Transition-metal carbides, nitrides or carbonitrides (named as MXenes) are a novel type of two-dimensional (2D) materials with the features of traditional 2D materials but more variable chemical compositions. MXenes and related materials have raised more and more research attention and been extensively explored for different applications. In this work, we developed a novel method to synthesize magnetic MXene composites (Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs) for the first time through a one-pot route, which relied on the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles into Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets via thermal treatment. The potential utilization of these Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs for catalytic degradation of organic dyes through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were also evaluated in details. We demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with size about 5 nm could be anchored onto Ti 3 C 2 with well dispersed state. The catalytic degradation results demonstrated that Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs possess extremely high degradation efficiency towards different organic dyes under optimal conditions. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra identified that both hydroperoxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) radicals were involved in the degradation process. This work reported a novel one-step method for fabrication MXenes based multifunctional composites, which show extremely high efficiency for AOPs. This method could also be extended for fabrication of many other multifunctional composites for various applications.

As a metal-free polymeric semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is a promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting but suffers from the insufficient optical absorption and sluggish utilization of photocarriers. Herein, based on the energy band engineering theory, a new design philosophy of tunable p-n homojunction is proposed and realized in a novel P-doped g-C 3 N 4 (PCN) material. Through regulating the tendency of transformation in p-n homojunction, a strong internal electric field is built and integrated with two secondary internal electric fields by further decorating with Ti 3 C 2 , leading to the formation of a triple-internal electric field system. Thus the spatial separation efficiency of photocarriers is improved and their lifetime is prolonged. The specific photocatalyst exhibits excellent overall water splitting performance in pure water with a notable quantum yield. This work presents a peculiar concept of adjustable p-n homojunction and holds great significance for the rational design of advanced photocatalyst in water splitting.

Herein, a new type of two-dimensional (2D)/2D Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 heterojunction was developed for efficient photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), in which TiO 2 nanosheets (TiO 2 Ns) were designed as the main catalyst, while Ti 3 C 2 MXene served as the co-catalyst. Experimental and theoretical results revealed that Ti 3 C 2 MXene introduced electron-rich unsaturated Ti sites, serving as highly active sites for both the adsorption and activation of N 2 on the Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 heterojunction. Furthermore, the 2D/2D Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 heterostructure greatly promoted the directional separation and transfer of charge carriers, facilitated by the internal electric field. This structural feature enabled the spatial separation of the N 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation half-reactions on the distinct surfaces of Ti 3 C 2 (001) and TiO 2 (001), consequently reducing the reaction energy barrier for each respective process. The synergistic effects arising from the interface and surface interactions within the heterojunction conspicuously improved the photocatalytic NRR activity. As a result, the optimized Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 heterojunction exhibited a high NH 3 production rate of 24.4 μmol g -1 h -1 in the absence of sacrificial agents, representing a remarkable 12.8-fold increase compared to individual TiO 2 Ns. This work provides new insights into rational design of high-performance heterogeneous photocatalysts and offers a deeper understanding of the mechanism underlying surface active sites in the photocatalytic NRR process.

Infected diabetic wounds represent a significant challenge in clinical care due to persistent inflammation and impaired healing. To address these issues, the development of novel wound dressings with both antibacterial and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging properties is essential. Herein, we prepare a novel wound dressing composed of Cu2–xO nanoparticles decorated on Ti3C2 MXene (Cu2–xO@Ti3C2) and integrate it into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to form electrospun nanofibers (Cu2–xO@Ti3C2@PVA). Cu2–xO@Ti3C2 exhibits remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency and effective ROS scavenging properties. In vitro experiments demonstrated that Cu2–xO@Ti3C2 effectively kills bacteria upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, which can be attributed to the photothermal therapy (PTT) effect of Ti3C2. At the same time, the ROS scavenging abilities of both Ti3C2 and Cu2–xO endow Cu2–xO@Ti3C2 with significant in vitro anti-inflammatory effects. As a promising wound dressing, in vivo studies validated the high efficacy of Cu2–xO@Ti3C2@PVA in promoting hemostasis, exerting antibacterial activity, reducing inflammation, and accelerating the healing process of diabetic wounds. This innovative approach provides a comprehensive solution to the multifaceted challenges of diabetic wound healing and paves the way for improved clinical outcomes.

Malachite green (MG)-contaminated aquatic products pose a serious threat to animal and human health. Hence, a novel recyclable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on AuNPs/TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 heterostructures was developed for the detection and degradation of MG in aquatic products. Specifically, AuNPs/TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 heterostructures were synthesized by in situ oxidation and electrostatic adsorption based on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets. The excellent photocatalytic and SERS performance of the AuNPs/TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 was demonstrated by Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results, which was attributed to the enhancement of charge transfer (CT) after the formation of heterostructures. The results demonstrate that AuNPs/TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 is highly sensitive and recyclable. The detection limit of the sensor for MG is 8.91 × 10 −5 mg/L. The sensor can be recycled for five times under the condition of light, and shows satisfactory self-cleaning performance in the food matrix, providing a possible alternative solution for the recyclable detection of MG.

Background Photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy of bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) semiconductor has been severely restricted by its electron–hole pairs (e − −h + ) separation inefficiency and oxygen (O 2 ) deficiency in tumors, which greatly hinders reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and further clinical application of Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles (NPs) in biomedicine. Results Herein, novel Bi 2 S 3 /titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ) two-dimensional nano-heterostructures (NHs) are designed to realize multimode PDT of synchronous O 2 self-supply and ROS generation combined with highly efficient photothermal tumor elimination for hypoxic tumor therapy. Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 NHs were synthesized via the in situ synthesis method starting from Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets (NSs), a classical type of MXene nanostructure. Compared to simple Bi 2 S 3 NPs, Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 NHs significantly extend the absorption to the near-infrared (NIR) region and enhance the photocatalytic activity owing to the improved photogenerated carrier separation, where the hole on the valence band (VB) of Bi 2 S 3 can react with water to supply O 2 for the electron on the Ti 3 C 2 NSs to generate ·O 2 − and ·OH through electron transfer. Furthermore, they also achieve 1 O 2 generation through energy transfer due to O 2 self-supply. After the modification of triphenylphosphium bromide (TPP) on Bi 2 S 3 /Ti 3 C 2 NHs, systematic in vitro and in vivo evaluations were conducted, revealing that the synergistic-therapeutic outcome of this nanoplatform enables complete eradication of the U251 tumors without recurrence by NIR laser irradiation, and it can be used for computed tomography (CT) imaging because of the strong X-ray attenuation ability. Conclusion This work expands the phototherapeutic effect of Bi 2 S 3 -based nanoplatforms, providing a new strategy for hypoxic tumor theranostics.

Antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in pharmaceutical wastewater pose serious threats to human health and ecosystems. Traditional disinfection methods have limitations in removing ARB and ARGs, and advanced oxidation processes are hampered by the competition of dissolved organics for reactive species. Herein, we propose a synergistic enhanced adsorption-catalysis strategy by integrating Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets into covalent organic framework (COF) based heterojunction photocatalyst. The excellent electronic conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 promotes electron capture from photoexcited COF, enhancing charge separation and the generation of reactive species. In-situ characterizations confirm Ti-O-P covalent bonding between DNA phosphate skeleton and Ti sites promote ARGs adsorption. This advanced system achieves 99.9 % inactivation of antibiotic-resistant E. coli and 98.9 % simultaneous ARGs degradation, with peak abundance of extracellular ARGs reduced 72.4 % of control without Ti 3 C 2 . In a continious-flow reactor operated for three consecutive 12 h cycles, the prepared photocatalyst realizes consistent inactivation and degradation including ARB, ARGs and antibiotics of pharmaceutical wastewater. This work provides new implications for controlling resistance risk spread during sewage disinfection.

Facing the increasingly serious issues of energy crisis and environmental pollution, it is vital to develop efficient and durable photocatalysis systems for hydrogen (H 2 ) production from water splitting. However, for the famous CdS-based systems, the bottleneck of poor efficiency and low stability arisen from photocorrosion has not been broken through yet. In this study, a ternary composite of CdS , MoS 2 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene with intimately contact interfaces was successfully constructed via an in situ growth method, which exhibited reinforced photocatalytic H 2 -production activity and increased photocorrosion resistant capability. Both of experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations well proved that the photogenerated holes and electrons of CdS timely migrated to Ti 3 C 2 and MoS 2 , respectively. As a consequence, the optimal sample displayed a high H 2 production rate of 14.88 mmol·h −1 ·g −1 with a lifetime of up to 78 h, and the component and structure of the composite were kept intact during the photocatalysis reaction. This work highlights the synergistic effect of the Ti 3 C 2 MXene and MoS 2 as redox dual cocatalysts on the promoted photocatalytic performance and durability of CdS, which can be anticipated to significantly enhance the commercial availability of CdS and even boost its incorporation into industrial applications.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease initiated by bacterial pathogens, resulting from complex interactions between microbial infection and host immune responses. In current clinical practice, antibiotics represent the most frequently utilized adjunctive therapy for periodontitis. However, the overuse of antibiotics not only contributes to the emergence of bacterial resistance but also demonstrates limited efficacy in inflammation resolution. In this study, we synthesized selenium/Ti 3 C 2 (Se/Ti 3 C 2 ) through a one-step redox method using Ti 3 C 2 as a template. The Se/Ti 3 C 2 demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ( E.coli ), Staphylococcus aureus ( S.aureus ), and Porphyromonas gingivalis ( P.gingivalis ) under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, as evidenced by comprehensive evaluations including colony-forming unit (CFU) counting assays, live-dead fluorescence staining, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) observations, growth curves, and membrane potential staining assays. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Se/Ti 3 C 2 were investigated using various methodologies, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-pyridine-hydratedacyl (DPPH) scavenging assay, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) scavenging assay, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity measurement, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) fluorescence staining, flow cytometry, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays. Through GPX1 gene knockdown experiments, we demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory effects of Se/Ti 3 C 2 were closely associated with GPX1 expression. RNA sequencing analysis was subsequently performed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Finally, in vivo experiments using a mouse periodontitis model demonstrated the remarkable therapeutic potential of Se/Ti 3 C 2 in periodontitis treatment. Therefore, Se/Ti 3 C 2 holds great promise as a potential alternative to antibiotics, emerging as a novel therapeutic material for periodontitis treatment.

Developing high-performance fabric composites with comprehensive properties is of paramount importance to broaden their application areas. In this work, a novel technique was studied to enhance interfacial adhesion via the adsorption of the complex amphiphilic biopolymer protein onto the surface of PPS/PTFE fabrics. Additionally, WS 2 @Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrids with heterostructures were synthesized, and the distinctive hierarchical microstructure facilitated the multiple reinforcement of the fabric composites. The results suggest that the decoration of BSA offers reaction sites with the phenolic resin and enhances the interfacial performance. Compared to the pure hybrid fabric composites, the tensile and bonding strength of the reinforced hybrid fabric composites are increased by 35.91% and 68.51%. Moreover, the wear rate of the reinforced hybrid fabric composites is decreased by 59.3%.

The scarcity and economic importance of gold has motivated the researchers to develop novel and efficient adsorbents to the increase of recycling from secondary waste streams. In this work, the three-dimensional (3D) Ti 3 C 2 MXene-POSS/V 2 O 3 @C aerogel (MPVA) with orderly network structure was fabricated by the interfacial assembly of MXene and freezing-induced preassembly. The new MPVA hybrid exhibited ultrafast kinetics (only 10 min to reach equilibrium), selectivity, and excellent trapping capacity for Au (III) , owing to the reductive capture mechanism. The Langmuir model was used to describe the capture of Au (III) delivered by MPVA, achieving the maximum capture capacity of 1425.4 mg g −1 at 298 K. Moreover, MPVA displayed extremely high trapping efficiency (>99.9%) at 273 K, which suggests that this composite is promising for capturing Au (III) in cold temperatures. MPVA also shows good reusability after ten cycles. The results indicate that MPVA has great potential for efficient capturing from complex and cold aqueous solutions.

Iodine intake remains a major public health concern, as both iodine excess and deficiency are related to adverse effects on health. Therefore, developing simple and economical methods to detect I − is still in great demand. Herein, we constructed a visual I − sensing platform based on the uncoated Ag–Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrids using methyl orange (MO) as a colorimetric indicator . Plasmonic nanostructures are frequently employed in colorimetric analysis , but uncoated Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are unstable because their surface energies are usually high. Considering that Ag NPs can be etched by I − via forming Ag–I bond, we introduce Ag–Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrids because uncoated Ag NPs with immaculate surfaces are more conducive to binding with I − and being etched. Dissolved O 2 molecules adsorbed on Ti 3+ of Ti 3 C 2 MXenes enable the in situ generation of H 2 O 2 by iodine-etching of uncoated Ag–Ti 3 C 2 nanohybrids. ∙OH radicals promote the degradation of MO through a self-driven Fenton-like process, exhibiting the color variation from orange to transparent. Under optimal conditions, the absorbance of MO at 465 nm decreases linearly with the concentration of I − in the range of 0.5–300 μM, with a limit of detection as low as 0.31 μM. This work opens the feasibility of iodine-etching of Ag in developing novel probes for facile colorimetric determination of I − .
