Selenium-modulated Pt/Al2O3 electronic structure induces deactivation during catalytic CO oxidation

Tian Tang,Jianing Ma,Jingyu Xue,Xiaoqiang Shen,Jinfei Chen,Linhan Yu,Vladislav Rac,Vesna Rakić,Xinbao Li,Hao Song,Xuesen Du

Industrial sources, such as steel and power activities continue to emit substantial amounts of CO, but have not received the same level of attention as mobile sources due to a lack of relevant regulations. This work reports that a commercial Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst used in vehicle CO catalytic converters may face severe selenium (Se) poisoning deactivation from industrial sources. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst (250 °C) decreased from 2.18 s −1 to 0.12 s −1 with only 0.49 wt% (ICP) Se deposition. Se deposition causes the Pt 5d orbital shift to a higher energy state, raising the oxidation state of platinum. As a result, the back-donation from the 5d electrons of Pt to the 2π* antibonding orbital of the adsorbed CO molecule is inhibited, weakening the bonding between Pt/Al 2 O 3 and the CO antibonding orbital, thereby significantly reducing CO activation ability. DRIFTS results, combined with apparent and microscopic kinetics, indicate that the surface of Se deposited Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst remains O* available (500 K, θ O* = 0.16), and the rate-controlling step changes from O 2  + 2* → 2O* to CO + * → CO*. The work suggests that the application of CO catalytic oxidation technology for industrial source should fully consider the toxic effect of Se, but is often neglected.

High-performance core-shell Pt3Cu@Pt/C nanocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Yunlin Bai,Tianhe Li,Hao Chen,Yang Xu,Jiahao Ji,Guanghua Wei,Junfang Cheng

Developing efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is critical for advancing proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). While Pt-based alloy catalysts exhibit enhanced ORR activity, their disordered nanostructures often compromise durability. In this work, a carbon-supported Pt 3 Cu alloy catalyst with a core-shell architecture (Pt 3 Cu@Pt/C) was synthesized via a controlled impregnation-reduction method followed by acid-washing to construct a Pt-rich shell. Comprehensive physicochemical characterizations confirmed the formation of a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with a Pt 3 Cu core and a Pt-rich shell. Alloying with Cu was found to downshift the Pt d-band center, thereby optimizing the adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates. Electrochemical evaluations revealed that the Pt 3 Cu@Pt/C catalyst exhibited a mass activity (MA) of 0.37 A mg −1 and an electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 89.43 m 2  g −1 , surpassing commercial Pt/C. Although the core-shell treatment slightly reduced ORR activity compared to untreated Pt 3 Cu/C, the Pt 3 Cu@Pt/C catalyst demonstrated exceptional durability, retaining >70% of its initial ECSA and showing only a 27% decay in MA after 30,000 accelerated stress test cycles, far outperforming both Pt 3 Cu/C and commercial Pt/C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Pt shell increased Cu vacancy formation energy by 0.8 eV, effectively suppressing Cu dissolution and enhancing structural stability. This work highlights the synergistic electronic and geometric effects of core-shell nanostructures in balancing ORR activity and durability, providing insights for designing advanced Pt-based catalysts.

Economical Pt-Free Catalysts for Counter Electrodes of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Mingxing Wu,Xiao Lin,Yudi Wang,Liang Wang,Wei Guo,Daidi Qi,Xiaojun Peng,Anders Hagfeldt,Michael Grätzel,Tingli Ma

Three classes (carbides, nitrides and oxides) of nanoscaled early-transition-metal catalysts have been proposed to replace the expensive Pt catalyst as counter electrodes (CEs) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Of these catalysts, Cr3C2, CrN, VC(N), VN, TiC, TiC(N), TiN, and V2O3 all showed excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of I3– to I– in the electrolyte. Further, VC embedded in mesoporous carbon (VC–MC) was prepared through in situ synthesis. The I3–/I– DSC based on the VC–MC CE reached a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.63%, comparable to the photovoltaic performance of the DSC using a Pt CE (7.50%). In addition, the carbide catalysts demonstrated catalytic activity higher than that of Pt for the regeneration of a new organic redox couple of T2/T–. The T2/T– DSCs using TiC and VC–MC CEs showed PCEs of 4.96 and 5.15%, much higher than that of the DSC using a Pt CE (3.66%). This work expands the list of potential CE catalysts, which can help reduce the cost of DSCs and thereby encourage their fundamental research and commercial application.

Tunable Exchange Bias in Hofmann MOF-Derived α-Fe2O3/Pt magnetic composites

Su-Yun Zhang,Zhu Ding,Zihao Wang,Junzhe Tao,Yu-Jia Zeng

The pursuit of strong, tunable, and thermally robust exchange bias (EB) is not only a fundamental scientific challenge but also a critical prerequisite for advancing spintronic technologies. Bottom-up designed nanostructures offer a versatile platform for engineering EB, owing to their precise control over composition, morphology, and assembly. However, studies on the EB effect in MOF-derived magnetic nanocomposites remains less unexplored. This study reports the EB effect in α-Fe2O3/Pt composites obtained via the pyrolysis of Hofmann-like Pt/Fe MOFs at 450 °C, 550 °C, and 650 °C. The results show that Pt particles are dispersed on the α-Fe2O3 particles, forming α-Fe2O3/Pt composites. The magnetic properties of samples are characterized by zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) susceptibility as well as hysteresis loop measurements. Notably, a significant EB effect is observed in all samples and the optimized sample pyrolyzed at 450 °C exhibits the largest HEB of 2099 Oe at 2 K under a cooling field of 60 kOe, which exceeds that of pure α-Fe2O3 and other α-Fe2O3 based composites. These findings highlight calcination temperature as a critical parameter for tailoring EB effect in MOF-derived oxide/metal nanocomposites.

MXene-Supported Pt Catalysts for Methylcyclohexane Dehydrogenation: Activity, Stability and Pathway Regulation

Zhao Zhang,Yueer Ma,Chuanyin Xiong,Yuxia Luo,Shuai Chang,Junjun Liu,Hui Chang

Herein, a series of few layer MXene (Ti3C2Tx, Ti3CNTx, Ti2NTx, Ti2CTx, Cr2CTx, Nb2CTx, and V2CTx) are synthesized via a LiF/HCl etching-exfoliation method and employed as supports for Pt catalysts in fixed-bed methylcyclohexane (MCH) dehydrogenation reactions. The Pt/MXene catalysts exhibit strong support-dependent dehydrogenation activity and stability. Notably, Pt/Ti3C2Tx shows the highest and most stable hydrogen evolution performance over the studied temperature range, while Pt/Nb2CTx deactivates due to carbon deposition at moderate to high temperatures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals that MXene supports effectively modulate the Pt0/Pt2+/Pt4+ distribution, indicating unique metal–support electronic interactions. Further analysis using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry identifies olefin intermediates generated in the reaction, showing that interfacial chemical differences among MXene supports influence the reactant adsorption configuration, initial dehydrogenation sites, and intermediate isomerization behavior. Overall, this study elucidates how MXene supports regulate Pt sites and MCH dehydrogenation pathways, providing valuable insights for the design of efficient LOHC catalysts.

Fe–N–C Support-Enhanced Pt Catalyst for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction

Xinquan Wu,Zhen Sun,Hao Li,Xiaolei Guo,Zhen-Feng Huang,Ruijie Gao,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Lun Pan,Ji-Jun Zou

Platinum-based catalysts are highly effective for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but their prohibitive cost and insufficient activity impede large-scale commercialization. Herein, we report a Pt@Fe-NC electrocatalyst synthesized by depositing uniform platinum nanoparticles onto an iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–NC) support via an ethylene glycol reduction method. The Fe–NC support, prepared from an iron (II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex precursor to ensure high iron utilization, modulates the electronic structure of the Pt nanoparticles, thereby enhancing both catalytic activity and stability. The optimized Pt@Fe-NC catalyst (13.54 wt% Pt) exhibits exceptional ORR performance in acidic media, with a half-wave potential of 0.852 V and notable stability. When integrated into a zinc-air battery, the catalyst delivered a high specific capacity of 652.66 mAh g Zn −1 . Furthermore, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) employing this catalyst achieved a high open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.964 V and a peak power density of 1.722 W cm −2 , outperforming most previously reported Pt-based catalysts. This study highlights a synergistic strategy between Pt nanoparticles and metal-nitrogen-carbon (M–N–C) supports to boost ORR performance, presenting a viable path toward advanced, cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion devices like PEMFCs and zinc-air batteries. Graphical A method of preparing Fe–NC loaded Pt nanoparticle catalysts is presented. The method is used to prepare Fe–NC substrate by loading iron complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline on carbon black and then Pt nanoparticles obtained by ethylene glycol reduction method are loaded on the Fe–NC substrate. The results show that the enhanced activity of the Pt@Fe-NC catalyst is due to the modification of the electronic structure of Fe on Pt in the Fe-NC support.

N-Acety-L-Cysteine-Stabilized Pt Nanozyme for Colorimetric Assay of Heparin

Li Xinxue,Huang Qingwei,Li Wei,Zhang Jinli,Fu Yan

Abstract N -Acety-L-cysteine (NAC), enriched with multiple electron-rich groups involving –SH, –C=O, and –COOH, exhibits strong affinities to transition metal ions. Herein, NAC was adopted as the stabilizing agent to synthesize a series of peroxidase-like Pt nanoclusters (NCs) with different physicochemical properties. Both the cluster size and the charge state of NAC–Pt NCs are highly dependent upon the molar ratio of [K 2 PtCl 4 ]/[NAC], contributing to different peroxidase mimicking activities. The most active Pt nanozyme (~ 1.7 nm), composed of 60% metallic Pt 0 and 40% positively charged Pt 2+ respectively, exhibits the K m of 0.132 mM for 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine and 35 mM for H 2 O 2 . Based on the heparin-activated enzymatic activity of NAC–Pt at pH 6.0, an ultrasensitive test was established for quantitative determination of heparin, giving the linear response of 0.5–20 μg/mL as well as the limit of detection of 2 × 10 −3  μg/mL. This proposed method is also applicable in biological fluid for practical applications. Such a colorimetric method possesses several advantages involving high sensitivity, short response, eco-friendly synthesis, low consumption of material and energy, free of expensive instrument, as well as simple operation. Semimetal-triggered covalent interaction in Pt-based intermetallics for fuel-cell electrocatalysis

Cheng Han,Gui Renjie,Chen Chen,Liu Si,Cao Xuemin,Yin Yifan,Ma Ruize,Wang Wenjie,Zhou Tianpei,Zheng Xusheng,Chu Wangsheng,Xie Yi,Wu Changzheng

Platinum-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs) play a vital role as electrocatalysts in a range of energy and environmental technologies, such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the synthesis of IMCs necessitates recombination of ordered Pt-M metallic bonds with high temperature driving, which is generally accompanied by side effects for catalysts’ structure and performance. In this work, we highlight that the semimetal atoms can trigger covalent interactions to break synthesis-temperature limitation of platinum-based intermetallic compounds and benefit for fuel-cell electrocatalysis. Attributed from partial fillings of p-block in semimetal elements, the strong covalent interaction of d-p π backbonding can benefit the recombination of ordered Pt-M metallic bonds (PtGe, PtSb and PtTe) in the synthesis process. Moreover, this covalent interaction in metallic states can further promote both electron transport and orbital fillings of active sites in fuel cells. The semimetal-Pt IMCs were obtained with a temperature 300 K lower than that needed for the synthesis of metal-Pt intermetallic compounds and reached the highest CO-tolerant oxygen reduction activity (0.794 A mg−1 at 0.9 V and 5.1% decay under CO poisoning) among reported electrocatalysts. We anticipate that semimetal-Pt IMCs will offer new insights for rational design of advanced electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Facile synthesis of PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires for oxygen reduction reaction

Shaohui Zhang,Hao Cui,Haikun Zhou,Xiyu Tan,Pengfei Tan,Jun Pan

Platinum-based alloy nanowires are often employed in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their exceptional performances. However, most platinum-based alloy nanowires suffer from poor stability in strong acidic electrolytes, as well as their complex preparation methods. Herein, PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires were successfully prepared by one-step hydrothermal with different concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and replacement reaction. The results show that the microstructure of nanowires gradually change with the increase of PVP concentration. Meanwhile, the outer layer of the PtMn nanowires contains a Pt-skin of about 1–2 nm. Moreover, the mass activity of the prepared PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires with 50 mg PVP is 0.409 A mg −1 (@0.9 V), which is 3.86 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. The as-prepared nanowires display excellent stability mainly due to the existence of Pt-skin. This paper provides a relatively simple method to synthesize Platinum-based core-shell nanowires with outstanding ORR performance.

Study of WO3/Pt hydrogen sensitive film fabricated by Sol-Gel method

Wei Shuangjiao,Bian Zhenglan,Wang Xingquan,Miao Xiaokang,Zhang Guilin,Xue Liang,Hu Anduo,Li Gaofang,Chu Fenghong

Pt-doped WO 3 materials have good hydrogen-sensing properties, which are widely used in the field of hydrogen sensing. In this paper, Sol-Gel method is used to prepare WO 3 /Pt sensing material and sensing characteristic to hydrogen is characterized by transmission optical fiber hydrogen sensing system fabricated at home. By optimizing the fabrication parameters including sol-gel viscosity, aging time, Pt:W moral ratio and layers of the sensing film, the sensitivity and repeatability of the film were greatly improved. The repeatability of the film is further improved by irradiating the film with an UV lamp. Experimental results show that by increasing the number of film layers from one to five (the thickness of the film is about 222 nm, and the content of Pt element is 13.47% by SEM test), the sensitivity increased by 1.666 times. The repeatability of the film can be improved by 3% through the irradiation of the ultraviolet lamp. The optimized WO 3 /Pt film was tested continuously for 12 times at 5% hydrogen concentration, and the zero drift was only 0.723%.

Pt-decorated NiWO4/WO3 heterostructure nanotubes for highly selective sensing of acetone

Yong-ping CUI,Ya-ru SHANG,Rui-xia SHI,Quan-de CHE,Jun-peng WANG

The heterostructured NiWO 4 /WO 3 nanotubes (Ni/W NTs) were synthesized by using a facile self-assembly method on the sacrificial polystyrene (PS) nanofibers templates. Then, the Pt-decorated NiWO 4 /WO 3 (Pt@Ni/W) composite NTs were obtained through using an ultrasonic mixing method. The experimental results display that the order of gas-sensing performance is Pt@Ni/W>Ni/W>WO 3 . The 2wt.%Pt@Ni/W-5 NTs indicate the supreme acetone-sensing response ( R air / R gas =58.4 at 100×10 −6 ) at 375 °C, which is 10.6 and 1.53 times that of the WO 3 and NiWO 4 /WO 3 NTs, respectively. Additionally, the 2wt.%Pt@Ni/W-5 NTs also exhibit the dramatically high selectivity toward acetone against ethanol, methanal, methanol, NH 3 and toluene. The Pt-decorated Ni/W NTs show the excellent responsivity and stability toward acetone, which is ascribed to the construction of heterostructured NiWO 4 /WO 3 and the spill-over effect of Pt nanoparticles.

Aging and activation of room temperature hydrogen sensitive Pt–SnO2 composite nanoceramics

Huang Yong,Chen Feng,Meng Lingyao,Hu Yongming,Chen Wanping

Room temperature gas-sensitive metal oxides have received growing concern over their long-term stability in recent years. Presently, Pt-SnO 2 composite nanoceramics of 1 wt% Pt have been prepared, and the time dependence of their room temperature hydrogen sensing capability has been carefully studied. A strong variation with time was observed, with the room temperature response to 1% H 2− 20% O 2 –N2 decreased by a factor of several dozen after only one week. Heat treatments were found highly effective to activate those aged samples. Their room temperature hydrogen sensing capability was almost completely restored through 10 min heat treatments at temperatures as low as 130 °C. It is proposed that impurity gases in air slowly deposit on Pt in Pt–SnO 2 composite nanoceramics, and the catalytic role of Pt is deactivated by the deposition and then activated after their desorption through heat treatments. These results suggest that periodic mild heat treatments can be a simple and feasible way for some room temperature gas-sensitive metal oxides to maintain a high long-term stability.
