are attributed to the strong electronic coupling effect between MgO and ZnO. This work is expected to spur further research on ZnO-based composite materials in allied areas, including (i) mitigation of atmospheric pollution and (ii) water treatment processes.

The efficient removal of heavy metals from aqueous environment is imperative and challenging. A novel ternary composite constructed of diaminopyridine polymers, graphene oxide, and ferrite magnetic nanoparticles was designed by a facile in situ polymerization strategy for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. Detailed characterization of morphological, chemical, and magnetic properties was employed systematically to confirm the formation of the composite material. Batch adsorption experiment studies suggested that the composite was an excellent adsorbent for Pb(II) which was easily collected after use via exposure to an external magnetic field for 30 s. The effects of different parameters such as solution pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial Pb(II) concentration, temperature, and co-existing ions were examined. The maximum adsorption capacity at pH = 5 was estimated to be 387.2 mg g −1 at 298 K by the Langmuir isotherm model, accompanied by favorable adsorption recyclability according to the investigation of regeneration experiments. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the Pb(II) adsorption via our ternary composite was endothermic and spontaneous. The corresponding removal performance for effluent containing Pb(II) from the battery industry was successfully examined. The present results indicated that our designed adsorbent is beneficial to the practical Pb(II) removal in wastewater purification.

In this study, lignin extracted from rice husk was used to synthesis double network hydrogel adsorbent, named RH-CTS/PAM gel. RH-CTS/PAM gel exhibited macroporous structure and high buried water content, which gave rise to the exceptional adsorption performance. As results, in individual systems, the equilibrium time of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) with initial concentration of 200 mg/L could be reached within 10 min, with the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 374.32, 196.68 and 268.98 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption rate and capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) in multicomponent systems were lower than that of individual systems. However, in a few cases of ternary system, higher adsorption rate and capacity was observed compare to binary systems. Adsorption mechanism indicated that both oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing functional groups played a dominant role during the adsorption process, and mainly through chemical interaction along with a small amount of physical interaction.

A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor based on CdSe@CdS quantum dots (QDs) functionalized MoS2 modified electrode was developed for sensitive detection of Pb(II) using HRP-mimicking DNAzyme biocatalytic precipitation (BCP) for ECL signal quenching. Polycationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and negatively charged QDs were adsorbed on the surface of MoS2, in sequence, to form the MoS2–QDs composites, which were employed as a matrix for the immobilization of the G-rich DNA strand, i.e., T30695. The MoS2–QDs were characterized by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. CdSe@CdS QDs can produce an ECL signal using 0.1 M K2S2O8 as a co-reactant. T30695 can combine with Pb(II) ions to form a stable parallel G-quadruplex. The G-quadruplex can further combine with hemin to form DNAzyme, which can catalyze H2O2 and oxidize 4-chloro-1-naphthol (4-CN) to produce an insoluble precipitation of benzo-4-chlorohexadienone on the surface of the sensor. When the concentration of Pb(II) in the solution was increased, more of DNAzyme was generated and subsequently more 4-CN molecules were oxidized catalytically, leading to a decrease of the ECL signal. Using this quenching strategy, the ECL signal of the biosensor was linearly dependent on the logarithm of the Pb(II) concentration ranging from 1.0 × 10−15 to 1.0 × 10−11 M with a detection limit of 0.98 f M. The stability and selectivity of the sensor were also investigated. The sensor was applied in the determination of Pb(II) in the real water samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Selective adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) by surfactant-modified and unmodified zeolites is discussed in this paper. The influences of pH, ionic strength, temperature, and adsorption time on Cr(VI) and Pb(II) adsorption are studied, The characteristics of the surface and inner structures of zeolites before and after modification are analyzed through infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis, and zeta potential measurement. Results show that the characteristics of electric charge on the zeolite surface had changed after modification, which resulted in selective adsorption of Cr(VI) and Pb(II). Moreover, kinetic study reveals that adsorption by the different zeolites coincides with the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The intraparticle diffusion equation proves that the Cr(VI) adsorption is mainly electrostatic, whereas Pb(II) adsorption proceeds via intrapore and electrostatic adsorption on the zeolite surface. This difference in mechanisms endows selectivity of metal ion adsorption by the modified zeolites. This study provides a reference on zeolite modification for use in various applications, such as wastewater treatment.

A novel cross-linked chitosan-poly(aspartic acid) chelating resin was synthesized by combining chitosan and poly(aspartic acid) derivative with crosslinker. The structure and morphology of the resin containing disulfide bonds were characterized by 1 H NMR, FT-IR, Raman spectra, and SEM. Adsorption of Pb(II) and Hg(II) from aqueous solution by the resulted chelating resin was investigated in batch techniques. The result of the Raman spectra suggests that the disulfide bonds in the resin also play an important role in the adsorption of Pb(II) and Hg(II). The kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models, which is suggestive of following closely the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, and D–R isotherm models. The results of equilibrium isotherm reveal that the empirical Langmuir equation provides an accurate description of the experimental data under the studied concentration range. In addition, thermodynamic and regeneration properties of the adsorbent were also studied.

The modified walnut shell biochar (WBC) was prepared through zinc-iron bimetallic oxide modification (ZF@WBC) at 600 °C under oxygen-limited conditions in this study. Through adsorption experiments, characterization analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the adsorption properties of ZF@WBC to Pb (II) were investigated and the mechanism underlying such adsorption was elucidated. Characterization results showed that the surface area (375.9709 m 2 /g) and total pore volume (0.205319 cm 3 /g) of ZF@WBC were significantly greater than those of walnut shell biochar. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZF@WBC for Pb (II) was found to be 104.26 mg/g, which is 2.57 times higher than that of WBC according to the adsorption experiments conducted. The observed adsorption behavior followed both the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, suggesting that chemisorption plays a major role in the absorption process. Based on SEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR characterizations along with DFT calculations performed in this study, it can be concluded that surface complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, physical absorption are among the main mechanisms responsible for absorption of Pb (II) by ZF@WBC. Furthermore, even in the presence of interfering ions at different concentrations, ZF@WBC exhibited a removal rate above 70% for Pb (II). Therefore, ZF@WBC has great potential as an effective absorbent for removing Pb (II) from wastewater, while also offering opportunities for biomass waste resource utilization.

Utilizing plant wastes to treat Pb(II)-polluted water bodies offers a sustainable solution, but concerns over adsorption ability and separation efficiency limit its application. This study investigates the preparation and application of three-dimensional macroporous network-structured modified wood flour (WTX and TZX) for efficient Pb(II) removal. The adsorbents were synthesized through xanthate modification of defatted (TZ) and non-defatted (WT) wood flour, followed by lyophilization to achieve a stable porous structure. The optimal preparation condition involved mixing 1.0 g of original wood flour with 2 mL of CS 2 in a strong base environment at 25 °C for 3 h. Both WTX and TZX exhibited similar three-dimensional structure and good solid-liquid separation performance. Pb(II) removal rates reached 61 % for WTX and 54 % for TZX within 45 min. The maximum adsorption capacities were 221.73 mg/L for WTX and 210.53 mg/g for TZX, significantly higher than untreated wood flour. Despite similar appearances and maximum Pb(II) removal abilities, the defatting pretreatment did not enhance mechanical properties or adsorption performance. Pb(II) immobilization occurred via electrostatic attraction, complexation and precipitation, with functional groups like –O–C (=S)–SNa, –OH, –NH 2 and –COOH playing key roles. An economic assessment highlighted the cost-effectiveness of the adsorbents, with an estimated treatment cost of 3.21 US$/ton of wastewater. The study underscores the potential of waste wood flour biomass as a sustainable, low-cost solution for heavy metal remediation.

MIL-101(Fe) has received more and more attention in wastewater treatment, and how to further improve its stability and sorption capacity has become a research focus. In this study, metal Mg was used to dope MIL-101(Fe) to construct Mg@MIL-101(Fe) with bimetallic sites, which was then mixed with NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) to successfully fabricate Mg@MIL-101(Fe)/NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) (MOM) bis-MIL composites. MOM not only contains a large number of sorption sites but also exhibits excellent stability and reusability, realizing efficient sorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. In addition, the sorption performance and mechanism of Pb(II) on MOM were investigated by the characterizations of SEM, BET, TG, XRD, FTIR and XPS, as well as the kinetic and thermodynamic analyses. The sorption of Pb(II) on MOM is in accordance with the Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum sorption capacity of Pb(II) on MOM derived from the Langmuir model fitting is 320.941 mg·g −1 . The sorption of Pb(II) on MOM is strongly affected by pH, but not by ionic strength, which indicates that MOM has good resistance to salt interferences. The strong complexation of carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino functional groups with Pb(II) is the main sorption mechanism of Pb(II) on MOM, and electrostatic interaction and ion exchange also contribute to the sorption. In conclusion, MOM has strong practical application prospects in the treatment of Pb(II)-containing wastewater.

Corn stalk was used as the initial material to prepare a corn stalk matrix-g-polyacrylonitrile-based adsorbent. At first, the corn stalk was treated with potassium hydroxide and nitric acid to obtain the corn stalk-based cellulose (CS), and then the CS was modified by 2-bromoisobutyrylbromide (2-BiBBr) to prepare a macroinitiator. After that, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was grafted onto the macroinitiator by single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). A novel adsorbent AO CS-g-PAN was, therefore, obtained by introducing amidoxime groups onto the CS-g-PAN with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OH · HCl). FTIR, SEM and XPS were applied to characterize the structure of AO CS-g-PAN. The adsorbent was then employed to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II), and it exhibited a predominant adsorption performance on Pb(II) and Cu(II). The effect of parameters, such as temperature, adsorption time, pH and the initial concentration of metal ions on adsorption capacity, were examined in detail during its application. Results suggest that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) and Cu(II) was 231.84 mg g–1 and 94.72 mg g−1, and the corresponding removal efficiency was 72.03% and 63%, respectively. The pseudo-second order model was more suitable to depict the adsorption process. And the adsorption isotherm of Cu(II) accorded with the Langmuir model, while the Pb(II) conformed better to the Freundlich isotherm model.

A reduced graphene oxide supported Au-Bi bimetallic nanoparticles (rGO/Au-Bi) have been synthesized and employed as a novel sensing platform for electrochemical determination of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ simultaneously. The successful formation of rGO/Au-Bi nanocomposites was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At the rGO/Au-Bi nanocomposites modified electrode, two well-resolved voltammetric peaks for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were observed in differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) measurements. Under the optimized conditions (pH 4.5, deposition potential −1.0 V, deposition time 200 s), the DPASV response currents demonstrated good linearity with the concentration of Pb 2+ (0.1–500 μg L −1 ) and Cd 2+ (0.1–300 μg L −1 ). The detection limits was 0.05 μM for Pb 2+ and 0.02 μM for Cd 2+ , respectively. In addition, the proposed electrode exhibited outstanding resistance to potentially interferents, high stability and excellent repeatability. Satisfactory application of proposed electrode was also demonstrated by the determination of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in real river water samples.
