Enhanced treatment of acute organophosphorus pesticide poisoning using activated charcoal-embedded sodium alginate-polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel

Yan Li,Peng Ying

BACKGROUND:The adsorption of activated charcoal is currently a major clinical treatment for acute organophosphorus pesticide poisoning (AOPP). However, the adsorption duration and efficiency of this method is unstable. OBJECTIVE:In this study, a hydrogel embedding activated charcoal was prepared and its alleviating effects on AOPP were investigated. METHODS:A composite hydrogel using sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (SA-PVA) hydrogel was prepared in this study. The structural properties of the SA-PVA hydrogel were characterized via multiple analysis including FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, tensile strength and expansion rate. Based on these, activated charcoal (AC) was embedded within the SA-PVA hydrogel (SA-PVA-AC) and it was used for the treatment of AOPP. RESULTS:Structural characterization indicated SA-PVA hydrogel possesses excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The in vivo study demonstrated that SA-PVA-AC significantly alleviated the inflammation and oxidative damage in the liver, as evidenced by reduced levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and, IL-1β, SOD, and MDA. Furthermore, SA-PVA-AC treatment effectively re-regulated the activities of serum AST and ALT, exhibiting an improved effect on liver function. CONCLUSION:The findings suggest that activated charcoal embedded within SA-PVA hydrogel has significant potential as a therapeutic agent in treating AOPP, and offering a novel approach to managing pesticide-induced toxicity.

Enhanced water purification through the double regulation of GO/MXene membranes with sodium alginate and KOH

Wenshuai Jiang,Yaning Wang,Yiheng Liu,Qianfang Jia,Caojie Zhao,Jin Yang,Wu Ren,Qingjun Liu

Graphene oxide (GO) and MXene-based membranes have been widely used in the field of water purification due to their excellent separation properties. However, the poor stabilities of these species in water and the ‘trade-off’ effect between permeability and retention greatly limit their practical applications. In this study, modified GO/MXene composite membranes were prepared via double regulation with sodium alginate (SA) and KOH. During the modulation process, SA formed more hydrogen bonds with GO/MXene nanosheets. Meanwhile, SA acts as a “mortar” during the assembly of GO/MXene nanosheets, avoiding their aggregation and disordered stacking. During the subsequent regulation in the KOH solution, K+ not only enlarged the interlayer spacing of the composite membrane, but also interacted with the oxidation groups on the GO (cation-π) to play a fixed role in fixing the interlayer spacing of the composite membrane to reduce the swelling of the composite membrane. Furthermore, the number of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces of the GO/MXene composite membranes was significantly reduced under alkaline conditions, which further enhanced the selectivity of the composite membranes to the selectivity of the composite membrane to the dye molecules. Due to the synergistic effect generated by the dual regulation of SA and KOH, the K+/GO/MXene composite membranes exhibited excellent water treatment performance, in terms of their permeability and dye retention, as well as high physical stability. By optimizing the content of SA and the ratio of GO/MXene, the composite membrane with the optimal separation performance was successfully synthesized. Compared with ordinary GO/MXene composite membranes, the water flux of the K+/GO/MXene-SA composite membrane was enhanced from 48 to 88.07 Lm −2  h −1  bar −1 .The K+/GO/MXene-SA composite membrane has excellent MB dye separation performance, with a removal rate of more than 97.75 %. In addition, the K+/GO/MXene-SA composite membrane demonstrated an excellent structural stability in acidic and alkaline solutions. The filtered composite membrane still maintains excellent stability and has good recyclability after desorption. These results therefore provide new insights into the design of two-dimensional membrane separation materials for use in the purification of dye effluents.

Formation of pH-responsive hydrogel beads and their gel properties: Soybean protein nanofibers and sodium alginate

Yuxin Wang,Xiaoyu Yang,Liang Li

Hydrogel beads prepared from protein nanofibers are popular because of their safety, sleek appearance, and protection of biologically active substances. However, extreme external environmental variations, such as pH and temperature, can limit their practical application. To meet the application requirements of hydrogel beads in different environments, non-covalent mixtures of CaCl 2 cross-linked soybean protein nanofibers (SNF) and sodium alginate (SA) were used to prepare hydrogel beads. In the present study, the hardness (782.48 g) and elasticity of hydrogel beads formed at SNF/SA = 7:3 and CaCl 2 concentration of 0.1 mol/L were the maximum. Furthermore, the water content and pH swelling also reached a peak (98.68 %, 43.85 g/g) due to the best morphology and regular internal network structure. Meanwhile, the pH-responsive hydrogel beads with added anthocyanins were able to respond to the ambient pH under different temperatures and pH conditions and maintained color stability during 96 h of storage (ΔE < 5). In this experiment, a pH-responsive hydrogel bead based on soybean protein nanofiber (SNF) and sodium alginate (SA) was prepared by simple ionic crosslinking. It provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the future application of plant protein nanofibers as pH-responsive hydrogel materials.

Highly compressible lamellar graphene/cellulose/sodium alginate aerogel via bidirectional freeze-drying for flexible pressure sensor

Jinze Wang,Zhaoji Dong,Jiatian Li,Jiarui Lu,Sicong Tan,Qian Feng,Zhaoyang Xu

Graphene exhibits exceptional electrical properties, and aerogels made from it demonstrate high sensitivity when used in sensors. However, traditional graphene aerogels have poor biocompatibility and sustainability, posing potential environmental and health risks. Moreover, the stacking of their internal structures results in low compressive strength and fatigue resistance, which limits their further applications. In this study, green and sustainable cellulose nanofibers/sodium alginate/reduced graphene oxide aerogels (BCSRA) were synthesized, featuring a well-defined lamellar structure and a fiber cross-linked network, employing techniques such as bidirectional freeze-drying, ionic cross-linking, and thermal annealing. The unique internal architecture of BCSRA results in a compressive strength of up to 64.55 kPa at 70 % compression deformation and an extremely low density of merely 7.21 mg/cm 3 . Furthermore, BCSRA displays outstanding fatigue resistance, maintaining 82.17 % of its stress after 100 compression cycles at 70 % compressive strain and 86.99 % after 1000 cycles at 50 % compressive strain. Remarkably, when utilized as a flexible pressure sensor, BCSRA achieves a sensitivity of 5.71 kPa −1 and endures over 2200 cycles at 40 % compression, all while ensuring consistent electrical signal output. These properties underscore its significant potential for application in wearable flexible pressure sensors, capable of detecting various human movements.

Facile synthesis of rapid hemostatic powder based on sodium alginate for promoting hemostasis and wound healing

Aihong Chen,Lixue Wu,Kaiyang Wang,Long Qin,Kexin Zhang,Song Chen,Yijiong Zhang,Wei Song,Qian Zhang,Wei Xia,Yu Luo,Xijian Liu,Jian Wan

Uncontrollable bleeding and excessive blood loss are the primary causes of death on the battlefield and in accidents. However, commercial hemostatic materials possess individual drawbacks for hemostasis. Here, we present a rapid hemostatic powder (SACC-GO) with high biosafety, which is fabricated by a facile ball milling method using inexpensive raw materials (sodium alginate (SA), calcium chloride, cerium nitrate and graphene oxide (GO)). The SACC-GO could immediately become gel when meeting blood, whose strength was enhanced due to specific surface area of GO and high coordination capacity of Ce 3+ ions. In addition, the SACC-GO had a high water absorption rate (~2000 %) allow it to concentrate blood and release Ca 2+ ions to improve blood coagulation. The in vitro and in vivo results, such as hemostasis in tail amputation, femoral hemostasis and hepatic hemostasis, exhibited excellent hemostasis effects by reducing hemostasis time and blood loss (with the majority of reductions exceeding 50 %). The SACC-GO also enhanced wound healing due to Ce ions scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thus, the SACC-GO hemostatic powder had great potential for rapid hemostasis.

Mechanistic investigation of Pb2+ adsorption on biochar modified with sodium alginate composite zeolitic imidazolate framework-8

Peng Jun,Xiao Qian,Wang Ziwei,Zhou Fang,Yu Junxia,Chi Ruan,Xiao Chunqiao

For the serious situation of heavy metal pollution, the use of cheap, clean, and efficient biochar to immobilize heavy metals is a good treatment method. In this paper, SA@ZIF-8/BC was prepared for the adsorption of Pb 2+ in solution using sodium alginate (SA) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) modified corn cob biochar. The results showed that the specific surface area of modified biochar was greatly improved, with good adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ , strong anti-interference ability, and good economy. At the optimal adsorption pH of 5, the adsorption model of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. This indicates that the adsorption of Pb 2+ by SA@ZIF-8/BC is chemisorption and monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption of modified biochar was 300 mg g −1 , which was 2.38 times higher than that of before modified BC (126 mg g −1 ). The shift in binding energy of functional groups before and after adsorption of SA@ZIF-8/BC was studied by XPS, and it was found that hydroxyl and carboxyl groups played an important role in the adsorption of Pb 2+ . It was demonstrated that this novel adsorbent can be effectively used for the treatment of Pb pollution in wastewater.

Mussel-inspired “all-in-one” sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel patch promotes healing of infected wound

Yongliang Ouyang,Xiaoju Su,Xiaoyi Zheng,Liang Zhang,Zheng Chen,Qiling Yan,Qinyuan Qian,Jiulong Zhao,Ping Li,Shige Wang

Hydrogels have been widely used as wound dressings to accelerate wound healing . However, due to the impaired skin barrier at the wound site, external bacteria can easily invade the wound and cause infection. In this study, we designed a dopamine-modified sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone (CPD) hydrogel, which was able to promote wound healing while preventing wound infection. Due to the high content of catechol groups, the CPD hydrogel exhibited good tissue adhesion ability and a significant scavenging ability for DPPH• and PTIO• radicals. Under near-infrared laser irradiation, the temperature of CPD hydrogel increased significantly, which significantly killed the Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . The cell migration test confirmed that CPD hydrogel could promote the cell migration ratio. In the in vivo wound healing test for infected full-thickness skin defect, CPD hydrogel significantly inhibited bacterial proliferation and enhanced wound healing rate. Therefore, the multifunctional hydrogel is expected to be applied to wound healing.

Paper-Supported Sodium Alginate Composite Separator Prepared by Polymer-Assisted Phase Separation for Lithium Ion Batteries

Pingping Chen,Anqi Chen,Ge Li,Zhongzheng Yang,Yu Liu,Qinghui Zeng,Liaoyun Zhang

Ecofriendly and renewable properties are highly desirable for separators of lithium batteries, apart from the notorious safety issues. As a natural polysaccharide material, sodium alginate (SA) has outstanding biodegradability and biocompatibility and has usually been used for the binder of electrodes due to its high ionic conductivity. Herein, SA porous separators were initially prepared by a facile polymer-assisted phase separation in which polyethylene glycol (PEG) and acetonitrile acted as a pore-forming agent and an extraction solvent, respectively. The influence of PEG content on the pore formation was systematically investigated, and the uniform and continuous pore structures were successfully realized at the PEG content of 200–500 wt %. Additionally, the cellulose-based paper support (KP) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) porous coating (PVH) were adopted for the decent mechanical integrity of SA porous membranes. The prepared SA composite separators showed excellent thermal dimensional stability, high porosity, and good electrolyte wettability. Moreover, the polar features of SA endowed the composite separators with high ionic conductivity (4.8 mS cm–1) and lithium ion transference number (0.62). The strong depression capacity of lithium dendrites and a comparable electrochemical performance were also observed for the SA-based separators compared with the pure KP and commercial polyolefin separators.

Xiao-Yan Dai,Li-Min Kong,Xiao-Ling Wang,Qing Zhu,Kai Chen,Tao Zhou

Pectinase was immobilized onto sodium alginate/graphene oxide beads via amide bonds by using N , N ′-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide/ N -hydroxysuccinimide as the activating agent. The immobilized pectinase was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Immobilization conditions were optimized by Box–Behnken design and the response surface method. The activity of the immobilized pectinase prepared under optimal conditions reached 1236.86 ± 40.21 U/g, with an enzyme activity recovery of 83.5%. The optimal pH of free pectinase was 4.5, while that of immobilized pectinase was shifted to 4.0. The optimal temperature of immobilized pectinase was increased to 60 °C, which was 10 °C higher than that of free form. Furthermore, the immobilized pectinase possessed a superior thermal stability and storage stability to those of free pectinase. Reusability studies indicated that the immobilized pectinase retained 73% of initial activity after six times cycles. Due to these good properties, such immobilized pectinase may find application in food industry.

Effect of bilayer coating composed of polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and sodium alginate on salted duck eggs

Yongli Jiang,Chenjun Zhuang,Yu Zhong,Yanyun Zhao,Yun Deng,Haiyan Gao,Hangjun Chen,Honglei Mu

The composite bilayer film based on polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, and chitosan were developed in this study, and the effects of the related coating on internal-quality changes of salted duck eggs (SDEs) during storage were determined. The results showed that the overall properties of the bilayer film were better than those of monolayer films, including storage stability. Coatings could significantly (p < 0.05) reduce quality deterioration of SDEs such as water loss, oil exudation, and gritty. The bilayer coating was more effective in inhibiting the increase of egg yolk pH and total bacterial counts than monolayer coatings. After storage for 60 days, water content of bilayer coated SEDs was 19.7% higher than that of the control SDEs, oil exudation was 38% higher, and gritty texture was 27.9% higher. Moreover, bilayer coating could prolong the shelf life of SDEs to more than 60 days at 25°C and 50% relative humidity according to the results of total bacterial count experiment, while the shelf life of control SDEs was less than 45 days. This study indicated the potential application of bilayer composite coating for preservation of SDEs.

Bin Liu,Cewen Hu,Xinyue Huang,Kaiqi Qin,Lei Wang,Zhilong Wang,Jiachen Liang,Fuqiang Xie,Zengjie Fan

Bone defect is a common complication of bone diseases, which often affects the quality of life and mental health of patients. The use of biomimetic bone scaffolds loaded with bioactive substances has become a focal point in the research on bone defect repair. In this study, composite scaffolds resembling bone tissue were created using nacre powder (NP) and sodium alginate (SA) through 3D printing. These scaffolds exhibit several physiological structural and mechanical characteristics of bone tissue, such as suitable porosity, appropriate pore size, applicable degradation performance of bone regeneration and reaching the mechanical requirements of cancellous bone etc. Then, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), containing a mass of growth factors, was loaded on the NP/SA scaffolds. This aims to fully maximize the synergistic effect with NP , thereby accelerating bone tissue regeneration. Overall, this study marks the first instance of preparing a bionic bone structure scaffold containing NP by 3D printing technology, which combined with PRF to further accelerate bone regeneration. These findings offer a new treatment strategy for bone tissue regeneration in clinical applications.

(+)4-cholesten-3-one/sodium alginate/gelatin hydrogel for full-thickness wound repair and skin regeneration

Yu Yan,Aijia You,Xianxian Chen,Wenyi Huang,Xiaoting Lu,Cuijin Gu,Sen Ye,Jun Zhong,Haiting Huang,Yao Zhao,Yu Li,Chun Li

(+)4-cholesten-3-one has been proved to have potential wound healing effect in the process of wound regeneration. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of (+)4-cholesten-3-one/sodium alginate/gelatin on skin injury and reveal its potential molecular mechanism. First, we prepared sodium alginate/gelatin hydrogel (SA/Gel hydrogel) with different ratios and tested their characteristics. Based on these results, different concentrations of (+)4-cholesten-3-one were added into SA/Gel hydrogel. A full-thickness skin injury model was successfully established to evaluate wound healing activity in vivo. HE staining and Masson staining were used to evaluate the thickness of granulation tissue and collagen deposition level. Immunohistochemical staining and immunofluorescence staining were applied to detect the level of revascularization and proliferation in each group of wounds. Western blot, quantitative-PCR and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect the expression of proteins related to Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in each group of wounds. In vitro results showed that the hydrogel not only created a 3D structure for cell adhesion and growth, but also exhibited good swelling ability, excellent degradability and favorable bio-compatibility. Most importantly, in vivo experiments further indicated that (+)4-cholesten-3-one/SA/Gel hydrogel effectively enhanced wound healing. The effectiveness is due to its superior abilities in accelerating healing process, granulation tissue regeneration, collagen deposition, promoting angiogenesis, tissue proliferation, as well as fibroblast activation and differentiation. The underlying mechanism was related to the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. This study highlighted that (+)4-cholesten-3-one/SA/Gel hydrogel holds promise as a wound healing dressing in future clinical applications.
