Ru-based catalysts, supported on activated carbon and carbon nanotubes, were synthesized by a simple and eco-friendly bioreduction method and tested in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. Over 2.0% Ru/AC, succinic anhydride was produced with a maximum yield of 99.2% without further hydrogenation to γ-butyrolactone. Well-defined spherical shapes with uniform small size of Ru nanoparticles and the residual plant biomass were responsible for the excellent catalytic activities and stabilities.

Commercial Pt/C was modified with Ru (IV) species via the hydrolysis of Ruthenium (III) nitrosyl nitrate under a hydrothermal condition. It was revealed that the Pt nanoparticles were surrounded by Ru (IV) species and the presence of Ru (IV) species modified the electronic structure, which lowed the binding energy of Pt atoms. The results from the methanol electrooxidation suggested that the current intensity was increased and at the same time, the onset potential was decreased largely in the presence of Ru(IV) species modified Pt/C, which demonstrated the fact that the Ru (IV) species could activate the water molecules to provide the OH* to remove the CO ads at low potential.

The ionic materials consisting of cationic Ru complexes and Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate anion (POM, K 6 P 2 W 18 O 62 ) have been constructed via a non-covalent interaction. The as-synthesized catalysts have been characterized thoroughly by NMR, XRD, FESEM, and FT-IR, etc. The characterization suggested that a hydrogen bond interaction occurred between the proton of the amine ligand in the cationic Ru complexes and the oxygen atom of the POM anion. The hydrogen bond played an important role in enhancing catalytic activity for the transfer hydrogenation of methyl levulinate (ML) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) under very mild conditions. Especially, the transfer hydrogenation reaction proceeded via a heterogeneous catalysis approach and the heterogenized catalysts even afforded much better catalytic performance than homogeneous analogs. Notably, the catalysts can be recycled without an obvious loss of activity, and further extended to highly selective transfer hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated ketones and aldehydes, etc. into the corresponding α,β-unsaturated alcohols without any base external additives. The high catalytic performance of these anchored catalysts was highly related to the hydrogen bond interaction and the basicity of the polyanion. The obtained knowledge from this work could lead us to a new catalysis concept of tethering active homogeneous complexes for constructing highly active anchored Ru complex catalysts for hydrogenation reaction.

Developing bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and long term durability remains challenging for overall water splitting, mainly due to sluggish reaction kinetics and structural instability under high current densities. Herein, an oxygen vacancy rich RuCoFe-LDH electrocatalyst with low Ru content was successfully fabricated on nickel foam through a one step hydrothermal method. TMAOH inhibition, pH dependent analyses, and isotope labeling DEMS measurements collectively reveal that the synergistic coupling between Ru doping and oxygen vacancies promotes lattice oxygen participation and activates the LOM pathway during OER. Benefiting from the optimized electronic structure, RuCoFe-LDH/NF requires overpotentials of only 212 and 131 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively, with corresponding Tafel slopes of 30.7 and 61.7 mV dec −1 . Moreover, the RuCoFe-LDH based electrolyzer achieves 100 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of only 1.75 V and maintains stable operation for 1000 h during both OER and HER, and the corresponding full electrolyzer also operates stably for 1000 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This work provides an effective strategy for designing high performance LDH based bifunctional electrocatalysts through low content Ru incorporation and oxygen vacancy engineering.

Developing high-efficiency and stable catalysts for NaBH 4 hydrolysis is critical for safe, high-density and on-demand hydrogen generation. Herein, a core-shell structured Co@SiO 2 @C composite was fabricated as support to immobilize Ru nanoparticles, which precisely regulates electron-metal-support interactions (EMSI). The SiO 2 layer inhibits Ru aggregation and carbon layer accelerates electron transfer, synergistically optimizing Ru electron density and boosting Co–Ru dual active sites. The composite catalyst Co@SiO 2 @C–Ru exhibits significantly enhanced catalytic performance, achieving a hydrogen production rate of 7783.2 mL min −1 g −1 at 25 °C, substantially surpassing most previously reported catalysts. Furthermore, the catalyst retains excellent catalytic activity after five cycles, demonstrating favorable structural and performance stability. Mechanism studies confirm that EMSI drives electron transfer from Co to Ru, optimizing BH 4 – adsorption and activation via Michaelis–Menten kinetics. This work offers a facile strategy for constructing high-performance dual-metal core-shell hydrolysis catalysts.

To address the challenges of weak NO3−adsorption, insufficient active hydrogen supply, and facile desorption of NO2−intermediates in neutral electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR), this study employs laser nano-welding technology to fabricate a Ru/WO3heterojunction, and constructs a Ru/WO3/Cu(OH)2/FC spatially confined electrode using Cu(OH)2nanorod arrays as the support. Laser welding achieves metallurgical-grade bonding between Ru and WO3while retaining oxygen vacancies in WO3. Cu(OH)2promotes NO3−adsorption via electrostatic and Lewis acid interactions, and its nanorod array structure confines NO2−intermediates. In 0.5 M K2SO4+ 50 mM KNO3electrolyte, the electrode delivers an ammonia yield rate of 16.1 mg h−1cm−2and a Faradaic efficiency of 75.8% at −0.8 V vs. RHE, outperforming control groups. Potential-dependent electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirms that spatial confinement suppresses NO2−accumulation and optimizes interfacial charge transfer kinetics, providing a new strategy for electrode design in neutral NO3RR.

Proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysers require active and stable anodic oxygen evolution catalysts. RuO 2 offers high intrinsic activity but dissolves rapidly in acid. Here, high-valence molybdenum is introduced into rutile RuO 2 to regulate the local Ru-O chemical and electronic environment. The sample labels Mo-x-RuO 2 refer to nominal Mo/(Mo + Ru) precursor ratios. XRD, EDS, XPS and DFT analyses support Mo incorporation within the rutile framework and reveal an altered local Ru/O chemical environment, providing insights into the electronic regulation induced by Mo incorporation. Mo-17-RuO 2 requires 207 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 56.2 mV dec −1 . After 75 h of acidic half-cell operation, it shows 6.64% cumulative Ru dissolution based on the nominal initial Ru loading. The commercial RuO 2 reference exhibited 27.95% cumulative Ru dissolution after approximately 17 h of operation. For the selected computational models, the AEM- and LOM-like pathways exhibit comparable thermodynamic limiting steps, with theoretical overpotentials of 275 and 262 mV, respectively, suggesting that Mo incorporation modulates oxygen reaction energetics without exclusively favoring a single pathway. These findings provide insight into composition-dependent Mo engineering for improving the performance and Ru retention of acidic OER catalysts.

The high-yield synthesis of uniform Cu/Ru nanostructures is crucial for catalyzing nitrate (NO3–) reduction to ammonia (NH3), yet it remains highly challenging. Herein, we report a facile strategy for synthesizing Cu/Ru bimetallic nanocages in high yield, driven by the Kirkendall effect. This process induces nonequilibrium atomic interdiffusion at the Cu/Ru interface, generating a net outward flux of Cu atoms and a counter-flux of vacancies, which collectively lead to the formation of a uniform nanocage structure. Importantly, the Cu87Ru13 nanocages exhibit superior performance in the electrochemical NO3– reduction reaction (NO3–RR), achieving a maximal Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 91% and an NH3 production rate of 3353 mmol h–1 g–1 at −0.3 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). In situ characterization reveals that within Cu/Ru nanocages, Cu sites adsorb NO3– and reduce it to *NO2, while Ru sites reduce adsorbed *H, which protonates reaction intermediates to facilitate the conversion of NO3– to NH3.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis offers a promising route for plastic waste upcycling. Herein, we demonstrate that oxygen vacancies (O V ) in CeO 2 supports dramatically enhanced this process. Reduction-engineered Ru/CeO 2 -NH 3 -800 exhibits 40% higher activity at 800 °C than untreated counterparts. Comprehensive characterization revealed unchanged Ru metal sites after treatment, but significantly increased oxygen vacancy content in the CeO 2 support. Isotopic C 6 –D 2 temperature-programmed surface reaction studies revealed that higher O V concentrations correlate with lower C–H bond activation temperatures, directly aligning with observed activity trends. We propose a novel Ru–Ce interfacial mechanism: O V -adjacent Ce 3+ –O sites activate C–H bonds to form *RCCR* intermediates, while dual Ru sites cleave C–C bonds via C–Ru coordination. This work establishes an O V -driven structure-activity relationship for the first time and reveals support-mediated C–H activation as crucial for advanced catalyst design.

Proposing an in-plane N-bridged structure for atomic-level robust coordination. • Strong orbital overlap redirects hydroxy adsorption from Ni/Fe sites to Ru atoms. • Optimized coordination alleviates scaling relations and suppresses Ni site oxidation. • AEMWE achieves 2 A cm 2 at 1.84 V with ultra-stable operation over 800 h. The pursuit of high-performance anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) catalysts is limited by conventional supported and lattice-doped materials, which suffer from weak interfacial coupling and suboptimal intermediate adsorption, leading to degradation under industrial conditions. Although atomic-level modulation is highly appealing, achieving a synergistic balance between robust structural stability and precise control over the reaction pathway remains challenging. Herein, by employing a nitrogen-coordinated metal bridging strategy, we report a Ru-NiFeN with atomically coordinated Ru-N bridges for practical water electrolysis. This configuration manipulates the local electronic microenvironment to trigger a site-specific redirection of OH adsorption from Fe to Ru centers, effectively bypassing host-lattice scaling-relation limitations and lowering OER barriers. In-situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that the Ru-N bridge promotes resilient dynamic structural reconstruction, enabling potential-triggered NiOOH formation while suppressing detrimental metal oxidation. The Ru-NiFeN catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 340 mV at 1 A cm 2 and demonstrates outstanding AEMWE durability, operating for over 800 h at 2 A cm 2 with a decay rate of only 24.4 μV h 1 , positioning it among the most active catalysts reported. This work provides a strategic pathway for optimizing adsorption landscapes via atomic coordination engineering for efficient, stable energy conversion. Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was assembled by hydrothermal and impregnation reduction process. • The introduction of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene accelerates the hydrolysis rate of ammonia borane. • Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene exhibits a high TOF value of 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 . • Dual active sites of Ru and N-Mo 2 C MXene promotes the hydrogen production for NH 3 BH 3 . Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) is an ideal hydrogen storage medium, but its intrinsic physicochemical properties require efficient catalysts for rapid hydrolytic dehydrogenation at room temperature. Herein, the Ru nanoparticles anchored nitrogen-doped Mo 2 C MXene (Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene) catalyst was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with an impregnation-reduction strategy, using urea as the nitrogen source. When the mass ratio of Mo 2 C MXene to urea was 1:6, the Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene catalyst exhibited optimal performance. At 298 K, the turnover frequency value of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene was 1092 mol H2 ∙mol Ru −1 ∙min −1 , with an activation energy of 51.74 kJ∙mol −1 , and the catalytic activity remained 86.2% after five cycles. Mechanism analysis indicates that the superior hydrogen production performance of AB is attributed to both the generation of 1.59 nm Ru nanoparticles and the modulated local electronic structure induced by N doping originating from Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene. These features facilitate the generation of dual active sites (electron-rich Ru and electron-deficient N-Mo 2 C MXene), which efficiently promote the cleavage of B H in AB and O H in H 2 O, thereby significantly boosting the catalytic activity of Ru/N-Mo 2 C MXene for AB hydrogen production. This work establishes a feasible strategy for designing high-efficiency catalysts for ammonia borane hydrolysis.

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction using H2O as the sole electron and proton source represents the ultimate challenge in artificial photosynthesis, yet it is severely hindered by the sluggish kinetics of CO2 adsorption and activation processes. Herein, we report a rationally designed photocatalyst comprising Ru-decorated In2O3 nanorods enriched with surface hydroxyl groups and oxygen vacancies (In2O3−x(OH)y), which drives the conversion of CO2 and H2O into CO and CH4 without sacrificial agents. Atomic-level structural design creates surface frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) through the synergy between coordinately unsaturated In sites (Lewis acids) and adjacent In−OH groups (Lewis bases). These FLP sites drastically enhance CO2 adsorption and facilitate its polarization and activation. Meanwhile, Ru nanoparticles not only facilitate electron extraction from the In2O3−x(OH)y nanorods but also function as “nanoheaters” that rapidly raise the local temperature to accelerate water vaporization. The synergistic cooperation between FLPs and Ru cocatalysts fosters balanced and efficient redox kinetics. Consequently, the optimized photocatalyst achieves markedly enhanced CO and CH4 production rates that are 40 and 31 times higher than those of pristine In2O3, respectively, while achieving stoichiometric O2 evolution. This work underscores the pivotal role of surface FLPs and provides a fundamental principle for constructing efficient sacrificial-agent-free photocatalytic systems.
