Despite the high capacity of metal selenides (MSes) anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), they still face significant challenges, including rapid capacity degradation and slow reaction kinetics. Herein, a novel structure of Bi2Se3 nanospheres uniformly embedded in a nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber matrix (denoted as Bi2Se3−x@CNFs) was constructed through a facile fabrication approach involving electrospinning, followed by one-step selenization, demonstrating exceptional performance as an SIB anode. The extremely high mechanical strength and consecutive fibrous structure of carbon fibers effectively alleviate the agglomeration and volume expansion of Bi2Se3 particles and ultimately improve stability and service life. Furthermore, the engineered selenium vacancy distribution in both Bi2Se3 nanospheres and carbon fiber substrates produces synergistic effects, significantly improves bulk electronic conductivity, and expedites redox reaction kinetics. As expected, the Bi2Se3−x@CNFs-600 electrode demonstrates high capacity and exceptional durability (327.8 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 3.0 A g−1 and 284.0 mAh g−1 over 3000 cycles at 5.0 A g−1). It is noteworthy that the assembled Bi2Se3−x@CNFs//Na3V2(PO4)3 full cells demonstrate good rate capability and stability, rendering them a viable option for SIBs.

Crystallization growth plays a crucial role in influencing the film quality and final photoelectric conversion performance of a kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) solar cell. Herein, an exploration of a two-step selenization strategy to control the growth kinetics of an aqueous solution derived CZTSSe film for high solar cell efficiency is reported. By synergistically exploiting the benefits of high and low temperature selenization in facilitating the CZTSSe phase formation, introducing beneficial point defect states, configuring the interfacial energy band structure, and sustaining excellent surface microstructure, a total-area cell efficiency of 12.5% has been achieved. These results demonstrate the significance of controlling the crystallization growth of CZTSSe to improve the device performance. The high cell performance achieved here is comparable to that of hydrazine or dimethyl sulfoxide solution-based cells and thus would help facilitate the development of CZTSSe solar cells toward more diversified film fabrication technologies.

Developing earth-abundant highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is indispensable for the widespread implementation of electrochemical water splitting to store renewable energy. Herein, amorphous bimetallic selenide (Ni–Fe–Se) hollow nanospheres electrodeposited on nickel foam (Ni–Fe–Se/NF) are developed as a bifunctional catalyst for the HER and OER. The HER and OER bifunctional activity of Ni–Fe–Se/NF outperforms those of monometallic Ni–Se/NF and Fe–Se/NF owing to the synergy of Ni and Fe in Ni–Fe–Se/NF. Moreover, the amorphous hollow spherical morphology of Ni–Fe–Se/NF increases the active site density and facilitates the mass transfer of electrolytes and H2/O2 products. Ni–Fe–Se/NF drives a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with an overpotential of ∼85 mV for the HER and 100 mA cm−2 with an overpotential of ∼222 mV for the OER. As the HER and OER bifunctional catalyst, Ni–Fe–Se/NF can split alkaline water with total voltages of ∼1.52 V and ∼1.66 V at 10 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively, and remain stable over 50 hours of operation in 1 M KOH.

Exploiting the theoretical capacity of transition-metal selenide (TMSe) electrodes with improving stability is a challenge in hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs). An in-situ strategy of multidirectional recombination of reasonable/stable hierarchical structure and multiphase synergy is proposed to boost TMSe electrodes to a higher level. Herein, trimetallic layered double hydroxides (CoNiMn-LDH) are in-situ reconstructed with hollow CNFs (carbon–nitrogen frameworks), which can expose numerous active sites and facilitates rapid charge transport. After systematic selenization (time gradient), the valence-rich multiphase (Co, Ni, Mn)-Se@CNFs is regulated and the hierarchical structure is further optimized with reduction of layer spacing for rapid charge transfer and OH – adsorption. The multiphase coordinated electrode demonstrates a high capacity (334.7 mAh g −1 , 1 A g −1 , 6 M KOH) and superior rate capability (277.8 mAh g −1 , 10 A g −1 , 83.0%). Besides, the assembled HSC demonstrates a quite high energy density ((Co, Ni, Mn)-Se@CNFs//Activated carbon, 91.6 Wh kg −1 at 800 W kg −1 ). The ultra-high cycle retention rate (without attenuation, 16,000 cycles) illustrates the excellent stability, which is superior to the HSCs we know that use TMSes. The in-situ strategy with systematic research on structure/phase regulation provides effective ideas for the preparation and application of high-capacity electrodes and high-efficiency HSCs.

The mining, processing, and refining of rare-earth ores generate Th-rich radioactive wastewater, making its effective treatment critical for environmental protection and public health. In this study, mesoporous MoX 2 -α-ZrP (X = S, Se) composite powders were synthesized for Th(IV) adsorption from aqueous solutions. Under the conditions of [Th(IV)] initial = 50 ± 2 mg·L −1 , pH initial = 3, temperature = 298 K, and a contact time = 1440 min, the larger pore volume and pore width of the composites, compared with α-ZrP, enhanced the adsorption capacity ( q e ) of MoSe 2 -α-ZrP and MoS 2 -α-ZrP to 146.3 ± 7.4 mg·g −1 and 143.7 ± 2.5 mg·g −1 , respectively. Higher pH, [Th(IV)] initial, and temperature further enhanced Th(IV) adsorption. Notably, MoX 2 -α-ZrP removed Th(IV) from simulated leaching solution of monazite or bastnaesite and selectively adsorbed Th(IV) in the presence of co-existing ions. Thermodynamic and kinetic analyses confirmed a spontaneous, endothermic, and homogeneous chemisorption behavior. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models accurately described dynamic column Th(IV) adsorption, and increases in adsorbent mass, together with decreases in influent Th(IV) concentration, and reduced flow rate extended both breakthrough and saturation times. Mechanistic studies revealed Th(IV) coordination with oxygen-containing groups, ion exchange with -OH, and electrostatic interaction with phosphate groups. Results from our study can help explore the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms of Th(IV) on potential MoX 2 (X = O, S, Se)-based or α-ZrP-based materials for treating Th-rich radioactive wastewater.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries face low sulfur utilization and limited rate capability. Although electrolyte engineering is a key strategy for improving the conversion kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPS), achieving a balance between high energy density and high power density remains challenging. This study combines an ultra-low concentration electrolyte with a dual-functional hybrid organic selenium/organic tellurium additive (DPDSe/DPDTe). The system exhibits higher ionic conductivity and enhanced LiPS conversion kinetics. This is attributed to the high solubility of LiPS at low concentrations, which enhances the accessibility of active materials. By adjusting the mixing ratio of DPDSe/DPDTe, the formed DPDSe-Te exhibits unique solvation structure regulation and synergistic catalytic effects. This Li–S battery delivers an initial specific capacity of 1103 mAh g −1 (65.9% sulfur utilization) at 0.5 C and retains 89.3% of its capacity after 100 cycles. Even at 2 C, a capacity of 783 mAh g −1 is achieved. The pouch cell exhibits a high energy density of 340 Wh kg −1 at 0.5 C with stable cycling. This low-concentration, dual-functional additive strategy synergistically addresses LiPS solubility limitations and kinetic bottlenecks, offering an effective route toward Li–S batteries with both high energy density and high-power density.

The efficient synergy of Zn‑metal/Se‑vacancy dual active sites facilitates surface catalytic reactions. • The localized surface plasmon resonance effect of CuCo 2 O 4 broadens the spectral absorption range to near-infrared light. • The formation of S-Scheme heterojunction and its mechanism of photogenerated electron migration have been deeply studied. The synergistic effect of metal-vacancy dual active sites plays a pivotal role in surface catalytic reactions, yet its underlying microscopic mechanism remains poorly understood. Herein, a Zn-ZnSe photocatalyst containing Se vacancies is prepared through solvothermal synthesis followed by thermal reduction methods. The resulting Zn-ZnSe photocatalyst with Se vacancy (V Se ) is then coupled with the plasmonic catalyst CuCo 2 O 4 to construct a CuCo 2 O 4 /Zn-ZnSe S-scheme heterojunction. Owing to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, the as-prepared CuCo 2 O 4 /Zn-ZnSe exhibits intense near-infrared light response. Experimental characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that the synergistic effect of Zn metal and Se vacancies (Zn-V Se ) promotes surface photocatalytic reactions. Specifically, H 2 O activation (*H 2 O → *OH*H) occurs primarily at Se vacancy sites, whereas Zn metal facilitates H 2 formation and desorption (*H → * + 1/2H 2 ). This work elucidates the synergistic catalysis of Zn-V Se dual active sites, and provides a strategy for converting full-spectrum solar energy into hydrogen. Simultaneous integration of electrical bipolarity and bidirectional photoresponse enables enhanced dynamic scene perception, recognition, and interaction within a single device, represents a formidable yet actively pursued challenge, motivated by applications in intelligent autonomous driving, augmented reality, and related advanced technologies. Here, we report a site-selective O-Se substitution strategy, yielding, for the first time, enables electrically and optically bipolar charge transport in a single-crystalline Bi 2 O 2 Se 2D semiconductor. Their-based filed-effect transistors (FETs) show balanced ambipolar (P/N-type) carrier transport with a record-level of I ON / I OFF ratio over 6000, and broadband positive and negative photoconductivity (PPC/NPC) from 300 to 1400 nm selectively activated under opposite polarity bias conditions. This dual-bidirectional optoelectronic performance is attributable to a wavelength-dependent oxygen adsorption–desorption process that dynamically modulates the electronic band structure and charge transport characteristics. Moreover, we successfully demonstrate its integrated applications in high-dimensional secure optical communication, round-the-clock motion detection and recognition (MDR), and context-aware interaction to dynamic events. The result demonstrates seamless integration of multi-wavelength spectral sensing, in-sensor computing, and hardware-rooted secure communication within such Bi 2 O 2 Se devices, establishing a foundation for next-generation optoelectronic technologies.

In this work, non-uniform Ag and In co-doped CZTSSe (NoU-Ag x In y , x = Ag/(Ag + Cu) = 0–15 %, y = In/(In + Zn + Sn) = 0–12 %) was prepared by doping Ag at the front surface of CZTSSe and doping In at the back surface of CZTSSe. CZTSSe solar cell with conventional structure but without anti-reflection layer was fabricated by using the NoU-Ag x In y as absorber (Cell-NoU-Ag x In y ). Through optimizing the Ag and In doping concentration, the highest PCE of 11.82 % was achieved in the cell-NoU-Ag x In y with x = 10 % and y = 8 %. It is higher than the highest PCE (9.05 %) of CZTSSe solar cells obtained in this work and the highest PCE (9.45 %) of uniform Ag and In co doped CZTSSe solar cells with similar doping concentrations of Ag and In. Compared to CZTSSe solar cell, the increased PCE of cell-NoU-AgIn is dominantly due to decreased J 0 , followed by increase in J L . The decrease in J 0 is mainly attributed to reduce in number of [2Cu Zn + Sn Zn ] defect clusters and of ZnSe at front interface induced by Ag doping, as well as formation of passivation field at back interface induced by In doping. The increase in J L is mainly due to increase in depletion region width induced by the Ag doping and formation of the passivation field. This study demonstrates that non-uniform Ag and In doped CZTSSe is favorable to increasing PCE of CZTSSe solar cells.

Conversion-type selenium cathodes are considered a highly promising alternative to sulfur cathodes due to their high conductivity and similar theoretical capacity. However, stress-diffusion and shuttle effects during the conversion process remain significant challenges that urgently need to be addressed. Herein, a composite matrix of MoSe 2 anchored on the surface of N -doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (NHMCNS) was designed as a Se host to construct Se/C cathodes (Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS). Anchored MoSe 2 successfully mitigated selenium loss by enhancing the chemisorption of polyselenides within the matrix. Meanwhile, polyselenides adsorbed on the Se/C cathode surface exhibit lower diffusion barriers and more negative Gibbs free energy during the conversion from chain polyselenides to Na 2 Se. MoSe 2 accelerated the catalytic conversion of polyselenides to the final discharge products from both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives. The huge stress induced by structural transformation during the conversion process is mitigated by MoSe 2 synergistic carbon walls, which effectively maintain the structural stability of the cathode. Based on this three-in-one strategy, the sodium-selenium battery assembled with Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS exhibits stable cycling performance (400.6 mAh g −1 at 2C after 500 cycles), and the pouch battery also demonstrates good practical performance.

The band alignment of Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe)/CdS(In) in novel CZTSSe solar cells without a ZnO window layer has been initially investigated in our previous studies. However, the In content of CdS(In) diffused into the absorber is low, and the ability to regulate the band arrangement is limited. In this work, we employ In-ion-doped absorbers to adjust defects. However, this approach leads to a significant loss in short-circuit current density (Jsc). To address this, Cd is introduced to enhance Jsc through grain growth promotion and morphological improvement, thereby offsetting the Jsc loss induced by In doping. The co-doping of In and Cd reduces the conduction band offset (CBO) from 0.28 eV to 0.21 eV, thereby inhibiting carrier recombination and enhancing transport efficiency. Additionally, the concentration of bulk defects is reduced by an order of magnitude. As a result, the fill factor (FF) increased from 56.97 % to 60.08 %, Jsc increased from 37.10 mA/cm 2 to 38.66 mA/cm 2 , and open-circuit voltage (Voc) increased from 431.64 mV to 440.48 mV. Finally, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of CZTSSe solar cell is enhanced to 10.23 %.

MXene, a class of 2D materials of metal carbide or nitride, has attracted a lot of attention recently due to its excellent optical and electrical properties. In this work, titanium-carbide MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) is introduced as a back electrode in Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 thin-film solar cells (FTO/CdS/Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 /MXene) for the first time, which displaces traditional carbon (C) and gold (Au) electrodes entirely. Impressively, thanks to its high conductivity, mild reflectivity, and flexible flake architecture, the MXene-based device performance outperforms typical C and Au electrodes by 153% and 77%, respectively. Specifically, the tunable work function of MXene and a beneficial Sb–O bond formed between Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 and MXene efficiently suppress the recombination and enhance charge transport by enjoying the unique merit of the rich terminal groups of MXene. As a result, the best efficiency of 8.29% of MXene-based Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 solar device is achieved, which represents the highest performance of noble metal and/or hole transport layer-free derived Sb 2 (S,Se) 3 solar cells to date. This result has revealed that MXene is a feasible material to substitute the back electrode in Sb-based solar cells to reach high efficiency, low cost, and high stability.
