A novel near-infrared antibacterial material, Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+ tridoped TiO2 nanopowder, was synthesized and applied to kill Aeromonas hydrophia with a maximal bactericidal rate of 65% in 90 min under 980 nm laser irradiation. However, Fe3+-TiO2 or Er3+-Yb3+-TiO2 nanopowders obtained under the same conditions barely could kill Aeromonas hydrophia. The initial energy applied in the photocatalysis antibacterial process is supplied by the upconversion emission of Er3+ and Yb3+ and the codoping of Fe3+, which has intensified the light absorption intensity and enlarged the absorption range. The analyses of phase structure and the optical properties including XRD, UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and upconversion photoluminescence spectra of Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+ tridoped TiO2 nanopowder have been performed in detail to reveal the complex energy transfer and change mechanism. According to our experimental results, the mechanism has been demonstrated involving the upconversion emission, multistep excitation by means of intermediate energy level, capture and transfer electrons of Fe3+, and so on. The photocatalystic antibacterial function of Er3+-Yb3+-Fe3+-TiO2 under near-infrared instead of ultraviolet light is also reported. Because of the strong penetrability of near-infrared, this kind of material may be used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) to kill bacteria or tumors directly.

Hexagonal Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped LaZrTa 3 O 11 (LZTO) phosphor was prepared by molten salt synthesis with B 2 O 3 flux. Holding temperature, holding time, solute and solvent ratio were regulated. The green upconversion luminescence (UCL) integral intensity of the optimal sample can reach 29.2% of β-NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ under 980 nm laser excitation. This outstanding pure green UCL is due to the low phonon energy, Er 3+ /Yb 3+ monolayer (2D) distribution, asymmetry of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ doped lattice sites, and low oxygen vacancy. The maximum relative temperature sensitivity attains 0.01221 K −1 at 303 K by employing luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technique. LZTO:Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphor can be used in temperature sensing.

In this paper, Cs 2 NaErCl 6 double perovskites microcrystals (MCs) co-doped with Yb 3+ and Bi 3+ are successfully synthesized by a simple “dissolving-drying” method. When excited at 379 nm, 808 nm and 980 nm, the MCs show strong red, green and yellow light, respectively, which can be well distinguished by the naked eyes. On this basis, two kinds of systems are designed with doped/undoped MCs for triple-mode fluorescent anti-counterfeiting and information encryption of numbers and characters. The results indicate that our MCs are not only beneficial to the application of fluorescent anti-counterfeiting, but also greatly improve the security of anti-counterfeiting. In addition, we evaluate the temperature sensing performance of these MCs by fluorescence intensity ratio technique. The samples show a high relative sensitivity as 3.8 %/K at 243 K. The results show that the samples have multi-functional applications in the fields of fluorescent anti-counterfeiting and temperature sensing, and this work will broaden the application fields of lead-free double perovskites in fluorescent anti-counterfeiting and temperature sensing.

The exploration of acquiring excellent thermal performance of luminescence thermometers has become a key focus, owing to their non-contact measurement, high spatial resolution and rapid response. However, many luminescence thermometers still suffer from unsatisfactory relative sensitivity and a single temperature sensing mode. Herein, we report a Lu2CaMg2Ge3O12 garnet structure oxide with a stronger crystal field for ultra-sensitive and multimodal luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) optical thermometry based on the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) of Nd3+ (4F7/2 and 4F3/2) and Er3+ (2H11/2 and 4S3/2), where the relative sensitivity (Sr) can be up to 2.62% K−1 and 1.15% K−1, respectively. Furthermore, the energy level splitting factor Ke, which is used to quantify the energy level splitting extent of the doped ions, is estimated with the help of the dielectric chemical bond theory of complex crystals. As a result of the strong crystal field, the near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive temperature sensing performance of Er3+ (4I13/2) is enabled by the Stark sublevels with the relative sensitivity value of 0.46% K−1. This work not only provides a fresh perspective for developing optical thermometers with outstanding temperature performance, but also provides inspiration for pursuing a multimodal luminescence thermometer.

Alkaline zirconium fluorides (A x Zr y F x+y , A = Li, Na, and K), featuring unique crystallographic structures, have recently emerged as a class of attractive hosts for fabricating lanthanide (Ln 3+ )-doped upconversion nanocrystals (UCNCs) that exhibited distinct morphology, upconversion luminescence (UCL) performance, and physicochemical property. In this paper, for the first time the controlled preparation of Yb 3+ /Er 3+ -doped UCNCs is reported based on the trigonal Cs 2 ZrF 6 host, leading to tunable morphology and size of the resulting UCNCs by varying the reaction temperature and time. By further incorporating Na + ions into the Cs 2 ZrF 6 crystal lattice, sub-10 nm Yb 3+ /Er 3+ /Na + tridoped UCNCs with highly improved crystallinity and thus greatly enhanced UCL intensity are obtained. Moreover, these resulting UCNCs display abnormal thermal enhancement of UCL over a temperature range from 333 to 493 K, enabling the fabrication of supersensitive luminescent nanothermometers for temperature sensing. Based on the luminescence intensity ratio of two nonthermally coupled levels (i.e., 4 F 9/2 and 2 H 11/2 ) of Er 3+ , the as-prepared Cs 2 ZrF 6 :Yb/Er/Na UCNCs exhibit an extremely large absolute sensitivity of 177.3% K −1 and a considerably high relative sensitivity of 1.52% K −1 at 333 K. These results unambiguously demonstrate that Cs 2 ZrF 6 is a suitable host material for preparing small-sized Ln 3+ -doped UCNCs as nanothermometer for high-performance ratiometric temperature sensing.

Yb3+/Er3+-doped Bi2(MoO4)3−z(WO4)z phosphors were synthesized via a hydrothermal method combined with subsequent calcination. Under the excitation of a light source of 980 nm, Bi2(MoO4)3:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors exhibited strong upconversion green light and weak red light emissions. By doping WO42− in Bi2(MoO4)3:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors, the upconversion luminescence intensity of the phosphors significantly enhanced, which is 42 times higher than that of the undoped WO42− phosphor. With an increase in WO42− doping content, the final color coordinates of Bi2(MoO4)3−z(WO4)z:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors were (0.2352, 0.7274), which is closer to the standard green CIE coordinates. The maximum CP of WO42−-doped phosphors is as high as 116.68%, which is 74.44% higher than that of the undoped WO42− phosphor. Based on the thermally coupled energy levels (TCLs) of Er3+ (2H11/2/4S3/2 → 4I15/2) in Bi2(MoO4)2.7(WO4)0.3:14%Yb3+,3%Er3+ phosphor, the SR value reached a maximum of 0.0081 K−1 at 323 K and the SA value reached a maximum of 0.0099 K−1 at 398 K. The obtained Bi2(MoO4)3−z(WO4)z:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphors are suitable for upconversion luminescent materials for green displays and have potential advantages in optical temperature measurement.

Visible-to-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) luminescent materials are in great demand in the field of non-destructive testing such as component determination and hyperspectral imaging. Although Cr 3+ -activated phosphors are widely reported, controllable tailoring ultra-wide VIS-NIR luminescence excited by blue light is still a challenge. The strategies of cationic substitution and energy transfers are effective for adjusting the luminescence of Cr 3+ -activated phosphors. In this work, a series of Cr 3+ -doped Sc-based solid solution phosphors (Ba 3-m Sr m Sc 4 O 9 :Cr 3+ ) are reported. Under the excitation of blue light, these phosphors exhibit broadband emission due to the different luminescence centers induced by Cr 3+ occupying different cationic sites. Because of the weaker crystal field strength, Cr 3+ realizes a broadband emission with a longer peak position (λ em = 820 nm) and broader full width at half maximum (FWHM≈182 nm) in Ba 2 SrSc 4 O 9 . Furthermore, Ce 3+ /Yb 3+ ions are introduced into Ba 2 SrSc 4 O 9 :Cr 3+ , achieving an ultra-wide VIS-NIR luminescence (460–1200 nm) by the Ce 3+ →Cr 3+ →Yb 3+ multiple energy transfers. Designing energy transfers is beneficial to improve the quantum efficiency and weaken the thermal quenching. Finally, the NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) fabricated by Ba 2 SrSc 4 O 9 :Cr 3+ demonstrates great potential in night-vision and water component detection. This work provides an effective design idea for controllable tailoring ultra-wide VIS-NIR luminescence by chemical substitution and energy transfer.

A series of chiral nanostructured bismuth bromide doped with Er 3+ , Yb 3+ (D-BYE) phosphors were synthesized using a solvothermal method followed by an air annealing strategy. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra were also recorded under 980 nm laser excitation in the temperature range from 295 to 565 K. The UCL intensity of D-BYE is about 34 times higher compared to the achiral nanostructured bismuth bromide doped with Er 3+ , Yb 3+ (A-BYE) phosphor. Optical temperature sensing of phosphors was achieved by evaluating the temperature sensing behavior using thermally coupled (TCLs) or non-thermally coupled (NTCLs) levels of Er 3+ . Impressively, the maximum relative sensitivity (S R ) value of the D-BYE phosphor was 1.32% K -1 using the NTCLs method, which is about 1.6 times higher than the sensitivity of the TCLs-based method (0.86% K -1 ). The results of this work demonstrate the great potential of D-BYE phosphors for optical temperature sensing.

A series of Nd3+/Yb3+ co-doped Ca2LaTaO6 (CLTO) phosphors are synthesized by a high temperature solid phase method. Structural characterization confirms the successful incorporation of Nd3+ and Yb3+ ions into the CLTO host lattice. The photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of CLTO:Nd3+ and CLTO:Nd3+/Yb3+ are investigated in detail. Under the excitation of ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) light, the CLTO:Nd3+/Yb3+ phosphor emits broadband near infrared (NIR) luminescence. In particular, the luminescence intensity of the Yb3+ ion is increased through an energy transfer (ET) process from Nd3+ to Yb3+. The luminescence mechanism of the CLTO:Nd3+/Yb3+ sample is analyzed based on the decay lifetime and PL spectra. In addition, the NIR emission intensity of Yb3+ ions is also enhanced by doping K+ ions. The broadband luminescence (850–1050 nm) of the CLTO:Nd3+/Yb3+/K+ phosphor has good application in solar cells and anti-counterfeiting.

A novel upconversion phosphor, Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 co-doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ , was successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 980 nm near-infrared excitation, this material exhibits remarkable upconversion luminescence, with intense green emissions at 527 nm and 550 nm, and a weaker red emission at 657 nm. The optimal doping concentrations were determined to be 0.03 for Yb 3+ and 0.005 for Er 3+ , enabling maximum luminescent efficiency. Spectroscopic investigations including upconversion photoluminescence, excitation, and emission spectra confirmed that the upconversion follows a distinct energy transfer mechanism: Yb 3+ ( 2 F 5/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 I 11/2 ) → Yb 3+ ( 2 F 7/2 ) + Er 3+ ( 4 F 7/2 ). In addition to its excellent luminescent properties, the Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 : 0.03Yb 3+ /0.005Er 3+ phosphor exhibits reliable optical thermal sensitivity over a wide temperature range (298–673 K), with a peak relative sensitivity of 1.11 % K −1 at 298 K. These outstanding optical characteristics make Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 : 0.03Yb 3+ /0.005Er 3+ a promising candidate for display and lighting technologies.

Short-wave infrared (SWIR) light sources, as crucial components of SWIR imaging and spectroscopy technologies, have garnered significant attention recently. The rapid development of portable electronic devices has created a demand for compact and efficient SWIR emitters, and phosphor-converted SWIR LEDs represent the optimal technological solution to meet this requirement. Here, a Cr(PO3)3:Yb3+ phosphor with highly efficient and pure SWIR luminescence under 450 nm blue LED excitation is reported. Upon doping with Yb3+ in the Cr(PO3)3 matrix, the resulting material is capable of effectively converting blue excitation photons to SWIR luminescence spanning from 900 to 1200 nm, with a dominant emission peak at 1003 nm due to the efficient energy transfer from Cr3+ to Yb3+. Notably, this phosphor demonstrates an ultrahigh internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 95.7% and a record external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 60.3% upon 450 nm blue light excitation. Moreover, the fabricated SWIR LED prototype device by combining the Cr(PO3)3:Yb3+ phosphor and a commercial 450 nm blue LED chip exhibits SWIR output power of 24.1 mW at 200 mA input current and a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 12.8% at 20 mA. This study not only opens avenues for realizing high-efficiency SWIR luminescence by deliberately controlling energy transfer pathways in Cr-based material systems but also paves the way for the development of high-power SWIR light sources.

To utilize near-infrared (NIR) light within the solar energy spectrum, we have engineered an advanced composite of NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+@g-C3N4@WO3@MXene (denoted as NYT@g-C3N4@WO3@MXene) capable of absorbing NIR light to facilitate photocatalytic reactions. This environmentally benign system integrates semiconductor heterostructures (g-C3N4 and WO3) with upconversion nanoparticles (NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+, abbreviated as NYT) and Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. Experimental validation demonstrated exceptional performance in antibiotic remediation, with the composite achieving 86.3% tetracycline decomposition over 12 hours under NIR irradiation through synergistic mechanisms, while also exhibiting good cycling stability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity arises from collaborative effects between upconversion luminescence, optimized charge transfer pathways within the heterojunction architecture, and the visible light absorption characteristics of MXene.
